Civilian Sensei: Chapter 05

"All right everyone, listen up!" Iruka Umino said as he observed his students. This was the last week of their academy life before they became Shinobis and he could see more than one nervous face. "Tomorrow will be the graduation exam, so I expect that every one of you practice and study so you are all ready. Remember, the exam is a theoretical-practical test and you will need to approve both instances to graduate," he told them with a serious face.

"Hah!" Exclaimed one of them. Iruka turned his gaze in the direction of the voice and almost rolled his eyes when he saw who was talking. "Don't worry sensei, it will be a piece of cake!" Said say student.

He was a fairly tall, lean-built young man with fair skin, red hair, and violet and blue eyes. He was wearing a black jacket over a white shirt with a red spiral draw on it. He also wore black pants with a shuriken holster on his right knee and black sandals.

His name was Naruto Uzumaki, the Jinchūriki of the Kyuubi.

Trying to calm the boy, Iruka said.

"I wouldn't underestimate the test, Naruto. Remember, you had already failed the exam twice," he said, making Naruto glumed and the rest of the students laugh.

"You don't need to be so mean, sensei," Naruto said with a sulky voice, making Iruka internally laugh.

True be told, he didn't think that Naruto would fail this time.

Since the day he entered the classroom with his hair and eye change, he had seen a gradual change in the boy's attitude. It wasn't an overnight transformation, but little by little, he started behaving more maturely.

He stopped running late to class, did his homework in time and form, didn't interrupt the class, and didn't play pranks on people anymore... Well, mostly.

His abilities also grew during this year. He wasn't at the top of the class, that position still belonged to Sasuke Uchiha, but he was firmly in the center of the ranking. From dead-last for six years to that rank in only a year was impressive.

Still, it was no good to be too arrogant about it.

"Yeah Naruto, if someone will pass this test with flying colors is me," said Kiba Inuzuka, another student and heir to the Inuzuka Clan.

"Yeah?" Asked Naruto, and Iruka could already feel a headache coming on. "Are you sure about that? Because your grades don't reflect that," he said, smirking at the feral boy.

"What did you say, dead-last? You wanna go?" Said Kiba, standing on the table.

"You hear me mutt," said Naruto, doing the same, "And I am not the dead-last anymore, remember? That title belongs to you," he said, mocking the other boy.

Kiba was about to jump the redhead, but Iruka decided to intervene.

"Enough!" Said Iruka, looking from one boy to the other. "You two, sit down!" He ordered them. As the two sat, he reprehended them. "Naruto, Kiba, you two, along with everyone else in this room, may become ninjas tomorrow, adults in the eyes of society, so start acting like it," he said to the two of them, but only looking at Naruto, causing him to lower his eyes.

He internally smiled at Naruto's reaction. For all the maturity Naruto has shown, he is still a teenager.

Wanting to cheer him a little, he said out loud.

"Remember everyone, I firmly believe that each and every one of you are capable of passing this exam," he could see how his words lifted Naruto's spirit. "So I hope you all study today, so tomorrow, you can walk out of this room like ninjas," he said, making Naruto smile.

He was really proud of all his students, but even more of Naruto. He had come really far this year.

Iruka was grateful for whatever event that made Naruto surpass himself.

And he was sure that Naruto felt the same.

Naruto was excited.

It has been one year since the day he met Braith-Neesan.

It had been a tough and difficult year. There were many times when he thought that he would not make it.

But tomorrow will be the final day. He will finally be able to do it.

He will finally...

He will finally be able to escape that devil in angel's clothing!

As he left the academy toward the Legacy shop, he remembered those dreadful days. Don't misunderstand, he was really grateful for all she had done for him. But the things that she has subjugated him to...

It was madness. Pure and undilute madness.

she couldn't train him adequately until his physical condition allowed her to do it.

The first thing she told him was that she couldn't train him adequately until his physical condition allowed her to do it. So for the first few months, the only type of physical activity he did, was body conditioning. And it sucked. Big time.

Lunges, push-ups, squat jumps, burpees, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, deadlifts, bench presses, and squats. And all those wearing gravity seals. Everyday. All the time that he wasn't in the academy. And even when he was in class, he had those damn seals on.

Thanks to the rapid regeneration of his lineage, his body recovered from any excess from one day to the other.

She had made him run across her garden with those seals for hours and as time passed, the time and amount of weight of the seals increased. It had come to the point where he could run for days nonstop with little effort.

Once his body reached the point she wished to, she finally started training him in taijutsu, chakra control and ninjutsu. And that had also been hell.

Just remembering the things that she did to him while practicing taijutsu and ninjutsu makes him shiver.

Funny enough, practicing chakra control, something at which he was really bad before he started training with Braith, was now almost... relaxing.

But the worst part of all this, the principal reason for waiting to move out, was her ban on ramen! What kind of monster did something like that?! How could she forbid him from eating ramen for more than once a month? What kind of demon was she!?

And when he ate it, he could only eat two bowls. Two bowls were for pansies! He should be allowed to eat at least five of them!

But no more. Tomorrow, after he passed the exam, he would go to Ichiraku and absolutely stuff hims-

Hate, disdain, fear.

The blond boy raised his hand to his face when those feelings invaded his mind. As he scanned his surroundings, he noticed the villagers glaring at him with malice in their eyes.

That was another annoying thing that Braith brought with her. When she used that old Uzumaki ritual on him, she did not just change his appearance but also awakened this ability.

He now knew what most people close to him were feeling. This would not be much of a problem for most people but for him, who was hated by most of the village, was very vexing.

Braith said that it would be very useful once he started doing missions but for now, it was just annoying.

He took a deep breath and focused on the road ahead, ignoring the people around him as he continued his way.

Ten minutes later, he arrived at the shop that had been his home for the last year.

As he walked into the store, he noticed that it was empty like it usually was on most days. He wasn't kidding, her shop must had maybe ten clients a week... and that was he being generous.

He knew that most of her income came from 'village service' or something like that, but Braith had never bothered herself in explaining what that was.

"Hi Naru," said a voice from the back of the store. "How was your day in the academy?" As she emerged from the back room, the speaker revealed herself. It was Braith, his teacher for the past year, and his personal tormentor. She was carrying a tray with tea.

She was wearing black shorts, a white tank top shirt, and an open bluish coat that reached her long black socks. In three words, she looked amazing, as always.

"Hi Braith-Neesan," he responded. "I went well, Iruka-sensei told us that tomorrow is the graduation exam," he told her.

Braith sat behind the counter and gave him a cup of tea.

"I see," she said as he thanked her for the tea. "Tell me, how do you feel about it? Are you nervous?" She asked him with a gentle look.

He took a sip of tea as he thought about her question. He had indeed failed this exam before, so he should be nervous, maybe even scared.

But after a year of training with Braith, he felt...

"Actually no," he responded to her. "I just wish that tomorrow arrive soon, so I could get this over with and be finally a shinobi," the redhead boy said.

Braith looks at him for a moment in silence before smiling at him.

"That is good, Naru," she said. "Are you prepared for tomorrow? Have you studied for the theoretical part of the exam?" She asked.

"Yes, I have Braith-Neesan," he responded.

He was no more fan of reading books and scrolls than he was before meeting her, but he had finally accepted that if he wanted to graduate and be a successful shinobi, he had to know more than just jutsus.

Besides, there were a few books that weren't too bad.

"Good," said Braith, interrupting his thoughts. "And for the practical part?" She asked with a concerned look.

Naruto could understand where the concern was coming from. The last time he took this exam, he failed because he couldn't do the Clone jutsu. But that was in the past.

Well, no really. He still couldn't do the simple clon jutsu but, Braith-Neesan had taught him the Shadow Clone Technique, which permitted him to form real clones, not just illusions like the jutsu taught in the academy.

Thanks to that, this time the exam will be in the bag.

"No problem in that front either Braith-Neesan! Thanks to you, now I know all the jutsus needed to pass the exam!" He answered happily.

She took another sip of tea before saying.

"Perfect," she responded. Then she gave him a serious look. "And remember, do not..."

"...show everything that I can do, yeah I know," he said, finishing the phrase for her.

She had told him time and time again not to reveal all of his skills. That he should stay in the middle of the rank of the academy. And no matter how much he wanted to show off, he chose to listen to her advice.

"Don't take this as a joke Naru," she said, sternly. "It could one day save your life."

He understood where she was coming from. It was true, in the life of a shinobi, friends today could become enemies tomorrow, but still, there was precaution and then there was paranoia.

Naruto firmly believed that his teacher was a bit paranoid.

Well, it won't harm to follow her advice. So far, she hadn't misled him.

"Don't worry, Braith-Neesan. I won't," he promised.

She looked at him sternly for a few moments before nodding.

"Good, I am sure that you will do great tomorrow," she said as she stood up. "Oh and Naru?" She asked him with a sweet voice that sent red flags at him.

After spending a lot of time with her, he had learned that when she used that tone of voice, he better pay attention or he would face the consequences.

"Y-yes, Braith-Neesan?" He asked nervously.

"If I found out that you did something stupid during your exam, like for example, using your Sexy Jutsu instead of the common Transformation Jutsu, you won't like the consequences," she warned him.

"Of- of course not, Braith-Neesan, I would never do something like that," he said laughing out loud, while in his mind, he was cursing.

'Dawn, how did she know?!' he asked himself.

He has stopped doing pranks this year and concentrated on his studies, but he wanted to say goodbye to the academy with a bang. So he said to himself 'Hey, I am graduating and after tomorrow I will be an adult, so if this is my last chance to do a prank, I should take it.'

It was perfect, Iruka-sensei would ask him to perform the jutsu, and then bang! A naked girl in front of him, probably causing him to have a nosebleed in front of the whole class!

It would have been beautiful.

But no, Braith-Neesan has to be a party pooper.

"Good," she said, interrupting him. "Now today, the only training, besides reading your books, will be chakra control. I don't want you to exhaust yourself today and show up for the test in bad shape," she said as she walked toward her backyard with him following her closely.

Once they were outside, they walked toward a clearing where he could do his exercise in peace.

As they walked there, Naruto looked at their surroundings, marveling at the floral life that surrounds them. No matter how many times he looked at it, he couldn't get used to the sight.

They were trees the size of buildings, and flowers of colors that he never even knew existed. It was extraordinary.

After a couple more minutes of walking, they arrived at the clearing where he usually practiced chakra control.

It was a meadow that was next to a little lake and surrounded by trees. It was a beautiful place.

Once they were inside, Braith turned to him.

"Okay Naru, you know what to do," he said.

Without saying anything, Naruto sat on the grass, crossed his legs and closed his eyes.

This was the method Braith taught him to improve his chakra control.

She said that part of the problem with people with great chakra capacity was sensing the chakra in their body, as it filled their chakra conducts to the bring.

To correct that, she taught him different meditation techniques that helped him with this problem. As his control improved, he was taught other techniques until he learned the current one.

It was called the Art Of Dark Heaven And Earth.

A dumb name in his opinion. But despite that, it works. The better he could feel the chakra circulating his body, the better he could use it.

He still couldn't do the leaf concentration exercise but he could do tree and water walking. Still, according to Braith, the more he practiced, the more his chakra pool would increase, so he would have to do this kind of exercise for a very long time.

Not that it bothers him. It is kind of soothing.

But before he starts the exercise, Braith said.

"And don't forget Naru, if you feel anything other than your chakra, you have to stop the exercise immediately and wait a couple of minutes to start again," she warned him.

That was another thing that happened sometimes. Approximately three months after he started doing this type of exercise, he felt... something.

He didn't know how to describe it exactly. He was sensing his chakra as usual when he started feeling another chakra entering his body. He knew that it was chakra because it reminded him of when Braith-Neesan trapped him in a Genjutsu. But it was different, it was more... calm, more peaceful.

And alluring. If Braith hadn't called him at that precise moment he would have kept absorbing it, and who knows what could happen to him.

Braith hadn't explained what was it. The only thing that said was that she would tell him what it was once he became a Jonin. Until that time, the only thing that he had to know was that it was dangerous and that if he felt it again he had to stop the exercise immediately.

He has sensed it three other times but he has done what Braith told him to do and stopped instantly.

With those thoughts in mind, he opened his eyes and told her.

"Don't worry Braith-Neesan, I will," he responded looking at her in the eyes.

She looked him in the eyes for a few seconds before giving him a tender smile.

"Good boy," she said as she affectionately rubbed his head, making him blush. "Do you need me to stay with you or do you think that you can manage alone?" She asked him.

Naruto just shook his head.

"Don't worry Braith-Neesan. I got this, you can go attend your shop," he said smiling.

"Very well," she said. "Don't stay here too long. You have to study too," she said.

After he nodded his head, she departed from the clearing.

He closed his eyes and started to concentrate.

Heat. That was the first thing he felt when he started circulating his chakra through his chakra pathway. And then, through his whole body.

According to Braith, normally chakra only circulates through these pathways, and along those pathways, there are 361 nodes called tenketsu that control the flow of chakra and from which chakra can be utilized.

But thanks to the mediation techniques that Braith taught him, now he could circulate chakra through his whole body via the blood circulatory system, not just through his chakra pathway, making him more sensible to the feel of chakra.

He could sense how the heat spread through his entire being. It was amazing.

He spent the rest of the afternoon doing that. Losing himself in the heat that his whole body felt as the chakra circulates through it.

The next day, Naruto entered the academy excited. With a little luck, this would be the last time that he entered it as a student and exited it as a shinobi.

Once he entered the classroom, he looked for an empty seat until he found one. As he sat on it he observed the other person beside him. She had long blue hair and white skin. She was wearing a lavender and cream hooded jacket with lavender cuffs over mesh armor. She also wears navy blue pants and black and low-heeled sandals. Her name was Hinata Hyūga, heiress of the Hyūga clan and one of the few people who was kind to him.

"Hey, Hinata! How are you?" He asked her.

Hinata looked at him and blushed.

"H-hey Naruto-kun. I-I f-fine, thanks, and you?" She asked nervous.

Naruto smiled at her reaction and started talking to her while they waited for their sensei to show.

After he started sensing the feelings of the humans around him, it became difficult for him to stay close to other people, knowing exactly how the other person felt about him. It was like staying close to someone who smelled and yelled all the time. After a while, it became unbearable.

Lucky for him some students didn't appear to have a problem with him. A few of them even thought positively of him.

Hinata was one of them. He still remembered the first time he talked to her. He was curious about her and went to say hi. The moment he greeted her, she fainted. It was kind of funny. As time passed, her tension around them diminished and they became friends.

He still could feel a little bit of her nervousness around him, yes, but he could also feel her kindness and sympathy for him.

And something more deep that he couldn't identify it. He had asked Braith-Neesan about it, but he had just laughed and called him a child.

No matter, one day he would figure it out.

As they continued chatting, the classroom kept filling up with students until all of them were inside it.

"ME FIRST!" Said a loud voice.

"NO! I WAS HERE FIRST!" Responded another, loud, voice.

Naruto sighed when he saw who was talking.

She has long pink hair fair skin and green eyes. She was wearing a red top, black shorts underneath a short grey apron skirt, and low-heeled, knee-high boots. Her name was Saura Haruno.

The other person has long blonde hair, fair skin and green eyes. She was wearing a purple top that left expos her midriff, a purple skirt and black boots. Her name was Ino Yamanaka and she, along with Sakura, was doing the same thing that they did every day before class started.

Fighting for a chance to sit next to Sasuke Uchiha. Also known as Mr. Sunshine.

As he watched them fight, he couldn't help but think that it was pathetic.

I mean, common! The guy might be good looking but it was clear that he was not interested in either of them. He didn't even need to sense his emotions to know that.

In fact, the only thing that he could feel from that guy was anger, hate and pain.

He was used to feeling that kind of emotion from the people around him, but curiously, in his case, it was not aimed at the redhead.

"HA, WINNER! Take that, Ino-pig!" It looked that while he was thinking, the matter of who sat beside Mr. Sunshine was resolved.

He looked at the winner and he remembered how he used to feel about Sakura.

He used to fancy her but that was until he could sense her emotion when he was around her. Turned out, that every time she told him to get lost, she really meant it. She thought that he was just a nuisance, a bug that should just get out of her way.

It really hurt to know that, but after a couple of -very depressing- weeks, he moved on from his infatuation.

Besides, once he got better at identifying emotions, and with the help of Braith, he discovered that all he felt for her was just a crush, not the deep, romantic love that he thought it was.

Funnily, the first clue to it was the emotions that some of his female classmates started having for him after his physical changes. He even heard someone call him exotic, whatever that meant.

And he found out, that all that those girls feel for him was superficial, shallow. Something similar to what he felt for Sakura.

And also similar to what Ino and Sakura feel for Sasuke.

Of course, he didn't intend to tell them that, he was not suicidal.

While he was having those thoughts, he noted that Ino sat beside him.

"Not much luck today Ino?" He asked her with a sly smile.

She looked at him with irritation before saying.

"Shut up, Naruto. Just because we are color buddies, doesn't mean that you have to make fun of me," she responded.

That was another thing that his new aspect brought. Apparently, Ino was a big fan of the purple color, like, she was obsessed with it, one just had to look at her clothes to realize that. She was as obsessed as he used to be with the color orange.

And after his eye changed color, she became more friendly with him. As he said before, she was very superficial.

"Oh, don't worry Ino," he said. "I am sure that you can still stalk the poor bastard on his way home," he said with a daring smile.

"I am not staking him!" She responded. "I am merely taking an interest in him, making sure he gets home safe," she said, trying to save face.

"Uh-uh, yeah sure," he responded sarcastically, while looking at the front of the class.

It was a well-known fact that she, along with many more fangirls, followed Mr. Sunshine back to his house from the academy.

If that was not stalking, he didn't know what it was.

He was having these thoughts went he suddenly felt a couple of arms surround his head.

Alarmed, he couldn't help but look at the person responsible, before blushing.

"Ah, are you jealous Naru?" Ino said, looking at him with inviting eyes. "Don't worry, you know that I won't just trade you for a pretty boy," she said making him feel his face blush even more.

"Ah, well, you," he started saying, not knowing how to respond before Ino started laughing.

"Hahahah! You are too easy Naru," she said, letting him go.

Naruto simply crossed his arms and looked the other way, still blushing.

"It is not funny."

"It is a little funny," Ino said.

Naruto opened his mouth to respond when their two teachers entered the classroom.

Iruka was the first to enter, followed by Mizuki.

"All right class, be silent!" He said to them. "I will be handing you the written part of the test, you will have two hours to complete it, after which we will be calling you one by one to test you in the three basic jutsus," he said as he started walking through the class, handing them the test.

As Naruto received it, he couldn't stop but think about the prank that he wanted to do during the practical part. It would have been perfect! Iruka-sensei would have been all unsuspecting and then bang! A naked girl.

But noooo! Braith-Neesan had to ruin everything.

But speaking of Braith-Neesan.

A wicked smile appeared on his face.

Yes, that might work.

Iruka was calling the student who approved the writing exam to demonstrate the Ninjutsu part of the test.

So far was going well. Generally, the kids that manage to get this far, also approve this part of the exam. It was after this, when their potential Jonin-sensei tested them, that the majority failed.

"Naruto Uzumaki!" He said, calling said student.

The redhead boy stood up in front of him with a confident look in her eyes.

"Now, please, demonstrate the three jutsus, starting with the Substitution Jutsu," he said.

"Of course sensei!" He said, enthusiastic.

He used the corresponding hand seals and he substitution himself with a nearby chair.

"Very good, Naruto," he said, nodding. "Now make at least three clones, please," he said.

This time Naruto did something that he wasn't expecting. He crossed his fingers and three solid clones appeared.

These were not simple clones, these were Shadow Clones! It was a B-rank jutsu that required an extraordinary amount of chakra! Where did he learn it?

"Uh, sensei?" Naruto said, making him realize that he was just looking at the boy in silence with his mouth open.

Clearing his throat to hide his embarrassment, he responded.

"Yes, very good Naruto," he said, looking at his notes to not see his amused eyes. "And now, the Transformation Jutsu, please," he said.

Naruto just grinned at him, making Iruka feel uneasy for a moment, before transforming.

Iruka expected to see the student transform into him as most of the students before had done, but what happened left him agape and blushing.

Once the smoke of the Jutsu dispersed, an ethereal beauty appeared.

Fair skin and silver eyes with a cascade of black hair adorn the most beautiful face that existed. She was wearing a white tank top, a turquoise jacket, black boots and brown shorts that left most of her long legs exposed.

He, of course, knew who she was, but he had never seen her so up close. And those unique eyes of hers had never posed on him.

Her expression while looking at him could only be classified as alluring.

"What do you think sensei," she said putting a finger on her lips. "Do I pass?" She asked.

He was still trying to remember how to speak when Naruto dispelled the jutsu and once again the redhead boy appeared, but this time he was giving him a mischievous smile.

Iruka's expression began to morph from astonishment to infuriated. He really wanted to scold Naruto but he hadn't technically done anything wrong. He had successfully transformed into another person, and even if he didn't wait for his signal to end the jutsu, the technique was perfect.

Even if, according to the smirk on the boy's face, the objective was to make him look like a complete idiot.

Letting a sigh, Iruka just looked at Naruto and said.

"Very well done, Naruto," he said, giving him a smile. "I am proud to say that you have passed the test and now are a shinobi. Congratulations," he said as he looked at the boy cheering for his success.

"Yes, I did it!" Naruto said.

He couldn't wait to tell Braith-Neesan. And more importantly, he couldn't wait to go and stuff himself with ramen!

He was so happy that he didn't notice the displeased look that one of his teachers was giving him.

Naruto was excitingly exiting the academy, wanting to talk to Braith when a person appeared in front of him.

"There you are Naruto," a gray-haired man said.

Naruto was surprised to see Mizuki-sensei. But the surprise quickly became wariness.

"Hey, Mizuki-sensei," he said, trying to mask his tension. Before he met Braith-Neesan, he had always thought that Mizuki was one of the best teachers in the academy.

But after he gained the ability to sense other people's emotions, he realized that the gray-haired man hated him just like everyone else. Maybe even more than them.

"I was looking for you," he said, giving Naruto a false smile. "I have something to tell you," he said, making Naruto even more wary.

"Braith-Neesan!" Naruto shouted as he entered the shop to give Braith the good news, and to get his wallets to pay for the ramen.

He couldn't wipe the smile from his face.

He was so happy, that he had finally taken the first step to accomplish his dream, that he had almost forgotten his chat with Mizuki. And even so, that was left in the background of his mind. What was important was the result of the exam and the forehead protector in his head.

This was definitely the best day of his life!

"Hello Naruto," said a voice behind him, making him squeak.

He turned around and saw his teacher since last year, smiling at him.

"Hey, Braith-Neesan. Look, look," he said, pointing out at the new headband adorning his forehead.

He was so excited that he hadn't noticed the dreading aura surrounding Braith.

"Congratulations, Naruto," she said, still smiling. "Did you have any difficulty during the test?" She asked.

"No, no," he responded, still not noticing anything strange. "It was a piece of cake," he said happily.

"Good, that is good," she said nodding. "Then if you didn't find any difficulties," she said with a serious tone of voice that Naruto finally noticed. "Perhaps then you could explain to me, why you decided to play a prank during the exam when I specifically told you not to? And using my body, no less," she asked.

Naruto started to back up. How did she find out?!

Perhaps it hadn't been the wisest move to prank Iruka-Sensei.

"B-but Braith-Neesan" he tried to defend himself. "I didn't do anything wrong, I just transformed into you as you were dressed yesterday," he kept walking backwards until his back hit the counter.

Giving him a menacing look, she said.

"Naruto," she said, terrifying him. "If you do something with the intention of pranking a person, and the other person feels like he had been pranked, then you have played a prank," she stood in front of him and gave him the same kind of smile that she gave him when he was about to be in a lot of pain. "I hope you didn't have any plans for today, because you are in a lot of trouble, young man," she said.

Naruto tried to run away but she quickly grabbed him by the back of his jacket and started to pull him to her garden.

'But what about my ramen?' he thought, silently crying while he was dragged to the back.
