A line down the street trailed toward Naka shrine, where Reina sat on a throne with baby Kagami Uchiha. Madara stood beside her as Uchiha and Senju clan members entered one by one to hand a gift to the couple and grant Kagami their blessings. Reina sat like a regal statue, cradling her sleepy, smiley baby. By the time late afternoon came, the ceremony had concluded, but that didn't stop the village from rejoicing. Everyone, within and outside of the couple's respective clans held a lively festival that lasted the night.
Reina couldn't be bothered to attend, nor could she expose her three-month-old to the harsh elements of a populated, loud festival. Early in the evening, Madara and Reina headed home.
Reina slowly walked upstairs with Kagami in her arms. She cooed at him as she opened the nursery door. "Alright, chunky monkey, time for you to get changed and go to sleeeeeep."
Madara leaned on the doorway with arms crossed. "Are you doing alright?"
Reina slowly nodded with a sigh. "Yeah… just really want to get back to work. It's been impossible to coordinate anything."
"Well, thankfully after tonight you can head back to work. Shika and Chiharu are more than qualified to care for Kagami." He smiled and tilted his head. "You'll have nothing to worry about here."
Reina nodded. "Yeah, speaking of, I have a plan."
Madara snickered to himself while shaking his head. "Of course you do. Shall we speak in my office so the baby can sleep?"
Reina nodded. "Definitely." She placed Kagami in his crib and gently swaddled him. "There you goooo~ My handsome boy." She bent down and gave him a kiss on the forehead. "I love you."
Madara followed suit. "Sweet dreams. I love you."
The couple shut the door to the nursery and proceeded to make their way downstairs to Madara's office. Once in side, Madara sat at his desk. "Alright, so-" He stopped himself before glaring at Tadao. "Please hold." He said while snatching the bear up and locking it in a chest behind his desk. "Okay… Now, produce."
Reina chuckled. "You and that damn bear."
"You can never be too careful," Madara confessed.
Reina nodded. "I suppose. But he's meant to comfort and protect."
Madara shrugged. "Regardless, what's on your mind?"
Reina leaned in her chair. "So, the last time I spoke with the post office, they said shipping takes a while, but mass items are shipped fastest to increase economic gain in the area in which the product ships from." She sighed. "It's been months since that discussion, and I can only fear that everything has been delivered by this point. While we've been loving our baby and having the best of times, the worst of operations has gone underway. There is no way, that the seal we found on those mirrors in the Land of Wind isn't how the Miyashita clan is utilizing them with their ninjutsu."
Madara nodded. "But we truly need to test this before we submit to it."
"I agree." Reina sighed. "I think we need to go to that sister shop in the Land of Stone and attempt to purchase something for Hashirama." She furrowed her brows. "There is no way he didn't suggest that to try to have their clan infiltrate from within. I say we order one, keep it on watch, and see what happens."
Madara nodded. "If they can take out the Land of Fire's Hokage and his strongest allies by surprise, the feudal lords have no protection. They'll be subject to infiltration, war, and being overthrown. They would definitely try to come after Hashirama first." He leaned back in his chair. "And if they fail… they'll come after the feudal lords and try to influence Hashirama's actions via their authority. If they can manipulate him through the daimyo via money and- well, bargaining for their lives, they will have the ultimate leverage. If the Miyahsita didn't want to rule by themselves, they can rule from the shadows through the Land of Fire's royalty, thus influencing feudal lords from various lands. This could easily turn into world domination."
Reina slowly exhaled and closed her eyes. "This is awful." She shook her head. "We need to tell Hashirama. I think we should tell him now in an emergency meeting and then head out first thing tomorrow morning."
…
Hashirama stood at his desk with a look of uneasiness. "Do you truly think it will come down to this?"
Reina nodded. "If we lose, there will be an all-out war." She looked at him with an almost depressed expression, knowing she would be at the forefront of that.
Tobirama crossed his arms. "So, what do you propose?"
Reina looked towards Madara. "We have a wild plan, but it will take extreme precision, or else things could go terribly wrong."
Mito nodded. "I'm sure we can handle anything. What did you two concoct?"
The five of them stood in the Hokage's office, digesting everything that transpired. Madara piped up. "Here's the plan." He looked at all of them. "Reina and I will go undercover to the mirror shop in the Land of Stone, buy a mirror saying it is a gift for Lord Hashirama Senju."
"Then they'll try to come after me when I'm most vulnerable," Hashirama interjected.
Madara nodded. "Precisely. We would need everyone on watch, take out any infiltrators, question them with the help of the ANBU, and ruin the mirror's seal. If we can execute this plan, we will have a leg up."
Hashirama thought for a moment, before nodding his head. "That's doable. We'll back you from here on out."
Reina smiled. "Thank you. We will be departing tomorrow morning to initiate the plan. Everything will likely happen quickly after that, like a domino effect. We should prepare for battle."
Tobirama nodded. "Agreed. I'll notify the villagers and shinobi and plan accordingly."
"Chiharu and Shika will be taking care of Kagami while we are gone." Reina turned to Mito. "If you could check up on him here and there, that would be greatly appreciated."
Mito nodded. "Absolutely. We'll keep him sealed off."
"Thank you." Reina turned to Madara before addressing everyone. "Well, wish us luck. Tomorrow marks the beginning of the end." She said, earning the determined silence of the room.
…
Reina sat in the moonlit garden, cradling baby Kagami, Madara sitting with his arm around her. She gazed at their baby's chubby face. "I love you so much." She smiled sweetly, caressing his cheek.
Madara smiled down at Kagami. "You are so loved, Kagami. We're going to make sure nothing bad ever happens to you."
Reina sighed as emotions welled up in her. She rested her head on Madara's shoulder. Kagami stirred awake and reached up to pull on Reina's hair with a cheek giggle.
"Ow…" She giggled.
Madara leaned in and swapped out her hair for his. "Here, Kagami." Kagami cooed and tugged on his father's hair with glee. He laughed and caressed their baby's hand. "My sweet boy."
The couple sat in their garden for some time, relishing in their moment of peace before their world turned upside down.
…
Reina and Madara trekked up north to the Land of Stone. The couple were both anxious about leaving their newborn baby for the first time, but it was for the greater good of not only the village or the Land of Fire, but likely the entire shinobi world.
After a few days of travel, the Uchiha couple transformed to mask their appearances before nearing the Land of Stone. The sun began to lower as late evening rounded the sky. Reina and Madara entered the village where the mirror shop resided, making their way around town for a quick bite. Eventually, they meandered through the streets and found the mirror shop.
"Here it is," Madara said while looking up at the storefront.
Reina slowly exhaled. "Yeah… here we go."
The couple entered the chic storefront, a bell ringing as their boots collided with the wood floor. A shop owner, with dark wavy hair, piercing green eyes, and a tall, slender frame approached them with a pleasant grin. "Why hello there! Welcome to Mita Mirrors and Co. How can I be of assistance this evening?"
Reina's breath hitched in her throat. The man who stood before her was none other than Arata Mito, or rather, Arata Miyashita, the same man whom she once tried marrying. Madara, sensing her discomfort, spoke first.
"Yes, well, my wife and I here are members of the Uzumaki clan. One of our people recently married Hashirama Senju, and we would love nothing more than to gift them one of the finest mirror's ever seen." He smiled, thankful they transformed and hig their chakra signatures miles before entering the village.
"Aaah~! Yes, what excellent news. We heard all the way over here about their union." He clasped his hands together. "You are absolutely correct. There is no other gift more splendid than a luxury mirror. We have a wide selection to choose from. Is style in particular that you were looking for?"
"A large, standing mirror, preferably one with a wooden frame," Reina spoke up. "We actually were in the Land of Wind visiting your sister store when he suggested that we come here."
Arata nodded. "As he should." He waved his hand to follow him. "These are our wooden selections over here. We find that many people prefer traditional styles such as these, especially royals who love wood carvings."
Reina turned to the man. "Yes, I've heard that you've acquired the accolade of having feudal lords purchase your mirrors. That's quite promising."
"Ah, please, you're too kind." He waved his hand before placing it softly on his chest. "We are simply dedicated to the craftsmanship of our work. The rest follows." He looked up at her with a smile, but something sinister lay behind his eyes.
…
Madara and Reina stood in Hashirama's office. "They said they'd express ship it as an honor to you." Madara spoke. "Three days."
Tobirama grimaced. "Three days until it gets here? Perfect."
"We already know where we will be putting it," Hashirama smirked. "We'll place it in my bedroom where I will have wood clones of Mito and myself. We reckon that one shinobi will be sent in to scope the situation before more flood in. At least, that's what we are hedging our bets on. It's likely that if their messenger doesn't clear the room, no others will enter. Me and Madara will be waiting above the ceiling tiles to drop down. Tobirama will be situated behind the standing mirror. Mito will hide under the bed, and Reina- you'll be outside the door with ANBU at the ready. Does that sound like a plan?"
Reina nodded with a grin. "Sounds perfect."
"After capturing them…" Tobirama piped up. "I will control the ANBU operation from there and you and Madara can head north to aid the feudal lords. The infiltration will likely happen within a week, so you two will have to make haste."
"Right!" Madara and Reina said in unison.
Hashirama gave a triumphant grin."This meeting is adjourned,"
….
Reina bent down and stroked Kagami's head. "Hello, honey…" She cooed while leaning over his crib. "Mommy and daddy are home, but not for too long… I'm sorry we've been apart."
Madara leaned on the other side. "We're making sure you have a safe village to grow up in. Hopefully, you can forgive us." He rubbed Kagami's round belly. "And we can keep filling this growing belly of yours."
Reina laughed and looked up at Madara with a sweet smile. "I'm sure he'll be beyond happy."
"He's always hungry… I wonder where he gets it from?" Madara teased.
Reina gasped, pretending to be offended. "Check yourself!"
Madra chuckled. "Aaah, the apple doesn't fall far." He sighed and smiled down at Kagami. "He's so beautiful."
Reina closed her eyes with a sweet smile. "He really is." She yawned. "Well, I think it's all of our bedtimes."
Madara nodded in agreeance. "We have a lot ahead of us."
Reina nodded. "Yeah…"
As the couple headed to bed, Madara could tell that something was off with Reina. Madara turned to face his wife, lying on her back, staring up at the ceiling. "What's on your mind?"
Reina's mouth twitched into a small smirk. "You're perceptive as ever." She sighed. "I'm just worried about… everything. Us failing. Me being a tool for war after being a war treaty."
Madara began gently stroking her hair. "Did you ever come up with an alternative plan if the Leaf Village takes a direct hit to avoid destroying neighboring villages and preventing wars between lands?" He paused for a minute. "I know it's a lot to ask and has been on your mind."
Reina turned to him and flattened her lips, hopelessly. "No… I haven't… and if I haven't- I-I don't know who else can."
Madara closed his eyes. "If only there was a way to restore the dead."
Reina stopped and turned to him with a shimmer in her eyes. "That would be… ludicrous."
"Wouldn't it?" Madara sighed. "I wish I could be of better help."
Reina shook her head. "There's nothing we can do if we fail." She closed her eyes. "I just want to sleep."
"Okay… Goodnight, sweetheart." Madara kissed her cheek.
"Goodnight, babe." Reina closed her eyes and drifted off into a deep sleep.
