Hello all! Welcome to my new fanfiction story, Ink and Quill: A Cyrano Retelling! :)
This fanfiction has been a year in the making, as it went through a serious brainstorming journey, in which I was figuring out what this fanfiction story was about and all it would entail. During the year this fanfic went through the brainstorming process, before it finally came into the outlining process, I underwent the rest of my spiritual awakening process, in which I ended up merging with LOTR's Frodo Baggins, before going through a healing/isolation process. It affected my writing and gave me burnout. It wasn't easy, but I'm just starting to come out of it, as well as starting to write and post fanfics again.
My writing style and Frodo's writing style may have merged around the time of my spiritual awakening, but it's also calming down now. So, my writing has definitely changed and improved. I wasn't sure I'd be writing again, but here I am, and here we are, ready for this fanfiction story to be told. :)
Hopefully, it turns out well and we get shorter delays between writing and posting chapters for all my fanfics, including this one.
That said, I present my newest fanfic, a retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, titled Ink and Quill. :)
Part I
Prologue:
The Last Day
It was time. Rosie Cotton, a fair hobbitess wearing a gossamer dress, strolled out of her family's hobbit house. She could sense something wasn't right. It was a force unlike anything she'd ever experienced.
She knew Samwise Gamgee couldn't be far behind, but then Folco Boffin, a young hobbit with a big heart, spotted her.
"Miss! Miss Cotton! Where are you going?" Folco cried out to her from the village of Bywater, concerned about her.
But Rosie didn't listen. She grabbed her pony from the stables, strapped a saddle to her pony, and mounted him. In her haste, and as she watched the morning sunrise creep above the skies above her head, Rosie knew she couldn't waste time.
Samwise Gamgee, it was reported, had left Bag End. Where was he heading? And where were those letters he sent her? The last letter he wrote to her… it told that he was on a secret mission. He wouldn't say why, and that alarmed Rosie.
Rosie had to follow Sam. She had to! There was no way around it. Rosie gazed up at the skies, determined to find Sam. Ooh, maybe she should catch him and everything would be well. Yes, she must hurry. She must find him.
Rosie galloped through the village of Bywater, hopeful she wasn't too late now to stop Sam and tell her how much she cared for him. But would it be enough? She gazed at Folco, who stopped her pony.
Her pony neighed, rearing up on his hind legs. She watched Folco, knowing she loved him, too, as much as she loved Sam. But did she have to choose? Was her heart in the right place?
There was only one way to find out.
Folco chuckled, knowing he had stopped her for a reason. "Come down from there! Let's talk!"
Rosie sighed. It was one thing to be chasing Sam, knowing that if she followed him, she too would be headed into danger. She wanted to be with Sam… she wanted to know he was all right. Folco stopping her pony didn't help. How was Rosie to catch up to Sam now?
These past six months were torture. Did Rosie truly have to choose?
"Climb down from there! Come on!" Folco said, helping Rosie dismount her pony. They locked eyes, each breath taken meant something. And yet, Rosie couldn't help but wonder if her true love had left the Shire.
She wanted to be with Folco, but her heart was deciding for her. As was her soul, and even then, it was hard to say who the victor was.
But Rosie knew…
Rosie knew.
Honestly, I wasn't sure this would work. It took a few rewrites to help this Prologue feel less forceful with the rivalry between Folco and Sam. So, hopefully, it feels more natural. :)
Next chapter, we're going to explore those six months, in the time before this event happened. We'll see how Sam and Folco wound up competing for Rosie's hand as well as Rosie's decision.
Thanks for reading. :) More to come. :)
