2. Concern.
Devyon and Alyssa return to an empty house. Chloe seems to be out, and no note left to say where she's gone!
Initially they're not too worried - she might have gone for a stroll by herself, except she loves the company of others.
By evening they decide they must do something. Rather than call the Doctor, they call Alyssa's boyfriend, Simeon.
Sensing Alyssa's concern, Simeon asks Alyssa to pick him up in Chloe's Tardis from his location on Gallifrey (ref. 9).
"What were you doing?" Alyssa asks curiously.
"I was shrink-wrapping my minor estate," Simeon says. He knows that only the elite are permitted to do this on Gallifrey before they time travel, so he's been trying to arrange for this without his elevation to be fully elite. He's had a few difficult weeks. It should ensure that whenever he eventually returns to Gallifrey, he'll have at least something to come and go on.
This goes over Alyssa's head as she feels she has a much more important agenda.
"Chloe's missing!" she says, looking woefully into his eyes.
"Oh," he says, scarcely taking in what she said. It's so unexpected. Chloe's always around and she always leaves notes for folks, darting back in time to place them, or writing them into a diary ready to be read.
"And she's not left a note," Alyssa adds, to complete her concern. "I'm worried!"
Simeon's unsure what he's expected to do, so he decides he must simply hold Alyssa's hand, yet something practical occurs to him.
"Let's go back in time to when you left the house and watch what happens after you leave for your walk with Devyon." Simeon simply wants to go and see if something happened.
Alyssa looks into Simeon's eyes and breathes easier. At least there's something they can do, after all! She'd been panicking and got stuck. .
As they watch from behind some trees, Alyssa and Simeon see Chloe answer the door to a passing gentleman. They hadn't seen where he'd come from but decide to follow as immediately as possible when they go.
As they follow along the path, Alyssa whispers to Simeon, "I don't recall this path here. There's something odd about it."
Simeon's hair stands up on the back of his neck as he recognises they're in deep difficulty if this is a rift and they're in it when it's collapsed.
They pass through the doorway at the end of the path, holding hands as they watch Chloe stumble.
Simeon pulls Alyssa away from the danger into the shadows.
They're appalled at the Master's callousness and alarmed when wet slop is poured over Chloe.
Then they see Chloe appear nearby, behind the Master, but covered with the muddy slop. Chloe retreats into the shadows and stands still.
Before Chloe can surprise the Master, he activates his personal armband hyperspace transport, disappearing before their eyes.
They run to Chloe, but Chloe can't move.
"What's the matter, Chloe?" Alyssa asks. But Chloe stays silent.
Simeon recognises there's another problem. He reaches and touches Chloe.
"It's cement. Quick drying cement!"
Alyssa screams. She feels as if Chloe has only seconds to live!
Simeon picks up a stone and starts chipping away at Chloe's legs and arms. The cement breaks easily enough and soon Chloe's free of it, her clothing clinging to small fragments of it.
She breathes again. "Thank you! I thought I'd stand behind him and surprise him, but then I thought it better that he doesn't know he's failed to get me, for as long as possible, so I stood perfectly still to avoid making a noise. That's when the cement set!"
"Just as well we're here!" Simeon says.
"Yes, thank you ... How do you come to be here?" Chloe asks.
"You failed to come home, and Alyssa messaged me, then she picked me up in your Tardis," Simeon says.
"Wow, thank you both!"
"We need to get you home and showered!" Simeon says.
"But where are we?" Chloe asks.
They wander around the cave they're in. There appears to be no way out.
That's worrying!
"There was a portal doorway placed just here," Alyssa says. She recalls the way they'd moved in the shadows when they first entered. "It's gone now, though!"
They discover a mechanism for releasing the concrete that the Master must have used, and Simeon notices there's a lantern on a higher shelf, but otherwise the cave is barren.
"And we're depleting the oxygen," Simeon points out. "He must have put just enough in here for his brief stay."
"Where's the light coming from?" Alyssa asks. There's little enough of it and it's fading.
"Some sort of battery powered lantern," Simeon says, contemplating lifting it down from its high rock shelf, but then recognising that if he does the light won't be best placed to light the cave.
The light flickers and dims, indicating that the battery is low.
Alyssa retrieves her messaging device. "I'll message the Doctor."
They watch Alyssa in the growing gloom. "It's not doing it."
"I doubt the signal will get through rock. This cave might be almost anywhere!" Simeon says. "Chloe, your wristwatch ought to get us out."
"I tried it just earlier," Chloe says, "but it failed. I don't know why it failed. Hold onto me and I'll try again."
Her transport again fails to act.
"It worked getting me out of the concrete!"
"Maybe it got wet?" Simeon says practically. "Maybe it'll dry out?"
"True," Chloe says. "That depends how far in any water got. I didn't make it waterproof!"
"So, we're stuck?" Alyssa concludes, "at least for now!"
"I've got my Tardis summoner," Chloe says. "It's in this pocket."
She prises her pocket open against the matted concrete and retrieves the Tardis summoner. It's seen better days! Even in the meagre light from the lantern they can see it's caked with concrete. It feels as if their only hope of escape is fading.
"Do you have a Tardis summoner, Simeon?" Chloe asks.
"No."
"So, you came to rescue me with no protection for yourselves at all?" Chloe asks.
Alyssa looks at Simeon disbelievingly. Surely, here's the person she's relying on for her own safety and he's got no way of getting back?
"If Chloe wasn't here," Alyssa barks, "we'd be history!" She's shocked.
"I'm sorry, we thought it would be fairly straightforward," Simeon apologises. He'd never thought the path might be a rift when they started along it.
Are they doomed?
