Another new chapter? Ooo. I've been writing them up and almost at chapter 60. So I thought I'd upload another one. I thought that this would be a great title for the chapter, even though I understand why she did it, she shouldn't have done it behind their backs since they trusted her to watch Beth.
Disclaimer I don't own The Walking Dead, just my ocs and plotlines.
*TW mentions of self harm and suicide
Callie's POV
She stayed in the Greene house just talking to Lori, getting to know her more and about their family. Basically filling in for all those years that they missed, that they could've had if she was still present in the Grimes family and not given away. Noa was staying in the house, she wanted to be near Beth in case she needed anything. But she sent her outside to refresh her head while herself and Lori stayed in the house.
Lori came back with a tray full of food, about to dispose it but she stopped her.
"Save it. She might eat later." Callie suggests and Lori nods, just grabbing the cutlery but stopped. Callie frowns at her. "What is it?"
"No knife." Was all of her response and quickly ran into Beth's room. Callie's stomach dropped.
Lori came storming out of the room, the knife held in her hand, not bloody.
"Stay here." Lori says, dropping the knife in the sink before running out of the house, looking for Maggie, Noa or Hershel.
Callie looked worryingly at the door to Beth's room. She knocked on the door, just to let her know someone was coming in. She was sitting up, just staring at the wall when she entered. She took a glance around the room, making sure there was nothing sharp in the room. But didn't see anything.
"I know what you're planning." She says gently to her. She doesn't want to accidentally trigger something. "Honey, you're strong for being here right now. I know that it can be hard-
"How do you know?" Beth bluntly asks her, her eyes were emotionless.
She licks her lips for a moment. "I've been through it. Obviously what you're going through is entirely different considering the circumstances. But I understand, and I'm here if you need to talk about it."
Beth nods her head, her eyes full of tears. The first sign of emotion that she has showed.
Callie knew to give her a little space so opened the door. "I'll be in the kitchen if you need me."
She closed the door behind her when Lori came running in panting.
"I couldn't find them. Andrea is gonna find one of them." She pants and Callie nods her head.
She didn't know how much time went with her and Lori sitting in the kitchen, glancing at Beth's door now and again. They didn't want to just stand in her room, it wasn't their place to do so. They didn't even talk, like what could they talk about? The weather? There was nothing they could do but just sit there and keep an eye on her.
Just then the screen door slammed open and Maggie and Noa stormed in, followed by Andrea, they looked worried, looking between the pair of them sitting there. They look eerily similar when they were worried, even there were slight differences, with their noses. But everything else was the same. Andrea had a look of concern on her face.
"What's going on? Is Beth-
"Beth's okay." Callie interrupts Noa and Lori gives her a look. "Well, sit down." Callie urges the twins to do so and they obliged. "Beth was... she had a knife. We... think she's trying to end her life." Maggie goes to get up but Callie stops her. "You can't go in there half cocked."
"Why shouldn't I?" Maggie snaps at her. Noa was crying from knowing the truth.
"She's going through a tough time." Maggie was about to speak but she stops her. "I know you are too. But she's struggling with it. It's probably her first loss ever in her life, right?" Callie asks her.
Maggie nods her head.
Callie hums. "Then she needs you right now. Not angry. But you have to understand why she feels this way. Just talk to her."
Maggie understood, her eyes were filled with tears at that point and goes into Beth's room, shutting the door behind her. That just leaves Noa with them.
But Noa got up, "I'm going to find my dad." She announces before leaving the house.
They could hear talking but it was muffled, which was a good sign.
Herself, Andrea and Lori were just in the kitchen. Lori sitting on the counter top while Andrea was leaning against it. She was sitting at the table, picking at the skin on her fingers.
"T-Dog is on watch." Andrea informs her and she nods her head.
She notices an absence in the room. "Where's Hershel and Noa?"
Just then there was arguing coming from Beth's room and Callie winces.
"Noa has gone to find her dad. But probably doesn't want to deal with what's going on." Lori informs her and Andrea looks at the door separating them from the arguing siblings. "It's a family affair. We'll let them work it out."
Andrea looks at Lori like she was insane. Meanwhile the screaming increased. "That's working it out?"
"When Beth stops fighting, that's when it's time to worry." Lori dismisses and even Callie couldn't see where she was coming from. She and Andrea shared a look.
"You are being so selfish!" Maggie screams.
Andrea sighs. "This could've been handled better."
Lori frowns. "How so?"
"You shouldn't have taken the knife away." Andrea points out to her.
It felt like time stopped and the room fell silent.
"Excuse me?" Lori looked pissed off.
"You were wrong, like Dale taking my gun. That wasn't your decision. She has to choose to live on her own. She has to find her own reasons." Andrea explains to Lori which Callie agreed with.
Beth does need to find a way to live on her own, not anyone forcing a choice on her.
"Want me to tie a noose for her?" Lori's voice was dripping with sarcasm.
"If she's serious. She'll figure out a way." Andrea points out to her, anger seeping into her voice now.
"Doesn't mean I can't stop her or let her know that I can." Lori was not listening to Andrea, well the middle lines, that it needs to be Beth's choice.
Andrea scoffs. "That has nothing to do with it, Lori. She only has so many choices in front of her, and she believes the best one is suicide."
Lori snaps. "That's not an option."
"It is." Callie mutters and Andrea looks at her then.
Andrea nods her head in agreement. "She doesn't need to be yelled at or treated like a child."
"She needs a loaded gun, right?" Lori snaps at Andrea, and she looks taken a back.
"Lori." Callie scolds. That's not something to bring up.
Lori shakes her head. "No, Callie, she needs to hear it." She pauses and finally looks at Andrea. "You'll understand if I don't send you in there."
Andrea was pissed off at this point. "I came through it."
Lori snorts. "And became such a productive member of the group. Let Maggie handle this her way."
Andrea narrows her eyes. "I contribute. I help keep this place safe."
"The men can handle this on their own. They don't need your help."
Callie frowns at that. "Excuse me? What am I doing?"
"You just make lists and involve yourself. You do nothing to help." Lori argues and she scoffs.
Here we go. She knew this would happen.
But before she could have a go at Lori, Andrea speaks up.
"I'm sorry. What would you have me do? Callie is an important member too, a leader. She's busy making supply lists, planning for the winter which we could all die if she doesn't do it. She's making the hard choices that the 'men' can't do." Andrea points a finger at her.
Callie was grateful for Andrea. Even though she's a pain in the ass, she's sticking up for her.
Lori finally turns to her then. "Oh, there's plenty of work to go around."
"Are you serious? Everything falls apart, you're in my face over skipping laundry?" Andrea couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"It puts a burden on the rest of us, on me and Carol, and Patricia, Josie, Maggie. Cooking, cleaning, and caring for Beth. And you- you don't care about anybody but yourself. You sit up on that RV, working on your tan, with a shotgun in your lap."
"No, I'm on watch against walkers." Andrea corrects her. "This is what matters, not fresh mint leaves in the lemonade."
"We're providing stability. We are trying to create a life worth living." Lori argues.
"Are you kidding me?" Andrea looked at Lori like she was insane.
Callie was done being in this conversation. But she couldn't exactly leave since she's involved with the whole Beth thing.
"Look, I went after Rick. I took down two walkers."
Callie had to stifle a laugh.
"After crashing Maggie's car." Andrea points out to her.
"Don't act like you're the only one who can take care of herself." Lori mutters.
Andrea gives her a look. "Ever apologise for that?"
The three of them knew the answer. She didn't.
"Crashing her- You're insane." Lori laughs.
Andrea shakes her head. "No, you are. And you're the one that's self centered, the way you take it all for granted."
"My husband is out there for the hundredth time. My son was shot. Don't you dare tell me I take this for granted." Lori was seething at this point and Callie was looking between the two women.
But Andrea remained calm. "You don't get it, do you? Your husband came back from the dead, your son too. And now you've got a baby on the way. The rest of us have piled up our losses, me, Carol, Amy, Beth, Damien and his siblings. But you just keep on keeping on-"
"We have all suffered." Lori interrupts.
Andrea continues talking like she didn't interrupt. "Playing house, acting like the queen bee, laying down rules for everybody but yourself. You know what? Go ahead. Go in there and tell that little girl that everything's gonna be okay, just like it is for you. She'll get a husband, son, baby, boyfriend." She snarks. Lori turns to Andrea. "She just has to look on the bright side."
Andrea storms out of the room.
Callie knew it was her time to leave the house, so she did. She did wonder how Rick and Shane were dealing with Randall. They should be on their way back by now if things go smoothly, but knowing Shane, it wouldn't.
Noa's POV
She couldn't find her dad anywhere, which meant he was herding the cattle with Jimmy. So instead she met up with her sister who looked distraught. They cried together, their family was falling apart ever since Shane opened up the barn. Maggie told her of all the things Beth said to her, how she wanted all three of them to commit suicide in the same bed. She was horrified. She wanted to help Beth, but how could she? In any normal world, they would get her to talk to a doctor and go on antidepressants, maybe even go to a hospital, but now? What can they do?
Her and Maggie were heading back to the house to relieve Andrea of watching their sister. Andrea was very kind to watch over her while they got some air to cool off.
They heard Lori talking to Patricia and continued to Beth's room. However when they walked in, the bed was empty and the adjoined bathroom was shut. That's when they heard crying.
"Beth?" Maggie calls out.
They heard a smash and they look at each other worryingly for a second before banging on the bathroom door.
"Beth!" She calls out, smacking on the door with all her might but it wouldn't budge.
Maggie jiggled on the door knob and it wouldn't open.
"Maggie? Noa?" Lori calls out and she sees them banging on the door. She looks at the them concerned.
"She's in there. I heard glass." Maggie tells her and Lori pales and she quickly joins the pair of them.
"Beth, please." Noa cries.
Lori presses her ear to the door. "Beth, you alright?"
The crying continues.
"Don't do this, Beth. Don't do this. Open up, please." Maggie begs, jiggling the door knob. "God, I left her with Andrea." She mutters.
Noa notices Lori have a look on her face.
"Where's the key?" She asks the pair of them.
"I don't know." Maggie shrugs. She smacks her hand on the door again. They could still hear Beth crying. There were tears in her eyes hearing her sister cry.
"Bethy?" She calls out.
Maggie squeezes her eyes shut and Noa notices tears in her eyes. "Beth, honey, please open the door. I'm not mad. I'm not mad, Beth."
Lori comes back with a fire poker. "Maggie." Noa grabs her sister and pulls her back. "Hang on." She grits and sticks the poker in the gap of the door, she manages to crack it open.
The door opens revealing Beth, and a smashed mirror. She turns to them, tears running down her face, her hand holding her wrist, blood dripping. "I'm sorry." She cries.
"It's okay." Maggie sobs.
"Beth." Noa cries and they immediately go to her, and guide her outside the room when their dad walked in.
"Bethy?" He asks, his face pale at the sight of a bloody wrist.
"I'm sorry, daddy." She sobs and they guide her to the dining table to get her stitched up. Dale was in the room and saw her wrist, he didn't comment or stay just quickly left the house which they were all grateful for.
Beth practically collapsed in the chair, sobbing. Noa was rubbing her back. Their dad didn't comment on anything that happened, which might have been a good thing. Now was not the time to discuss her depression. Maggie looked at her, pissed off and she knew what they needed to do.
They just had to wait.
"We'll give you some space." Noa tells her dad and he nods his head, opening up his sewing kit as Beth holds a towel to her wrist, still crying.
"I need to find Andrea." Maggie seethes and Noa agrees. Lori comes with them as well.
They didn't have to go far as Andrea ran towards the house, clearly Dale was a gossip.
"Where were you?" Maggie hisses at her.
"I heard. Is she alright?" Andrea asks, avoiding the question.
When her sister got mad, it was not the best place to be. She can hold a grudge. She is not the forgive and forget type when it comes to her family. And Noa was right beside her on that.
"She would be if you had stayed with her. Where were you?" Maggie presses.
"How bad is she?" Andrea asks her.
Maggie didn't answer and neither did she. They were just staring at her waiting for the answer. Where did she go while she said she would stay and watch over their sister? They trusted her and she betrayed it.
"It wasn't deep." Lori answers the question and Andrea smiles.
What the fuck?
"She wants to live. She made her decision." The damn woman was nodding like she was proud. Was this girl on drugs or something?
Both herself and Maggie looked at the woman in front of them horrified. How could she be smiling right now? Their sister tried to kill herself under Andrea's watch, and she's smiling because she made a choice. She was ready to throttle her.
"What the fuck, Andrea?" She asks and Andrea looks confused for a second but before she could question it, Maggie interrupts.
"She tried to kill herself." Maggie argues back.
"No, she didn't." Was this girl on the same planet as them or in Andrea land?
Maggie gave her a look. "Our father is stitching her wrist right now." She was gesturing between herself and Noa.
"She'll live." She goes to step onto the porch, clearly to speak to Beth.
There was absolutely no way that Andrea was speaking to her little sister again. So she stepped in front of her and Maggie does the same.
"Stay away from her." She threatens. "From all three of us. Don't you dare step foot inside this house again."
Andrea looks at Lori for help but Noa glares at her.
"Go, before I give you another bleeding nose like Callie did." She threatens her and Andrea took the hint and left.
They both turn to go back inside the house when Lori stops the pair of them.
"I'm not gonna say she was right, but Beth has made her choice. She wants to live and now she knows it... and sometimes you have to cross the line."
Well that's the end of the chapter. It was a very hard one to write. But we're so close to the end of season 2. It's not gonna be many changes from here on out, not until the winter anyway.
