Once we're all settled, we go back downstairs to find Carlisle in the living room with the TV on and Esme in the kitchen.
"I'm going to see if your mom needs help," I tell Edward, lifting up and kissing his cheek.
"I'm sure she'll appreciate that."
I head into the massive kitchen that belongs in a magazine and find Esme drizzling garlic and oil over some bread.
"Anything I can help with?" I ask.
"You can stir the sauce," she says. "I'm making one of Edward's favorites. His nana's spaghetti."
"I'm sure he'll be thrilled. It smells heavenly."
I stir the pot as she puts the bread in the oven. She then stirs up the noodles from beside me and declares it done. We mix the two together, and it looks delicious. By the time we plate the spaghetti, the bread is done, and she pulls it out of the oven.
She calls for Carlisle and Edward to come get their plates, and Edward's eyes light up, seeing the meal.
"Mom, this looks amazing. Thank you."
She smiles, patting his cheek. "I'll have to give Bella the recipe so she can make it for you now."
"I would really appreciate that," I say.
Esme smiles at me. "Come on. Let's eat."
We share a comfortable conversation as we eat. Esme talks about her garden and how she grows her own vegetables and fruits. I'm jealous because I always wanted a green thumb, but mine is black and kills even succulents. Edward catches Carlisle up on his work while Esme asks me more about my family.
Just as we finish and clear the table, we hear the front door open.
"Oh, it must be Rose," Esme says, drying her hands.
We all go to the foyer and find Rosalie and motherfucking Emmett entering. I cock my brow as Emmett smiles at me.
"Surprise!" Rose says. "I brought my boyfriend."
"You have a boyfriend?" Esme asks.
"And it's Emmett?" Edward asks.
"We've kept it on the down low just in case, but … I figured Thanksgiving would be a good time to introduce him. Mom, Dad, this is Emmett McCarthy. He's a firefighter/EMT from Ashbury."
Carlisle's eyes looked surprised as he holds his hand out. "Nice to meet you, Emmett."
"You too, Dr. Cullen."
"Just Carlisle and Esme," Esme says, leaning in for a hug. "This is wonderful. Both of my kids are here with their partners. It's going to be a nice holiday."
Rose and Esme walk ahead, and I hold Emmett back for a moment. "Since when are you dating Rose?"
"About three months now. We haven't told anyone, and I was a little unsure of crashing Thanksgiving, but she insisted it was time. I really like her, Bella."
"I'm happy for you. And, hey, you just took the pressure off of me, so thanks." I laugh softly.
I help Esme with the dishes as Rose catches us up on her relationship, and Emmett spends time with Edward and Carlisle in the living room. We have a good evening just chatting by the fireplace, and I learn more about Edward's childhood. He skipped two grades in elementary school and graduated at fifteen. Then he went on to the University of Maryland for his undergrad and Dartmouth for medical school. Apparently, he's a genius, which doesn't surprise me.
Rose took a similar course, skipping one grade and graduating early. She also did her undergrad at Maryland, but then went on to Vanderbilt for medical school. Carlisle and Esme raised two smart people, and I'm in awe.
Around eleven, Edward and I head upstairs to his room. I take some Advil for my face and head, and he asks if I need some ice, which I nod to in agreement. My cheek is really killing me, but that's what I get for not taking meds all day.
I wash my face and put on lotion while he's gone, and then throw on an old T-shirt and pajama shorts as he comes back into the room. He wraps his arms around me from behind and kisses my neck.
"Let's get in bed and get this ice on you."
I nod, turning my head to kiss him. "Sounds good, handsome."
We crawl into bed, and he holds the ice pack to my face for me as I lay against his bare chest. It feels nice. There's something sweet about him taking care of me.
I don't own Twilight.
