Solene walked through the castle, talking to Onyx. She explained her friend Jeannie's backstory and kept her magic a secret. Onyx felt sorry for her, knowing he wasn't the cause of her homelessness. However, he did sense her magic. Just about as strong as his, but it seems she uses her magic to keep the princess safe. Something that he was okay with.
"It's sad to hear that she lost everyone she loved. From what I saw during breakfast, you and your parents treat her well." He said.
"Jeannie is like a sister to me. Mother and Father wanted to make her a princess like me, but she was better as a maid. Still, that didn't change the girl I saw all those years ago." Solene said, smiling.
"And what of Sir Fredlord?" Onyx asked him.
"Him? That knight is too full of him. He's been telling tall tales about her so-called heroics. Slaying dragons, saving villages, the only thing that man did was make himself look better in front of the other maids." Solene said, huffing.
"I see," Onyx said, frowning.
'Slaying my kind isn't easy. We have very tough scales. While the knights can still hurt us, we don't go down so easily.' He thought.
"Princess, may I ask you what you think of dragons?" He asked.
"Well, I heard a lot of stories of how princesses were kidnapped by dragons. Lots of times, it ends with the dragon being slayed and the knight saving the princess. Something I know Sir Fredload is hoping for, but I also understand that dragons as creatures as well. I don't think they are evil. I think they're just doing what their instincts tell them. Yes, I don't like it when they attack the villagers or burn down villagers, but I also understand that Dragons are just doing what they think." Solene said.
Onyx nodded, hiding his surprise. He never thought of himself as evil. he was doing what he thought was right. Truly, he was tired of being alone. Being near the princess was helping make that feeling fade away.
"Sir Onyx, may I ask, do you have anyone special?" Solene asked, blushing a bit.
"I do not. I'm well aware that I'm at the age to be wed, but I have yet to find a girl that I would love to marry." Onyx said.
Solene was surprised. He's not married?! That means she could choose him! Taking a breath to calm herself, she faces him and smiles.
"I'm sorry to hear that. My birthday is coming up and I'll soon be ready to wed. Sadly, Sir Fredlord thinks he's the only one who thinks that he'll wed me. However, it's my choice and I made it clear I won't wed him." She said.
"I see. Just before seeing you, I had a run-in with him. He was threatening me to stay away from you. Like I have control over how I met you. You're a smart woman. I can tell you wish to have me around." Onyx said, making her blush more.
"Thank you, Sir Onyx." She said, feeling her heart flutter.
Onyx smiles, bowing. However, his eyes notice that the sun is setting and that could mean his magic will undo.
"Forgive me, princess must I must take my leave." He said, confusing her.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"While I had a great time talking to you, I told my parents I was going on a walk. I need to return before they worry. As you know, being out at night isn't the safest time." He told her.
Solene frowns but understands his reason.
"My parents were hoping that you stay for dinner, but I take it your home is far from the castle?" She asked.
"Yes, near the mountains. Don't worry. I'm quicker than I look." Onyx said, smiling.
He then took the princess's hand and kissed it. Solene blushed before Onyx bed her good night and started to head off. She watched him until he disappeared over the hill. Solene thought over the many talks she had with him and she came to understand that he was much more than he looked. She made up her mind. She found the person she wanted to marry.
Meanwhile,
Onyx flew in the air, back in his dragon form. His day with the princess was a fruitful one. Sure that knight threatened him, but he knew he stood no chance. The Maid was close to the princess and he had no doubt she sensed his magic. However, she didn't make any move against him. So far, everything was working out. A few problems, but he was pleased with his progress so far.
"Until next time, princess." He said, flying away from the castle.
That night,
After Solene informed her parents why Onyx left, she retreated to her room, ignoring Sir Fredlord. Jeannie had also followed her, helping the princess get ready for bed.
"He was so sweet, Jen. He knew very well I wasn't like most princesses. He told me that he knew I'm a smart woman and heard my thoughts. I think I might have found the one!" Solene said as Jeannie brushed her hair.
"Sol, as happy as I am to see you have a great time, I need to remind you that there's still much we don't know about Onyx. But I will agree he's a better choice than that moron." Jeannie said.
"Still worried about his magic?" Solene asked.
"A bit. However, I'm more worried about what Sir Fredlord is planning. He was talking to other maids during your talk with him to find anything he could force your parents to refuse the choice of marrying you. So far, the other maids like him, and he never did anything with them." Jeannie said.
Solene frowns. What was with that stupid knight? She was no prize. He failed to understand that she was no trophy. Plus, he flirted with just about every maid in the castle. Solene made it clear that she would never marry him. He was not the knight he made himself out to be.
"Princess?" Jeannie asked, breaking her from her thoughts.
"I'm fine, Jen. Just trying to get that moron out of my head." She said, sighing.
Jeannie nodded. While she did wish her friend was more careful, she did trust her. Soon the princess got ready for bed and Jeannie placed her magic on her to keep her safe. With that, she blew out the candle and left the room. Jeannie headed to her room that she shared with other maids, keeping an eye out for Sir Fredlord.
However, outside, a group of knights that were from a rival kingdom was preparing to attack. Seeing the last of the candlelight going out, they started to move, using the shadows to hide. The archers picked off the guards from the walls before they reached the draw bridge. They set ladders and climb up them. They just reached the control bridge when the other knights spotted them. A fight broke out, but the draw bridge was already down.
Many people were woken by the fighting and the king and queen did their best to get their knights in order. Solene had run up to her parents, hoping they were ok.
"Mother! Father!" She said as Jeannie followed behind her.
"Solene, are you okay?" The Queen asked.
"I'm fine, but what happened? Where did these knights come from?" She asked.
"We are still waiting for the reports. I'm not sure how they were unable to slip under our defenses." The King said, worried.
Solene nods, also worried. Before she could come up with an idea, a loud roar was heard. The royal family looked up, seeing a dragon as black as the night sky flying overhead. It soon flew near the opposite army and started to attack them. Surprised, the royal family watched as the dragon fought against the enemy.
"Is that...a black dragon?" Solene asked, shocking her parents.
They heard stories of black dragons. The most dangerous out of all dragons and very hard to kill. Sir Fredlord was surprised to see him before getting ready to attack it. However, its glare made him think twice about it. Onyx had spotted this army during his trip back and was secretly following them. When he saw them attacking the castle, he attacked them. Though no one would understand him, he wasn't about to let them hurt Solene or her family.
Many knights from both sides tried to attack him, but their arrows and swords did not affect them. Suddenly, he heard a scream, making him turn to the castle. His eyes narrowed as an enemy knight had sneaked up on the royal family and was trying to kidnap Solene. Jeannie couldn't use her magic as the family did know about it, but he was not going to let that happen.
He already spotted Sir Fredlord calming he would recuse her, making him roll his eyes. With a powerful flap of his wings, he took off toward the castle and floated close to the balcony, shocking everyone there. Onyx growls before claiming his jaws around the knight before tossing him away. Onyx looks at Solene, who is surprised to see him. The two looked at each other before Onyx turned and flew back into the battle.
"Solene! Are you okay?" Her father asked, shocked.
"I'm fine." She said, still surprised.
That dragon just saved her. Why did it save her? She watched as it burned and smashed the enemy army while leaving her family's army alone. With that black dragon's help, the enemy army was left with no choice but to retreat.
Onyx blew smoke out of his nostrils before hearing Sir Fredlord yelling at him. Rolling his eyes, he softly blew the foolish knight away. He looks at the castle and his eyes lock on Solene's. The Princess looked back, finding thing dragon's eyes familiar. The dragon then closes his eyes before taking off. Solene watched him fly away, lost on what she was thinking.
"Onyx?" She whispers.
And that ends the returned chapter of Onyx, the Black Dragon. A little more time with Onyx and Solene before Onyx had to leave before he changed back into his dragon form. Though Solene doesn't know she wants to marry a dragon, she does like Onyx more than Fredlord. And if anyone remembers their histories of the Medevil Times, things weren't as great as some are led to believe. An enemy army attacked under the cloak of darkness and caught the Royal Family by surprise. Luckily, Onyx had spotted them on the way back to his cave and returned to help The Royal Family.
As you read, Onyx saved Solene before she was kidnapped and it seems Solene believes the dragon that saved her is the nobleman that she likes. Of course, since this still had more to cover, that won't be uncovered until much later.
And you are all aware that this is only one of three stories where I had a plot take place in Medevil times. There's Phantom Knights, which I canceled. Not because of the lack of reviews. I was more confused on where the reviewers went after bringing in a new character. The other is Human-Elf War, which I plan to get back to at some point. I do want to try writing more ideas in medieval times. And can't just be with Danny Phantom. Heck, I've been thinking over some Elder Scrolls stories I want to try and they are nothing but OC Characters.
