Chapter 7

Rin sat in the dining room and Gandalf tried to do his job of trying to get Bilbo to join in on the quest. Her mind reeled in wonder if Bilbo wouldn't join, would that leave everything up to her to figure out how to get into the mountain? It was already bad enough for her to be there and try to help when she could. Rin looked out the door and noticed Bilbo walking past the dining room.

"It appears we have lost our burglar. Probably for the best. The odds were always against us. After all, what are we? Merchants, miners, tinkers, toy-makers; hardly the stuff of legend." Balin said softly as he looked at Thorin.

"There are a few warriors amongst us," Thorin said, looking over at Balin.

"Old warriors," Balin said, shaking his head softly.

"I will take each and every one of these dwarves over an army from the Iron Hills. For when I called upon them, they came. Loyalty. Honor. A willing heart. I can ask no more than that." Thorin said, letting out a breath. "And the ranger of the North I'd even accept her help."

Rin looked over hearing that Thorin was willing enough to trust her to help them out with this mission. She bit her lip softly as she twirled her ring on her finger.

"You don't have to do this. You have a choice. You've done honorably by our people. You have built a new life for us in the Blue Mountains, a life of peace and plenty. A life that is worth more than all the gold in Erebor."

Thorin held out the key Gandalf had given to him. "From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day when the dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice, Balin. Not for me."

"Then we are with you, laddie. We will see it done." Balin said, putting his hand on Thorin's shoulder and patting it lightly.

AUJAUJ

Rin sat near the window looking out solemnly.

The dwarves gathered in the living room, smoking their pipes by the fire. They all began to hum and soon Thorin began to sing and the others soon joined in with him. Gandalf listened from nearby as the dwarves sang.

"Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old

We must away ere break of day

To find our long-forgotten gold

The pines were roaring on the height

The winds were moaning in the night

The fire was red, and its flaming spread

The trees like torches blazed with light"

Rin took a breath as she got up to her feet and headed outside, taking a soft breath. She looked up into the sky, pursing her lips together as she wrapped her arms around herself. She heard footsteps headed her way and she turned her head seeing Fili and Kili both there.

"My lady." The two brothers bowed their heads in greeting.

"Oh…" She cleared her throat shyly. "You don't have to call me my lady." She said softly as she sat on the swinging chair outside of Bilbo's.

"What do you want us to call you?" Kili questioned tilting his head slightly as he looked at her, his brows furrowed together.

"My name. Rin." She said softly looking at Kili.

"Why join our cause?" Fili asked softly. "Don't you have a family?"

Rin bit her lip softly looking up into the sky. "I do. A little brother. But he's under the care of family friends…" She admitted softly.

Fili and Kili came over closer to where she sat.

"You miss him don't you?" Kili asked softly, joining her on the swinging chair with his brother on the other side of her.

Rin let out a soft chuckle. "I do. But he would be with me soon enough. He's after all a Ranger as well, but with all of those orcs out there it's not safe for him to be with the rest of the Rangers. After all, he is still very much a child."

"Aren't you a child?" Kili questioned tilting his head slightly in thought.

Rin shook her head. "No, I'm an adult in the race of man. But in your standards… I guess I would still be a child." She shrugged her shoulders.

"Are you sure that you want to do this?"

Rin nodded her head. "Yes. I'm here to help with getting your homeland back. I may not be able to have my home, but you and your line can have yours back."

"You can't have your home?"

Rin shook her head softly. "I came to the choice and I'm sure my brother will do the same that the Throne of Gondor should remain empty. Live in the life of exile." Rin got up to her feet sleepily. "Anyways… I'm going to try to get some rest. We have a long way to travel and there is no point in traveling tired." She slowly headed back inside.

Kili looked at his brother. "Fee… she's a princess."

Fili pursed his lips together in concern. He couldn't understand why she wanted to keep herself in exile. Didn't she want to be with her people?
