A/N: My deepest apologies for the lack of update on my other fanfics. It took me a long while to sort my personal affairs. So here's a short one shot to get the ball rolling. (May be expanded in the future)

This is inspired by Midnight Memories by Daydreamer on AO3 and maybe a little bit of KazenoYouni's Ayakashi ~Wandering Spirits~ on FF I think (Highly recommend to read them). But since I have been bingeing Nurarihyon no Mago again, you get this weird mishmash of different ideas from various demon anime. May also contain some elements from the Underworld film series.

Also, I haven't written in a while so please pardon the obvious rustiness. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this one

Many believed the Kyuubi no Kitsune is but a legend. A tale meant to scare children.
Many believed he was born a demon, and born evil. Many believed he comes to bring misfortune, but time and again he was killed and reborn in another era to repeat another cycle of destruction. Maybe the legends are true. Maybe it is coming true. Who can hope to fight him? Who can dare protect the world from such evil?

Itachi gazed upon the darkened skies to the west. The night keepers reported strange rumors of activity from the West— Rumblings of demonic activity that used to be absent under the care of the Onmyoji clans that protected the capital. He frowned. A powerful seal is supposed to protect the lands there, under the guard of the Emperor's favored guardians. But now, even here in the East, he could feel the dark energies that rivals his own vampires. The vampire elder narrowed his eyes, sensing a turbulent storm approaching.

"My lord… messengers from the were beasts arrive."

Itachi's frowned deepened. Since his rule for over two thousand year, the were beasts and vampires, have never interacted amicably, with the vampires viewing the beasts as common demons, mere livestock to feed on to avoid antagonizing the humans. But since the treaty establishing designated hunting zones for supernatural beings, they have never approached the vampires, keeping the peace for over five hundred years.

Intrigued, he turned to his aide.

"Izumi, prepare the reception hall… I will grant their audience there." Itachi said as he stared further at the storm clouds to the west.

"As you wish my lord."

"Our scouts are positive my lord. The Nine Tailed Kitsune has awakened. Even now, the demons of the west battle with the Emperor's Onmyoji. They seem to battle for control over the imperial seal guarding the gates of hell."

Itachi frowned. He sensed the evil growing from the west. But he never knew this situation would be so dire. The lands of the West has always been untouched by dark creatures such as they, for the onmyoji fiercely protect their lands, the seat of the holy light of the nation- the Imperial Capital.

"If the demons, succeed in opening the gate, the balance of this world will be thrown into disarray. The onmyoji are losing. The council sends us to propose alliance and intervene."

Itachi stared at the messenger with unmoving eyes, but deep within him, questions arise. Nobody has actually seen the Kitsune before, even a being as old as he. But it is said, that events have been recorded in history, of a fox that wreaks havoc and brings misfortune. At first it presented with one tail. Then in every appearance, it gains one. Now it appears it has nine. Each tail represents its strength and legends foretell that once it does so, its full powers is realized. And Itachi would incline to believe, considering how it's overwhelming the Emperor's favored protectors, and how it worries the council of were beasts, worries them enough to consider alliance with their long time enemies.

"Do we have further intel on the situation? Can we corroborate their story?"

Itachi turned to Kisame, one of his most trusted lieutenants.

"I'm afraid that proves difficult Itachi-sama. None of our night keepers has ever ventured that far. I sent Kakuzu there to investigate, but so far he hasn't returned."

"I understand."

Then he turned to the messengers.

"Tell your council that we will consider their offer. I will send a messenger once we have fully assessed the situation."

The messengers bowed before taking their leave.

"What do you think, Shisui?" Itachi said as he turned to his cousin, a veteran of the Uchiha royal family, once considered candidate for the throne, but refused for some reason.

"Mahh…. It's a difficult situation for sure, Itachi. I'm sure you of all people have sensed just how critical this situation is. But to face this, we need to make sure our people are equipped. If the Onmyoji are losing, what hope do we have? Our powers aren't suited to fight against demons. There will be casualties."

"I agree. While you and me are powerful, not every vampire is a fighter. Centuries of decadence has dulled our senses."

"It's not your fault Itachi. You have your own troubles as well. The clan knows it."

Itachi's eyes narrowed. But at Shisui's words, something clicked at the back of his mind. No doubt the were beasts are powerful in their own right. But the vampires have no real fighting force, except for the limited night watchers, which are more to deter humans from ever encroaching on their lands.

But there lies the answer.

"Unless…. May be he can…."

Shisui's eyes widened.

"You can't mean him, Itachi. Look, I love you both, even more than a family should." Shisui's hand managed to grasp Itachi, and the vampire lord noted that Shisui's shaking. "But even I would fear unleashing him again… Not after what he went through. His soul is but a fragment. With every death of that mortal, a part of his soul dies. He is not the Sasuke you knew, not the honorable and cute little brother you love and doted on."

Itachi knew the story. He has been through it all by his brother's side. He has borne witness to the fracturing of his brother's soul, of his very mind.

"I know… I know why he was sealed. I was the one who did it… to my own brother." Itachi said, his hand shaking against Shisui's. "But only he can fight to the level that even the Onmyoji cannot. His soul, though fractured it may have been, is precisely strong because it is in that state."

"He's dangerous Itachi. The clan would never agree."

"He's my brother, Shisui. And I am Elder. My decision stands." Itachi withdrew his hand from Shisu, the other vampire looking at him helplessly, he saw the resolve in Itachi's face.

Itachi turned from him and disappeared in a cloud of bats.

Imperial Capital, At the Same Time

Columns of crimson and dark tendrils dotted the once shining symbol of human achievement. The seat of the Empire, overran by demons. Small skirmishes occur here and there but it is apparent that humans are on the run and the Onmyoji are fighting a losing battle.

"Pure fist!" Hinata slammed her fist into a fox shadow. "Neji-niisama!"

"Lady Hinata… Please… go without me… Run to the castle."

"No, I won't leave you here." Hinata yelled as she ran to her brother, wincing as she saw blood pooling on his leg, a huge scratch mark left his kimono in tatters at the back.

"Touching…" A deep voice echoed behind them. "I will give you one chance to go… All I ever want is my mate… Stop interfering humans. My quarrel is not with you. You will not deny my long standing wish."

Fox tails felled the trees around them, sending forth a strong gust of wind.

"And we keep telling you, the seal here leads to hell. Your mate whoever he may be is not here." Neji gasped as the huge demon stomped his paw in front of him, eyes glowing crimson.

"Liar! Behind this seal… behind this seal is my long standing wish. My beloved is waiting for me. No one shall come between us again. He fought for me before. Now it is my turn."

Neji closed, his eyes, noting the mixture of anguish and sadness behind those crimson eyes.

"Leave human. Don't stand in my way. My quarrel is not with you."

"You… you're even more of an idiot than before." A vampire appeared, signaling to the Onmyoji to leave. Crimson eyes met pure black ones. But the eyes he met are not crazy or blood thirsty like the ones that faced Itachi. It was thrumming with anticipation and clarity.

The demon growled, tendrils of crimson appeared behind him as his tail flail wildly. "Who dares interrupt—"

"Shut up, idiot." The vampire smirked… His body drew fearlessly to the giant demon in front of him. "I've been waiting a long time for you."

He had been dreaming of him…. Again… Years of sealing has restored his mind somewhat, but always focused on one aspect of his long years of existence, all he can think of is the lives of the human he cherished and loved. First a knight… then a peasant… a geisha…. Nine different persons, nine different lifetimes… All smiling warmly at him… All taken early from him, the light from vibrant blue eyes snuffed as soon as the vampire takes him in his arms. All different mortals, but all with one heart… one soul that calls to the vampire's own.

And every time his love is taken from him, a fox, sometimes with one tail, others with more would always watch him mourning. It's as if the fox itself, though spirit it may be mourns their cursed existence.

A cursed existence perhaps, of a vampire and human daring to defy the gods and form union between them- an existence that should never have collided. For night and day are never meant to unite, light and darkness never meant to thread the paths of fate together but as separate existence. One feeds, and one is fed upon. Thus the natural order of things.

Their very union defies the very balance of the world, an affront to the natural order of predator and prey as preordained by the cosmos. And still they fought. Believing that destiny is made, not followed.

Destiny is not set in stone as the gods intended, but something to be conquered and surmounted.

Sasuke scoffed and basked himself in the light of that smile, the light in his dark prison throughout the centuries. Yet his long darkness would be broken and as he open his eyes, the familiar crimson eyes of his brother would greet him.

Equally powerful as him, even more so… a being that even the divines dare not touch.

"Nii-san?"

"Sasuke… The world is in need of you… Our clan is in need of you again."

Sasuke gasped and thread on shaky knees, his long slumber has somewhat weakened him, yet his powers are still with him.

"They release me only when they have need of me eh?"

Itachi sighed.

"I'm not asking you for our people, brother. I'm asking you as your brother."

Sasuke studied his brother's face for a long while, and decided that for Itachi, that is as good of a begging his going to get. Before he could respond, a familiar feeling embraced him. While the clouds darkened outside, all he could feel was the warmth in his cold bones. Where a storm of mana and crimson energy rages outside, all he could see was the sun…. He sniffed the air around him. And before Itachi could even react, he took off with speed that left even the great Vampire elder wondering.

Back at the Capital….

"Foolish mortal. You don't know the powers you're dealing with. It had been etched in my soul since I was conceived. Carved in the very recesses of my mind. This is where I would finally reunite with my beloved, never to be separated again. If only I could break the seal… if only I could free him. Not even you shall stand in my way."

Sasuke smirked. "Oh? Is that so, Naruto? You're as stupid as ever. This is not my seal. You would know that if you only listen."

"Are you saying I'm a Liar? Do not stand in my way night walker. My quarrel is not with you. My long standing wish will NOT be denied."

Sasuke sighed. "Still as stupid as ever. Not even thinking." He paused before closing his eyes.

"I missed you, dobe…" He opened his eyes, crimson with pinwheels. They glow with desire and longing, of love and lust.

And that seemed to give pause to the demon itself. The very sight of that familiar crimson eyes evoked changed so sudden that the Onmyoji fighting and running around them stopped in their tracks. The torrent of vile air and destructive energies stopped. And Sasuke could feel it again, the warm embrace of the Sun… A golden light that banished crimson tendrils and black fox shadows.

The demon before him slowly shrunk in size. Until a man stood in his place, a man in orange kimono, nine tails swayed lazily behind him.

"Sasuke…" The man whispered, tears in his eyes.. In split second, Sasuke had the man in his arms, staring down at teary azure eyes, that put diamonds and jewels to shame. "It really is you… I have been searching… for so long."

"And I have been waiting for so long. Let me taste you, Naruto. I have waited centuries for you…"

Naruto bit his lips but bared his neck just the same— the same they had done throughout the centuries.

"I'm not human anymore Sasuke… can you still love someone like me?" Naruto asked shyly.

"Stupid. I loved you throughout centuries, dobe. Knight, monk, geisha, or demon. You are mine. ALL MINE." And Sasuke sunk his teeth into smooth tanned skin.

And thus two lovers long separated by fate finally reunited.

Many thought they knew the legend of Kyuubi no Kitsune. Many believed he was born a demon, and born evil. But he was simply human. Ripped from his beloved for far too long, his long standing wish has finally come to pass.
