A/N Hi everyone! This is our first book, so please go easy on us. Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated. It's a great way for us to improve as writers. (Btw, there's two of us, we write and edit this story together:) English is not our first language, so if there are any grammatical errors feel free to let us know in the comments.
You will understand the story better, if you have seen the movies, but if you haven't you're still welcomed. We highly recommend the movies, also there are multiple series that happen between the first two movies than are also great, and a lot of fun to watch. This will happen in the time frame between the first and second movie (Hiccup is 18 years old).
We DON'T OWN THE OG HTTYD CHARACTERS! The characters belong to Cressida Cowell and DreamWorks. We only own the OC, who you will meet going further into the story and the plot.
This is the flashback chapter. We hope you enjoy it!

For centuries, vikings of Berk have fought and hunted dragons, who raided their village. It was, simply said, a nightmare. The dragons that attacked were massive, relentless and didn't get tied down easily.
Berk was a land of kill or be killed. The vikings were strong, determined, hardheaded and a bunch of stubborn-ass people. They were vikings. It's an occupational hazard, they said. If we don't kill them, they will kill us, they said. But not everybody was like that. Some people protected dragons. They believed good existed in them. Well, nobody thought that. Everyone has lost family, friends, people they loved and that was enough to spark a lifelong taste for revenge. But there was one individual in particular that stood out.
Her name was Valka. She was the chief's wife and she was different. She always tried to stop the bloodshed but the vikings thought it was a very unpopular opinion and due to the obvious democracy in the viking leadership, wasn't correct. Valka had just given birth to a child named Hiccup. A hideous name, like Hiccup, was a legend all vikings believed and it stated that bad names warded off gnomes and trolls. A beautiful boy with emerald green eyes and copper brown hair with a little of Haddock red, with a beautiful round baby head and that baby smell - the successor of the chief, who wore diapers, would one day achieve greatness. Hiccup was going to be a legend of all vikings. Nothing could have prepared them for the future. Absolutely nothing could.
One night, the dragons once again attacked and the vikings fought bravely, killing as many dragons as it took. Of course, Valka was there defending her beliefs and fighting for what she thought was right. In her eyes, they were innocent creatures that defended and provided. Although she didn't know why exactly the dragons attacked as they did, she truly believed, nay, knew, that they didn't mean to be lethal, fire-breathing, killing machines.
But then, one night, a particularly big lethal, fire-breathing, killing machine, broke into the Haddock household. Nobody was home, thank god! Oh no, but that means… Instantly, the house was flooded with angry red fire and Valka rushed to protect Hiccup. Her one and only son and future pride of Berk was in serious danger and she had to save him.
Apparently, her work was for nothing. If Hiccup would get hurt or worse, she would be the one to blame, since instead of being in the house to care for her child, she was out trying to stop the war.
But when she came onto the scene, the dragon wasn't hurting her son. They were… playing? How was this possible? After all those years of everyone being so sure, she thought, now the dragon was friendly and a big ol' softie, as it seemed . What she saw was proof of everything she believed. It wasn't a vicious beast but an intelligent and gentle creature.
It was startled by Valka and it gave Hiccup a little cut on his chin, when it swayed and moved closer to her, slowly staring her down. The look in its eyes was so… …understanding and they gazed on, as she saw her soul reflecting in its eyes. She did not know the species of the dragon. She took a better look at the beautiful being in front of her.
It seemed like an eternity when its big yellow eyes stared into hers. It was exhilarating watching a misunderstood beast, with gorgeous cream brown scales, gaze into her shimmering eyes. Finally, she thought, everyone was going to understand that things could change for the better. Berk was going to be a land of peace, and an example to all vikings.
But, suddenly, a raveging ax was thrown, cutting off their eye contact. It was the chief, Valka's raging husband. In a moment, everything Valka could have hoped for was gone. She quickly pleaded to her husband not to hurt the dragon, for it was only an innocent being who's kind was wiped out by no other than themselves. Of course, Stoick wouldn't listen.
If there wasn't something more important than slaughtering a dragon, he would immediately have bound for his ax. Now instead, he abruptly leapt over the fire and grabbed Hiccup. As that grasp tightened, he turned around, but it was too late. Valka was being violently dragged off, by the dragon that almost instantaneously destroyed their home. Stoick was absolutely furious, but he knew that there was nothing he could do.
For a long time, Stoick seemed absent in his mind, like he would still hear Valka scream his name and it echoed in his head. Everyone heard stories and whispers of the incident, but nobody ever got up the nerve to ask. A few years passed and Stoick once again became the strong and mighty chief of Berk, Stoick the vast chief of the tribe but Valka was never retrieved. Her endless screams would forever echo in his head as he raised his son the only way he knew how.
