Meet Hiccup
This is Hiccup; a fairly lean teenager just off the coast of 18 years, with dark copper brown hair, that barely changed since he was a baby. And magical emerald green eyes, just like his mother's.
Three years have passed since he proved his beloved mother right, about how dragons are beautiful, gentle, trustworthy creatures, as long as everyone treats them that way. His life also changed big-time, when he saved his village from total and absolute destruction. It all changed for the better.
He was standing in his forge, though he didn't work there anymore, and thought about that night, that his father used to tell him as a bedtime story, when Valka died.
He thought about what Stoick told him she always said:"Life can knock you down or beat you up. That's never gonna change. But what you do about it is important. You can sit and cry in the corner, weeping and hoping it will one day change, or you can get up and show life, that you will take it all, that you will fall down again and again, but you're gonna try to make this a better place to live or end your days trying."
And she did end her days trying, Hiccup thought. She was so great and amazing, fighting for everything she believed, never backing down. And yet, now she's gone. He's never gonna see her again. Not that he knew her, anyway. But still, his thoughts flew, But still, he misses her like he did.
And he couldn't even begin to think why his own father would traumatize him from such a young age and tell him how his mother died. Even now he still has a sour relationship with his dad.
They don't talk much, they've never said I love you, his dad even only told him he's proud of him once, and that was only because Hiccup was the person he wanted him to be; the savior. He wasn't proud of him, he was proud of what he became. If that had never happened, if he hadn't saved them, Stoick would never have been proud of him.
Things were better since Hiccup saved the village, but he knew his father would never really be proud of the little boy, who tried so hard to be one of them but was a little different.
Even with all these awful thoughts that invaded his mind every day, Hiccup accepted his life for what it was. There was nothing missing from it. Well, except his mom.
Otherwise, he had everything: friends, a specific animal friend, a home and half of his parents. His sad, pathetic life that he had before Toothless came into his life, turned to a slightly less pathetic life.
Anyways, he's happy with what he has, because he learned that this was probably as good as it's gonna get. He tried to organize a "save the endangered dragons" club, that did not go well.
The only people that signed up were the twins and it was an absolute disaster, because they thought it was an "endanger the dragons" club.
After that an "explore beyond the archipelago" club that nobody signed up for. He tried to explore beyond by himself, but he only got a little while away from Berk until he realized he had no food, water, map or plan as to where to sleep or where to go.
So, he wanted to go home but allegedly got lost because he was stupid enough to fall asleep while on dragon-back. Luckily or unluckily, you decide, Toothless woke him up right before he actually slid of his back and fell into the ocean. Hiccup would never hear the end of it.
One winter night, he lay in his bed, peaceful and free of the burdens of the day. Suddenly, a paw found itself right on his face and even though his eyes were closed, there was little wonder of who that could be. With a weak hand he pulled it off and was greeted by two big expecting eyes, staring at him.
"Toothless, it's midnight and I barely slept last night. We can't go flying," Hiccup complained. The dragon only let out a pleading gurgle of hope and jumped on the little windowsill, still staring him down.
He gave in and said: "Fine, but only a short one. We've got a long day tomorrow." And, boy, was he right. The very next day, they had to lead some sort of peace treaty shit and would have to be at full alert for anything that might happen.
Hiccup struggled, but he got out of bed and climbed onto Toothless. They took off with a swish and before anyone could have noticed, they were in the night sky.
It was such a beautiful night for a fly, Hiccup had to admit:"You really know the right time to wake me up, huh, bud?" The only sound they could hear now was the soft air moving around them and the almost non existing sound of them breathing and the very little clouds that decorated the night sky, stood on the edge of being almost transparent.
Abruptly, Toothless' ears shot up and his eyes narrowed. There was someone there.
It took him a while, but finally, Hiccup realized that someone who wasn't a Berkian, was flying a dragon. Their swift and effortless gliding made him feel as if maybe there was a mirror right there and he couldn't find a point of the dragon or the rider to follow, because every time he focused on one, it just appeared on the other side of Toothless.
From what he could see, which wasn't much, the dragon was sharp class but not like any he had seen before. Its bright scales, reflecting the moon's rays of cold blue light, made it almost impossible to hide very well but obviously, the rider knew a way to get past that. All of a sudden, something jabbed their saddle and Hiccup could feel it sliding off, slowly taking him with it.
As soon as Toothless noticed the sudden different distribution of weight along his back, he swerved to keep Hiccup balanced but something sharp was tearing the saddle apart and they couldn't fly without it.
He tried pulling the sharp object out of the only thing keeping them in the sky and when that didn't work, he resorted to less likely methods.
"We come in peace!" no answer. "Please, we can't fly without the saddle! He'll drown!" still nothing. They thought it was over, when suddenly the pulling stopped.
The sharp object retracted and the mysterious rider and their dragon disappeared. Hiccup could swear he saw a lock of long bronze hair and a girl's face in the darkness right before he saw nothing at all.
He woke up on the back of Stormfly with a throbbing pain in the back of his head. His first and only thought was-where was Toothless, which was immediately followed by the answer, that he was being carried by Hookfang.
His eyes were closed and he was hanging lifeless in the monstrous nightmare's claws and that made Hiccup terrified.
"He's fine," he heard a voice say, although his consciousness hadn't yet fully returned so it was very hard to pinpoint the direction from which it came. Looking around, he realized there was only one person with a voice so soft when it spoke to him.
"How do you know?" he asked her. And only one girl whose voice turned so sharp and distant in an instant.
"We checked, of course! You didn't think we would just let him die, did you?" she bellowed down on him. He knew she was trying to act tough but even with his blurry vision, he could see the smile of relief on her face.
He struggled getting up but it was worth it when he reached his girlfriend's warm embrace and a soft kiss on the lips, followed by an enormous hug.
"I was so worried," she told him, with a sigh of calmness. Her hair still smelled like cherry blossoms and her long braid was messier than ever:
"You didn't have to be, Astrid." The hug was broken and she pushed his shoulders at arms length, looking at him in slight disbelief and very little pity.
"What happened?" he wondered, looking around at the other dragon riders. None of them seemed to be speaking. They looked exhausted.
"Well, we found you on a small island in the middle of nowhere after the storm had passed. You were passed out in Toothless' wings so we knew something had happened but we couldn't find anyone in the vicinity. Your dad called us in for a meeting when he couldn't find you in the morning." she answered.
"I was flying with Toothless," he explained.
"We know. Your dad said he heard you take off in the middle of the night, but apparently you do that often, so he didn't mind. He did say that you have never been out that long before, so he was worried." At the sound of talking in the distance, everyone else turned around on their dragons and Hiccup couldn't remember the last time he saw so many relieved faces. They flew in closer.
"Thank Thor you're OK!" cried Fishlegs and came in so close that Meatlug and Stormfly were getting a little aggressive.
"OK, OK Fishlegs. I'm fine," Hiccup added, pushing them apart and getting slightly dizzy while doing so. Astrid pulled Hiccup up by the shoulder, as to say that he should be more careful and take it easy and he gladly returned back to her side.
For a little while, everyone talked over each other, saying how glad they were that he was OK and telling him how they rescued him while Astrid waited patiently for them to stop bickering, so that she could ask Hiccup the roaring question no one asked.
"What happened to you?" she finally got out, almost having to throw her ax between the twins to end their endless fighting. Hiccup explained how Toothless woke him up, how they went flying and everything was perfect until another dragon rider tried to dismount him off Toothless and how she eventually gave up.
"but apparently, her dragon gave me a sharp blow on the head, and…" he was interrupted by a somewhat worried laugh. Everyone looked at Astrid. "I'm sorry. I just thought you said `her´ for a second there," she got out, laughing a little bit like a maniac would.
"I did say `her´, because it was a `her´. I saw her face right before she slammed into me," Hiccup said, looking at her as if she was about to explode. All Astrid let out was an "Oh", before she turned back to her Nadder's head and stoppen showing any kind of emotion.
