The storm has moved in, casting its loud thunder upon them while they flew directly above the navy blue ocean.
Hiccup's tired mind was replaying their argument over and over again. His mind flew over all the possible endings to their discussion. Screaming match, sensible compromise, adult disagreement, and so on.
What happened was none of the above. Actually, it might have been a little more screaming match than Hiccup wanted to admit.
"It wasn't my fault! He and his delusional mind escalated everything," he ranted, while laying his back onto Toothless'.
The dragon's disapproving glance enraged him. "Don't look at me like that. All I'm saying is that it wasn't ALL my fault. Especially the screaming," he proceeded to pout like the fussy teenage boy he is.
Despite all his maturity, hormones are present in all of us and Hiccup has always known that. He can't control his short patience or lack thereof.
He always has to light the fuse, doesn't he? Hiccup asked himself. It's been so long up in the air and eventually, his mind will start to think about science and inventions and dragons etc.
The feeling of lying in bed was a little too convincing, especially for his exhausted mind. His vision was getting blurry and everything was out of focus. He was tired. It's been hours since they've left and the angry storm has been following them closely, almost catching on to Toothless' drowsy maneuvering.
Strong gusts of wind helped them stay in the air as long as they have but the sky was beginning to dim and the lightning was getting brighter.
"Come on, bud. We just have to wait it out." His words were slurred as he mumbled his encouragement.
Suddenly, Toothless began to descend. Slowly falling asleep, his wings were already touching the surface of the deadly water, waiting for them to give in to its powerful pull. Heavy droplets of water were starting to tumble from the sky.
The storm had caught them. Hiccup rubbed the side of Toothless' head to wake him up just enough so they didn't fall into the swallowing waves. They struggled to get back in the air and not get hit by the electrifying lightning.
"Up Toothless! Let's get above the clouds!" Hiccup shouted, making sure not to fall off as they swerved from side to side.
They attempted to get above the stormy clouds but the lightning threatened their exposed metal extensions. Hiccup's leg was almost hit and Toothless' tale was slightly smoky, but they were in the air.
They weren't diving headfirst into the almost tsunami-like waves, which is always a good thing. As long as the tail held up, they were being held up. But despite Hiccup's optimism of waiting it out, it was getting impossible.
No light in sight, besides the electric streaks weighing down the clouds. He couldn't see Toothless' head anymore, despite it being right in front of him and him grasping it. As he leaned forward and toward his companion's head, Toothless' ears shot up and his head moved swiftly from side to side.
"What is it, bud?" Hiccup wondered while staring straight ahead.
"Down there!" He shouted. "Toothless, multiple blasts!" he ordered. Shortly after, a series of purple blasts illuminated the black sky and bounced off a nearby island. It gave Hiccup a good enough view of the island that he noticed a big cloud of smoke coming out from a cave on the far side of it.
They ventured for the entrance but when they started their slow descent, a white flash of light hit Toothless' tail which lit on fire, scattering mini flames into the water below.
The dragon let out a loud roar and Hiccup started screaming, as they tumbled further and further downward and away from the opening. Hiccup desperately held onto his saddle as he scanned the island for nearer caves. There was one lower than them but just barely holding on to the cliff edge.
He hoped it would lead to a tunnel which in turn led somewhere safer than what was visible. So he pointed and screamed for Toothless to see it just in time and straighten his flapping wings.
They dived for the hole and barely made it, scraping the bottom of the stone floor. They landed, halfway hanging from the cliff. As they let their breathing calm down and their heart rates slow, the faithful dragon unwrapped its wings, revealing Hiccup safe inside his giant embrace.
He stood up as Toothless shook his head, almost to get rid of the experience they just shared.
"Whooooohoo!" Hiccup rejoiced in their survival as the edge of the cave entry fell into the angry waves below. That brought the joyful boy back to reality. His face dropped and
Toothless grumbled happily, making fun of Hiccup's sudden realization. "Oh, shut up," he mumbled, dismissing the dragon's playfulness and returning back to absolute worry.
What were they gonna do now? Just walk and hope the cave doesn't, well, cave in or fall into the dark unwelcoming waves. That's really all they could do at this point. Toothless was licking his paws or whatever you could call them, and Hiccup started walking towards the opening of the cave.
He stared down at the tumbling water and then up at the dark cold sky that almost took their lives. With that Hiccupy determination in his eyes, he turned around and started walking in the opposite direction.
It was completely dark and Toothless was worried, as you could tell by his gurgles from behind Hiccup but the boy wasn't. His head was high and his body tall as he walked into the darkness of the unknown.
Soon his determined expression turned into a face of disappointment as his foot hit the end of the cave. Toothless didn't even have to move to see there was no hope of getting anywhere that way.
"Okay, bud. I guess we should get ready for a long night," Hiccup mumbled, disappointed.
Hours later, the pile of pebbles and little feather were no longer entertaining for the adolescent dragon and drawing on the wall with a rock was no longer possible for Hiccup. Even he couldn't believe he'd covered the entire surface of the cave walls with plans and drawings, as well as counting of minutes and hours they'd spent in the cave.
For every hour, he would draw 60 lines to count minutes. Really he had no idea how long it had been but when he managed to see a glimpse of the moon some time earlier, his chances of guessing became slightly better.
Now he's had enough, getting up and walking back to the entrance looking from side to side. He noticed a promising looking cave a little down to the left and he signaled Toothless to come and as he was getting onto the stubborn dragon, his grumble said it all.
"We'll be fine bud. We just have to be quick." The tail was fried but the cave wasn't far and with the help of a little wid, Hiccup knew they could make it.
So he chose the right moment, when the wing changed the direction of the rain and they took off for the cave. It was rough but they made it inside and without hesitation they ran towards the darkness.
A moment later, Toothless was looking around for his rider and found him on the ground. He tripped on something and as he got up, he was holding a piece of burned wood. It looked used but it was cold so it couldn't have been used in the past day.
He held it up and the dragon made a flame. It was weak but the wood was burnt so that was to be expected. They continued walking and to their surprise, it looked like the cave led into a series of tunnels.
Toothless chose the right path and his companion followed. But it seemed like their path came to an early end. Hiccup's intrigue quickly rose when he saw a tiny hole and a light, warm like a fire's flame.
