SASV Normandy SR-1, "Not Quite" Eden Prime
Nihlus skirted around two large trees grown awkwardly wide and flat in the forest, scanning for any secrets the light coverage may or may not cover up from sight. Ending his search he suddenly discerned what did not belong—about twenty yards from his position, a drone distracted seemingly by its turn of aim to something nearby it on the ground.
What's it looking at, he thought, separating his rifle sight from his eye—before raising the rifle again, stroking the trigger without a second more.
Nearby the drone—as it fell with its minor fizzling explosion from his bullet—a violent series of louder explosions ensued, coincidentally the exact moment Nihlus made his hit…At first he gaped confused, maxillae pressing against the interior of his helmet with sudden surprise.
Nihlus enjoyed no time finding out—he had to duck behind the sprawling tree to avoid a pair of Geth Hunters entering the wood then and bearing cannons in their grips, their red armor singed and smoking from whatever they had been burnt by…His quickness to conceal himself permitted his miss of the white armored figure that shot across the path of both Hunters—while they were distracted by finding one of their drones on the ground…Nihlus's contribution, of course.
There is another heartbeat…
Braith's power, heightened and sensing outward, informed her Nihlus, Kaidan, and Jenkins were accounted for…Kaidan's biotic signature was easy to recognize, left behind to guard Jenkins as she vaulted root and shrub through the woods in search of Nihlus…
But as she would learn he was in concealment for his safety, she detected the presence of another heartbeat—not his own…Her power warned, too, of a greater threat lurking in the woods with them.
She may possibly be hindered by the forest for the trees from finding all separate entities…To protect the Spectre as well as a possible survivor who could tell them what was happening this day on Eden Prime, Braith drew out her pistol in exchange of her rifle, which condensed to hook onto her upper shoulders with the Geth missile launcher on her lower back…Firing one shot into the canopy, she hoped to draw attention to her person and off Nihlus, plus whoever else might be in danger.
One and the other of the hunters had turned their optics toward each other, processing the report of the gunshot…Leaving their current location—where they had been seeking the hidden white armored figure among the rocks and shrubs not more than ten yards from Nihlus's tree, they made a line for the origin of Braith's gunfire. Collecting themselves swiftly, the hunters moved in on her location with a frightening and purposeful stride through the brush, dividing to flank her.
Reeling left to the sooner arriving Geth, Braith pulled out the missile launcher—a flourishing spin, well practiced with heavy weapons that utilized the arcing momentum of weight transfers from out her holster clips—she caught it in her left gauntlet and cocked it upwards, achieving an elegant angle, deadly focused on the lights coming round the trunk of the tree…She corrected her aim toward the breastplates of the hunter as it noticed her and the smaller shields over its sight lens flared wider with a noise equivalent to a computer's shriek.
"Hi," she heaved on the trigger, gritting her teeth at the force required to pop out the missile—and freed quite the punch into the center of the geth's chest, hoping and praying a little that Nihlus and the other missing stranger were nowhere near the explosion. The missile towed two incidentally—"Damn!"—Braith made sure to take her hand off the happy trigger…The hunter's chest was dented, ripped open into shrapnel twists and charred acrid fluid spurting and melting onto metal and plastic…The geth was knocked smoothly off its legs and flung a solid three yards away—passing the second geth whose shields had been dropped to zero percent by the closeness of the missile explosions…and yet it advanced on Braith still. Unshielded as well as non-deterred, the remaining hunter lowered its cannon at Braith's middle, preparing to kill her.
Precisely when Braith's power was ready to release into the hunter, a white shrieking pall of violence and omni-blade flung itself into the back of the geth, toppling it with the weight and drive of the ferocious collision to the geth's knees…The synthetic buckled and tried to pull the blade out of its back but its assailant clung to the armor and cleaved the blade downward to the chest…Sparks bled out like synthetic blood ranging through the air in arcs of pretty white dazzlers…Braith's power recoiled slightly, telling her that this was the other she had sensed aside from Nihlus and, apparently, the geth hunters. The armored ivory figure screamed furiously—unintelligibly Braith would go so far to say since her relay transformer had a hard time deciphering what should have been Human…She took a step back from the figure just in case her wrath should turn her way.
"Fucking—piece—synth—hole—" Ashley Williams drove her weapon inside and out of the geth, cleaving its arms off with final swats of her fabricated blade…Spite drove her on to decapitate the head from its shoulders, and finally, bathed in the hunter's fluids still spitting up at her heavy armor thigh pads, she stopped to catch her breath, chest and shoulders heaving. "God damn it!" she permitted as a followup shout…She had been so close to a justifiable death, taking as many of the bastards with her in revenge for her squadmates' murders…
An honorable death might have been within reach—had that drone not spooked the geth into tripping her mines early, missing the others by a mile…Now she would need to find more, and that would mean dealing with whomever had interfered with her plans…She whirled her focus to the woman. No losses…No more losses, she thought, simultaneously taking in the sight of Alliance armor—navy blue on gray and silver stripes, gold stars below the logo of the apex systems design, "…Can't let them…get away with it," she panted quietly.
