At the end of the proverbial day, no one still quite knew what had happened. There were theories of course, but most of them couldn't be proven in any shape or form. Some said it was the result of a random accident in the cosmos or the multiverse that brought them all together, but due to the astronomical coincidence this would mean, this wasn't a popular theory.
A theory more widely accepted was of a cosmic or multiversal being who decided to play god one lazy afternoon, and meshed all these realities together.
However the Mega City was created, it didn't really matter in the long run. The city's denizens were stuck with each other, and that was that.
So what exactly is the Mega City? Well, it's hard to put together into one cohesive story; it would be better if it was told in a series of interconnected vignettes.
Our first vignette starts on what everyone thought would be a normal day in New York City… or, as typical as days got on Earth-616…
"WHOOOOO-HOOOOO!"
The shout echoed throughout the crowded streets of New York, as the sound reverberated in between the massive skyscrapers. Most people down on the streets didn't hear the shout, due to the wall-to-wall traffic causing noise disturbance, but several did still see the figure swinging through the air, a string of white fluid grasped firmly in hand. They all cheered and whooped as he swung past.
This was Peter B. Parker, better known to the vast majority of New York City as the amazing Spider-Man. Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego had been one of the city's most steadfast protectors since he had been bitten by a radioactive spider and been imbued with the strength and stamina of a spider. Now, Peter effortlessly (at the moment, at least) juggled his teenage life with his superhero life.
Peter smirked under the red mask he was wearing. Well, soon to be ex-teenager.
Peter's time in high school was nearing it's end, with graduation being planned in three months. Peter couldn't wait to finish school, and move on to bigger projects: going to college (preferably one near or in the city), moving out of his Aunt May's place, and, hopefully, finally asking his long-time girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson, to marry him.
He sighed to himself, as he finally came to a stop on top of a water tower somewhere in the city. He sat down, looking out over his beloved city. He knew everything there was to know about the layout of this city, knew every sweet spot on each building to swing from. He could just make out the Baxter Building where the Fantastic Four made their headquarters in the near distance.
And yet… he may know the distances from each building to the next, but he still couldn't figure out the deep recesses of his heart, soul, and mind. Was he really ready to commit to a marriage with his long-time girlfriend? On top of all that, was he ready for what would come next?
He'd had to tell her about his super alter-ego, it just wouldn't be a feasible marriage without doing so. And yet… if he did, that could open up a whole can of worms. Would she be ready to be married to Spider-Man and all his responsibilities? Would she reject him outright for all the lying he had previously done?
And yet…
Peter groaned in exasperation. He was getting really tired of the words 'and yet'. The truth was he did love Mary Jane, with all his heart, but he didn't want to hurt her. He got out of his crouched position on the tower, and flopped onto the curved lid, staring up at the sky. Why did being Spider-Man have to be so complex?
It was as he was wondering (not for the first time) whether any other superhero on Earth had to go through all this, when a tingle shivered up his back. He knew this tingle all to well; his Spidey-Sense, the extrasensory capabilities granted to him by the spider-bite that alerted him to any danger immediately present.
Peter immediately went into an attack position, looking for the danger. But there was nothing; not any one of his villains coming at him, nor a helicopter crashing towards him. It was for once totally peaceful.
The tingle wasn't going away, however, as it kept getting stronger, causing his entire body to begin spasming. Peter groaned in discomfort, falling to his knees. And then it stopped…
Peter cautiously got to his feet, looking up into the sky. His eyes just grazed the sun's current position in the blue sky when the universe exploded. Peter fell back to his knees, covering his ears, as a cacophony of sound erupted from, well, everywhere. Everything from intermittent whispers to the grinding of the cosmos punctured his eardrums.
After a full minute of this, the noise began to slowly die away. Peter, still breathing heavily, got up groggily to his feet. He stumbled for a moment, then got to a full standing position. He opened his eyes, and was again dazed by the sight of a bright light slowly dissipating from all around him. He squinted his eyes at the still very bright light, trying and failing to determine its source.
The light soon vanished completely, and Peter was now staring (probably quite dumbly) at the skyscraper right in front of the water tower. Peter breathed in and out, trying to steady himself.
This turned out to be very hard to do in the next few seconds, as a flying car flew past the tower. Using his heightened senses, Peter glimpsed two… creatures in the driver and passenger's seat of the vehicle. They were quite clearly alien, with snouts, grey skin, and apparently using their feet to drive the car.
That was all his glimpsed, before the car careened past him. Peter looked past the skyscraper in front of him to see a city. Not New York, though he did see many buildings and monuments he recognized.
This city, however, was vast. From every way he turned, he could see building after building, road after road, statue after statue; all of it crammed together like a hodge-podge made up of every city in the universe. He saw more flying cars (as well as a few zeppelins here and there), roads filled with normal cars (some of whom from many years in the past), and, off to the distance, what Peter swore was a giant robot walking around perfectly normally.
Peter could see an ocean stretching off to the distance a few miles away, and in the center of this view? A green statue… the Statue of Liberty! As the nearest landmark that he knew of, Peter made it his mission to reach that statue.
Peter spurt out a string of web, and swinging into the sky… promptly hitting a large flying car that was ascending into the sky. This car was a more boxy version of the sleeker kind that Peter had previously seen. Inside the car, Peter could just make out a cat person dressed in an aviator's cap and jacket, two normal looking women, and a man with a pinstripe suit and leather jacket, with admittedly great hair.
"Sorry.", said Peter's reply, though he had no way to know if they had heard him. Peter shot another web filament, dashing away. He swung from one anachronistic building to another, before finally stopping at a floating, electronic billboard straight out of Blade Runner. The billboard, apparently cycling through different advertisements, came to an image of an old man in flowing red robes surrounded by soldiers in odd, white armor.
"Only you can help these troopers push back the droid horde of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.", said the old man. "Please vote in the incoming election to increase military…" The message cut out, the billboard apparently going cold.
Peter continued to swing towards the bay, gaining more and more speed. He could hear shouts from a few people, but not much, due to the constant noise of the city. In one instant, something grazed Peters foot, causing pain and blood to issue forth. Peter knew what it felt like to be grazed by a bullet, and that was it.
Finally, he was near enough to the bay to take a breather. He looked out to see the green statue, partially hidden by buildings. There was something… different about it, something not quite right that he hadn't noticed before. As he squinted his eyes at it, his spider-sense tingled. He looked around the stone building he was crouched on, realizing that it was made of red stone. He looked up to see a young boy in a medieval outfit looking down from a battlement.
He was on some sort of castle straight out of the Middle Ages. Flags all around the turrets showed a dragon with three heads shooting fire out of each mouth.
Peter held up a finger to his mouth at the boy, but it was in vain. The boy shouted, pointing down at the weird man in red and blue clothing stuck to the wall of the castle. Soon, men dressed in medieval armor were glaring down at him, pointing crossbows.
Peter was about to swing away, when a whomph-whomph-whomph pounding interrupted them. And then, things got weirder…
A dragon, a real live dragon rose from behind the castle into the air. Seeing his exit, Peter shot web at the dragon's feet, and was soon rocketed in the air. If he had looked up, he would've seen a man with silver hair and lilac eyes glare down at him, in shock and anger, but Peter eyes were directed towards the statue, which was rapidly approaching.
Just as the silver haired man directed his dragon to snap at Peter, they were over the water. Peter let go, just as the dragon's teeth closed in around the spot he had been. Peter dropped towards the green statue, shooting a branch of web at it to slow his fall. He landed on the ground, harder than he had anticipated, then got shakily to his feet.
This was not the statue of liberty. This was a statue of what looked like a young, bald monk with an arrow tatooed to his head. Peter grunted in frustration, as he turned to see the city in it was he could assume was its (almost) entirety.
And that's the first chapter! As you may have guessed, this a story where numerous different cities are transported and meshed together into one mega-city in some sort of other dimension. This story will mostly follow Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, from a version of the Marvel comics universe that's sort of a hodge-podge of other versions, such as the MCU and the mainline comics.
However, don't despair, as other characters transported into the Mega City will give their two-cents about the situation as well.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this story, and make sure to favorite and follow it, as well as leave tons of reviews and shares with your friends!
