Normal Saturday with My Completely Normal Friend

Chapter 6

It was already afternoon when Nate and others stepped out of Eddie's house.

After descending the stairs, Enma turned towards Eddie who was standing at the door. "It was nice to get know you. Thank you for today," he stated with a smile.

"Same," Eddie replied in a good mood.

Nate and others said goodbye to Eddie and then they started walking towards te Uptown Springdale while Eddie went back inside.

The walk went quickly while chatting and soon the children and the yo-kai had arrived at Katie's house. Katie waved to the boys with a smile before hurrying her home.

As they were reaching Nate's home, Nate stopped briefly when he noticed that his father had just arrived in their yard with a Everymart plastic bag in his hand.

"Hey, dad!" Nate exclaimed as he quickened his steps, Bear and the yo-kai following his example.

Nate's voice made Mr. Adams stop and turn to face them.

"There you are, Nathan," Mr. Adams stated as his son and his friends stopped in front of him. "Did you have fun?"

"Yes, we did," Nate replied with a nod.

"That's good to hear," Mr. Adams said with a smile. Then he focused his attention on Enma. "I assume that this is the friend of yours you talked about to your mother and me earlier this week."

"Yeah. His name is Emmanuel," Nate confirmed before he turned to face Enma. "Emmanuel, this is my dad."

Enma walked to Mr. Adams and stretched out his hand with a polite smile. "Good afternoon, Mr. Adams. My name is Emmanuel Underwood. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Mr. Adams studied Enma with a pondering gaze for a couple of seconds before he grabbed the outstretched hand and shook it with a smile. "Likewise, Emmanuel."

"I think I should go now," Bear announced to others and asked then from Enma: "Are you going to a train station in Blossom Heights or are you using a train at Central Station to get San Fantastico?"

Mr. Adams frowned. "The last train of the day to San Fantastico has already left," he noted.

"Oh no!" Bear exclaimed as he turned his attention back at Enma with a guilty expression. "I'm sorry, Emmanuel… If we had known-"

"You don't have to apologize anything. I'll just call a taxi to take me home," Enma assured as he waved his hand calmly.

"Woah, you can take the taxi ride by yourself? That sounds so adult-like," Bear marveled, his eyebrows raised.

"But do you have enough money for the taxi?" Mr. Adams asked with slightly worried expression.

"Yes, I have," Enma replied casually. "I always have extra money for situation like this."

Nate, Whisper and Jibanyan had listened the conversation quietly.

"Lord Enma seems to have an answer for every situation," Nate noted to two other yo-kai who nodded in agreement.

"Well, good to know that you have a ride home. I got to go now," Bear stated. "I'll see you later, Nate."

"Yeah," Nate replied with a smile.

"It was nice to meet you, Emmanuel," Bear said cheerfully to Enma.

"Same here," Enma replied good-naturedly.

With these words Bear continued forward in the direction of Blossom Heights.

Mr. Adams turned his attention back at Enma. "Are you sure it's good idea to you to go by taxi? If you want, I can take you back to your home," he offered.

"No, no. You definitely don't have to," Enma replied calmly, shaking his head slightly. "I'm grateful for the offer but I'm sure that you have had a busy day at work today and I don't want to burden you by driving me to San Fantastico."

"Especially since Lord Enma doesn't actually live there," Jibanyan commented to Nate and Whisper.

"Are you sure? Won't your parents get worried if you aren't home yet?" Mr. Adams asked, frowning.

"My parents know that I won't do anything stupid and I have taken the taxi many times before. Besides they are currently working abroad," Enma lied.

"Well, if you say so," Mr. Adams said, not looking completely convinced. "Let's go inside now. I'm sure that the dinner is already ready."

Nate and Enma nodded and walked towards the door of the Adams' house with Mr. Adams, Whisper and Jibanyan.

"No way! Did you really draw on your grandfather's important papers when you were little?" Nate asked with wide eyes.

Enma, who was sitting next to him on the sofa, grinned.

After the dinner and Enma pretending to call the taxi on his phone Nate and Enma had decided to play a video game in the living room. However, the game was paused when one character's line about folding a sheet of homework paper into an airplane had reminded Enma about the certain experience from his childhood, of which he told a modified version to Nate, Whisper and Jibanyan because Nate's parents were in the kitchen and looking in the boys' direction.

"I was just trying to find paper to draw on and I had noticed how much paper my grandfather had on his table, so I decided to use them," Enma explained casually.

Whisper, who was sitting with Jibanyan on the sofa's back, shook his head slightly. "I assume that the previous Lord Enma wasn't happy after finding out about that," he noted in a disapproving tone.

"I hope your grandfather didn't get too mad at you," Nate said with a slight smile.

"Well, I was scolded after that but I didn't get any worse punishment since I had drawn on the blank side of the papers," Enma told while shrugging. "But after that the door of my grandfather's work room was always locked when he wasn't there."

"What a surprise," Nate commented in a teasingly sarcastical tone, earning a playful nudge from the yo-kai king, before they continued playing the game.

"I hope you had a good day with my friends today. My friends definitely had a good time with you," Nate noted.

"Your friends were really nice. They seemed to be a little wary of me at first but we got along quickly. I really enjoyed my time with them," Enma replied while he made his character to open a wooden chest and receive a hammer. "It was also nice to meet your other classmates."

"It seemed that my classmates really wanted to get to know you better," Nate commented as he remembered their meetings at the bookstore and in the library while his character defeated a approaching mushroom enemy. Then he fell silent with an hesitant expression. "Should I ask if there's any girl who caught his attention? No… That would be so embarrassing. But what if he's interested in Katie?! Katie called him ordinary but what if Lord Enma manages to change her opinion about him so that Katie falls for him? What could I do then?!"

"What's wrong, Nate? You have a suffering expression. Does your stomach hurt or something?" Whisper asked worriedly.

"What's wrong, Nathan? You seem unwell. Does your stomach hurt or something?" Mrs. Adams asked worriedly.

"Huh? Uum…" Nate stammered, his eyes widened slightly in surprise due to his mother and Whisper asking the same question. "It's nothing! I'm just… tired, that's all," he lied.

"I'm sure you children had a busy day today," Mr. Adams noted from the kitchen table before focusing back on the newspaper.

A sound from the pocket of his shorts made Enma pause the game again and take out his phone. His eyebrows rose slightly as he checked his phone. "Seems like my taxi has arrived. It's waiting me outside," Enma told.

"Huh? You actually called a ride? I thought that you're just going to teleport back to the Yo-kai World?" Whisper wondered.

"In that case we shouldn't keep your ride waiting," Nate stated before ending their game and returning back to the title screen.

Both boys got up from the sofa and while Nate was putting his game console away, Enma turned his attention at Nate's parents.

"I want to thank you for your hospitality, Mr. And Mrs. Adams. The dinner was delicious and I'm happy that got to meet you," Enma thanked with a slight bow.

"We were happy to meet you too, Emmanuel," Mrs. Adams replied cheerfully. "I hope that you'll get home safely."

"I'm sure about that. I wish you a good continuation of the evening," Enma stated calmly as he returned her smile.

After saying this Enma turned and walked towards the entry with Nate. Whisper and Jibanyan got down from the back of the sofa and followed them.

Mr. and Mrs. Adams watched after the boys.

"What a nice boy. Emmanuel seemed rather wild at the first time but he's actually very polite and well-mannered," Mrs. Adams noted with a smile to her husband.

"Yes, you're right," Mr. Adams agreed.

As Enma stepped out the door, Nate and the yo-kai living with him stopped at the door. The trio's eyes widened slightly when they noticed a familiar yo-kai standing in fron of their yard.

"Oh, I didn't know that it was Zazel who was coming to get you," Nate said.

Zazel nodded curtly to Nate and his yo-kai companions.

"Before I leave," Enma said to Nate, "I want you to know that I'm not currently looking for a relationship, so you don't have to worry about me starting to date a girl from your class. Especially not Katie."

Nate flinched and took a step back with wide eyes, almost tripping over the threshold. "W-what are you talking about? I don't care if you start to date my classmate or not!" Nate yelped and then added without thinking: "And why did you mention Katie specifically?"

"Probably because he realized your feelings towards Katie," Jibanyan noted bluntly, causing Nate to turn his gaze at the nekomata. "He ordered Whisper and me follow him and he also sent Fidgephant to inspire Bear and Eddie at the Excellent Tower, so you and Katie would be left alonye."

"What?" Nate exclaimed before he turned his blushing face towards Enma. "It's nothing like that!" he claimed.

Enma snorted with a grin. "I haven't managed to stay on the throne by being stupid, Nate. I saw how you looked at Katie and behaved around her. You were like a lovesick puppy-"

"Hey!"

"Relax. I'm not going to spread this forward or anything," Enma promised, chuckling. When he saw Nate staring at him with displeased expression, Enma stifled his laughter completely. "I'm serious. Besides, I really hope that you two would be happy if you end up together someday."

Nate's eyes widened in surprise. "Really?"

Enma nodded.

Nate lowered his gaze awkwardly. "Thanks," he muttered.

"No problem," Enma replied benevolently. "And speaking of thanking, I want to thank you and your friends for spending such a entertaining and relaxing day with me. I don't usually have time to do normal things like this with my friends, so days like this mean a lot to me. So thank you. Thank you very much for today."

"Well, of course we're always ready to help the king of the Yo-kai World when he needs our help," Whisper announced as he puffed up his chest.

Nate glared at Whisper. "It isn't because of his position," he noted before he turned his gaze back at Enma and smiled at him. "We're friends, Enma. And friends are there to make life more fun," he said.

"I agree," Enma replied with a smile. "But I have to go now. See ya, Nate and others. Call me if you're in a tight spot!"

Nate, Whisper and Jibanyan waved their hands to the yo-kai king just before he turned away and ran towards Zazel. After reaching him, both yo-kai teleported away.

"You didn't have to come to get me. I told you that I'll be back in the evening," Enma, who had reverted back to his original form, reminded Zazel as they had returned back at the palace.

"I wanted to make sure that you hadn't lost your sense of time, Your Excellency," Zazel noted calmly as they walked down the hall.

"In other words you wanted to make sure that I won't make any detours," Enma thought to himself.

"Do you feel rested?" Zazel asked as they walked past two saluting guards to whom Enma nodded as a greeting. "Did you get rid of the fatigue caused by your work in the human world for now?"

Enma fell silent as his thoughts returned to the events of the day. He remembered the yo-kai book he found in the library, talking and eating with others, playing volleyball and videogames and meeting all those new humans. A smile rose on his face.

"Yes."

Like always, the weekend ended and on Monday morning Nate and his human friends (and Whisper) went to school.

As they entered their classroom, Nate and others noticed Alex, Shelly, Maya and Sarah gathered around Meg and talking about something.

"Good morning," Katie greeted them jovially as she joined them, causing the girls turn their attention in her direction.

"Good morning to you all," Alex greeted Katie and the boys in her usual cheerful way.

"Morning," Meg said before she walked over to Katie and lifted a piece of alloy shaped into the kanji for "star" on a black cord with her fingers. "What do you think of my new necklace? I bought it in Sparkopolis yesterday."

"Oh, it's so stylish," Katie praised with a smile. "It reminds me of Emmanuel's pendant."

"Yep. Emmanuel's pendant was so cool that I decided to buy a similar one," Meg explained proudly.

"Oh, him," Shelly gasped and lowered her gaze when others turned to look at her. "He was so scary looking."

"Emmanuel was nice," Alex stated as she smiled reassuringly at her classmate. "He was pretty good server in volleyball, although his shots tended to be too long. It was also nice just to talk with him."

"We too met him on Saturday," Sarah told. "Emmanuel listened very politely as Chelsea and I told him about the Excellent Tower."

"Oh, really?" Shelly asked, looking a little less nervous.

"Emmanuel is also pretty brave and composed," Katie informed, causing other girls to turn their attention back at her. "When we encountered a couple of hooligans in the game store, Emmanuel was calm all the time he confronted them."

"Woah. So cool," Maya, Meg and Sarah sighed as a faint blush rose on their face.

Nate, Whisper, Bear and Eddie listened their conversation quietly.

"I was actually expecting something like this," Eddie muttered to Nate and Bear.

"Same here…" Nate sighed as the boy trio headed with Whisper towards their desk.

After they had placed their school bags nex to their desk, Nate, Bear and Eddie began talking about a movie that had aired on television on Sunday. Just then Stephen approached them.

"Morning, Eddie, Nate and Bear," Stephen greeted them.

"Oh, good morning, Stephen," Nate replied.

Stephen held out a science magazine in his hand to Eddie. "The article I talked about to you last Friday is in this magazine, Eddie," he said. "It's my father's, so I expect you to return it in good condition after you have read it."

"Hey, thanks. I promise I'll be careful with it," Eddie promised as he took the magazine from Stephen.

"Morning, guys!" Andy greeted Nate and others after entering the classroom with Daniel and Mark, followed by Eric and Kenny. "Did you get any sleep after our yesterday investigation in that manor, Nate?"

"Yes, I did," Nate assured.

"What? Did you see something weird in that mansion?" Bear questioned as his gaze darted over Nate and Andy's group.

Eric and Kenny had headed towards their desks but when they heard the topic of their classmate's conversation they halted and turned back to face Nate and others. Eric seemed a little curious while Kenny had an nervous expression on his face.

"We didn't actually see anything," Mark replied, "but we definitely heard something."

"We heard footsteps in the hallway, the rattle of chains and even screaming a couple of times," Daniel told.

Bear's eyes widened. "So that place really is haunted!" he gasped.

"I don't think so," Eddie said as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Those sounds were probably consequences of perfectly reasonable things, such as wind or animals who became established in the manor."

"I agree," Stephen nodded.

Whisper and Nate exchanged glances.

"They don't have any idea that those sounds were caused by the yo-kai who wanted to have a little fun with the boys," Whisper stated to Nate who nodded.

Andy, Daniel and Mark stared at Eddie and Stephen discontentedly.

"Don't be such a joykillers," Andy huffed. "Besides, Nate's friend Emmanuel also detected something when he visited that place."

Eric's eyebrow rose slightly. "Is Emmanuel interested in ghosts? You know, that Emmanuel you were with last Saturday?" he asked from Nate and others.

"Yeah, same guy. Emmanuel bought a comic about a person in the spirit world and he claimed to Lina and Zoey that he had seen something he believed to be a yo-kai," Eddie told with a shrug.

"Really?" Bear and Andy gasped as they and other boys, except for Nate, stared at him with wide eyes.

Kenny moved slightly with nervous expression. "But ghosts aren't real," he claimed.

"Exactly," Stephen said. "I can't believe that Emmanuel finds paranormal matter that interesting when the world is full of different forms of culture."

"I have a feeling that by 'culture' he means Next HarMEOWny," Whisper noted to Nate.

"I think so too," Nate muttered.

"But ghosts too have a cultural significance."

A familiar calm voice made Nate and others to turn their heads and notice Lucas who was standing next to them.

"Sorry for shoving in your conversation," Lucas apologized.

"It's okay. But what do you mean about ghosts having the cultural significance?" Daniel asked curiously.

"Ghosts and spirits have been used as a warning against bad behavior and dangers for children and also to explain occurrences people have been unable to explain for millenium," Lucas explained. "And then there are all those urban legends."

"Well… That's true," Eddie admitted.

"Are you interested in ghosts too, Lucas?" Bear wondered. "Is the interest in ghosts and such a family trait or something since both you and your cousin Emmanuel have taken interest in them?"

Bear's question made other boys stare at Lucas with surprised expression.

"You two are related?" Stephen asked.

"I too was surprised when I heard about it first time," Eddie stated as he remembered the Saturday afternoon at his home when Katie happened to mention about it.

"You two are complete opposites of each other," Andy said.

"True," Eric agreed. "You're so quiet and calm, Lucas, while Emmanuel is more social and confident."

"But you're easier to talk to," Kenny added quickly.

Lucas shrugged. "We have been raised differently, so naturally our personalities differs too," he stated. Then Lucas smiled. "I hope that you had fun with my cousin."

"Yeah. Emmanuel was pretty cool. I would like to hear if he knows any more exciting things," Andy replied eagerly.

"Emmanuel seemed a little stern at first but he was actually pretty casual guy," Eric said.

"He was also graceful loser," Eddie recalled.

"I still can't understand how he doesn't know about modern times cultural icons," Stephen sighed, causin Nate and Whisper to roll their eyes.

The whole classroom fell suddenly silent when Mr. Johnson entered the room.

"Good morning, everybody," Mr. Johnson greeted his students as he walked towards his table. "Take your seats and lets start the day."

Obediently Nate and other children went to their desks.

"That went better than I expected," Whisper stated while floating next to Nate as the boy sat down at his desk. "Lord Enma enjoyed his day off with us and most of your classmates liked him. Even your parents liked him."

"True. I hope that we can have a similar day with Lord Enma again some day," Nate replied quietly with a cheerful smile.

The End
