Chapter 3
Sam Carter returned to work ready to pick up where she left off. She had finished the scans on the old artifact that Daniel tested Jane on and then she retrieved a new artifact from the store room and had brought it to her lab to examine further. After connecting the new artifact to the computer she was ready to start.
Jack walked into the lab with Teal'c as he too returned to work. He greeted, "Carter!" He wanted to see how her holiday went.
She glanced up, "Good morning, sir. Teal'c."
Jack came over to the table and began to fiddle with the artifact as he spoke, "How was your Thanksgiving?"
"Good!" she nodded. "Dad and Mark got to spend some quality time and I got to see the kids and catch up on they were doing."
Teal'c looked upon the artifact Jack was playing with. He asked, "Has that activated?"
Sam assured him, "It's Furling, Teal'c. He can't activate it."
Jack asked, "You mean it's safe for me to touch?" He was still fiddling with the odd looking device.
"Yes sir." she assured. "How was your Thanksgiving, sir?" She looked at Jack and then Teal'c.
Jack replied, "It was fine."
Teal'c disagreed, "JackO'Neill's attempt to…deep fry…the turkey resulted in a fire."
Jack defended, "Other than that it was good."
The Jaffa reported, "The store provided foods were satisfactory."
"You ate the whole pie." he reminded him.
Teal'c smiled in recollection, "Indeed."
Sam could picture the scene in her head of a burning turkey and Teal'c eating a whole pie by himself. She couldn't help but smile.
Daniel came to the door with Jane in tow. He greeted his friends, "Good morning! How was everyone's Thanksgiving?"
All wondered why a guard was behind Daniel but replied nevertheless. Jack started, "It was good."
Teal'c gave a disagreeing look.
Sam stated, "Dad and I had a good time visiting Mark and the kids. How was yours?"
"Not bad." he replied. "I spent it here on base working. This is Security Forces Specialist, Jane Rochester. She found a lose stone tablet in the store room and oddly she can read it. She came to my office and told me."
All eyes fell on Jane. She stood not sure what to say. She greeted the two officers, "Sirs."
Jack asked, "What do you mean she can read it?"
"I did some test yesterday and we found Jane can read Ancient, Nox, Asgard and Furling. Her mind can flip it to English. Only with those four though. Not with any native earth language or Goa'uld. She only recently found out she can do it. I just spoke to Hammond and he gave permission for us to work with Jane to figure out how she can do it. To give a little back story on Jane, she was found abandoned in the woods as a baby. I dug up the original news article. She found outside of Rochester, New York by a hunter in November. She was sitting on a bolder. The hunter didn't find any tracks in the snow they no idea how she even got there. She was dubbed 'baby doe' in the story. Later she was given the name Jane Doe and then a Judge gave her the last name of Rochester when they enrolled her in school. She never found who her parents are."
Jack asked Jane, "You were found in the woods as a baby?"
She nodded, "Yes sir. I don't know how I can read the languages. I just picked up the tablet that was sitting outside a box and it all automatically changed to English and I could read it…In English."
Sam stated, "That is interesting."
Jack placed the artifact back down on the table. He wondered, "So…what are we to do with, Rochester?"
Sam and Daniel traded glances.
Sam suggested, "We can do some more test to see if there is a reason this is happening to her."
"And…" Daniel handed her and hand written Gate address. "She can look at part of a stone tablet and fill in the missing parts. She completed this Gate address."
Sam took the address and looked rather surprised.
Jane picked up the artifact on the table. She wondered what it was for it seemed familiar and yet so alien at the same time.
Sam noticed the device activated as Jane examined it. She sucked in a breath and gathered her thoughts, "You must have some kind of Furling gene, Jane."
"Huh?" she asked confused.
"We have not been able to get much information on the Furlings because Colonel O'Neill can only activate Ancient tech. That's Furling. You just activated it." she informed.
She nearly jumped as she tossed the artifact back on the table afraid she did something horribly wrong. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do anything."
Sam soothed, "It's okay…I was only able to get a basic reading on Furling tech before. Now, I can run a full spectrum." she turned her attention to the computer, "It's giving off energy spikes. I have to study it further." She looked to Jack and then Daniel, "We can now run full test on Furling tech that we could not do before. She can activate it."
Jack asked, "Does this mean she's a Furling?"
Sam replied, "I really don't know if she just has a rare gene or if she's…"
Jane's eyes grew wide, "Crap! Maggie was right! I am an E.T.!" She began to panic, "They must have beamed me down to the rock and took off in a space ship or something." She started to hyperventilate.
Daniel soothed her, "Take a deep breath, Jane. We do not know how you got there and you could just have a rare gene…Though the Great Lakes is noted for UFO activity…" he mentioned for he was beginning to wonder if that scenario was true.
She buried her head in her hands, "Oh' god, I'm an alien from space. As if my life couldn't get any weirder. Now I have to work with SG-1 and lord only knows what shit they will bring back to base for security to deal with."
Sam gasped, "Is that what security thinks of us?"
Jack had to admit, "We do pile a lot on security."
Jane muttered, "My friends will hate me."
Daniel soothed her, "Jane…in order to deal with the weird stuff you must face your fears. Your friends are not going to hate you. You are not going to put security in a bad position. You are not even going off world. You are just going to work with me…and Sam…and we will help you figure this thing out. Okay?" he placed his hand on her shoulder.
She pulled herself together and sucked in a deep breath, "Okay."
Sam agreed, "You can really help me, Airman. You can activate artifact that the Colonel can't. Just don't pick anything up unless I say it's okay to do so."
"Yes ma'am." she agreed still shaken. "What were these Furlings?"
Daniel explained, "We believe they were a highly advanced human, much like the Ancients. They were on the four great races that seeded the galaxy. No one knows what became of them. Until now, I assumed they never came to earth. We need to have Janet run some medical test on you. Maybe she can isolate this Furling gene."
Sam added, "You may not be an alien from space, Airman. You might just have a gene that we have not discovered yet."
Jane blurted, "I think I'm an alien from space and they left me there for a reason. I don't remember but I just this gut feeling…they left here for a reason."
Daniel soothed, "It's unlikely you are from another planet, Jane."
"How can you say that when you go off world to other planets all the time?" she wondered.
"Well…" he reached for a reason, "that's why I think you are not from another planet."
Jack interrupted, "Really reaching on that one, Daniel. I think she's right and was abandoned here by some rouge group of Furlings we haven't found yet." He then pondered, "That or space pirates."
Daniel growled, "I'm trying to make her feel better, Jack. We don't know who her parents were of if they were Furlings or just had a gene."
Jack countered, "She can read all four languages and her minds flips to English. She filled in a Gate address. What more proof do you need, Daniel?"
Jane nodded in agreement, "Vermias."
All eyes fell on Jane.
Jack looked to Daniel, "Did you teach her that?"
"No," he confirmed. "Occasionally, she will say a word in Ancient."
"What did I say?" she asked alarmed.
"True." he told her.
"That's what I said." she agreed.
"You said it in Ancient." he told her.
Her shoulder's slunk, "I did it again?"
"Etium." Daniel replied.
"Irrum-bo." she miffed.
Jack glanced at Sam, Teal'c and then Daniel.
Sam asked Daniel, "What did she say?"
"I'm not sure. Possibly some kind of swear word. The…F…word." he figured.
"That's exactly what she said." Jack agreed.
Sam asked him, "How can you be sure, sir?"
"I was downloaded and I got all the swear words. Those I remember." he declared.
Jane asked wide-eyed, "I said 'fuck' out loud and I said it in Ancient?"
"Yes," Daniel confirmed.
She squinted, "No wonder I could swear at my C.O. and he had no idea what I said. I could never figure that one out."
Sam warned, "You can't get away with that now. Daniel can figure out what you said and apparently, Colonel O'Neill remembered those words…Nothing else…" she was nearly peeved that he could retain in his memory Ancient curse words but not any useful information.
"Yes ma'am." she replied.
Sam stated, "This program will take some time to run. I'll go with you and Daniel to see Janet and get those test run."
Jane wondered, "What kind of test?"
"Blood work, DNA test…" Sam pondered, "Janet want to run some cognitive test, brain wave test…maybe a CAT scan."
"I'm suppose to go on duty…" she began.
Jack assured, "You won't be security anymore. You will be in research."
"Oh," she felt a bit down for her friends were all enlisted. Then she realized, "Wait…I am the research."
Jack agreed, "Right!"
She rolled her head back, "That sucks."
He agreed, "It does. Been there myself."
Sam added, "But if you have the Furling gene it can help further us along in the finding out what happened to them."
Jane asked, "What if I am an actual Furling?"
Daniel figured, "Then we can help you figure out what happened to the rest."
She kidded with him, "What if I am a Furling princess?"
Jack teased, "Then we can help you find your long lost kingdom, your highness. Now, go to the infirmary."
"Yes sir." she replied understanding it was an order.
