They found Daniel, Teal'c and Cam at their usual table in the cafeteria.
"Sam, there you are!" Cam said. "We missed you this morning for coffee break."
"Jack, what are you doing here?" Daniel asked at the same time.
"I have a meeting with Reynolds in half an hour." Jack explained. "And Sam... We... had an appointment with Carolyn."
"Is your offspring developing well O'Neill?" Teal'c asked with a little concern in his voice.
Jack looked at Sam and encouraged her to tell them.
"Yes Teal'c. She's doing great. Ten fingers, ten toes, two ears and a nose. Everything is perfect."
Teal'cs smile started to match hers while Daniel and Cameron obviously had missed the important point.
But it was Cam who first made the connection. "Wait! Did you say 'she'? Like in baby girl??"
"Yes Mitchell, Sam said 'she'. We're going to have a daughter!" Jack proudly stated.
"Wow, that's great guys!" "Congratulations." Daniel and Cam spoke at the same time.
"Thank you. Carolyn told us today and we're very happy." Sam said, not able to hide her smile anymore.
"As much fun as this is, I need to be at a meeting in ten." Jack explained and got up, kissed his wife on the cheek and was about to turn around as Daniel said: "I'll walk you, I've got to get something from Walter, and he's in the control room."
They walked silently towards the elevator until they stood there waiting for the doors to open. When they were inside and the button pressed for the right floor Jack couldn't stand the silence anymore.
"Spill it Danny, I know you well enough that something's on your mind you didn't want to say in front of Sam."
"No. Look, I mean, I just wanted to check with you how you're feeling! Is it a good thing this baby is a girl?"
"Daniel, I really appreciate what you're doing here. I wasn't sure before, but all I want for this child is to be healthy. No matter if it is a boy or a girl. It is a baby and memories of Charlie will come back either way. But I'm looking forward to a Mini-Sam. It's great that it's a girl, but I would have been happy if it would have been a boy. Thank you for your concern, but I am okay."
"That's all I wanted to hear. I'm happy for you, you know that right?"
"I figured."
In the evening they sat together as Sam's phone beeped. A message from Cassie, asking if they want to Skype.
"That's perfect, we can tell her about her little sister." Jack delightedly told Sam.
"Hey Mom, hey Dad! How are you doing? Everything alright with the little one?" She asked and saw the look Sam and Jack were sharing. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong honey. She's perfectly alright. You're going to get a sister!"
"Wow! Really? That's great news! Congratulations guys. So Jack, you'll be surrounded by beautiful women, how does that feel?"
"I think it's my fate and I wouldn't want it any other way."
Sam beamed at him.
"And how are you doing Cass?"
"I'm fine. I have a lot of work to do. I have a few exams ahead of me in the next couple of weeks, but I'm good. I probably won't be able to come and visit you until they're done, but we could schedule a Skype date once a week so that I can at least see your baby bump grow from afar."
"I'd like that. And when you're done with all the exams you can come and we'll do something nice here."
"Yeah, great. If you want to wait for me we could change the basement into my room together and could go shopping together for the nursery. What do you think?"
"I think we can wait for you. I still have some time until the baby comes. We'd love to do this together with you."
After they said goodbye they sat back, Sam snuggled into Jack and put her feet on the couch as well. As soon as she ley comfortable with him Lucky also jumped up and placed himself carefully between her feet and the back of the couch, resting his head on her thighs.
Absentmindedly she started to caress him.
"I can hear you think, Sam."
"It's nothing. I was just thinking about names."
"Names?"
"Yeah. For the baby, you know?"
"Ah!" he said and started caressing her like she did with Lucky.
"Have you thought about names before?"
"Before what?"
"Before knowing it would be a girl."
"Honestly? No. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to discuss it."
"Me neither, I think I wanted to wait until we know if we have to look for boy names or girl names."
"What do you say if we take our time until the end of the week, then everyone has some time to come up with ideas and we can find out if they're matching?" Jack said, knowing already that he had just one name in mind that would fit perfectly.
"We can do that. Although I won't need the time, I've got a name already that I'd like to discuss, but please Jack, take all the time you need."
"I don't need time either."
"Now I'm afraid. What if we don't like the name the other one came up with? It's scary that we both set our heart on a name so quickly. It will be hard to decide."
"That's why we have all the time to talk about it. Wait, I have an idea."
He stood up, went into the kitchen and came back with two pieces of paper and two pens.
"We will both write down the name, fold the paper and exchange it."
"Okay!" she almost whispered and took the items.
When they were finished they carefully folded the paper and handed it over.
"Alright, how do you want to do this? Open on three?"
"Just open it."
"Okay."
Jack opened the paper first, his gaze fixed on the name Sam had written down. His face gave no emotions away.
Sam, suddenly unsure if this was the right way to do it, had to swallow, but she sensed he was waiting for her to reveal his chosen name. So she took all her courage and unfolded the paper. When she read what was written there she gasped, her heart seemed to stop and she began to cry.
When she looked up she looked directly into his warm brown loving eyes and saw him smile brightly. How was it possible that they fit so well together?
Unknowingly they had both written down the same name for their child. Jack leaned forward to kiss his wife before he kissed his way down to her belly. His smile grew even wider when he placed the last kiss there and whispered the name of their daughter for the first time.
"Hello Janet!"
