Chapter 8 Unconditional

It is Devlin's weekend at Maleficent's mansion. Maleficent is hosting a rather large party this weekend. The house is full of guests.

Devlin finds herself seated at the table alongside Maleficent and a group of Maleficent's party friends. The atmosphere is tense, and Devlin can sense the underlying animosity. Maleficent, in her commanding tone, orders Devlin to eat her dinner.

"I don't like this," Devlin retorts, pushing her fish dinner away in defiance.

Maleficent eyes narrow, and a wicked smile forms on her lips. "Then you can stay at the table until you finish your meal." she declares, her words dripping with a hint of malice.

Devlin feels trapped, caught between her mother's manipulative games and her own desires. She knows that Maleficent only uses her as a pawn to hurt Regina and Emma, to make them upset. Regina had bravely left Maleficent, and now Devlin is unwittingly caught in the crossfire, a tool for Maleficent to exact her revenge.

An hour passes, and Devlin remains seated at the table, her untouched fish dinner in front of her. The weight of the situation becomes unbearable, and Devlin musters up the courage to plead with Maleficent.

"Can I please call my mommy and have her come get me?" she begs, her voice filled with desperation.

Maleficents eyes narrow, and a sinister smirk plays on her lips. She takes a moment to relish in Devlin's vulnerability before responding.

"Why would I let you do that, my dear?" Maleficent taunts, her voice dripping with venom. "Your mommy left me remember? This is your punishment for her betrayal."

Devlin's heart breaks as she realizes the depths of Maleficent's cruelty. She feels trapped, longing for comfort and safety of her mother's embrace. But in this moment, Maleficent vindictiveness prevails and Devlin is left to endure the torment inflicted upon her.

As the tension lingers in the air, one of Maleficent's guests, a male, leans in and whispers something into her ear. Maleficent expression shifts, contemplating the suggestion made by her companion. A mischievous glint dances in her eyes as she considers the proposition.

"fine," Maleficent finally concedes, a sly smile forming on her lips. "You can go, Devlin. But remember, this isn't' over."

Devlin's eyes widen with a mix of relief and caution. She wastes no time in getting up from the table, her heart pounding with anticipation. She knows that Maleficent's words hold a hidden threat, but for now, she is grateful for the chance to escape this torment.

As Devlin rushes towards the door, the male guest winks at her, silently acknowledging her freedom. With a new found liberation, Devlin steps out into the hallway leaving behind the darkness of Maleficent's manipulations.

Devlin finds solace in her room, immersed in play and the freedom she now possesses. Suddenly, a knock on the door interrupts her thoughts. She hesitates for a moment before opening it, revealing the same gentleman who had intervened earlier, the one who convinced Maleficent to release her from the table.

"Hi' he greets her warmly, a gentle smile on his face. "My name is Graham."

Devlin's curiosity piques, and she returns his smile, feeling a sense of comfort in his presence. She extends her hand in greeting.

"Hi Graham." she replies, her voice filled with newfound hope, "I'm Devlin and I'm four now."

Graham's eyes twinkle with kindness as he takes her small hand in his. In that moment, Devlin senses a connection, a glimmer of trust forming between them. Little does she know, Graham's arrival may just be the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Unbeknownst to Devlin, the man standing before her, Graham, holds a significant secret that could change her life forever. Little does she know, Graham is the one who had a romantic encounter with Regina during a party, resulting in her pregnancy. He is, in fact, her biological father.

As they exchange pleasantries, Devlin remains oblivious to the truth that lies beneath the surface. Graham, however, feels a mix of emotions, torn between the desire to reveal his identity and the fear of disrupting Devlin's world. He knows that the truth has the power to bring joy and pain, and he must carefully navigate the delicate path ahead.

For now, Graham decides to cherish this moment of connection with Devlin, relishing in the opportunity to be present in her life. He hopes that one day, when the time is right, he can share the truth and forge a deeper bond with his daughter, offering the chance to know her biological roots.

Back at her moms home, Regina and Emma eagerly embrace Devlin, their hearts filled with love and longing after having missed her all weekend. Devlin, still unaware of the connection between Graham and Regina, excitedly shares her encounter with one of Maleficent's friends.

"Mommy, mama, I met one of Maleficent's friends, Graham. He's really nice," she exclaims, her innocent enthusiasm shining through.

Regina's heart sinks at the mention of Graham's name. Her mind flooding with memories of their shared past. She exchanges a quick glance with Emma, silently acknowledging the complexity of the situation. They hold Devlin a little tighter, their love and protectiveness intensifying.

"That's wonderful, kid" Emma responds. "We're glad you had a chance to meet someone nice."

Regina, her emotions swirling, musters a smile, masking the turmoil within. For now, they decide to cherish the joy Devlin experienced in meeting Graham, shielding her from the truth until the time is right. Together, they embrace their daughter, vowing to navigate the complexities of their intertwined past.

In the privacy of their bedroom, Emma and Regina find a moment to discuss the unexpected presence of Graham in their daughter's life. They sit close to each other, their expressions a mix of concern and contemplation.

"Regina, this could change everything. What are we going to do about Graham? What are we going to tell Devlin and how much?" Emma's voice filled with fear. Fear of losing her daughter, fear of Graham taking her place in Devlin's life.

Regina takes a deep breath, her heart heavy with the weight of Emma's fears. She understands the depth of Emma's concern, as they mirror her own worries bout Graham's presence in their lives. She reaches out to hold Emma's hand, offering a comforting squeeze.

"I understand your fears, Emma." Regina says softly, her voice filled with empathy. "But we can't let fear guide our actions. Devlin deserves to know the truth, and we need to navigate this situation with honesty and openness."

Emma's grip tightens, her eyes searching Regina's for reassurance. "But what if Graham tries to take Devlin away from us? What if he disrupts our family?"

Regina's voice remains steady, filled with determination. "We won't let that happen Emma. We will protect Devlin and our family with everything we have. Devlin is our daughter, and nothing will change that."

"That's easy for you to say Regina, she's your biological daughter, he can't take her away from you. I'm not blood related to her." Emma sighs irritated.

Regina's heart aches as she sees the pain and insecurity in Emma's eyes. She reaches out to gently cup Emma's face, her touch filled with tenderness and understanding.

"Emma, I know it's not easy for you," Regina says softly, her voice filled with empathy. "but blood doesn't define family. You have been there for Devlin since the beginning, loving her, nurturing her and being her mother in every way that matters."

Emma's eyes well up with tears, her vulnerability laid bare. Regina wipes away a stray tear with her thumb, her voice filled with reassurance.

"I maybe her biological mother, but you are her other mother, Emma." Regina continues, her voice unwavering. "You have loved her unconditionally, and that bond is just as strong and meaningful as any biological connection. Devlin knows you as her Mama, and that will never change."

Emma takes a shaky breath, her grip on Regina's hand tightening. "But what if she wants to know more about her biological father? What if she wants a relationship with him?"

Regina's voice remains steady, her love for Emma shining through. "If that time comes, we will support Devlin in exploring her roots. We will be there to guide her, to help her understand her story, and to ensure she feels secure in our love. We will face any challenges together, as a family. You are her other mother, her other parent, no one is going to take that way from you."

Regina's words resonate deepen within Emma's heart, soothing her fears and insecurities. She looks into Regina's eyes, finding peace and strength in their unwavering love.

"Thank you, Regina," Emma's gratitude can be heard. "I needed to hear that. I am Devlin's other mother and nothing can take that title away from me."

Regina smiles, her eyes shining with pride. "That's right, my love. You have been her rock from the beginning. Your bond with Devlin is unbreakable.

Emma takes a deep breath, feeling a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. "I won't let my fears overshadow the love I have for our daughter. We face all this together."

Regina nods, her hand continuing to rest on Emma's cheek. She leans in and kisses her. "Together Emma. We protect our family together."

As Devlin's little footsteps echo through the hallway, Emma and Regina's conversation comes to a gentle pause. They turn their attention towards the door.

"Devlin, sweetheart, is everything okay?" Regina asks softly, her voice filled with concern.

Devlin enters the room, her eyes still heavy with sleep. She rubs her eyes looking up at her mother's sensing the comforting presence that surrounds them. "I can't sleep" Devlin murmurs tiredly.

Regina opens her arms, inviting Devlin into a comforting embrace. "Come here little one."

Devlin runs over to Regina, seeking comfort in her mother's arms. She notices Emma's tear stained face and looks at her. "Mama, why are you sad?" Devlin's little voice full of concern.

Emma takes a deep breath, trying to compose herself before answering Devlin's concern.

"I'm not sad kid," Emma replies, voice gentle yet tinged with sadness. "Sometimes grown-ups have emotions that can make them feel a little overwhelmed. But it doesn't mean that I'm not happy or that I don't love you."

Devlin looks at Emma, so much innocence, yet understanding in her eyes. She reaches out wiping a tear from Emma's cheek. "I love you Mama." Devlin says softly, her voice filled with tenderness. "And I want you to be happy. Can I give you a hug?"

Emma's heart swells with love for her daughter, touched by her empathy and kindness. She pulls Devlin into her arms and embraces her in a tight hug.

"Thank you, my sweet Devlin." Emma whispers, her voice filled with gratitude. "your love and hugs always make me feel better. I am so lucky to have you and Mommy in my life."

Regina joins them, wrapping her arms around both Emma and Devlin, when she speaks her voice is soft and reassuring. "We're a family and we're here for each other." Regina hugs tighter. "Sometimes grown-ups have moments when they feel a little sad, but with the love and support of our family, we can find comfort and happiness together.

Devlin lays between her moms, still wide awake and processing information.

"Devlin, honey, you need to try to sleep." Regina opens one eye seeing her daughter staring at the ceiling.

"I can't stop my mind, mommy." Devlin replies frustrated.

Regina gently stroke Devlin's hair, trying to sooth her restless thoughts. She understands all the feeling all too well, knowing how difficult it can be to quiet a busy mind.

"I know it can be hard to stop our thoughts sometimes, but let's try something together okay?"

Devlin looks at her mom, her eyes searching for guidance. She nods, willing to give anything a try to slow her thoughts.

"Close your eyes, sweetheart." Regina instructs "Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, imagine all your thoughts floating away like clouds in the sky."

Devlin follows her moms' instructions, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. She attempts to imagine her thoughts floating away in a cloud.

"Now, focus on your breathing," Regina continues, her voice soothing. "Feel the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe in and out. Let each breath bring you a sense of peach and relaxation.

Devlin attempts to follow her mother's instructions, taking a deep breath and exhaling. She attempts to clear her mind, but her restlessness takes over. "Mommy, who's Graham and why does he make you and Mama sad?"

Regina's breath hitches realizing that their attempt to calm Devlin's mind has inadvertently brought up more questions. She exchanges a glance with Emma, silently communicating their shared concern.

"Devlin, Graham is someone from my past. He was a person who was once a part of my life, but things didn't work out." Regina attempts to explain.

"Why is he always at Maleficent's" Devlin fails to turn her mind off.

"Graham spends time at Maleficent's cause they have a connection. They have their own history and relationship that we can't fully explain right now."

Devlin sits up and looks between Regina and Emma, sensing something else is there. "but why is he in my life now?"

Regina takes a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "Sometimes, people come into our lives unexpectedly and it can be confusing and overwhelming."

"Who is Graham to me?" Devlin pushes "Why is he so nice?"

Regina and Emma exchange glances understanding that Devlin's curiosity and restlessness won't be easily settled. They both take deep breath, realizing that they need to provide her with answers so her mind can settle.

"Graham is someone who has a biological connection to you, Devlin," Regina's voice is gentle and honest. "He's your biological father."

Emma adds, sitting up. "He's being nice to you because he wants to get to know you and be part of your life."

Devlin's eyes widen with surprise, her mind racing even more and processing this new information. "but why now?"

Regina takes a moment to gather her thoughts, "Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns and people make choices that they later regret or want to change. Graham has recently come to understand that he wants to be a part of your life."

Emma continues "We know this is a lot to take in, we didn't anticipate this either. We love you no matter what."

Devlin's brows furrow as she processes the information. "So is Graham gonna be my daddy now? I'm so confused, I don't want to be taken away from my mommies, I don't want him to take me like Maleficent does." Devlin begins to panic.

Regina and Emma immediately recognize the panic in Devlin's voice and the fear in her eyes. Exchanging worried glances, they both reach out to hold her hands, offering her comfort.

"Oh my sweet child, we understand that this is a lot to take in." Regina softly squeezes Devlin's hand. "But please know that Graham being in your life doesn't mean he will take you away from us. We will always be your moms and our love for you will never change."

Emma adds squeezing Devlin's other hand. "We will never let anyone take you away from us, Devlin. We are your parents and we will protect and keep you safe."

"but what if he wants to be my dad and replace you?" Panic continues in her little voice.

Regina and Emma exchange a gentle smile, understanding the depth of Devlin's fears. "Devlin, being a parent is not about replacing someone else." Regina explains, "It's about love and care. Graham may want to be a a part of your life, but that doesn't mean he will replace us. You can have a relationship with him if you want to, but it won't change our love for you and the fact that we are your parents."

Emma smiles at Regina having heard this earlier from her and reaffirming telling their daughter this "We will always be here for you, guiding you and loving you unconditionally. Nothing will change that."

"What does unconditionally mean?" Devlin tries to understand.

They release their embrace and take a moment to explain the concept of unconditional love to her.

"Unconditional love means loving someone without any conditions or limitation. It means that our love for you, Devlin Elizabeth, is not based on anything you do or don't do. We love you just as you are, no matter what."

"Unconditional love means that our love for you is constant and unwavering. It doesn't change based on your actions, feelings or anything else. We love you for simply being you."

Devlin checks her understanding asking "so you love me even when I make mistakes or am not perfect?"

"Correct" Regina and Emma say at the same time.

Regina continues "Unconditional love means that you can always come to us, no matter what you're going through or how you're feeling. We will always be here to listen, understand, and love you through it all."

"So you won't be mad if I like Graham?" Devlin asks remembering how Graham stood up for her and was nice to her.

"Devlin, we will never be mad at you for having feelings or forming connections with other people, including Graham."

"If you feel a connection with Graham and what to have a relationship, mommy and I are okay with that." Emma reaches for Regina's hand and squeezes it. Her own fears being replaced seeing her daughter's racing mind.

Devlin snuggles into her parents. "You'll always be my mommies?" She questions before closing her eyes.

Regina and Emma hold Devlin close, feeling the warmth of her presence and the love that fills the room. They give each other tender smiles, their hearts overflowing with love for their daughter.

"Yes, Devlin," Regina whispers softly "We will always be your mommies"

Emma adds holding Devlin and Regina tight in her arms. "You are our precious daughter, and our love for you will never waver. We will be by your side through everything in your life."

Regina and Emma lean over Devlin and kiss each other before kissing Devlin's forehead, feeling her breathing indicating that she is now fast asleep, in their arms.
