Chapter 10

Alex was tense, fearful, as she sat in the infirmary, unable to believe everything that had happened. The sudden Reaper attack had left everyone shaken, then there was Sean's injury, he was currently being seen to, while the Diaz Family, Chris and Lyla all waited anxiously outside the room, she sat opposite them, unable to escape the feelings within her, blaming herself. She knew after all that Sean, or Lyla for that fact, would have been out there if she hadn't tried to set up the picnic for them to get them together. Looking over to the others again she bit her lip.

"You guys, I...I'm so-"

"Don't Alex." Esteban interrupted her. "Don't say sorry, you're not to blame."

Alex shook her head. "But if I hadn't set up-"

"Then Sean and I might have never got together. It wasn't your fault this happened to him, it was the Reapers fault." Lyla insisted firmly.

Chris shifted in his seat. "The Reapers, they were here for me…"

"Don't you blame yourself either, Chris." Daniel insisted. "The Council knows it's the Reapers fault, everyone knows."

"Exactly, and they're worried about it. Everyone knows the Reapers have been at war with Haven Springs for quite a while by now." Esteban confirmed.

Alex let out a slow sigh, but calmed down. Esteban was right, everything that happened was down to the Reapers, she had no doubt that even if they hadn't managed to end up out at the Field that day, the Reapers would have attacked anyway, leading to someone else getting injured or worse, killed.

That was when the door to the treatment room opened and the doctor stepped out, everybody turned to her.

"He's awake now, he'll survive...but his eye is gone." She explained. "It'll take time for him to recover but he'll have to deal with only having one eye for the rest of his life."

The news left them shook but still they headed inside to find Sean was indeed awake and turned to them, a little awkwardly, his left eye was covered by a large bandage.

"Lyla...Dad, Daniel, I, you guys…" He burst out, trying to control his emotions.

Lyla immediately took his hand. "It's okay Sean, it's okay, you're okay."

Sean bit his lip. "I just, my eye…"

"I know."

Esteban gently tried to reassure his eldest. "It's going to be okay Sean, we'll get you through this, you'll make it, you're a survivor and you're going to manage this, we'll all help."

Daniel and Chris both nodded in agreement and Sean managed a smile, Alex breathed a sigh of relief. Sean was going to be alright, but things were still costly. One thing that was clear, this was an open declaration, it was impossible to avoid now going forward. They were waiting for the Council to make the announcement to make things official, but they all knew, they were now in open war with the Reapers. With that thought still lodged in her mind she left the infirmary, leaving Sean with his family and Lyla.

When she exited she saw Isaac standing there, glaring.

"Okay, that was messed up." He said quickly. "I can't believe those punks had the nerve to interrupt us, just when things were getting good and we could have-"

Alex shook her head. "That's what you're worried about, not Sean getting hurt?"

That silenced Isaac, confronted with what amounted to his blunt insensitivity. With another glare he shook his head and turned away.

"You'll see what I'm talking about Alex, I know what you truly wanted and I was willing to give it to you, but you had to keep lying to yourself." He grumbled.

With that he stalked off, leaving Alex confused.

'What is he talking about, did he, did he think I was lying about not wanting a relationship? Did he think we'd actually start a relationship from that, makeout session, that's all it was. I was perfectly honest with him that I didn't want a relationship, did he just ignore that or...or is he up to something else?' Alex wondered. 'All the same...That makeout sessions wasn't quite what I expected, I didn't feel like I really, maybe my hang-ups haven't been about being worried about dying a virgin after all...Maybe I, maybe I'm more interested in females than males...Urg, this is just too confusing.'

She shook her head, her own personal issues were threatening to overwhelm her and she had to keep herself composed, to focus on the more important things right now. She could only hope that things would get better soon and they could hopefully figure out a way out of this conflict with the Reapers before it's too late. Otherwise it was going to prove very costly, in terms of both supplies and the lives of so many members of their community, so many innocents at risk. But she couldn't see a way no matter how hard she tried, even with the Infected around, the humans proved to be the real monsters and only one thing seemed to loom on the horizon, no matter what, war.
