A blond sitting on a bench along the side of the bullhead jolted awake at the grossed-out cry of a couple girls arguing. The sounds from someone upchucking didn't help.
Spiky blond hair, a bit on the short side but a single slim ponytail, dyed red, that went down to the center of his back. He was dressed in a short red haori, stopping in what looked to be a ripped edge at his upper thigh, decorated with a fearsome image of a nine-tailed fox on the back. A white button up shirt underneath, a black pair of pants and a pair of orange tabi boots.
The main things that were noticeable however, were the two fox ears upon his head as well as the extra bushy fox tail, golden on all accounts with red tips. The last part to his outfit, black bandages that wrapped around his eyes, tight enough that if one paid attention, they would notice that they sunk inwards where he should have eyes.
Sitting next to him was a staff, which looked strangely like a white tree branch, bark and all. The top looked to just be the end of a branch, but at the bottom, it looked to be a group of roots that curled and twisted around each other to a rounded point, appearing to curl into a fist.
Sighing, Naruto Uzumaki groaned, grabbing his staff as he got up and moved to the exit, getting there just as the ramp lowered. Our blond hero stepped off to the side just as another blond rushed down the ramp and threw his head into a trash bin.
Naruto groaned as he shook his head. "The airsickness meds were three sections to your right, and two shelves down when you gave up on them."
"I will remem…" the other blond's response was cut off by more upchucking. Before the boy blinked upon realizing what was said, confused and a little weirded out, he turned around to address the speaker.
Before the boy could speak up, he was once more cut off, this time by an explosion. Naruto walked towards the incident, seeing that was where he should go, ignoring the other blond that was now confused and slightly concerned.
As Naruto reached the location of the explosion, he could hear the frustrated yelling of a young woman, what others wouldn't notice however, was the underlining of concern within. This girl was frustrated that her luggage was knocked over, annoyed that some of her stuff could have been damaged, frustrated even more by the fact that it was her dust luggage that was spilled.
But unable to properly express her concern over the fact that accidents concerning dust was really dangerous. Tripping over the luggage was dangerous for everyone that was nearby, and her frustration over the incident happening at all, was covering up any concern for the girl that caused it.
"Well, you two are starting the year off with a bang, room for one more in this party?" As the two turned, Weiss' eyes narrowed slightly, flexing her fingers in preparation to defend herself if the situation called for it. Something that went unnoticed, was her feet moving in a way to spring in front of Ruby as well.
Ruby groaned, catching Weiss off guard slightly, "why? Are bad puns a requirement for huntsmen now?"
As little red turned to the punner, she blinked as her sight was pulled towards fuzzy ears, and a fluffy tail. Naruto chuckled as Weiss rolled her eyes at the girl. "Do you two know one another?"
Naruto stepped closer to the two as he spoke, answering for the younger girl. "No actually, I just arrived like the both of you, my name is Naruto Uzumaki."
Ruby was the first to take his hand, glad for the distraction from all the yelling. "Ruby Rose."
As the two turned towards the third person there, she scoffed as the two looked at her expectantly. Though as she was about to take his hand and introduce herself, feeling slightly safer grabbing his hand after nothing happened to Ruby when she did, as well as seeing the covering on his eyes when she went to look into them, another voice spoke up. "Her name is Weiss Schnee, heiress of the Schnee Dust Company."
Weiss would have normally been glad for the recognition, this time, however. This time, she had actually thought about leaving her last name out of her introduction, thinking that if the blind faunus wasn't told it, he could actually be a friend rather than a potential enemy.
The girl continued as the three turned to her. "Known as one of the largest producers of energy propellant in the world. As well as controversial labor forces and questionable business partners."
"Rude." The answer, while expected, came from the unexpected. Naruto was standing there frowning at the girl. "One should always introduce themselves before cutting off another's introduction. Such manners are really unbecoming of a young huntress in training."
Blake widened her eyes as she recoiled from the boy's words, "what? You're going to call me rude, when she stood there yelling at that younger girl?"
"Weiss here was nervous over her luggage, which contained volatile contents, being kicked around. In her panic over the safety of herself and everyone within range, she made a bad call. You however, came and intruded within our conversation, that had already calmed down, nearly inciting a fight or argument by calling her out on something without reason, antagonizing her to antagonize her."
Blake actually shuffled slightly, looking slightly nervous and put off by Naruto reprimanding her, when she had just wanted to warn the faunus about who he was dealing with. Naruto scoffed at the girl, "if your plan was just to antagonize someone, you shouldn't have bothered coming over here."
Blake actually got frustrated over that. She had noticed the male faunus on the bullhead and took notice of his vision issue. Her plan was to warn him about who he was approaching, fully believing she was helping him by warning him and informing the younger girl about who they were dealing with.
Ruby felt awkward as the three stood there, Naruto was getting fidgety since the new girl approached them, Weiss had honestly calmed herself after Naruto spoke up in her defense. After clearing her throat to garner their attention, she spoke up to calm everyone down. "Maybe we can all try again? Just take a step back, a deep breath to calm our nerves, just try again to put a better foot forward?"
Naruto scoffed. "If the faunus extremist is willing, I will try as well."
Weiss gave the boy a questioning look, before her second glance at the black themed girl allowed her to catch the twitching of her bow. Weiss went rigid as she slid slightly behind Naruto, though she did flinch when she felt his tail lazily swaying, brushing along her shin. So fluffy.
Blake glared at the boy, frustrated that he outed her like that. "Speaking of being rude."
Naruto tilted his head, before he twitched, as if he glitched out, before he opened his mouth and gasped. "Oh, I guess I didn't really see that you were hiding what you were. Guess I should have realized that, with how cowardly you are."
Blake growled as she almost drew her weapon on the boy, if Ruby hadn't stepped in between them. "Please stop this fighting, we haven't even stepped through the front door yet, you don't want to be kicked out before we make it through the first day, right?"
Before either of the faunus could say anything else, someone else decided to intrude. "Hello, um…"
It was the armored blond that threw up on the bullhead. "Hello, heard some of what you all were saying, and if there is room for one more in this conversation…"
The four others each shifted their attention, though Ruby smiled widely. "Perfect timing, vomit boy!" Ignoring his crying about his newly dubbed nickname, little red decided to pull him forward. "Since one of our intros was ruined, each of us now have another chance to redo theirs so that our new conversation participant knows who we are. My name is Ruby Rose, it's nice to meet you."
Deciding to try and salvage what he could, "Juane Arc, short, sweet, rolls off the tongue and the ladies love it, I am truly honored to meet each of you."
Weiss scoffed. "Who are you trying to convince, us or yourself?"
Naruto sighed as he shook his head. "Juane, be yourself, not what you think others want you to be. You can only find happiness when you are true to yourself, masks make terrible bridges after all."
Blake flinched at his words, the memories they incite not being very welcoming. "Blake Belladonna."
"My name is Weiss Schnee." The girl was still slightly behind Naruto, the open faunus being the one she felt more inclined to trust rather than the girl that hid her race. Though she was at first nervous with him, at least he didn't try to hide that he was a faunus, unlike the girl that got angry when her cover was blown.
The word choice for that thought also made it sound frightening. She might have a slight distrust towards faunus, but she trusted the headmaster to not invite assassins into his school, but a faunus that was hiding the fact they were a faunus, made her slightly more nervous than a faunus that openly showed their heritage. After all, only criminals try to hide, and if the White Fang were willing to destroy a train to get to her father, what would they be willing to do to her? At least if they were open about it, she could take steps to settle her own nerves and realize that they weren't going to try and murder her when her back was turned.
Ozpin wouldn't invite murderers into his school after all. Right?
"Naruto Uzumaki." Naruto sounded bored, maybe a little annoyed.
Ruby smiled, proud of herself for stopping the fighting. Take that Yang, who's socially challenged now? "So…" Spoke too soon…
Everyone was probably a little stuck right now, Blake stayed so she could pull the male faunus to the side and interrogate him, Juane was just hoping to make some friends, Weiss was just nervous about turning her back on the irritated faunus girl, and why Naruto remained was anyone's guess.
Ruby shifted her attention between the two sides, before she snapped her fingers and pulled her weapon from behind her, giving a bit of flare as she unfolded it into scythe form. "This is Crescent Rose, it's a High-Caliber Sniper-Scythe."
Juane gasped in shock. "Wow, and all I got is this." Upon drawing his sword, he gave a lazy swing as he activated the sheath to switch to its shield form. "It's called Crocea Mors, it used to belong to my great-great grandfather during the Great War."
Naruto hummed as he stepped forward, "the blade of a hero." Juane stared in surprise at the boy, listening closely as he spoke. "The Arcs fought alongside the king of Vale to protect free-will and people's rights. Hopes and dreams empower your blade Juane, hold your head high, and let them guide your arm, and you shall always strike true."
As Juane looked at his sword in a much different light, the three girls also reassessed their view. Maybe there was more to the boy than they thought at first.
Juane smiled at Naruto. "Thanks, I came all this way, and with nothing but this sword, and I never thought about things like that." Closing his eyes, Juane raised his sword and held it with both hands as he took a deep breath, thinking over Naruto's words, and without realizing it, felt his soul resonate with that of his blade. "I can only do my best to honor them."
Naruto smiled, letting a slight chuckle out. "If anyone has a simple weapon, it's got to be me." Naruto tapped his staff on the ground a couple times. "My staff is simply that, just a stick for a blind man to swing at people. I call it Idaina Ki."
"Mighty tree? Powerful name for something you call just a stick." Blake's tone made it obvious she wasn't impressed. Whether that be from the name, or the staff itself was anyone's guess.
Ruby smiled though. "Well, as long as you love and trust your weapon, it will support you through thick and thin."
As Naruto smiled, giving the girl a nod of appreciation, Juane took extra care to strap his sword to his belt properly. The boy's thoughts about his weapon had really shifted after this conversation.
Weiss looked at the three, before she sighed slightly. Pulling her weapon from her belt, she swung it with a flourish, allowing some dust to trail after it. Her swings could be compared to a conductor's. "My own weapon is a Multi Action Dust Rapier named Myrtenaster."
With another flourish, she returned it to the sheath, smiling as Ruby applauded her. Juane looked confused, but shrugged as he decided to not make himself look like a fool and ask how a rapier could be "multi action".
Blake rolled her eyes as the others just decided to show off to each other, Weiss' servants having already taken care of her things, leaving just the five of them. "Gambol Shroud, it's a Variant Ballistic Chain Scythe."
Blake didn't see the point in them all doing this, but figured if everyone was willing to talk about themselves. "Hey, Naruto, I noticed that you don't have any trouble keeping eye contact with everyone. I have met some people with blindness before, and they always have at least some troubles with that."
Weiss shifted slightly, actually having even forgotten that he was blind through their talk about weapons. Now she was beginning to get a bit nervous about Naruto's answer, it being possible that he was only faking blindness.
Though the sunken spots on his blindfold were obvious indicators that were kind of hard to fake. Blake rolled her eyes at Weiss' actions. "He obviously is blind heiress; I am just curious about his skill in indicating where everything is. If you hadn't noticed, he has been looking around at everyone as if he weren't."
"It's my semblance."
Juane shuffled his feet as he started to pay attention, hoping to catch some clues on what that even was. Ruby perked up in curiosity, "are we also going to talk about our semblances? I never thought I would make such great friends on my first day here."
Naruto chuckled at the girl's enthusiasm. "Well, we still have somewhere to be, so if you all really want to know about how I can see even when I am missing my eyes, we should start walking as I explain it."
Weiss almost pouted as she turned away from everyone, only for one of her butlers to step up and mention how they took care of her things where they were directed to by Glynda Goodwitch. Freeing her up to follow her new… friends? Weiss shook her head as she began to walk beside Naruto, doing her best to keep him between her and Blake, even if the girl stopped being so hostile, it was still hard to trust her after she had been so earlier.
Naruto chuckled as he began explaining. "My semblance is actually rather straightforward; it is simply called Sight. Before I lost my eyes, I could look and see anything from anywhere. And yes, that does include things that you wouldn't want me seeing."
Each of the girls stared at him for a second, before they covered their chests, suddenly feeling very uncomfortable. "Not only is doing that pointless, but I ain't using it right now, nor would I desire to cause you discomfort for doing so. I tend to have to explain this often, so people don't get the wrong idea about me, but my semblance, without the physical medium of my eyes, kind of evolved to help me."
Ruby began to bounce a bit ahead as she gasped. "Your semblance evolved to help you deal with your lack of sight? That sounds both extremely cool, but super sad. In your darkest hour of need, your soul responded to help you when you needed it most."
Naruto chuckled as he nodded. "Yeah, my eyes are no longer there to limit what I can see, and where or when I can look. I used to need to have line of sight, but now."
Ruby shivered as she turned around and swung her hand at empty air. "What?!"
As everyone gave Ruby confused looks, Naruto chuckled. "That is how it feels when my semblance is active and trying to get close enough to look through your clothes. As it was from behind, you must have felt my presence breathing down your neck."
"Honestly, it was rather nice. Kind of similar to when I get hugs from Yang or dad. It just felt so warm and inviting, like a nice warm heating blanket." Ruby giggled as she scrunched up her shoulders.
Naruto sighed. "Yeah, it's still my soul doing it, and as long as I'm alive, it will still have the same warmth that I myself do."
As Juane nodded, still not wanting to expose himself as not in the know, seeing as the four didn't look surprised, which meant this was common knowledge with this semblance thing. "You said both where and when, what did you mean by that?"
Juane's question had actually surprised Weiss and Blake, neither believing the boy attentive enough to notice something that almost slipped by themselves. Well, he just earned some rep points, now if only his vomit boy status hadn't already knocked those points into a negative beforehand.
Naruto chuckled as he nodded. "Without the physical limit of my eyes, I was forced to look beyond what is there physically. The last person that held this semblance, learned to see beyond vision, but if there is no vision, there is nothing in the way of me looking beyond. Without being able to physically see, my sight is more metaphysical."
As the others thought about that, they grew closer to the auditorium, as Blake stepped forward slightly faster to open the door. "I feel curious about how you lost them. The most common account I have heard, was an accident in the dust mines due to lack of safety protocols."
"I have never once stepped foot in a mine, I actually lost them while on a boat, trying to escape some psycho named Tyrian if my memory serves me correctly. I can't recall every detail my mother said that day, I just recall her asking someone to make sure I was safe as she led the murderer away from us, carrying a wooden doll."
Naruto barely held back a flinch as he felt Weiss place her hand on his left arm, as Ruby did the same on his right. Blake completely flinched, realizing too late that she stuck her foot in her mouth there. Juane reached over and knocked his fist against his shoulder to show his own support.
As the group stepped into the large room, there was a blonde off in the distance that waved Ruby over. Ruby pouted at the girl, sticking her tongue out at her before hugging Naruto's arm and sticking with her friends. This had the side effect of the blonde gasping, hamming up her hurt. The interactions actually caused those that could see it to raise their eyebrows at them, leaving Naruto to activate his semblance to see why he was being held so tightly.
Naruto's tail subconsciously curled around Ruby's waist as he looked over the scene from a third perspective, causing the girl to blush. The blond faunus was the only one to take notice of the blonde girl's fast paced walk over, almost missing the slight glare she had. "Rubes, are you ignoring me for a boy? How could you? I am both totally distraught, and completely proud all rolled into one. Wanna introduce me to your new gang?"
Ruby pouted at her. "I don't see why I should, seeing as you ditched me the moment, we stepped foot off the bullhead."
Weiss actually interrupted here. "Are you telling me that she left you alone, surrounded by older people, all of whom are strangers with who knows what kind of personalities. What if someone was cruel enough to try and take advantage of you? No wonder you were distraught enough to trip over my luggage."
Weiss finished her statement by glowering at the girl, who looked nervous and slightly guilty. "Hey, she needs to learn to spread her wings and soar on her own. I can't be expected to be her only friend throughout all this, right?"
Weiss sighed as she shook her head. "You might have had a point, and I would have even agreed with you, if you had stayed close by and been the first to react after she had tripped over my suitcase filled with dust and pretty much caused an explosion on the cliffside. Everyone deserves a chance to spread their wings, flow with their own current, but they will never take flight if they are too scared of the fall."
As Yang stood there and listened, she would admit that she felt bad for what she had done, but she was also feeling downright frustrated at Weiss as the girl continued. "You should have pushed Ruby to venture out, but you shouldn't just kick her from the nest with no one to catch her if she couldn't handle it."
Naruto smiled as he nodded. "Wow, didn't know our little snowflake had such frostbite in her."
Weiss blushed as she heard Naruto and Ruby hugged her. "I knew you were bestie material. Bestie, better than all the resty."
Blake still looked pouty since they got here, her composure has been out of whack ever since Naruto called her out for calling Weiss out. A faunus had stood up to someone that called out a Schnee, which wasn't what she was expecting, as well as calling her out as being an extremist, which she resented being called.
And to top it all off, her irritation over the whole situation caused her cat ears to twitch and expose her to the Schnee. Maybe Ruby was right, and she should take a step back, take a deep breath, give herself a chance to re center herself and get her head back in order.
Juane frowned as he decided to step in to defend the blonde girl a bit. "It might not be the popular vote here, but I can kinda see where Ruby's sister is coming from."
Everyone turned towards Juane, raised brows encouraging him to explain. "My opinion comes from experiencing life with seven overprotective sisters. I kinda agree with all of you, there has to be some safety precautions, I'm not that foolish, but in some cases, you can be overly cautious. That balance between overprotective and careless isn't easy to find, and we are going to mess up and tip towards one or the other sometimes."
Yang smiled as someone was on her side. "See Rubes, one of your friends agrees with me."
The girl then crossed her arms and growled slightly. "Now if only it wasn't the jerk that hurled on my shoes on the bullhead. Seriously not cool."
Juane groaned. "I am sorry, that was the first time I was on a bullhead. I tried to find some air sickness meds but wasn't able to in time before the ship took off."
So distracted was the group, they almost missed Ozpin's speech. Though Ruby and Weiss were able to catch Naruto's shivering, mostly because he was practically hiding behind them. Naruto had his head down as he was taking extra care to control his breathing since the moment the headmaster started to speak.
Naruto was afraid of Ozpin, but if that were true, why did he join Beacon?
Something to talk about later, Glynda was telling them about sleeping arrangements.
Yang had tried to get her sister to chill out about the whole ditching her thing, but Weiss had practically stolen her role as big sis at this point. The heiress had started out by offering to help the younger girl with her nightly routine, which at first confused her, until they wound up brushing through each other's hair. Weiss shared some of her own self care products that she brought, though Ruby admitted to never having used any before. Yang spent some time glaring at Weiss, apparently, after Ruby explained her story and why Ozpin invited her to the school early, Weiss was impressed with the girl's talent.
A couple heartfelt words about being scared when dealing with everyone accepting her because of her age, also tugged at the heiress' heartstrings. It also didn't hurt that Naruto played mediator when it came to some things, like asking the right question at the right time to get the conversation rolling into a positive direction.
It was as if Naruto knew what questions to ask at what times, so that everyone could explain properly and keep the peace. Juane even got a chance to shine.
Apparently, living in the countryside allowed him to build his body through hard work, and was kind of handsome if he wasn't wearing those silly onesie pajamas. Juane apparently worked on ranches and farms alike to build up the money to get himself here and had even mentioned that he could talk with his uncle and see about allowing them a chance to ride horses if they ever got the chance to visit his home.
The girls each wouldn't mind the experience, Ruby even being excited about the chance. Yeah, she could probably outrun the horse, but it was the experience that mattered.
Something that everyone started to realize was that Juane was pretty much the most interesting person there. Which caused the girls to really look at their lives and rethink several things.
Yang and Ruby lived in town, where nothing much really happened. They had a corgi named Zwei, but they were two well behaved young girls, most of the time. They each had a recent story, Yang and her recent fight at the bar, Ruby's story with Roman Torchwick, but both were quickly explained, and over with. Their recent adventures were the exception, not the norm.
Blake's life was a bit complicated and was uncomfortable telling her story. Which, after she thought about it, was mostly just her following Adam, and trying to convince him to be better, before giving up and abandoning the White Fang. She couldn't really talk about that for obvious reasons. She also couldn't think of a way to tell a story without it sounding like she followed around Adam like a love-sick puppy.
Weiss was pretty much a caged bird. Classes for this, classes for that, she mentioned her two siblings, Winter and Whitley, and even how she has sung on stage for high class audiences. But she didn't have many stories to tell.
Juane had stories about how he learned to take care of animals, his first experience with riding horses, the time he was painting the fence and a goat smacked it from the other side and caused him to dump paint all over himself. The one day that he woke up in a dress because he overslept.
Juane had plenty of fun and funny stories to tell, having taken Naruto's advice earlier to heart and decided to just be the goofy country kid that he is, rather than some suave lady's man that he thought he had to be. And he had everyone laughing with him, he was making friends, and it encouraged him to trust them with some of his more embarrassing moments from back home.
Naruto did end up having to explain his fear of Ozpin, which came about when he finished his explanation to Juane's question about why he said when. Naruto's sight semblance went beyond just looking around the 'now', he could watch things through time. He could view the present with near clarity, if with very little color, and could watch something, or someone, through their past. He could basically watch them in reverse, though it was a bit staticy, apparently, he wasn't powerful enough with it to get a clear picture of your past.
The bigger shock about his semblance, however, was when he explained that he could look forward. It started out just as clear as his present vision, but as he ventured forward, everything blurred into pure white. He could only look seconds into the future, but there will be occasions when his semblance just activates and gives him a completely accurate and identifiable vision of the future.
He has explained that he has had only two premonitions before, the first was of an injured warrior, which got him his staff. The second one leading him here, a beacon of light showing nothing but a comfortable and safe place, along with the image of the poisoned warrior that gave him his staff, so he could keep his promise to her.
Though this also led to him having to explain, if he could grow stronger, learn to have premonitions on command, he would be a powerful seer for whoever could get him on their side. Ozpin was one person that caused him to fear being put in a cage and forced to use his semblance for the man. Anyone in power, whether they be good or evil, would give anything to be able to see the future.
If someone found out about his power, there was no telling what they would do to him. They could try to force him to use it for them, or maybe bribe him, but no matter which, he would be nothing but a tool.
Naruto had tensed up, using his vision to see their reactions, being ready to fight his way out. He refused back then, and he still refuses to be nothing but a tool now.
Naruto's vision nearly missed Ruby rushing in and hugging him, her tears wetting his shirt, followed closely by Weiss. Blake hadn't hugged him, but she did reach out and place a hand on his shoulder, as Yang and Jaune made no move. Yang because she didn't feel she was close enough to him for contact to be welcomed, and Jaune didn't, because he felt that he would just make the girls that were hugging him feel awkward.
His sisters all mentioned to not hug a guy that was already being comforted by girls after all.
So, with promises to protect him, the girls pulled the boy off towards the ballroom, pretty much falling asleep to stories of a country boy and his many fun stories about his many odd jobs on a ranch, farm, and even one or two about his sisters and their pranks and teasing of him.
Sorry, forgot to post this the other day because I overslept, which caused me to forget. I hope this is another story everyone can enjoy.
I am open to hearing your opinions, and would be more than happy to hear any thoughts about it, the pairing isn't fully set in stone, so if you can convince me. I mostly see Ruby and/or Weiss with him, mostly because of how I view them.
