Hollypaw yawned. She didn't want to get up. Checking the time, she held her wrist up, glancing at the clock on her watch. 7:00am. At least she didn't have to go on dawn patrol. Hollypaw attempted to drag herself out of bed, but she flopped back down again.
It had taken five tries for Hollypaw to get up. She crept into Cinderpaw's bedroom, and loomed over her friends sleeping body. Hollypaw nudged her. When Cinderpaw didn't wake up, she pushed her off the bed. Cinderpaw hit the floor, followed by a loud screech.
"WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!" she yelled at Hollypaw, who was trying to look as innocent as possible.
Before Hollypaw could reply, Jaypaw and Briarpaw stormed into the room.
"Whoops..." Hollypaw sniggered.
"Well, now we're all awake, let's all go downstairs. Santa's meant to have brought presents!" Briarpaw said, trying to lighten the mood.
"OK!" Cinderpaw was clearly excited.
The group came to living room door, and Briarpaw pushed it open. Stacks of presents lined the walls. Hollypaw squealed, Cinderpaw leapt into the air, Briarpaw rushed into the room, instinctively looking for her name, and even Jaypaw smiled. Hollypaw started searching for a tag that read 'Holly'. Soon, she came across a massive stack of wrapped gifts. Jaypaw frowned.
"How do you open these?" he had found his pile, and was curiously shaking a box.
"I think I've found a flap, so I'm pulling that," Briarpaw suggested, helpfully.
"Mhm," Jaypaw replied, concentrating on unwrapping the present.
Hollypaw finally broke into her present after several attempts. She pulled out a small rectangular object. It was black on the front , and mint green on the back. On the green part, there was a square, with little circular bumps on them. Hollypaw looked at the others. They had gotten the same thing she had, except the back of Jaypaw's was light blue, the back of Briarpaw's was pink, and the back of Cinderpaw's was pastel purple. Suddenly, Jaypaw's face lit up. He screamed, and dropped the rectangular, glowing item.
"WHAT IS THAT THING?!" he screeched, staggering backwards, and banging into his pile of presents, sending it toppling over, as he fell on his back.
"JAYPAW! Are you ok?" Hollypaw ran to his side.
"Yeah..." he groaned in reply, "look that thing up."
"Right," Briarpaw looked to her book, and read out, "Phone: a device Twolegs use to communicate, and access the Internet. WARNING: Do not get the phone wet. Look after your phone. You will need it lots. More information: The phone will ask you to chose a password. A password is a combination of numbers that only you know. Chose wisely, and don't forget the password. Also, never tell anyone your password."
"Alright, im going to set my phone up," Jaypaw announced.
Hollypaw clicked a button on the side of her phone, and it turned on. It showed a screen telling her to enter a password. Hollypaw typed in the little number pad, ' 8'. She thought that it would be easy to remember.
Hollypaw turned to the rest of her presents, and opened them. She got a lot of makeup and skin care. She got a small stuffed cat. It looked like her. Looking around the room, she noticed that Jaypaw had a stuffed cat too. Cinderpaw had two even tinier hard cats. One looked like her, and the other looked like Brightheart. Briarpaw didn't have a cat that looked like her. She had one that looked like Firestar.
"I have myself..." Jaypaw sounded bemused, and to be fair, you would be if you had just received a stuffed animal version of yourself.
After the 4 of them had finished opening the presents, they gathered around the dining table, whilst Hollypaw poured everyone breakfast.
"So, shall we go outside, and explore?" Briarpaw suggested.
"Yeah! Great idea!" Cinderpaw exclaimed, standing up.
"Umm... its a good idea and all, but what about our tails?" Jaypaw asked.
"Good point!" Hollypaw answered.
Hollypaw wandered off into the hall. She put a hat on, and then flicked her tail up, into the back of her T-shirt. It didn't look like she had a tail at all.
"Hey guys! Put your tail in your shirt," she called to them.
The others came into the hallway with her, their tails tucked away, and put the hat over their ears.
"We're ready!" Cinderpaw told Hollypaw.
"OK," Briarpaw said, hesitantly stepping towards the front door, "Let's go!"
Hollypaw followed Briarpaw out the door, taking in the sight of the Twoleg place.
"Wow!" she whispered underneath her breath.
Jaypaw and Cinderpaw appeared beside her, like Hollypaw, trying to take it all in. 'This is it,' Hollypaw thought, still in awe, 'This is my home. For now at least.'
