In the Class 1-A box, Shoto was looking at his left hand, thinking to himself, "Mom, I tried to push you out of my mind. But then Midoriya pushed down my walls. He was a fool, but well intentioned. Then Fenton, he did the same thing. But unlike Midoriya, he focused more on telling me to be my own hero. Like Mom said. And from the look in his eyes, he seemed to understand what I went through as a kid. Even though he went through something worse than me. So maybe it's time…."
"Todoroki?" Shoto looked up to see Izuku standing next to him. "Sorry, I just…..you looked sad again, like before our match, and…."
Shoto raised his hand, "It's OK. Just thinking to myself. Things that I need to. You did nothing wrong. But I do have a question."
Izuku replied, "Ok, what?"
Shoto asked, "Have you always been this helpful? I mean, instead of trying to win the match against me, you focused on breaking my walls. You were a fool to do so, but a meaningful fool."
Izuku chuckled, "I guess. I just wanted to help you. I guess I wanted to see a look on you that wasn't so serious or sad."
Shoto sighed, "Well, you made a dent, at least. So I guess I should offer my thanks. To you and Fenton. Maybe one day I'll pay you two back in a way."
Down in the tunnels, Danny was walking toward one of the ready rooms when Bakugo blocked his path, "There you are, Fenton. Looks like we'll be fighting each other in the final match."
Danny chuckled, "It seems so."
Bakugo growled, "Listen here, Fenton. I'm gonna be on top of my game. You better bring all you got to this! Just like that Icy-Hot bastard did to your last match! But now it's just between you and me. Focus on the match. That's the only thing I give a damn about. Don't try to pull some crap. Don't hold back. Give me everything you've got. I want everyone to know I beat you at your best."
Bakugo then walked past Danny, with Danny standing still until Bakugo was out of sight. Then Danny let out a deep sigh, "If only he knew. He should know that with great power comes great responsibility. And he should know when some powers can't be used. That guy definitely needs an ego check."
Bakugo grinned as he walked to his ready room, "Let's see him try and use his powers against me when I'm bombing every inch of the stadium. I'll show the world what a champion looks like."
The crowd cheered as Present Mic announced, "Welcome to the final battle of the UA High School Sports Festival! In just a moment here, we'll see which first years come out on top! Yes, it all comes down to this, folks! From the hero course, Danny Fenton! Versus his classmate, Katsuki Bakugo! Now begin!"
Bakugo immediately launched himself towards Danny, who quickly transformed into Phantom and put up a ghost shield just as Bakugo was about to blast him.
"Damn it!" Bakugo shouted as he kept blasting at Phantom's shield, trying to destroy it.
Present Mic narrated, "Bakugo starts by trying to charge and attack Fenton, but Fenton blocks him with a shield. Quick timing! How is Fenton going to fight back?"
Phantom secretly created a duplicate that turned invisible, flew behind Bakugo, and picked him up off the ghost shield and threw him towards the boundary line. Phantom released his shield as the duplicate made himself visible.
Bakugo used his Quirk to stop himself from crossing the line and landed on the ground. He turned to Phantom, "Nice try. But I won't go down that easily. Time to kick it up a notch!"
He sent powerful explosions towards Phantom, who turned intangible and said, "Dude, I can just stay like this and you won't be able to hurt me."
Bakugo growled, "Coward. Fight me like a real man! I told you to give me everything you've got! I know you're holding back. How you have powers that you haven't shown to anybody! Use them on me! So I can beat you at your best!"
Present Mic narrated, "Fenton's holding back? What are these powers that haven't been seen?"
Aizawa commented, "He's actually smart for doing that. Fenton is someone who truly understands his own Quirk inside and out. So if he does have powers that no one has seen, there's a good reason why."
Bakugo growled, "What? Do you think I'm not worthy of your hidden powers? You bastard! I'll tell you what'll happen if you make a fool out of me! I'll kill you! I don't want there to be any doubt that I'm the best student at the festival. Not you! That's only possible if you come at me as hard as you can! There's no point if you don't fight me at full power! Do you wanna win this? Show everyone you're trying to destroy me!"
Phantom turned visible and glared at Bakugo with his ghostly green eyes, "That's all you care about. Winning. You hate to lose, don't you? But let me give you some advice. Even if you beat me, even if you become the number one hero, it doesn't mean you're the best. Especially not with how you're acting now. Your ego and cockiness will be your downfall. That's why someone like Izuku will become a better hero than you."
Izuku was shocked by what Phantom said. Momo whispered, "Watch it, Danny. Bakugo's about to blow his lid."
Bakugo screamed, "I am better than that nerd Deku! And I'll prove it!" He charged at Phantom, preparing his ultimate move. "Come at me with your most powerful attack!"
Phantom just stood there as Bakugo charged at him with tremendous speed and jumped in the air, rotating himself so fast that he created a whirlwind around himself.
Bakugo shouted, "Howitzer Impact!" And he unleashed all of his power right at Phantom.
But Phantom dodged at the last second, avoiding the blast, and was suddenly behind Bakugo. He charged his fists with ghostly ecto energy and blasted Bakugo, both of their attacks causing a dust cloud to surround them so no one could see them.
Present Mic narrated, "Bakugo combined speed and rotation with a huge blast like he used against Uraraka! He turned himself into a human missile! But Fenton dodged and gave Bakugo a taste of his own medicine! So what has become of our top two competitors?"
As the dust settled, Phantom was standing near the edge of the ring while Bakugo was down on the ground outside the boundary.
Midnight was about to announce that Bakugo was out of bounds, but Bakugo stood up and shouted, "No!" He stood up and charged at Phantom, grabbing him by the collar, Phantom doing nothing to stop him. "Hey! You stop messing around! I know that wasn't your ultimate move! I will not accept this loss. You didn't try hard enough. I gave it everything I had! It can't end this way! Why? Why didn't you use your most powerful move against me?"
Midnight was about to use her Quirk to knock out Bakugo, but Phantom held his hand up to her. He leaned in and whispered, "If I did, then this entire stadium would be destroyed, potentially harming every single person here. And some of those people could have ended up dead. Now why would someone who wants to become a pro hero like you want to risk that just to win some festival?" He pulled away as Bakugo was shocked by Phantom's answer. Phantom said in a deep eerie voice, "Stand down."
Bakugo let go of Phantom and slid to the ground shaking in both anger and fear. Phantom transformed back to Danny and nodded to Midnight. She announced, "Bakugo is out of bounds. That means Fenton is the winner!"
The crowd cheered as Present Mic narrated, "Such a commanding win! And with that, the final match is officially over! The first year champion of the UA Sports Festival is Danny Fenton from Class 1-A!"
Jazz, still at home, cheered loudly, "Way to go, little brother!"
Class 1-A cheered for their classmate's win, with Momo whispering, "Good job, Danny."
Danny looked over to the stands where his class was sitting and looked directly at Izuku and nodded. Izuku teared up, "He won for me. I can't believe it. He set aside his own desires to do something for me. What a friend."
He started to cry as Ochaco rubbed his back.
Later on, the awards ceremony started. Midnight announced, "The first year students have completed all of the events for the UA Sports Festival. Now it's time to relax and enjoy the awards ceremony."
Up from under the ground, a platform emerged that had Danny in the first place spot, Bakugo in the second place spot, and both Shoto and Tokoyami in the third place spot. Bakugo was tied to a cement block and had a muzzle over his mouth.
His classmates were horrified. Kirishima said, "He's been going nuts since his loss. Although he was calm after whatever Fenton said to him, but after Fenton left, he just lost control. Midnight had to use her Quirk to calm him down. When he woke up, he got more angry. Man, Bakugo, pull yourself together."
Up on the platform, Tokoyami sighed, "He's acting like a feral animal."
Shoto mumbled, "Imagine what would've happened if he won against me and I was just Fenton, not using my full strength. He would probably act just the same."
Down with Class 1-A, Tsuyu said, "I wonder where Iida is. I thought he would want to see this."
Izuku sighed. He remembered that Tenya told himself, Ochaco, and Momo that he had to go see his brother, Tensei, at the hospital after being attacked by the villain, Stain. Izuku thought, "Ingenium, please be all right. For Iida's sake, you have to be."
Midnight announced, "Now, let's break out the hardware. Of course, there's only one person worthy of distributing the awards."
At the top of the stadium, everyone could hear All Might, in his hero form, laughing. Everyone got excited that the number one hero was here.
All Might jumped down next to Midnight, "I am here with the medals!"
Midnight handed him the medals, "So now that you're here, All Might, why don't you start the presentation?"
All Might took the two third place medals. He walked up to Tokoyami first, "Young Tokoyami. Congratulations! You showed great strength out there."
He placed the medal around Tokoyami's neck, who said, "Your words humble me, sir."
All Might hugged him, "However, you've more training to do if you're going to be able to fight against different kinds of villains. You're not going to be able to rely on your Quirk in every battle you face."
He pulled away as Tokoyami whispered, "Yes, sir."
He took the other third place medal and said to Shoto, "Young Todoroki. Congratulations! You showed what you were truly made of using both of your sides in your fights against Midoroya and Fenton."
Shoto said, "Both Midoriya and Fenton opened my eyes during our matches. Even though I started to feel doubt. I think I understand a little about why you're so interested in Midoriya and in a sense Fenton. I want to be the kind of hero you are, but my path isn't as clear as I thought it was. I have a lot to think about. And I still need to settle some things with someone. Very soon."
All Might replied, "I've never seen this sort of look on your face before. I won't ask for details, but trust yourself. I'm sure you'll work things out."
Shoto nodded, "Right."
All Might walked up to Bakugo, "Now, Young Bakugo, This is a little much." He removed the muzzle that was around Bakugo's mouth. "I know you wanted to come out on top. But you can still learn much from coming in second place."
Bakugo growled, "All Might. I didn't prove I was the best one here. Not after Fenton held back in our fight! I won't accept this!"
All Might sighed, then said, "In a world where we're constantly being compared to one another. There are very few who can keep their eyes focused on the top spot. You're one of them. Please accept this medal. Even if you have to think of it as a scar. Something you'll never forget."
All Might tried to put the medal around Bakugo's neck, but Bakugo shouted, "I don't want that piece of garbage! Get that trash off my neck, you idiot!" So All Might stuffed it into his mouth instead.
Then All Might reached Danny, "Young Fenton. Congratulations." He put the medal around Danny's neck, then whispered, "I'm surprised that this was the route you chose, given what you told me before this festival started. But now I understand that you care for others more than yourself. A lesson that every potential hero needs to learn."
Danny replied, "I learned it the hard way. Others will probably have to as well." He nodded to Bakugo, who growled.
All Might chuckled, "Spoken like a true hero." He then turned to the crowd, "The winners of this year's sports festival! But listen closely. Any of you first years could have ended up standing on these podiums. Think about what you've done today. You've challenged each other, learned, and climbed even closer toward your goals of being pros. I think the next generation of heroes is proving to be our most promising one yet! So I have one more thing to say! I want to hear everyone yell it with me. You know what it is."
"Plus Ultra!" everyone shouted.
Later on, Class 1-A gathered back in their homeroom where Aizawa was waiting, "Nice work. You have the next two days of school off to recuperate. I'm sure the pros who watched the festival will wanna recruit some of you. We'll look over the draft forms and update you when you return. Get some rest. You still have a lot of training."
"Yes, sir!" Class 1-A replied, minus Bakugo, who still held his silver medal in his mouth.
Izuku looked over at Tenya's desk, as it was empty.
Tenya had just arrived at the hospital and ran up to his mother and asked, "How is Tensei doing?"
His mother sighed, but then Tenya ran into Tensei's hospital room shouting, "Brother!"
His mother whispered, "Keep your voice down and put on a mask!"
Tenya did so and walked up to Tensei's bedside, where his doctor said, "The anesthesia's worn off, but he's still in and out. If the surgery had happened any later, I don't know if he would have made it."
Tensei opened his eyes, "Little brother. Is that you?"
Tenya replied, "Tensei, you're gonna be fine!"
Tensei sighed, "Sorry. I'm supposed to be someone you can look up to and respect, but look at me. Tenya, little brother, I'm so sorry. I failed you."
Tenya cried, "Tensei!"
When Danny got home, Jazz ran up to him and gave him a big hug, congratulating him.
Izuku's mom did the same when Izuku got home. Izuku did ask Danny what he said to Bakugo to calm him down, but Danny said he'll tell him another day. His mother made him a big dinner to celebrate.
Ochaco returned home and was surprised by her parents, as she thought they would have been at work, but they came home to surprise her.
The next day, Bakugo woke up at noon and shouted, "Die! Stupid weakling mouth germs!" He brushed his teeth in anger.
His mother shouted, "Katsuki, you can't wake up at noon and start yelling!"
Over at Shoto's house, his sister, Fuyumi, asked, "Shoto, where are you going?"
"The hospital," Shoto answered.
"What?" Fuyumi was shocked. "Hold on, why? You can't just visit. Not without telling Dad, right?"
"Whatever," Shoto replied as he opened the front door.
"But why go now?" Fuyumi asked. "Why see her after all this time?"
Shoto just said, "I'll be back." And he left.
He arrived at the hospital and was directed to his mother's room. He stood outside her door and thought, "Ever since that day, I thought the sight of me would cause my mother nothing but pain. So I never visited. But we will always be bound to each other. By blood. By our history with my father. That's why if I'm ever going to use this body and these powers to become a hero, if I'm going to give it everything I have, I need to see her. Fenton was right. At least I still have my parents. My mother. There's so much we need to talk about. I'll rescue her from this place. No matter what. That's my first step to getting back on track."
He opened the door and walked into his mother's room. "Hello, Mom." His mother turned to him and to his surprise, she smiled.
