Don't worry my little kit
You will be safe, we will both see to that
Even if we can't be there in person
I believe I can trust you
To protect
"My little rose bundle."
As Ruby was falling off the cliff, the look on the man's face as he jumped after her, ready to attack her again with his scorpion tail, would haunt her nightmares. Her thoughts drifted to all her new friends, causing her tears to sting all the more, the pain on her hip where her ammunition bag was before the assassin's first strike did not help there.
Ruby grabbed her scythe with both hands, ready to fight to the bitter end, even if she felt the bitter cold grasp of death coming for her…
Or maybe that was the large spike of ice that stabbed from the cliffside, attempting to impale her pursuer. Ruby had all of a second to watch as the faunus shifted his weight, dodging the attack, before he stabbed it with his tail to give him an anchor to allow him to avoid the bullets from the others. Next thing to happen however, caught everyone off guard, as someone swooped by and grabbed Ruby out of the air.
Taking a peek at the guy, she found Naruto, flying with her in his arms. His black bandages were still around his eyes, the blood from whatever happened earlier leaking down his cheeks. The bandages being the only clothing other than his pants and footwear that he still wore, with him having left his shirt, jacket, and his staff back with the others.
The biggest change of the boy however, was the fact that he had white angelic wings, his tail and ears nowhere to be seen. "Dove."
Ruby gave a confused mumble as Naruto smiled at her. "My wings, they are a dove's. I can explain later, but right now, I have to focus."
Naruto hugged Ruby closer to his chest as he dropped further down, spreading his wings as he swooped away from several nevermore that decided to attack. The scorpion faunus was riding on the back of a larger one, not as big as the one she and her friends just got done killing, but big enough the man could ride it and be ready to stab them when he got close enough.
Ruby, ignoring how close she was to the bare chest of a rather handsome young man that just saved her life, tried to think of anything that could help them out. She was out of ammo, and couldn't just take a swing behind them, seeing as she didn't want to cut off Naruto's wings.
Ruby was cut off from her thoughts, as two small birds flew past them towards the man. Sticking her head up to see what was happening after the two little birds let out battle cries, before both changed into humans. Her uncle Qrow, Harbinger midswing in scythe form, a woman that looked so much like Yang, wielding a sword. The dozens of nevermore of varied sizes in the flock chasing them already cut down to a mere couple, and the faunus assassin.
Ruby smiled as her new tears were from relief.
Qrow didn't turn back to look at Ruby, nor did he really pay much attention to his sister to his side. His fully sober glare was dead set on the man jumping back as he backhanded the head from the final nevermore that was chasing Ruby.
As Raven cut below them, opening a portal, both of them transformed back into birds to easily change their momentum and fly through it. As much as Qrow wanted nothing more than to yell at his sister, the fact that she had shown up to watch Yang's initiation, as well as step in to protect Ruby, had him trusting her like the good old days.
The combined anger they held for each other for personal reasons, was nothing when compared to the anger either alone held for the man before them. The man that turned a simple scout and destroy mission, a dime a dozen mission that any hunter/huntress should have easily handled, into a trap that cost their closest friend her life.
This was the man that murdered Summer.
Naruto tried to use his sight to view what was happening, but the moment he tried, he saw nothing. The battle behind him was too fast paced for him to be able to see anything, leaving him to just continue to look forward from himself, guiding his flight towards land, where Ruby could guide him to their friends. If they could avoid the grimm still coming for them.
There were several reactions that were going on with the young adults that were watching the fight, and the most frightening thing about it, was that they weren't comfortable using their bullets to help any longer, with how fast paced the fight was going, especially as the Yang look-a-like kept opening portals to give them an unpredictable angle of attacks.
The gunners were still keeping their eyes on anything they could shoot to provide help to the veteran fighters, or to help Naruto and Ruby. Seeing as there were a couple nevermore that continued to fly at their friends, as well as some grimm that kept trying to join the main battle, even as boarbatusks rolled off the cliffside as suicide bullets, or the creepers that jumped out of the mountain itself. Each of them were dodged, if not cut in half dismissively.
The two veterans were easily identified by Yang, Qrow and Raven Branwen, her uncle and mother. They fought like a dream team, Raven using her portals to give her or Qrow easy access to flanking the faunus, or opening one so a grimm fell into it and dropped on her enemy's head.
The battle was getting neither side anywhere, as the two adults were keeping the faunus from chasing after the younger two, but that didn't stop them from being attacked from other forces of the grimm that were apparently helping the scorpion guy. What kind of guy had an army of grimm to help him?
Jaune caught them off guard as he gave a shrill whistle by sticking his fingers into his mouth. Causing Naruto to jolt slightly, taking a diving aileron roll, spreading his wings and flying straight for them.
The moment the two arrived, Yang was finally able to be more helpful, loading up some buckshots, before she started to unload into the flock of grimm, followed by Nora and her heart grenades. Pulling the two to the center of the group, Ruby started to check over Naruto as he caught his breath, and cringed and gasped in pain whenever his wings brushed against something.
The other seven of their group surrounded them and kept up a defense, which was needed as several more grimm began to leave the forest in an attempt to get at them.
The dozen or so beowolves, and the several Ursa that came rushing out were suddenly lifted and tossed over the cliffside, as Glynda Goodwitch stepped forward and nodded at the group. "Don't worry about this affecting your grades. Callows' appearance has changed things."
While happy to hear that, they were more concerned about the fact that someone so dangerous, the teachers disregarded their own rules, had tried to kill their friend.
Naruto stood up. "That is the guy that murdered my parents. I also believe he killed the woman that gave me my staff."
Glynda nodded. "Not surprising. That man is a deranged one, he hunts anyone his boss sends him after, and your sight semblance is something that she would want. Either as her own, or no ones."
As Glynda turned her attention towards the fight between scorpion and birds, it finally stopped being an airborne battle, as Qrow and Raven landed a hit that sent Tyrian to the ground. Qrow and Raven both landing soon after, ready to give the man more of a fight, as he began to laugh. "Wow, never knew I would be worth so much attention. I guess you're still pissed at me offing your bitch."
Qrow shouted as he rushed forward, closely followed by Raven, but before either could reach him, a large beringel dropped down. Hearing the beringel's roar, as it smacked the two back, Naruto groaned. "Is that damn thing still hunting me? I caused the damn thing to fall into a ravine, a mineshaft that was set to explode, I tricked it into being fuckin eaten by an ancient blind worm. How is it still here!?"
Tyrian laughed as he turned to look at the kids. "My goddess will be happy to know that two of her targets are being hidden in your little school."
The kids were caught off guard as they heard Ozpin from behind them. "Let your goddess know, I will not allow any of you to get this close again."
Before anyone could even get ready for a fight, Ozpin swung his cane, releasing a green energy wave, slicing the beringel in half, almost missing it as Tyrian was swallowed by a king taijitu and taken away underground.
Ozpin sighed as he saw this, Qrow shouting in rage, Raven snarling. Ozpin turned to the children, "you should all go finish your initiation. Our intervening here won't count against you, due to the special circumstances, but you must still complete it."
Yang was shouting as she spoke up, wanting answers. "Are you expecting me to just ignore this? My mother just appeared out of nowhere, after all I have done to find her, she just pops up out of nowhere. And what was that guy talking about when he said something about Summer being Qrow's girl? I want answers! I want to talk to you!... I just want to know… is that too much?"
Yang ended up quieting down as she got to her last words, doing her best to hold in her tears.
Raven sighed as she looked back at her daughter. "Callows' words shouldn't concern you."
The woman opened a portal as she stepped through, before it closed just before Qrow reached it, causing the man to shout in rage once again. Ozpin pulled out and tossed a bottle of pills towards Ruby. "Pain pills, Naruto's wings will be extremely sore from his flight. Until he has the aura needed to shift back at least."
Naruto flinched away from the man, as he also tossed a bottle of water for Ruby to catch as well. "Please, take care of him, winged faunus tend to have trouble when they carry passengers of any weight."
None of the group had anything to really say, taking the dismissal as it was, and pulling Naruto and Yang along, Pyrrha grabbing Naruto's clothes and staff as they passed them by. Qrow turned to Ozpin as he watched the kids leave. "That bastard should have kept his mouth shut, now Yang is suspecting something, and with how Raven was just here, there are going to be more questions than we want to answer."
Glynda remained silent, not knowing what Qrow was talking about, but Ozpin nodded. "Maybe you can come clean, and answer for more than just Raven's departure, but your own as well."
Qrow glared at the headmaster. "Mind your own business Oz, this is a family matter, and it will stay that way. I already made my mistakes and have come to terms with having lost that right."
Ozpin sighed. "I am still under the impression that the right to decide whether you lose that right, belongs to Miss Rose. But I will remain silent."
Naruto shifted in discomfort. While he didn't really trust the headmaster, at least he was nice enough to give him something for the pain he felt in his shoulder blades. "Having wings sucks."
Everyone was trying their best to let the boy, as well as the two sisters, have some silence to think. Naruto's words however, caused them to buckle under the curiosity. Blake in particular. "How did you swap to being a dove faunus, rather than a fox faunus. Doing so should be impossible, you lost both your ears and tail, and now have wings. You might have been able to hide wings under your jacket, but you no longer have your fox features."
Blake was stopped from going on what could have only been an existential crises fueled rant, when Nora threw an arm around her shoulders. "Let the guy speak, none of us will ever know unless you calm down."
Naruto chuckled as he did his best to stretch his wings, hoping to get the stiffness from them. "I guess I really don't have a choice. How much do you know about the story of Robin Hood?"
Giving them a moment to consider his question, Ruby answered with some enthusiasm. "Robin Hood was a rogue that stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He was a man of the people who saw the rich abusing their wealth, and getting away with it because the law enforcers were in their back pocket. So our daring rogue took the law into his own hands, and stole the wealth from them, sharing it between the poor so they could afford food and shelter."
Naruto smiled at the girl's enthusiasm. "Well, do any of you know about his semblance?"
Weiss was the one to answer this. "No one does, Robin Hood has gone on record as someone who never used it. Some speculated that it was the ability to turn invisible, or possibly something to do with marksmanship, his weapon of choice being the bow, while others still speculate it was possible he was able to change his appearance to disguise himself as someone else. No one has gone on record to say what it was."
Everyone looked at Naruto expectantly as the boy chuckled. "His semblance has come to be known by his own name. The ability to take power, and give it to another. The Hood Semblance, named after him, passed from master to apprentice, allows one to take a semblance from someone, and give it to someone else. My mother was the last known wielder of it, and now, myself."
Naruto smiled sadly as he gripped his staff nervously. "My mother used it to give my father a more battle oriented semblance, before taking his vision semblance. As he fought Tyrian, my mother took me away, using her semblance, she passed both of them to me. I hold the vision, as well as the hood semblance, and the duty to keep them from those that seek to abuse them."
"That is a lot of responsibility, good thing you have us now."
Naruto jolted as he heard Ruby's words. Having not expected them, he wound up coming to a complete stop, just as they reached the cliffside they were launched from. Ruby being pulled to a stop with him as her hand never let go of his arm. "With the power to take your semblance, you would still trust me? No one has continued to trust me after they discovered it before."
Ruby pouted as Naruto tried to shy away, her grip on his arm being the only thing keeping him from doing so. Yang decided she would speak up, not only to distract herself from her previous issues, but to learn more about her friend. "I believe we can agree that you aren't going to go stealing our semblances to give to the poor anytime soon, so there isn't any worry. Now, what gave you the ability to swap your foxy features, for angelic features? Is that your original semblance?"
"No, my original semblance was 'amplify'. I can use my aura to feed someone else's semblance and amplify it to do more than normal."
Nora gasped, "what about with my electrokinesis? Whenever I am hit with electricity, I can channel it, and even use it to magnify my strength."
"Probably allow you to generate more power with less electricity. But my personal semblance is a bit complicated right now, I am using it in conjunction with another semblance I have right now, to keep someone safe from grimm. Or, her corpse at least. After promising her something, I decided to protect what was left of her from being torn apart by the grim."
Pyrrha was the one to question, after looking around and ensuring there was still no one around. "We might not have much time left to talk, unless you want to share with more people than just us. But what was the promise you made? Maybe we can help."
Naruto smiled. "I promised to use my vision to watch over, and give her semblance, to her little Rose Bundle."
Ruby blinked, as she giggled. "That sounds like the nickname my mom called me, before she left for her last mission, about ten years ago."
"That is exactly what she called you, Rubes. Do you remember her name, Naruto?"
Yang was resisting the urge to grab Naruto by his shirt, Ruby's tight hold on his arm being the only indication of her own nerves. Naruto nodded. "She had taken cover in a cave, hoping to avoid Tyrian, after what she said was an endless gauntlet of grimm. She was busy fighting an army before that guy attacked her from what I could make out. She sounded exhausted when we talked, and she introduced herself as Summer, and I gave her my story."
Naruto decided to continue his story, despite Ruby and Yang gasping over the name. "After finding out what my mother did to protect me, she wanted to do the same for her own daughter, and asked me to give it to her, in exchange, she handed me a sapling. She told me that she grew the sapling with the use of her eyes, holding what power was left in it. It could bypass the defenses of the grimm, and all she asked was that I give her a chance to protect her little Rose Bundle."
Naruto continued before anyone was able to interrupt him. "So I took the sapling, her semblance, and once I stepped from the cave, I used my semblance, combined with another that I took from someone else, and sealed the cave away from the grimm, hopefully preserving her body to retrieve when I can find some help to retrieve it."
"Well, I know something I am going to do then. As soon as you hand over her semblance."
Each of the kids turned in surprise to find Qrow glaring at the boy. "Alright kid, cough it up, and tell me where Summer's body is, before I get more frustrated with what you've already done."
Weiss scoffed at the man. "Yes, because a blind person can just explain every detail about where he was ten years ago. Be serious, you buffoon."
Qrow's glare shifted a bit to her, before going back to the boy. Before the man could say anything else, another voice interrupted him. "I failed to save her when it mattered most. When I heard of her situation, I couldn't find her, my semblance incapable of bringing me to her."
As Raven jumped from the branches of the tree, she glared at Qrow, before turning back towards Naruto. "If you used this semblance to hide Summer from the grimm, and her, it must be what is blocking me from using my semblance to reach her. If you turn it off, I can immediately go to her, and bring her back."
Naruto shifted away from the two adults, not knowing if he could trust them. Yang stepped in front of him. "Well, maybe if you two actually wanted to give us some answers, we might convince him to help you out."
Raven narrowed her eyes, as Qrow spoke up. "Yang, now is not the time for any of this crap. The boy will be coming with us, and he is going to be answering some questions, along with doing as we say. Are you seriously going to just let him leave Summer's body out in the middle of nowhere?"
Yang growled as she stomped the ground, activating her gauntlets. "Summer's body is fine where it is, because I know I can trust Naruto to keep it that way, you however."
Qrow squawked in shock as he flinched as if she had physically smacked him. Raven however, had absolutely nothing to lose, but closure to gain. "What do you want to know?"
Qrow looked at Raven in shock. "Seriously? You are actually willing to bargain now, and not back then when the rest of us tried to talk with you when you left!?"
Raven scoffed at her brother. "My daughter is showing more spine than I thought she would have, raised by someone as soft as Taiyang. I am sure one of your questions is why I left, so let me save you the trouble of asking. Our tribe needed a leader, Qrow chickened out and remained here, and when I tried to bring you with me, Qrow and Tai fought tooth and nail to keep you from me. If I tried harder, you would have gotten hurt. Summer was also stronger than me and was watching over you and Ruby at the time."
Yang blinked. "So, dad and Summer had Ruby before you left?"
Raven scoffed, before she opened a portal, causing Qrow to flop through it instead of attacking her to shut her up. Yang heard Tai shouting at Qrow before the portal closed. "I was never the homemaker kind of girl. Tai and I hooked up, and me and him stopped missions when I got pregnant and gave birth to you. He and Summer were left to go on missions to bring home the bacon as the phrase goes. They got real close."
Ruby and Yang both stared in shock. The rest of their group felt rather awkward standing there with them, but none wanted to interrupt, or just ditch them. You never know when a fight will break out, and they didn't know or trust this woman.
Raven chuckled. "Tai and Summer never hooked up, but he and I were both caught off guard when the two of them came home with Summer pregnant. And so, because Tai had gotten that job at Signal, and Summer was pregnant, me and Qrow were off doing missions."
"And you just decided to leave one day?"
Raven chuckled at her daughter's question. "Of course not, Ozpin had decided to let us in on his little secret war, and I decided that he was just going to get us all killed. My team disagreed with me, and so, I was alone when I left. My team tried to stop me, but only succeeded in keeping me from taking you with me. But I never stopped using my semblance to keep an eye on you, and Tai failed miserably in making you strong. You would have been so much better if I had taken you to join me in the tribe."
As Yang was getting her answers, Ruby was just outright confused. "Why would Qrow and Tai lie to me?"
Raven decided to answer. "I don't really know about early on, but he was rather adamant about finding me, while Summer decided to help him as Tai watched over you both. The only reason Summer was caught out on that mission, was because she was looking for me. She had been the only person here that I respected."
Raven stopped for a second, to take a deep breath. "My best friend, a sister that I even offered to bring into the tribe. But her hero complex caused her to stay and help Ozpin with his losing battle. I have felt absolutely terrible from the moment I was no longer able to find her with my semblance. So, if you're willing to just let me retrieve what is left of her, that would be great."
Naruto nodded. "The moment I release it, you will have to be fast, there is no other defense there."
Raven actually smiled at the boy, "just hurry it up boy."
As the woman jumped through a new portal, Yang groaned over everything she just learned. Ruby was pretty much unresponsive as she hid her face in Naruto's arm, not really registering the fact that she was doing all this to a boy that was shirtless.
As the others stepped forward, trying to give some support to the two girls, Yang decided to turn her interrogation back towards her fellow blond. Anything to avoid this awkward situation. "So, foxy-bird, back to your explanation."
Naruto shifted slightly, as Ruby spoke up before he could. "What was all that about giving me my mom's semblance?"
Naruto sighed. "There are two ways to take a semblance, one is painful, the other isn't. But to give a semblance, we must create a connection between us, physically. My mother used lip contact."
Ruby blushed as Yang chuckled. "So, basically, Summs just told you to go and smooch Ruby?"
Yang found that to be rather funny, even as Ruby hid away in her hood. Weiss on the other hand was reaching the end of her patience. "Semblances are a part of the soul, so how can you take them painlessly?"
Naruto sighed. "Aura and semblances are complicated as it is, no one really knows everything about them. But from what I can understand of them, aura is an energy that is generated from our souls, not our souls themselves, but just a byproduct. Aura was an adaptation we made to protect ourselves from grimm, semblances were an adaptation we caused, with our desire to fight back against them."
"A semblance is just a bundle of the energy our souls generate, not our souls themselves, so when I take a semblance, it is like cutting out a knot from a bunch of string. Doing it delicately, such as if I were to kiss you, I take the minimum. But I can always just reach in and pull the knot out, ripping who knows how much out along with the knot. Doing it the hard way can really damage you, but doing it the delicate way, you could recover."
"I have done it the hard way twice, taking two semblances from the men that took my eyes."
"Well, Mister Uzumaki, as much as I would enjoy hearing more stories, I do believe you need to get to the nurse's office, to change out your bandages. I do believe we do have the black bandages as well, so don't fret about that."
The teens turned to see Ozpin, Jaune being the only one able to actually ask the question. "Is it normal for people to eavesdrop on everyone here?"
Pyrrha, while finding the face Jaune made when confused by something adorable, decided to answer him. "No Jaune, it is still considered rude."
Ozpin nodded. "Yes, it really is. I don't have much of a defense, other than you could have waited to speak about this when you got your rooms, but I didn't listen for very long. Just long enough to let Mister Uzumaki finish what he was saying, before I figured I would remind you all of the time. We still have team placements later, so please try and be punctual."
Hey everybody, I am in a conundrum here.
Summer Rose, alive, or dead. I can work with either, there will be some extra scenes added whichever way the vote rolls, but she will make some appearances later if you all want me to let her live. There will be more explanations next chapter, but depending on the vote, some answers will be different. So, since I am being indecisive, I figured I would ask people that like this story their opinion.
