As Above, So Below

1994 Prison World

"Kai… Please…"

Silk sheets rub against her skin. A cool breeze caresses her bare breasts. Strong arms hold her thighs down and apart, and a warm, relentless tongue licks her weeping clit.

She is dying. He is going to kill her.

She tells him so, between sobs of his name, and his shoulders shake with greedy laughter. It's her fifth orgasm since she was woken up by his mouth between her legs, her hands tied to the bedpost, and he's not yet done with her.

Perhaps she died when she fell into that pool in Nova Scotia, she thinks wildly. And this prison world is her heaven and hell.

After what feels like hours of hovering on that cliff, her world whitening and shrinking at the edges of pleasure, but not being allowed to fall off, he finally, finally lifts his head up to lick his way up her body. Her nightshirt is still on, the fabric torture against her pebbled nipples, and she feels his teeth work her buttons open. He pauses when he reached her breast, first tonguing her painfully aroused nipple through the cotton, then pulling it into his mouth.

"Kai… Please…"

She didn't even know what she was begging for anymore. For him to stop, for him to continue. For him to get her off or fuck her or kill her.

For him.

"You're mine," he murmured against her nipple, his words and breath making it harden impossibly further. His body shifts against hers. She feels his hard cock brush against her entrance, and then they both sigh when he slips in, her walls immediately pulling him inside. "I am never letting you go."

Now

Liv hadn't seen Kai in over week, enough time to wonder if he was still alive and have conflicting thoughts about it.

On the one hand, good riddance to her psychopath of a brother. On the other hand…

The Merge.

She checked on Jo occasionally, but her older sister still remained comatose. She tried discreetly to find out if the coven - her father, Luke - knew anything about Jo's self-inflicted spell; and realized, to her shock, that she was completely shut out of coven intelligence.

"What the heck, Luke?" she snapped at her twin when she called him to confront him. It was late evening on campus, and she was studying in her dorm.

"You're on indefinite probation," her brother said coolly.

"This is bullshit. I told you what was going on with Bonnie and the Salvatores."

"After I already knew most of it. Be thankful that this wasn't worse for you."

He cut the call and she threw her phone across her room with a curse.

On its way to smash against the wall, it froze.

First a tan hand gripping the phone, then the rest of Kai materialized out of thin air. "Tweedledum and Tweedledee not getting along?"

Liv jumped to her feet. Or rather, she tried to, but got tangled with her desk chair, her laptop cord, and the half-finished box of pizza she'd been holding in her lap, and fell on the floor in a heap.

Kai burst out laughing.

He dropped the phone at her desk, picked up the last slice of pizza from the floor, and made himself comfortable on the bed.

"What the hell, Kai?" she snapped, struggling to her feet. "Where have you been?"

"Busy working on a plan to save my baby sibs from being glued to each other for the rest of their lives."

"How sweet of you," Liv said sarcastically.

"I know. But I don't want to hog all the fun. I have a job for you."

She stiffened. "What?"

"Love the enthusiasm, little sis," he snarked through a mouthful of pizza. "It's a walk in the park. I need you to pick up a parcel for me."

She waited. When he just kept chewing, she prompted. "And?"

"The package is meant for one Ms. Bennett." He had pulled out his phone, so he didn't meet her sharp gaze. "It's coming in a few days at two pm. You will intercept it with your Gemini charms."

"What's in the package?"

He chuckled at that.

Jerk.

"Is she going to expect it? Will I have to do anything to her to get her out of the way?"

Kai looked up then, his eyes flashed a warning. "No, she's not. The only thing you have to do is show up."

"What happens if she shows up for the package?"

"We'll make sure she's somewhere else. Here. Get her to be here at the same time, and I'll do the rest."

"What are you going to do to her?" She and Bonnie might have a complicated relationship, but she wasn't OK to let Kai hurt the younger girl.

Kai was thumbing through his phone again. "I'll distract her." When Liv hesitated, he drawled, "Relax, Livvie Poo. I'm not going to hurt a hair on her precious head."

There was something about the way he said it…

"One last thing. The package is For My Eyes Only. If you peek, I'll know and you'll regret it." His words were mild, but they sent a shiver up her spine. He swiped his phone closed. "When you collect it, you'll send it where I just texted you."

On cue, her phone pinged.

"Send it? Shouldn't I bring it to you?"

"I won't be around."

"Where are you going now?"

He didn't deign to reply. He'd finished her pizza, and he rubbed his hands together, leaving crumbs in her bed. "That's about it. Any questions?"

"No," she said slowly. "I understand what I have to do."

Bonnie rapped her fingers sharply on the counter. Liv looked up from her careful sweeping of the floor, and blinked. She pulled off her earphones. "We're closed."

"Very funny," Bonnie said. She sat on the bar stool, and waited until the other girl walked up to her, a wary expression on her face. "You and I need to talk about your brother."

"If this is about me telling Luke about the Salvatores, I already said"

"I mean your other brother. Kai."

For the first time, Bonnie realized that Liv had the same gray-blue shade as her oldest brother's. And they could be just as cold.

"It's too early to be high, BB," Liv muttered.

"Your car was on the road that night."

"What night?" Liv asked, bored, as if she was humoring Bonnie.

"The night that the Salvatores tried to kidnap me. The night I saw Kai."

And had sex with him against a tree.

Bonnie pressed her knees together, and hardened her voice. "Don't bother denying it," she said, raising her voice over Liv's sneering denials. "Or this will go worse for you."

Liv glared at her, all pretense at aloofness gone. "What are you going to do, BB? Tell my father? Tell Luke? Make him hate me even more than he already does?"

Bonnie's anger morphed into exhaustion. "I've never tried to come between you and Luke."

"You didn't have to try."

There was a painful silence, filled with years of low-simmering resentment.

Bonnie sighed. "Liv, whatever you feel about me, you can't work with Kai."

She didn't deny it. But she didn't admit it either.

"He's dangerous. He'll hurt you. He's… hurt me."

"How did he hurt you, Bonnie?" Liv asked, a sudden glint in her eyes. "What exactly happened between the two of you in 1994?"

Bonnie felt her face warm. "I told the coven everything."

"Did you really? Because even back then, I thought you were hiding something."

Bonnie tried to take back control of the conversation before it slipped from her. "Don't try to derail this, Liv. It doesn't take a genius to know why you're working with Kai. The Merge, right?" Liv's sudden flinch was all the confirmation Bonnie needed. "You help him find Jo, and he merges with her and gets you and Luke off the hook."

It wasn't a question, and Liv's silence was the only answer Bonnie needed. She sucked in a breath. "You're going to screw over your own sister?"

"Why not?" Liv spat. "She got 20 years to live, 20 years longer than Luke and I will get. That's more than fair."

"Liv-"

"There was a time when this was what you wanted as well," Liv said, accusingly. "You also looked for a way to get us out of the Merge."

Yes, there was a time when Liv's obsession with thwarting her destiny had infected Bonnie. That obsession had led Bonnie to Expression. To Nova Scotia. To death. To the Prison World.

To Kai.

"Liv-" Bonnie pressed her fingers over her nose, fighting back a headache. "Liv-"

"I can't talk here," Liv said sharply. She shook the broom she still held. "I'm working. Come over to my dorm at two. Ditch Melissa and Faye. I don't want an audience for this."

"They're not here now, are they?" Bonnie snapped.

It was Liv's turn to press a frustrated hand to her face. "Just go, before my boss shows up and fires me. Not all of us have a double trust fund to dip from."

The bolt of anger was so strong, that the spark shot from Bonnie's hand to Liv's wrist before she realized she was doing it.

Liv dropped her broom with a shriek, and wrung her hand in pain. "The hell, Bonnie!"

"I'd trade that double trust fund for my family any day."

"Why would you when you could just steal my own family?"

The two witches glared at each other. One part of Bonnie's brain asked her to calm down, she needed to get Liv on her side - without involving the coven just yet - not to antagonize her.

The other part of Bonnie's brain told her to hex Liv to the other side of campus.

It was Liv that took a step back, her eyes casting to the floor. "Let's just talk later," she muttered.

"If you're not in your room when I get there, I'm going to your father." It wasn't an empty threat. "And whatever must have happened after Nova Scotia will be nothing compared to what he'll do to you after he hears what I have to say."

She felt Liv's eyes boring into her back as she walked out of the bar. The other girl probably hated her for that reminder - of who came first to Joshua Parker.

Let her.

Melissa and Faye had wanted to come and it had taken a lot to talk them out of it. They had squeezed out some details from Bonnie. She wasn't ready to tell anyone everything. But it was enough to make them worried, and want to hover.

Bonnie didn't need that now. What she needed was answers.

Bonnie showed up at Liv's door at five minutes past two and rapped at it.

It swung open.

"I'm here. Now tell me-"

She felt him a half-second before she registered the empty space in front of her. Before she spun around, and saw him leaning against the door that he'd shut behind him.

Her eyes scanned the room desperately, and she dashed towards the window.

He caught her, his arms wrapping around her waist, and pulled her back. "Oh no, you don't." His breath was warm in her ear.

She fought against a shudder. Against the way her body felt hot and cold as his warm, muscular front folded around her soft, curvy back.

"Let me go," she hissed, squirming. She pushed a hex into his arm where it locked around her waist.

He chuckled, easily siphoning the magic with his skin. The arm around her waist pulled her tighter against him, and she felt his body reacting to her movements. She stopped struggling.

"Don't stop on my account," he mock-whined. He pressed his face into the skin between her jaw and her shoulder, and inhaled heavily.

"You killed Katherine Pierce," she said, desperately trying to distract herself from the delicious feel of his five o'clock shadow scratching her skin.

"She had it long coming," he murmured, and his teeth nipped her earlobe. It wasn't hard, but it was sharp enough to make her jump in his arms.

He chuckled, and the hand on her waist snaked up under her shirt. Her breast all but poured into his warm fingers, and she moaned.

His laugh cut off, and in one quick, dazed movement, he spun her around in his arms and kissed her.

Oh god , she thought, despairingly as his hot mouth slanted over her own, his tongue licked the seam of her lips, then plunged in when she gasped. His hands were on her ass now, pulling her against him, as he bowed her back, so that their hips banged together and his hardness brushed against that throbbing part of her.

She couldn't breathe… She couldn't think…

"Kai… please…" She managed when he broke their kiss. But his mouth just moved back to her neck, and he was walking her, his hips knocking against hers, making her wetter with each contact, until she felt something hard behind her knees and she was falling, landing on the bed.

He fell with her, catching himself at the last moment by his elbows and knees so he hovered, enveloping her.

She gulped at the sight of his face. His eyes were black, pupils shot through. The lines of his face were stark with hunger.

"Kai…" Her hands reached for his shoulders, feeling the corded muscles of his upper arms. She didn't even know what she was asking for.

His hands were on her waist, and he made quick work of her skirt buckles. Then his hands were on her thighs, palming her flesh with a grip that was both punishing and caressing. He was looking at her underwear, the purple lace panties, and his mouth parted, panting.

"Kai…"

He glanced at her again, and her voice dried at the look on his face. "Fuck, Bonnie."

In one movement, he ripped off the lace, and his mouth was on her clit.

She screamed, at that first, harsh, long lick. Her legs jerked, and he wrapped his arms around them, pulling her knees over his shoulder and reaching with one hand to keep her waist on the bed. He paused his licking to inhale sharply, breathing her in, growling softly. "You're mine."

Oh god Oh god.

It was too much. It had been so long and it was too much. "Kai!"

He pushed her harder into the bed with his weight, his fingers and mouth greedily feasting on her. In a haze, her mind flashed back to 1994, and the first time he'd done this to her.

Like before, there was nothing she could do but lie back and take it.

For packages like this, the courier agent had to send a message ahead to the recipient. This client asked to meet in front of the campus residence. When his van rolled to a stop in the 5-minute parking zone, she was waiting by the front door. He did a double take as he walked to her - even in loose jeans and an oversized hoodie, she was strikingly attractive.

"Ms Bonnie Bennett?"

She reached for the package, and he smiled half-apologetically. "I have to confirm your ID."

"Of course," she said, smiling brightly - wow, she was cute - and dug into her pocket for a wallet.

He checked her face - gorgeous brown-skin, touchable brown curls, traffic-stopping green eyes - against the picture on the ID's and gave her the digital pad to sign.

"Nice weather we're having," he said, figuring what the hell, shoot your shot. He never did this but damn, he'd kick himself if he didn't even try.

Her smile dimmed and she side-eyed him as she handed the pad. "It's the same weather we've had all week." her voice was cool.

Burn . He grinned ruefully as he handed over the thick manilla envelope.

As he backed his van out of the 5-minute parking slot, he checked his rear view mirror for safety and another glimpse at the unexpectedly hot client. Unfortunately, she must have already gone in. Another girl was at the door now - tall, white, with long blonde curls. Today must have been laundry day or something in their residence, because she also wore similar loose jeans and hoodie.

Very similar.

That's odd , he thought to himself, as he drove off.

The blonde girl had also been holding a very similar manilla envelope in her hand. If he didn't know any better, he could have sworn that it was the same girl.

Liv found an empty stall, locked it, warded it for extra measure, then sat on the felled seat and stared at the manilla envelope in her hand.

She got the idea of intercepting the courier at the front door while she was doing the glamor spell in Bonnie's room. Collecting it a few minutes earlier than Kai expected meant Liv had a few minutes to open the envelope and check its contents.

Are you crazy? A frightened voice in her head whispered, as she used precise magick to peel the lip of the envelope apart. He told you not to open it, not to even try to see what's inside. If he finds out you disobeyed him…

But the fake conversation with Bonnie had riled her up more than she realized. She couldn't keep letting Kai push her around. If there was anything she could use to even the balance of their so-called partnership, she had to find it. And there was something about Kai and Bonnie Bennett… If he was going to have a weakness, it would be the younger girl.

He won't be the first man in her family to lose his mind over precious little Bonnie, Liv thought bitterly.

She opened the envelope, and quickly, before she lost her nerve, she pulled out its contents.

It was just two items. A letter written in cursive on parchment paper.

And a flashdrive.

After she read the letter, and realized what she would find in the flashdrive, Liv felt a wave of nausea hit her.

It was convenient, she thought, as she hurled out the contents of her half-bagel and coffee, that she was near a toilet.

Holy shit holy shit holy shit.

A few minutes later, she stumbled out of the stall empty-handed, shaking and shivering. She turned on the tap at the communal sink, and clung to the porcelain, dizzy.

A woman was at the air dryer, wringing her hands. She looked up at Liv, then did a double take. "You OK?"

Liv looked at her reflection. Her eyes were bloodshot in her pale face. "No," she said hoarsely.

"Should I call for help?" the woman asked, coming closer.

Liv laughed, bitterly. "You can't help me." She splashed her face with water, rinsed the bile out of her mouth. "No one can."

Why did I look? What can I do with this? If they ever find out I know…

"If you're in trouble-"

"Don't you have anything better to do than poking your nose in other people's business?" Liv snapped, leaning over the sink. "Get lost."

There was a huff of disapproval, then the sound of angry footsteps, and the door slammed shut.

Liv sighed, too traumatized to feel bad. Oh god, what do I do now?

She lifted her head, to see if she looked any better.

She wasn't the only one in the reflection.

She screamed, and in the few seconds it took for her to turn around, she hoped that the person that she'd seen in the mirror, standing behind her and staring in disapproval, had just been an illusion.

That hope was dashed when a hard hand gripped her arm. "You should have taken your own advice, Olivia, and minded your business."

He murmured something, and the last thing she ever saw was his grave gray-blue eyes.

Kai stared into the pool. He had turned off his glow-stick when he reached the spot, and a few minutes later, his eyes had adjusted. The light in the cave was so small, so far above, that the water was an inky-black reflection. He knelt at the rocky edge, placed the flat of his bleeding palm on the water, and whispered the words of the spell he'd been practicing throughout the long journey from Virginia to Nova Scotia.

For all he gave his baby sister a hard time, this trip was actually her idea, albeit unknowingly.

Phaesmotus mortuos suscitat

Phaesmotus ostende mihi faciem tuam

Kai had visited Nova Scotia a few times in 1994. One of the Martin grimoires contained lore about this place - Silas, the Cure, the tombstone with Qestiyah's calcified blood. During his first trip, Kai had hoped he would find Silas there. Perhaps a desiccated immortal wouldn't count as a 'living thing' in a Prison World. The grimoires had given grim warnings about raising said immortal and that only made Kai want to meet the man more. A person who could bring 'hell on Earth' sounded like Kai's idea of good company.

But he'd found nothing. Just a vial of a Cure that was useless to him.

Phaesmotus mortuos suscitat

Phaesmotus ostende mihi faciem tuam

Later, after Katherine Pierce gate-crashed his prison with her companion, and the vampire had wrongly chosen to turn Kai against the only person he'd ever cared about, he considered making the trip to Nova Scotia to find it and shove it down her throat.

Not that he could complain about how it all worked out. He had eventually delivered death to Katherine Pierce in the most poetically gruesome way possible. And before she died, he'd got every bit of information out of her concerning Rudy Hopkins's death, her connection to it, and the failsafe she'd put in place to expose his killers to Bonnie if she, Katherine, met an untimely fate. It was a simple matter to get Liv to intercept that message while he, Kai, distracted Bonnie.

And what a distraction that was.

Phaesmotus mortuos suscitat

Phaesmotus ostende mihi faciem tuam

Even now, as his body thrummed with the building magic, he could taste Bonnie on his tongue. Feel her warmth drawing him in.

It hadn't just been about keeping Bonnie from her dorm. There were a thousand ways he could have done that. But he wanted - needed - to see her. To be with her in the most intimate sense. One last time.

Because who knew if he was coming back? He was doing something that, to the best of his knowledge, was only theoretically possible, based on an idea from his conversation with Liv:

"Expression isn't impossible."

"It is now that she died with the power. She didn't carry it with her into the Prison World…"

The violent death of a witch left its scar on the site of her death. And this is where Bonnie died, with a body full of Expression. In the cave of Nova Scotia that was seeped with relics of her ancestor's magic, there was a chance that Kai could find both. There was also a chance that even if he was right, the attempt wouldn't destroy him.

So he'd gone to the woman he was obsessed with to remind himself what he was coming back to.

Phaesmotus mortuos suscitat

Phaesmotus ostende mihi faciem tuam

He'd been so deep in his thoughts, that he didn't realize the water was bubbling until he heard the popping air. It was warm under his palm now, and he felt slightly dizzy. His offer of blood had been greedily accepted.

Something brushed against his palm, and he flinched.

Concentrate.

It brushed his skin again, and this time he let it. Another hand, small, familiarly-shaped rubbed against his own. He turned his palm around so he could clasp it, and pulled, stepping back.

She stepped out of the pool, holding his hand. She was naked, wet with the water clinging to her skin.

Even though this was exactly what he'd hoped, the shock of her still made him slightly dizzy.

"Bonnie," he whispered, hoarse, reverent.

Her green eyes were catlike, glowing in the dark; and when she smiled, a sharp slant across her face, he felt a shiver work up his spine.

She tipped her head to the side. Yes, they called me that before. The words in Bonnie's voice echoed through his head.

"I want a boon," he said through numb lips.

I know what you want, she said and she placed her hands on his chest.

She was small and the force of her push was no more than Bonnie's would have been, but he stumbled, falling to the ground.

She climbed into his lap. He was naked, he realized.

"Shouldn't you buy me a drink first?" he managed before her mouth was on his.

His whole body shuddered at the touch of her tongue against his own, the feel of her pebbled breasts against his bare chest, the dampness between her legs as she slid against his stiffening cock. She broke the kiss, her warm mouth parting from his at the last possible minute, then took him in hand. Her eyes were hooded, and slits of green glowed in the dark.

"Bonnie."

You want her. You want everything .

"Yes," he whispered, heady with lust and emotion.

You will do anything to get her.

"Is this payment?" he moaned as her hand twisted just so. It was a wonder he still had enough blood in his brain to form words.

She slid down his body and took him in her mouth. He almost came there and then. For what felt like hours, there was nothing in his head except the feel of her tongue, the suction of her mouth. Her hand reached for his own, put his fingers in her curls, and he wrapped his hand around her hair, and pulled her up to him.

She was smiling when he grabbed her neck, raising himself on his elbows to kiss her. He could taste himself in her mouth. The thought fluttered through his head that it would be the last thing he tasted.

No, it won't be. Her voice thrilled with Bonnie's breathless laugh, tipped with malice, as she broke off the kiss. Her hands were back on his shoulders, but she didn't push him down, merely shifted until her hot folds brushed against the tip of his cock. They both hissed when she sheathed him. Her eyes fluttered shut. You're going to get everything you want.

Her small hands pushed him until his back was on the rocky ground. Sharp edges dug into his skin, but he didn't care. If anything the pain heightened the pleasure.

She was moving, and he thought of the first time he'd done this with Bonnie. How it felt like coming home.

This was the same and nothing at all like that, and the disconnect was driving him almost as crazy as her body moving against him, squeezing him dry.

And then you're going to pay for it.
