Max and 99 were summoned into the Chief's office.
"Hi, Chief," said Smart.
"You wanted to see us?" said 99.
"Hi," he said. "Sit down, please." They sat. "As an extra measure of security, we've decided to get your footprints."
"Our FOOTPRINTS?!" they said together.
"That's right. That debacle with Siegfried's plot to replace us all with doubles made us decide to try this as a new security measure. So, I need to get footprints from the two of you."
"I'm wearing pantyhose that I'll need to take off," said 99.
"Sure, 99. You can go into another room and do that."
"Thanks, Chief." She left.
"Ok, Max. This is a special ink blotter." He showed it to him; it was extra large sized. He then got up and placed it on the floor.
"Right, Chief." He stood up and began to step on it, but the Chief stopped him.
"Max, take off your shoes and socks, first!"
"Oh, yeah; sorry about that, Chief!"
He took his Oxfords and socks off. Then he stood on the blotter.
"This feels interesting!"
"Yes, it does. Ok, stay there, a moment."
"Right, Chief."
He picked up a paper and put it on the floor next to the blotter. "Now, carefully stand on this paper."
"Right, Chief."
He got off the blotter and stood on the paper. "How's that?"
"Not bad. Ok, carefully step off the paper."
"Yes, Chief."
He got off of it. The Chief picked up the paper and studied it. "Not bad." He put it on his desk, picked up a pen, and wrote on it Maxwell Smart, Agent 86.
"Looks good, Max."
"Thank you, Chief."
"There's just one problem."
"What's that?"
"You're standing on the floor!"
"Well, of course I am!" But then, he understood the Chief's meaning; he was standing barefoot on the clean floor! "Er, sorry about that, Chief!"
He sighed. "Here's a towel!" He picked one up and gave it to Max. He sat in a chair and wiped his feet off.
Meanwhile, 99 came back in. She had taken her white stockings off. "I'm ready, Chief."
"Good, 99. Stand on the blotter."
She took her shoes off and stood on it.
"This feels interesting."
"That's just what I said, 99!" said Max.
The Chief picked up another blank paper and put it on the floor next to the blotter. "Now, carefully stand on this paper."
"Right, Chief."
She got off the blotter and placed her feet on the paper.
"Excellent," said the Chief.
"Can I have a towel, please?"
"Here, you can use mine."
"Thank you Max."
He gave her his towel. She carefully sat in another chair and cleaned her feet off. While doing this, she saw the footprints on the floor. "Whose footprints are these?"
"Mine!" admitted Max.
"Oh!"
The Chief got up and picked up 99's prints. He put the paper on the table and marked it 99. Meanwhile, she finished cleaning off her feet and she and Max put their shoes back on.
"That's all, for the moment," said the Chief. "You two can go back to your offices now."
They got up to leave. Max stopped at the Chief's desk and looked at 99's prints.
"You have very shapely feet, 99!"
She smiled. "Thank you, Max! Yours are nice, too!
"Why, thank you!"
The Chief smiled. "All right, you two!"
