I wake feeling a bit groggy from not sleeping well. For some reason I can't get Felix off my mind and everything that happened yesterday. Did I jump to conclusions? Did I misread the moment? After the word "date" doesn't always mean "hey, I like you, want to be my girlfriend?" could simply mean he enjoyed my company and wanted to do an other outing.
I find the kitchen I share with Mother empty and instead of being sad, I am relived I don't have to pretend to be happy. As my oatmeal bubbles away on the stove, I slice dragon fruit for Longg, who is eyeing it hungrily. I'm just sitting down when my video call goes off, and I smile for real. Marinette is calling!
"Marinette!" I cried. "I'm so glad you called!" she laughs. "Well, I had a free moment, and I miss you. Adrien told me he misses his fencing partner." I can totally see that. "So, have you been to any of the hottest stores yet? Any cute guys?" "Okay, number one, you have a guy, and number two, I would buy your clothes any day! I've been to a bookstore which is where I met a cute guy." "Oh?" "Marinette, I met Felix." "No!" "Yes! And of course I screwed it up already." "What do you mean? Spill!" "I thought he was asking me on a date when I realized to late he just wanted to spend time with me." "I'm sure it will work out. And you don't want to jump into anything to soon anyway. Maybe get to know him better." "I mean, I went and watched a group of his friends play chess yesterday afternoon. They all seem nice, but nerdy." "You can always observe from afar and get your first impressions. You know, I didn't even like Adrien when we first met." I narrow my eyes, peering at the phone. "Are you sure this is Marinette?" "Well, if you want to talk to Ladybug…." now we're giggling so much its hard to calm down. "It feels so good to laugh," I tell her wiping a tear from my eye.
Suddenly, Marinette sighs. "I wish I could make Kitty laugh. Or Adrien. They're way to quiet lately." "Quiet, how?" "Adrien just wants to spend time on the couch wrapped in a blanket watching movies, and Cat was so distant last night I thought he was a statue. I…" Marinette pauses, biting her lip. "Can you keep a secret?" I nod. "I let Cat curl up in my lap on patrol, and I sang him a few lullabies while running my fingers through his hair. He seemed to like that."
"Adrien lost his family, Marinette. I don't blame him for not wanting to be out in the public eye were he has act happy. He knows he can be himself around you. As for Cat, you two have been through a lot the last couple of months after he got back from that secret location. Does he ever talk about it?" "No, and I'm not going to push. When they're ready, I'll be willing to listen."
"I hate to run, but my oatmeal is getting cold. Will talk soon, okay?" "Okay. Love you." I end the call, and am about to spoon a bite of oatmeal to my lips when I hear a rap at the glass door. My heart jumps when I realize Felix is standing there.
I quickly get up to let him in. "Hey, what are you doing here?" Felix blushes, twisting a ring on his finger round and round. "I, wanted to ask if…" his cheeks are now as red as apples. "If we could be friends?" I let out a light laugh, smiling. "Who said I didn't want to be friends?" He lets out a breath. "I feel so stupid still from yesterday." "Please don't. Lets forgive and forget, okay?"
I reach out my hand for him to shake, but when they do, my head floats off into the clouds. His hand is soft, warm, gentle…. I shake my head silently, trying to clear it. "Would you join me for coffee this morning?" A laugh bubbles up from my throat, and Felix cocks his head, curiously. "Sorry, sorry," I say, giggling, "You just remind me of when the Beast asks Belle to join him for dinner." Felix laughs too. "As I recall, he was a bit more forceful the first time round, but eventually that all worked out."
"And yes, I will join you for coffee, just as soon as I finish my oatmeal." Before Felix can say another word, I march back to the kitchen, him trailing behind me. "Marinette called from Paris this morning," I tell him when we sit down. "I assume you know her?" "Ah, yes. I know her well. She'll be a world famous designer before we know it." He leans forward. "But what about you, Kagami? What do you want to do when you grow up?"
"I want…" I whisper, and when I look at him, his green eyes are burning into mine, and I blurt the truth. "I want to go back to Japan some day to live in the mountains and have a family of own. Oh, and be an artist." Felix gives a soft little sigh. "Sounds like a perfect dream. I'm still figuring out what path to take…." his eyes seem far away. "Surely you've thought about it."
"My father….controlled my as a child growing up. It was only after he passed away, I've begun to think about it." "Oh. I am sorry for your loss." Felix clears his throat gently. "May we change the subject?" "Yes, and I am ready to go if you are." Even now that I have eaten my oatmeal, I don't remember eating it, so engrossed I was in our conversation.
Its a beautiful sunny day, and I feel happy to spending with a friend. "Kagami?" "Yes?" "Did you have your heart set on Starbucks or could we go to the bookstore where I could make you one for free?" I shrug. "I' m open for a change. Lead the way!"
Fifteen minutes later, I'm in the back kitchen at the coffee shop, wondering what I've agreed to. "Are you sure your supposed to add that much cream?" I laugh, and he gives me a goofy smile. "Oh, do you prefer whip cream?" he grabs a can and sprays me, and I give a playful shriek as it backfires spraying both of us. "Mm, even better on you," he grins.
Despite his silly antics, its on the of the best drinks ever and I tell him so. We head out into the shop, and suddenly he grabs my hand. "Where are we going?" "Secret," he grins back at me as he leds me up the winding staircase. He lets go of my hand where he puts on a small magic show for me in the children's corner. I must say, I'm impressed.
"Thank you, thank you! The Great Felix thanks you!" I clap hard, smiling till my cheeks hurt. Speaking of hurt, he looks up with a hurt expression on his face. "What, no rose?" "Who are you, Cat Noir?" Even when he's not giving them to Ladybug, Cat loves roses. A strange look passes over Felix's face. "Wait, what is this sharp thorny thing in my side? A rose for a beautiful lady!" he presents me the rose with a flourish.
I breathe in its perfume smell, then feel my phone buzzing. Mother. "Kagami, where are you? Time to come home for dinner." I gasp as I check the time. How did the day pass so quickly? "I need to go," I say, after ending the call.
"May I walk you home?" Felix asks. I nod, feeling shy. After a fun filled day, we're lost in our own thoughts. Mother is waiting for me when I arrive. "See to tomorrow?" I ask, but Mother apparently has other plans.
"Amelie and I need you at the studio tomorrow. No time for play or friends." "Mother, please!" "Inside, Kagami!" "Yes, Mother." I look up at Felix, who is staring at me. A silent goodbye is passed between us before he whispers as I walk past…. "I'll find a way."
A shiver passes through me. Mother is not happy. "You didn't leave a note, Kagami. What if you were lost or injured?" "Felix came by, Mother. And I rather spend time with my friend then alone." Mother scoffs. "Ha, he is not your friend, he is your enemy. He stole the Peacock Miraculous from Gabriel Agreste. When Gabriel passed on it was supposed to be mine!"
Before I can ask, Mother walks away, slamming the door. The happy feeling of the day drains away like a leaky candle, but two good things still happen. As I slump into a chair, feeling the tears prick at my eyes, Longg cuddles into my cheek and I cuddle my Kwami close. The other is no one can take away these special memories I made today with Felix.
Marinette was right. First impressions are good, and as first impressions go, I don't know when I've had more fun.
I make a bowl of noodles and clamber onto couch, and after I've eaten my bowl of noodles, I spend some time sketching. I draw myself with my Dragon Miraculous outfit, offering a flower to the handsome peacock holder who is Felix Graham De Vanilly.
Longg gives me a toothy grin as he enjoys his fruit. "What?" I ask. "Are you sure you don't have a crush on another holder?" I groan, getting up to clear my head.
I head out onto the balcony to watch the sunset, the sweet scent of lilacs filling the air. Maybe tomorrow will be a welcome distraction after all.
Do I have a crush, after turning him down? Arrgh, what is with green eyed boys and their charms? Tomorrow, come what may.
