Wednesday morning at 7am the doorbell ring, and as expected Mrs. Rossini had arrived with an armful of Italian foods. She also made sure not to bring the fish truck so as not to upset the pregnant gals' stomachs. "Hey Mrs. R! Thanks so much for coming to help us out!" Tony exclaimed.
"Of course, Tony. That's what family does!" Carmella responded.
"I cleared off a shelf in the fridge for the goodies you brought, just as you'd asked. There's already lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and plain chicken and noodles in there. Plus two gallons of butter brickle in the freezer."
"Tony, you didn't need to do all that. Now, where are my patients?"
"Angela is in the study, where we put a bed for her for the time being as the stairs are hard for her to navigate. And Mona is up in her room. Sam's out in the apartment, but if you need extra hekp she can stay in my old room. You can stay in mine and Angela's room while you're here."
"Tony, the couch will be just fine."
"Nothin' doing! You'll be much more comfortable on the bed."
"Good morning, Tony. Hello, Mrs. Rossini. I didn't hear the doorbell." Angela said as she walked into the living room.
"Hiya, Angela."
"Good morning, sweetheart. What are you doing up?"
"Well, I can do many things on bedrest, Tony, but I still need to get up to go to the bathroom."
"Tony, you do know that bedrest doesn't mean being in bed all day, everyday, dontcha?"
"Yeah, Mrs. R, I know. Sweetheart, is there anything I can get for you? Hank'll be down in a few minutes, then we'll be hitting the road."
"Some tea and orange juice would be great. And maybe some of those croissants you made yesterday?"
"I'll put a tray together and put it on the desk in the study."
"Actually, could you set it up out here, by the couch? I want to visit with Samantha and Mrs. Rossini for a bit."
"Sure thing, honey."
Twenty minutes later, Tony and Hank pulled out of the driveway, promising to call when they got to Indiana where they planned to stop for lunch and stretch their legs before continuing on to Iowa. Angela recalled the stops she and Tony had made just a few months before. Of course they'd had a lot of stuff they brought with. She remembered the cute little bed and breakfast they found in Ohio's Amish country. What a great little place that was. What an amazing night of lovemaking too! She wondered how long it would be before they could ignite their passions again. The doctors figured it'd be at least two weeks before the placenta tear would repair itself, and then a few more for her abdominal organs to adjust to her spleen being gone. Plus right now she couldn't get up and down the stairs, so she wouldn't be able to be in their bedroom. Our bedroom - after all these years they would no longer be down the hall from each other, but be together in one room. No more secrets, no more hiding their feelings, everything out in the open. How she couldn't wait for them to spend each and every night next to each other in their home. It seemed strange that they were doing things a bit out of order, but nothing about them was exactly traditional. They went from a snail's pace to lightning speed over the past few months, and yet she couldn't be any happier.
Later that afternoon Tony called to let them know that they made an unplanned stop in Cleveland due to a major backup on the interstate. "We're gonna hunker down here for the night, then head on to Iowa in the morning," he told her.
"I miss you, Tony!" she replied.
"I miss you too, sweetheart. Hank wants to talk to Sam. I love you, mi amore."
"I love you too, my love!" She turned to Sam. "Hank wants to talk to you, Samantha."
Sam took the phone from Angela. "Hi, honey! How's the trip going? Is Dad driving you crazy yet?"
"Not at all!" Hank responded. "Dad's been great! We need to go visit some of the places he pointed out someday. Oh, I gotta go! I love you Sam!"
"I love you too, my amazing man!" she said as she hung up the phone.
"Was that the guys calling?" Carmella asked from the kitchen door.
"Yes, it was Mrs. R. Is there anything I can help you with?" Sam asked.
"Sam, you just stay out there. I got it all under control in here. Besides Jonathan's being a big help."
"Yeah Sam, we got this!" Jonathan called out from the kitchen.
"Okay, I'll stay out here with Mom then. Where's Mona?"
"She's upstairs taking a nap. I'll go let her know dinner will be ready soon."
"Mom, you can't go upstairs yet! I'll go up and let her know, and see if she'll need a tray," Sam said.
"Oh, thank you Samantha. What would I do without you and Jonathan?"
"Well, Mom, you're there for us too."
After dinner, Jonathan and Mrs. Rossini went to clean up in the kitchen while Samantha, Mona, and Angela retreated to the living room. "Owww!" Angela yelped.
"Mom what is it?" Sam asked.
"Angela, are you okay?" asked Mona.
"Yes, I'm fine." Angela replied. "The babies are just having fun kicking my belly."
"Awww! Can I feel Mom?"
"Sure, honey! Just give me your hand." Just then a little foot nearly knocked Sam's hand off of Angela's abdomen.
"You've got a future soccer star in there, Dear!" Mona exclaimed.
"Yeah Mom, they'll be a World Champion if they keep that up!" Sam added.
"Your father will be upset that he missed this. Here I was thinking that it'd be at least another month or so before I'd feel them kicking. And I feel like I'm taking your special time away too, Samantha."
"Mom, why would you think that? I think it's great that we get to experience this together! When you and Dad finally got toegther, I was hoping that you'd have a baby together. Jonathan and I both did. And now that you're having twins, it's an even greater blessing."
"But you're having your baby after I have the twins now. I don't want to steal your thunder."
"Not a chance! I cannot wait for my son or daughter to grow up alongside my brother and sister. They will be the three luckiest babies in the world!"
"You truly are the most amazing daughter, Samantha. I am so grateful that your dad and I finally made it to be together."
"That was never a question for us, it was just a matter of when it was going to happen."
"I think I'm going to go lie down now. Goodnight, Mother. Goodnight, my daughter."
"Goodnight, Mom."
"Goodnight, Dear."
