Tony pulled out all the stops for dinner that evening. He made homemade ravioli, fresh asparsgus, homemade crusted bread, and for dessert tiramisu, creme brullee, and spumoni. There was also a English crown roast on the table. Everyone was in awe of the food set before them, most especially Nana. "Mr. Micelli, I mean Tony, this looks absolutely lovely. How did you know that English crown roast was my favorite?"
"Actually, that was all Mona's doing, Nana," Tony replied.
"Mona, you made this? For me?"
"Yes Mummy, I did. I remember how much you enjoyed it whenever Grandmother had made it, While it may not be her recipe, I did research at the library and found an authentic English recipe," Mona said.
"Oh, Monie, how can I ever thank you?"
"Mummy, you being here for Angela is thanks enough. I also thought that this would be a good start in mending our relationship. After all, we have a new generation being born soon."
"Yes dear, I agree."
Mona got up to give her mother a hug. "Thank you, Mummy."
Touched by the heartfelt exchange between her mother and gradmother, Angela felt happy tears well up in her eyes. "Nana, Mother, I am so happy to see you both getting along. It's a wonderful thing to have you both together."
"Yeah," Tony added. "And Aunt Rosa and Mrs. Rossini too. It's great that all of our motherly figures are here to celebrate our babies and granddaughter."
"It is great, Dad," Sam chimed in. "I know that my first mom, Marie, and my grandmothers are all looking down from above too. But growing up with you ladies," she paused to look at Angela, Mona, and Carmella, "I feel very blessed."
"Oh, honey, we love you so much! I'm sure that Marie was a wonderful lady, but if she were still around you and your dad would never have been here with us," Mona said.
"That is true, Mone. But Marie would've loved you both. I sometimes think that she had pushed your bicycle into me in the lobby of your apartment building all those years ago," Tony wistfully stated with tears streaming down his cheeks. "She was always telling me that she wanted me to be happy again after she was gone. And she wanted Sam to have the best as well."
"She sure did, Tony," Carmella stated. "She never wanted you to be alone after she was gone. Did I ever tell you what she told me shortly before she died?"
"No, Mrs. R, I don't believe that you did."
"Well, she said 'Make sure that Tony doesn't stay alone. Sam needs a mom in her life, especially for when she gets older. Tony is a great father, but he's not so great with the girly stuff. Watch over them, Mrs. Rossini, and if he doesn't find someone else to love by the time that Samantha is a teenager, have my father put a scare into him. He knows what to do if you just say the word.' When you first introduced me to Angela, I saw that same look in your eyes you had when you first started dating Marie. And as time moved on, that look turned stronger, and I knew that she would be the one to heal your heart and be a mom to Sam."
"She always loved you, Dad. It made her sad when she knew she was dying. I don't remember much about her, but I do remember that," Sam said.
"WHOA! She was gonna have Nick put a scare into me? I guess she really didn't want me to be alone!" Tony replied.
Angela looked at him with loving eyes. "I'm really glad we are where we are all meant to be then, sweetheart. I know that Michael had called you back when he left again because he could see the connection that you and I had. While he and I were trying to make another go of things, he was jealous of it. But then when we couldn't make it work, he was happy that Jonathan and I had you to help take care of us. He may not have been the most interactive husband and father, but he does love Jonathan," she said looking at her son.
"I know Mom. He and I have talked out a lot of stuff as I've gotten older. He's not even mad about me calling Tony "Dad". He's just so grateful that he was there for you and me when we needed someone," Jonathan stated.
"Whoa, buddy, he's really okay with that?"
"Yes Dad, he is."
"Remind me to thank him next time he and I talk."
"I will, Dad. I will."
