Ace walks to her door very sluggishly and almost trips over a bag of food. "What," she bends down and picks it up watches as a piece of paper falls to the ground, leaning down she recognizes the scrawl on it. "Graham." She quickly reads the note and smiles for the first time since he came by with lunch this afternoon. After setting down the food on the coffee table she goes and changes into some lounge clothes. Sitting down she takes a big bite of her food and dials the man's number.
"Your home Ace," Graham can't help but let the relief escape from his voice.
"Yeah," Ace replies with her mouth still full of food.
"Good you're eating."
"Thank you for dinner, I am going to eat then head to bed, I am exhausted."
"I understand, want to talk about it?"
"Not really, I just want to eat and go to bed."
"Want a morning wake up call?"
"I don't know, I am going to be heading in rather early tomorrow."
"Can you try and get some sleep?"
"I will, thank you for caring."
"You never need to thank me for that. I am going to do anything possible to make all of this easier on you."
"You don't have to do that."
"I want to do it. If there is one thing that makes you smile everyday, it will be me either bringing you and Nyssa some food or sending you some stupid joke in a text."
"Thank you, though I don't know where my smile will go until we get all of this figured out. As much as I hate to say this, but this means I don't know when we can go on that date."
"I understand."
"If you want to see others."
"Ace, do not finish that sentence, I only like one person enough to even think about moving on from Grace, and that is you, Dorothy McShane."
"You have never said my Christian name."
"I feel like I needed to say it to get my point across. We may not be able to see each other as much as I like for the foreseeable future, but you will still be seeing me as I bring you lunch."
"It will be the best part of my day."
"Mine too, want me to let you go so you can head to bed?"
"I probably should get up to bed, but I still want to talk to you, at least hear your voice."
"How about I tell you a story as you fall asleep. As long as you plug in your phone and set your alarm."
"I will do just that."
"Tell me when you are tucked in."
"Ok, I'm tucked in."
"Comfy?"
"Very."
"The story starts when a hero falls into a trap by his old enemy."
"Is this story going to be what I think it is," Ace asks with a laugh in her voice that is music to Graham's ears.
"Maybe, do you want me to continue?"
"Yes please."
"When the hero thinks that she had her arch nemesis in her grasp she is greeted by some old friends of hers."
"Oi."
"By old I mean friends of hers for multiple decades."
"Better, by a little bit."
"When the hero goes off with the person that she is fated to not be with, her friends try to stop the enemy from breaking loose."
"Sadly, it doesn't work. When the enemy has teamed up with other foes because the enemy of my enemy is my friend cliche," Ace lightly laughs. "One of the friends stays behind to fight one of the foes that also added in killing a friend of hers. The other friend ends up taking a leap of faith only to be caught and gets dropped off where she meets a troll."
"You are not a troll."
"Where she meets a human."
"Better."
"The human is instantly smitten with the hero's best friend. After blowing a different enemy the hero shows up and the human tries to pay attention to the best friend as he watches her in a new light, but that doesn't last long. After the human and the two best friends get dropped off with the daughter of a different best friend. The human asks for the mysterious friend's number knowing he wanted to hear his name come from her lips again, and like how her name fell from his lips. Ace." With no reply Graham repeats her name to find she is asleep, "goodnight Ace, the human in the story ends up falling in love." Graham hangs up his phone and goes to bed himself.
During the night Ace starts to dream, 'hi honey I'm home.' Out comes a man with sandpaper hair and blue eyes wearing a brown leather jacket. He walks up to the woman who grabs the lapels of his jacket into a mouth searing kiss that quickly grows deep.
'I'm glad you're home, how was your day?'
'It was good Nyssa sent her love.'
'That's nice, how about her boss?' The woman who is the boss brings the man into another kiss, this time they move back to the couch.
'Does that give you the answer,' the woman says after she breaks the kiss.
'Oh yes it does Ace,' the man goes in for another kiss.
'Mmm, Graham.' Ace hums into the kiss as tongues meet and clothes start to fall away. A few hours later both are laying in each other's arms upstairs, 'what a welcome home,' Ace tells Graham after she kisses his shoulder.
'I don't know what came over me.'
'I did,' Ace says with a joyous laugh.
'That isn't what I meant and you know it.'
'You can't blame me for trying,' Ace starts running her index finger up and down Graham's bare chest.
'I know, though I can usually wait until after dinner at least.'
'I think it was the both of us that were refed up and ready. I love you Graham.'
'I love you too Ace." Graham leans his head down and kisses Ace. Ace turns around in her bed with a smile on her face moving into a dreamless part of sleep.
