Christmas and Boxing Day have passed, but during the holiday, the weather had grown colder and colder, enough so that the turntable at Tidmouth Sheds is frozen in a position where none of the engines can get onto it. With the engines trapped in the sheds, Thomas decides to pass the time by telling the story of an engineer who once visted the island from Lapland one icy winter.

Things have not been going well for James, especially after a falling out with Gordon following Edward's transfer to Wellsworth. So the red tender engine decides to take Henry's train to the mainland and find a new life outside of Sodor when he arrives at a Steelworks and meets its two engines, Hurricane and Frankie. Are things what they seem, and will James ever return home?

The harbours at Brendam, Arlesburgh, and Knapford are starting to face the prospect of congestion as more and more ships are coming into port with essential goods, so the Fat Controller has to look into another harbour. Deciding to restore the old, long abandoned harbour at Kirk Ronan, the Fat Controller also recieves a surprise proposition to restore a certain old barge as well.
