For the final region of their little tour before their planned return to Ylisstol, Robin and Lucina found themselves in eastern Ylisse. It was a mountainous region and as such, bred a harsher breed of citizen. That was not to say they were inhospitable, but they were quite independent, and generally speaking had the weaker ties to the crown.
The last governor had tried to change that. That had been Ricken's father. He had hitched his wagon to Chrom's father's, and, well, not the best cause to bet the farm on. As such, the house had bled cash and influence. It was rumored that another house might replace it. Though, Ricken's newfound war hero status had stayed those rumors for now.
Unfortunately, Ricken had been absent as he was still finishing up his studies in Ylisstol. Robin was disappointed as he was eager to see a familiar face, but in a way he was relieved as well. It kept the almost surreal atmosphere with Lucina alive. The tactician worried that seeing the others might bring him back down to reality, and he was not ready for that just yet.
Fiddling with the item in his pocket, Robin smiled. They were together. They were a couple now. The problem came in that neither of them really knew what to do next. Marriage was a logical step, but Robin was not sure if they were ready for that just yet. Still, he was happy and content. He saw no reason to rush things if Lucina was content. He would hold onto it as long as needed.
"I suppose it's time to head back now," Lucina spoke wistfully as she stared off at the horizon. The high altitude at least gave an amazing view of the halidom. One they could not really appreciate the last time they were in the area.
"Yes, but no reason to rush," Robin suggested, "Wouldn't want to hurt ourselves going on these mountain trails at night."
"It's not that dark," Lucina replied curiously, taking in the sun's position, "We should be fine to keep going."
Robin smiled and shook his head, "Never change, Lucina. Seriously, though, we could take our time. Chrom specifically recommended it. That last little village looked pretty quaint."
"Hmm, yes. Very well. What's another day?"
"You were right, this is lovely," Lucina admired the simple village, "Seems like a lovely place to settle down."
"It does," Robin agreed, taking a deep breath of mountain air, "Shame the halidom would fall apart without me, but, hey, maybe we can take vacations."
"That does sound nice," Lucina admired the kids playing in the street. Robin found himself smiling. It was a reminder that their fighting had been worth it. It was also a reminder of just how lucky he was. She was too good for him. He was not sure if he was ready for kids though, but they were not even married yet.
"I think I'll go get us some rooms. Innkeepers tend to be in on all the gossip, so maybe they know a good place to eat. I'll be back in a bit."
"Okay," Lucina waved, "See you soon."
After Robin left, Lucina continued to admire the village. Everything was so peaceful, so full of life, but without any of the stress of life in the capital. She could stay there and simply watch for hours.
As she sat, an older lady took a seat beside her, "It's great seeing the young ones so happy, isn't it?"
"Oh yes," Lucina agreed wholeheartedly.
"Thinking of having your own someday?"
"One day, perhaps," She smiled. The idea seemed so fantastical, but she could not deny she wanted it one day. She had such a hard time imagining herself as she was: happy. She wanted to hold onto it as long as she could.
"Are you married?"
"No, but…I do have a special someone. He's very kind, and quite handsome too." Lucina looked off wistfully.
"Young love. How precious. You want my advice, marry him sooner than later. You never know what might happen. Cherish all the time you have."
Lucina looked at the older woman, "Are you married?"
"I was," Her eyes became distant, "He's been gone for several years now. Taken in war. I still cherish every memory we shared." Now looking at Lucina, she continued, "So trust me, you want to cherish all the time that you have together."
"Thank you, I will keep it in mind."
"Hey, Lucina!" Robin called as he got closer, "I think I got a lead. A quaint little spot. Oh, hello, ma'am."
"Ah, you must be the special someone," She smiled, "He's a keeper."
"Excuse me?"
"Oh, never you mind," Lucina smiled before bidding farewell to the elderly woman, "Let's go eat."
"Lucina," After clearing his throat, Robin continued, "You've barely touched your food. Are you feeling alright?"
"Hmm? Oh, I guess I was just distracted," She corrected her posture in a rather mannered way, but Robin was used to odd displays of regality from the warrior woman.
"Anything you want to talk about?"
"I just…I…let's get married!"
Robin blinked a few times after nearly choking on his water. He tasted the words on his tongue to make sure they were real, "Married? Like…in a few months?"
"Why wait?" Lucina asked. She was serious. She had to admit that the older woman's words had mirrored her own sense that this would not last. It was another one of those phantom emotions, but she refused to let this one hold. She would keep Robin. It would last.
"It's…a little sudden. We haven't been a couple all that long."
"Yes, but just because it wasn't official, didn't mean we didn't have feelings long before that. I know I do not intend to change my mind. I love you, Robin. That will not change."
"I…true. What about our friends though? Shouldn't we invite them? Plus, I can't exactly give you the ceremony you deserve out here and on such short notice."
"I know. I'd like to have them present, but…I don't want to wait any longer."
"Lucina, what's this really about?"
"Saw through me that easily?" The bluenette sighed. He did know her so well, "I…I have another one of those senses from just beyond the inky blackness of my amnesia, and it tells me that it won't last. That I can't be happy, but…I don't want to give into it. I want us to be happy, together, and if something is coming, I want to cherish what we have, with no regrets."
"Lucina…I'm not planning on going anywhere any time soon."
"Thank you. I suppose it was a bit silly."
"Not at all," Robin grabbed her hands in his, "In fact…sure, why not? Let's see if there's anywhere to get married here."
"You mean it?"
"Absolutely. It won't be what you deserve, but we can have something fancier later."
"Oh, but what about rings?"
"Well, I don't have a ring," Robin coughed, his face red as he pulled out a ring out of his pocket, "I, uh, did some shopping. I planned to ask you to marry me eventually. Just not today. Guess we're just moving up the time table.
"So," Robin got on one knee, "Let's at least do this part right. Lucina, will you marry me?"
"Yes!" Lucina leapt into his arms, and both were the happiest they had ever been.
The wedding was an incredibly simple affair if it could even be called a wedding. Fortunately, there was a judge in the region. With that, it was easy enough to make it official. It was hardly how either had pictured this day, but, frankly, both were too happy to care as they left the judge's house. Though, Lucina insisted they find some ring for Robin even if it was not the fanciest thing around.
"So, what now, my dear husband?" Lucina relished being able to use the title as she leaned into him.
"Heh, this is your show."
"I suppose it is. I'm-oh look!" Robin looked to see what had interrupted her to see a pegasus knight flying overhead.
"Huh, guess it's one of Cordelia's knights on patrol."
"They say it's a good omen if a pegasus flies over your wedding procession," Lucina waved eagerly and Robin did likewise though he was not sure if this counted as a procession.
"Well, let's hope that speaks well to many fruitful years ahead."
"I'm sure it will, Robin." Lucina could not stop smiling. Despite her quiet dread, she was happy. She could have happiness.
The pegasus knight had barely landed her mount before jumping off. She ran forward, nearly tripping several times along the way. Not that any of her comrades found that particularly unusual.
"I found her!"
That, however, got everyone's attention.
"Are you certain?" A dark haired man in a mask and black armor asked as he paused in tending to his wyvern.
"Yes," The pigtailed knight nodded enthusiastically, "Though…it was weird. She didn't seem to recognize me, and she was acting all lovey dovey with some guy."
"Are you certain that it was her?" A mage with a large hat adjusted his glasses.
"I know what my sister looks like!" The knight huffed with her hands on her hips.
"Perhaps our fair princess found love," A flamboyant young man with white hair noted.
"Hah," A swordswoman with dark twintails scoffed beside him, "She knows less about love than you do."
"Do you think she was tricked?" A sheepish archer asked from the edge of the group, "Or is some captive?"
"That's enough," Everyone stopped as a dark haired man walked in holding a sheathed sword that he never left far from his person these days, "We have to at least check. If it's her, then good."
"And if this man is some kidnapper?" A short girl with pointy ears asked.
"Or they fight back?" A jumpy taguel swallowed.
The man furrowed his brow, "Then we rescue her." He pulled the blade out of its scabbard and looked at his reflection in the gold and silver surface, "It's about time I returned this."
