In "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" we see Spock on Vulcan failing the Kolinahr test to remove all emotions. What happens to Spock before he returns to The Enterprise?

"Live long and prosper". The Vulcan Master drops the symbol of logic and walks away. Spock picks up the symbol, thinks of what might have been and what needs to be done.

Ten hours later Spock arrives at his old family home.
"Hello mother."
"Spock, what are you doing here, I thought we would never see you again after the Kolinahr test."
"Things have changed."
"Come in, look at you all covered in dust, you look like you need a good meal….."
One hour later Spock has been cleaned up, he is dressed in clean clothing and having dinner with his mother.
"So Spock, last year you made your final farewells to me and your father as you began your Kolinahr studies. I was in floods of tears but your father had accepted your decision."
"Where is my father?"
"He is at a diplomatic conference on Betazed, a fascinating planet, the natives are all telepaths. Sarek and I agreed that it wouldn't be a suitable place for a non telepath like me, so I stayed at home. So what happened, why are you here?"
"I was undergoing the final Kolinahr test, about to purge all human emotion and join with the High Master as a being of pure logic. Then I sensed a consciousness from space calling me. I need to find this and for this I will need the help of James Kirk. I must leave for Earth and Starfleet as soon as possible."
"Leave it to me Spock, I shall contact your father's office and arrange transportation for you to Earth….."

Three days later, at Starfleet command. Spock enters Admiral Kirk's office.
"I am Spock, I wish to see the Admiral immediately."
"Mr. Spock! It is an honour to meet your Sir. I am Commander Walsh, Admiral Kirk's chief of staff. The Admiral often speaks of his old Vulcan friend and comrade from The Enterprise."
"Indeed, I wish to see the Admiral immediately."
"I am afraid he is off planet, he has taken command of the refitted Enterprise, he has gone to meet a mysterious cloud entity on its way to Earth."
"Kirk seeks what I seek, I need to get to The Enterprise as fast as possible."
"There are no ships available fast enough to catch The Enterprise. The only way to get you there would be by high warp courier shuttle."
"Then that is how I shall travel."
"These shuttles are not designed for long distance human flights, there is minimal life support."
"Commander Walsh, I am not human….."

One day later Spock is looking at the amazed expression of Lieutenant Chekov
"Permission to come aboard Sir?"
