The news about the second interview wasn't all that shocking to Annie, considering it was part of the very beginning of the manga. She remembered those parts vividly, although unfortunately for her... she didn't really remember what chapter she had gotten to either. She'd probably begin figuring things out as they go. As of right now, Loid was doing Frankie's makeup to make him appear as if he was female. As one might think, it wasn't going very well. Frankie was too masculine-looking. One part of the manga she didn't quite understand was the fact that Frankie often struck out with women, which she didn't get. Especially now, since she's seeing him. Frankie, although not nearly as handsome as Loid, or even Yuri, wasn't bad looking. She turned her attention back to the scene at hand.
"No, this won't do." Loid stated, causing Frankie to become annoyed. Reasonably so, he basically said he was unable to make him appear feminine.
"I don't want this mama." Anya said, gaining the attention of everyone in the room, and causing Frankie to become even more upset. Annie decided now was a good time to butt in, before someone said something worse.
"I don't think you can pull off the mother role, Frankie." Loid explained, cutting Annie off before she could say anything.
"With all your talent for disguise, THIS was all you could come up with? Really?!" Frankie said, irritated.
"There's only so much I can do with that body type." Loid responded, turning and going to sit on the lounge chair.
"Frankie, don't take it personally." Annie said, finally able to get a word in. "You're just too masculine to appear feminine." This seemed to cheer Frankie up, as his expression softened. He then nodded in response and headed out, he probably had somewhere to be.
"There's no way around it then..." Loid started, gaining Annie and Anya's attention. "I'll go find a wife." they walked over and sat down with him, talking about what they were going to do, Loid then made a phone call to Frankie.
A few hours later, Frankie came in with a bunch of papers. These were undoubtedly the files of every woman within Berlint. Which, honestly... Was creepy, but you do what you gotta do, right? Loid was flipping through pages while Annie and Anya studied at the dining room table. Eventually, Anya hopped down off the dining chair and ran over to stand just in front of the lounge chair.
"Did you find a mama?" She asked, curiously. She was reasonably impatient, she was a young child, and was eager to continue on with the mission. This had always been the case, all throughout the manga. Unfortunately, Anya is too young and still doesn't quite grasp the reality of the situation. This is how she ends up getting herself into trouble so often.
"Not yet. This isn't easy." Loid responded, looking at Anya with an exhausted look in his eyes. Annie couldn't help but feel bad for him, the change in every day routine was probably taking a bit of a toll on him. He no longer could simply sleep whenever he crashed, etc. He had to appear as if he operates like a normal person.
"It's going to be scruffy head?!" Anya cried out, almost in horror. Just at that moment, almost like he was summoned, Frankie kicked the door open; mostly because nobody had come open the door for him. When Annie noticed, she ran over and took some of the papers out of his hands.
"I'm so sorry, Frankie!" She exclaimed, carrying the files over to Loid. "I didn't even hear you knocking!"
"It's fine... Don't worry about it." Frankie began, and then turned to Loid as he walked over. "So you need a woman that's refined enough for Eden Academy... Who doesn't care that you're divorced with two children... a teenager and a toddler... and who's willing to get married in 48 hours?" Loid looked up in response, realizing just how big of an ask this situation was. "If such a goddess exists... I'd love to meet her." Frankie stated, finally placing the pile of files onto the coffee table. Annie following suite.
"... That is... quite the ask, isn't it?" Annie responded, sighing softly as she sat next to Loid on the couch. Anya was now peeking over the side of the couch at Loid.
"Is... having a kid bad?" Anya's shaky voice whispered from the other side of the couch. "Are we keeping the mamas away?" She asked, and Loid patted her head in reassurance.
"There's nothing wrong with you two, this is about enrolling you." Loid stated, sighing softly as he flipped through the files. "You go watch TV and don't worry about it." Loid said, and Anya nodded in agreement. She then ran to the TV and turned on Spy Wars.
"So..." Frankie suddenly spoke up. "Why can't your agenc- URGH!" Frankie exclaimed in pain as Loid kicked him in the shin, successfully cutting him off and then sending a glare his way. This was undoubtedly because he nearly outed Twilight in front of his teenage, and very intelligent, adoptive daughter Annie, who was sat next to him. Frankie nodded in acknowledgement, realizing his mistake. They then completely fell silent, and then sat there, watching Anya smacking the TV.
"... These girls don't exactly look like... scions of a privileged family..." Frankie suddenly spat out, causing Annie to become annoyed. "Well... I mean, Annie behaves well enough... but they don't exactly look the part."
"You're right..." Loid admitted, nodding softly. "I'll se what I can do about their appearance, at least." Loid said, and then stood up. "Come on girls, let's go to the boutique." He continued, ignoring Frankie's words of protest as they get dressed.
When they made it to the boutique, it looked just as it did in the manga. A fancy looking building with retro styled clothing in the windows, luckily for her, she actually liked retro style before she transmigrated. They walked up to the counter as Anya ran off to look around the shop. Annie stopped to look at the clothing as Loid spoke to the proprietress. After they spoke for a bit, the proprietress called on the seamstress for some help measuring them.
"Come with me, miss. I'll take your measurements." The proprietress said, and lead Anya to the back. It took a few minutes for the seamstress to call Annie back, but when she did Annie followed her without an issue.
"Am I being sold to traffickers?!" Anya cried out in horror, surprising everyone in the room, including Loid. He couldn't help but wonder if Spy Wars was putting these things in her head.
"Not if you're a good girl... Where is she learning these words?" He asked himself, sighing softly.
"Raise your arms please." The seamstress asked, smiling kindly at her. She did as she was told, and the seamstress measured her height, neck, bust, waist and hips. '4.3.3... If I had a bust like this, my husband wouldn't be cheating on me.' the seamstress' annoyed thoughts rang through Annie's head. She didn't mean to read her mind, she did completely unintentionally. Annie couldn't help but feel bad for the seamstress, she couldn't imagine having someone cheat on her.
"Excuse me!" A voice rang throughout the boutique, although Annie didn't recognize the voice she did recognize the dialogue. It is Yor Briar, soon to be Yor Forger. Loid's fake wife, and Anya's fake mother.
"Oh, hello Yor. It's been while." The rest of Yor's conversation was overshined by Loid's thoughts about how Yor was able to sneak up on him, basically fawning over her. It was kind of funny, especially since Loid spends the majority of the manga going on and on about how this family is only for the mission.
"Sir..." Yor said, glancing over at Loid sheepishly. "You've been staring at me since I walked in here. Can I help you with something?" Your basically called out Loid, it is strange to sit and stare at a person... even if it isn't obvious. At least, to the common person.
"Uhh... no... I just thought you were... very pretty." Loid came up with the first excuse that came to his mind, and it definitely showed. That was the worst he could've thought of. It seemed as if she was about to say something, but then Anya ran out into the open, unaware of Yor's presence.
"Papa! I got measured!" Anya exclaimed as she ran out in excitement. "Who's that?" She asked next, while Yor seemed to be pouting a bit, mostly because she was just about to ask Loid out, at least for the party. Anya just stared in horror as she listened to Yor's... dark thoughts. Annie followed just as Yor said something about being an assassin in her thoughts, she came out just in time to see Anya react in horror and surprise.
"I'm back, fath-" Annie started talking, but then Anya cut her off.
"WAAAH!" She started fake crying, nobody would've bought it except for the fact that Yor is so gosh dang dense. "I'm so sad that Mama's gone!"
"What're you doing?" Loid asked, staring blankly at the young girl who was now acting what he viewed as ridiculous.
"It seems like Anya misses mother... As do I, but..." Annie scooped Anya up, and hugged her. "I understand how she's feeling."
"Oh? Is your wife away?" Yor asked, confirming that Anya and Annie had hooked her. Not that Anya needed Annie's help. This is how the manga goes, but Annie feels awkward just standing around.
"Ah... Well..." Loid started, putting a somber expression on, ignoring his irritation towards Annie and Anya. They're wasting time. "My wife passed two years ago. I'm doing my best to raise them as a single father."
"... Excuse me... may I speak to you outside?" Yor asked, Loid nodding in agreement curious as to what she has to say. Annie and Anya stand awkwardly as Yor explains her situation to Loid.
"... Your... pretend boyfriend...?" Loid asked. somewhat confused. It's a strange situation for sure, so Annie could understand his confusion.
"Yes... I lied to my brother and told him that I am in a relationship..." Yor began explaining, her face expressing her nervousness even more as she explained. "I know it's a lot to ask... but, I'd like to take you to a party." After this, Yor realized how ridiculous this situation sounds. "I promise you, this isn't some kind of scam! And... of course I'll find some way to repay you! I just... want to put my brother's mind at ease."
"I understand... and I will accept..." Loid began, but was unable to finish his sentence as Yor cuts him off.
"Really?!" She cried out in surprise, before apologizing for interrupting him.
"Under one condition..." Loid began, he continued explaining as he came up with an excuse. "Long story short... I want to ask you to attend a family interview, posing as Annie and Anya's mother... It was so important to my wife that in these uncertain times, that my daughters go to a good school..." He turned to look at Yor, who looked pretty inspired by his speech. "May I ask you to help me do that, just this once?" Annie and Anya stare on as they listen to Loid's scheme into getting Yor to agree to marriage.
"If you really think I can pull it off, then I'd be happy to help." Yor smiled at Loid, and he returned it.
"Then, see you on Saturday for the party!"
"Great!"
A few days passed since that meeting, and Loid had to go shopping. He trusted Annie to watch Anya, as she was the older of the two. It was convenient that Annie was old enough to watch Anya without much of an easy. Time fled quickly, and it was Saturday in no time. Anya wasn't completely sure what had happened, all she knew was that Loid came back that night explaining that Yor would be moving in on Monday. Annie, of course, knew what had happened due to her otherworldly knowledge. Thinking that made her feel cool.
On Saturday night, Annie tossed and turned all night. It was rather difficult considering everything, and she eventually decided to get up at 3:43AM as she couldn't get back to sleep anyways. She stood up, and grabbed the only clothes she really had. A pair of warn panties that she had from the lab, and a worn dress. She had been sleeping in the t-shirt that Loid had given her during the whole... kidnapped situation. She grabbed her clothes, ratty but clean, and headed to the bathroom. She placed her clothes on the sink, and turned on the hot water.
When she stepped in, she felt the stress washing off of her. This, of course is only a temporary solution. She would eventually need to find a better way of coping with her stress. But for now, this was the best option. She began washing her hair, thankfully the dye set in really well. When she was done, she turned off the water and stepped out, wrapping a towel around herself to dry off. Before she had a chance to do anything though, she saw her again.
She felt her heart stop, and her stomach began twisting. She turned slowly to look into the mirror, and there stood the girl again, acting as her reflection was the girl who looked eerily like... me. She looks like me, it doesn't make sense I shouldn't look like this anymore! I reached up to my hair and grabbed the tips of my hair, pulling it forward to look at it. Just as I thought, my hair was long and pink. What is going on? Who is this girl and why does she look like me? Okay... I need to calm down... I felt my breath quickening faster than I could react, I pulled my hands up to my chest and felt the pounding of my heart against my chest. My eyes began to well up as I got flashes of my life, my father, my stepmother, my brother... I hated them, why do I miss them? I felt the icy fingers wrap around my heart, sending shivers throughout my body despite feeling overheated. I couldn't breath; it was all too suffocating, I cried out, sobbing.
Suddenly, I remembered something my therapist taught me. I rushed over and turned the water on, letting the cool water run over my hands, focusing only on the presence of the water, I closed my eyes and ignored the sound of sobbing and whispering that was filling my ears. I leaned down and took more breaths, I mean... she... she leaned down and took more breaths, successfully pulling herself out of the panic attack.
Inexplicitly, when she looked up to look at the mirror again, the girl was gone. She only saw her own reflection, she was relieved to see her long pink hair and blue eyes now. She began to feel better as her heartrate slowed, and she continued drying herself off. Quickly changing into the worn clothing she had brought into the bathroom with her, she walked out and began getting stuff ready for breakfast.
When Anya and Loid woke up, the table had already been set and there was food placed elegantly in the middle of it. Sat at the table, waiting patiently was Annie, although she seemed a little... different... I- She felt kind of blank, and that came out in her behavior. She smiled at them, and invited them over. They all ate in complete silence, it was unreasonably awkward, and none of them really had an answer for why.
After they finished eating, Annie quickly cleared the table and they headed towards the boutique to pick up the outfits. They arrived quickly, which Annie was happy about since she was kind of in a rush to get this stuff over with. Anya got a few new outfits. While Annie got a few more.
"... Papa, why does Annie get more dresses than me?!" Anya protested, and despite how this might actually look, it's for a good reason. Loid turned to look at Anya, who seemed to be very upset.
"Well... that's because elementary schools don't usually have school dances. Annie, since she's in middle school, will." Loid's words brought Annie out of a serious thinking session she was in. Middle School? Again? Urgh. Hopefully this time isn't as bad as last time.
After getting the clothes, they loaded them up and headed home. The rest of the day went by super quickly, and before she knew it, it was time to go to bed. It took a while, but eventually Annie drifted off to sleep despite her discomfort.
'... "You don't understand!" I protested, but as usual my fears, worries, and now even this was falling on deaf ears. I'm not sure what they expected, I had come to the principal about the bullying before. But, as usual nobody ever does anything about it. I sighed as I looked down, feeling my father's disapproving eyes burning a hole through me. I did feel something different for once though, pity. Specifically from my stepmother, which was strange considering that she was usually very much against me.
"I'm sorry, but if this behavior continues, I'll have to continue on with suspension." The principal said, and then to my surprise, something happened.
"Now wait a moment!" My stepmother cried out, surprising everyone in the room, including my father. "She and I may not always see eye to eye, but she was clearly being bullied!" She exclaimed, gesturing to me and my body.
"Well... we have no-" The principal tried to protest, but my stepmother wasn't having it.
"No evidence my butt! The poor girl is literally covered in dried milk!" She yelled, and then walked behind me and placed her hands on my shoulders. "Whatever, don't bother with the suspension. We'll be pulling her out of school effective immediately." The principal tried to protest, and then my stepmother led me out of the room.
"I paid my daughter's tuition in advance, I expect to be refunded in full." I heard my father say before he followed us. I felt tears welling up in my eyes, it was strange to have somebody on my side for once.'
When Annie woke up, it was 8AM. She slept in, the first time in awhile. She stood up while she thought about the dream she had; it was simply that. A dream. Back in her past life, that wasn't actually what happened. Her father and stepmother immediately sided with Ava and the school, and then sent me away. I didn't blame them, they didn't get the full story. Of course, they would've if they just listened.
Annie stood up completely, she had to wonder if her sleeping in had to do with the pleasant dream. Or perhaps it was because she was no longer wearing the ratty t-shirt, but instead was dressed in a silk nightgown. It was very covering, while also being flattering. It was nice to have new things, even in my past life I didn't get that. But Annie does, all because she reincarnated into the right place. Lucky her. Despite her thoughts, she walked to her closet and pulled on one of the new outfits Loid had bought her. Since they didn't need to go anywhere important, Annie opted to go for a white button up top, and a flowy dark blue skirt. She slipped some socks on and folded them at the ankles, kind of like how Usagi from Sailor Moon did. only without heels. Instead, she wore black mary-jane styled shoes. And at that, she walks out of her room to go eat breakfast.
A few hours later, after eating and talking to Loid and Anya, the doorbell rang. They all walked to the front door, this was it. It was time to welcome 'Mama' to the family.
