Author's Note: Ok People! Another chapter...yeah! Don't be soo shocked! There's going to be an emotional roller coaster in this one guys! Hope you like it all the same!
Julie knew something had happened the minute she had walked through the door with Randy.
She had walked through this apartment's door for over 6 years now.
Never had she seen Monk keep glancing at her mother, and her mother completely avoiding eye contact with him.
This most definitely was new.
Julie blew out a breath as she went to the couch and sat on one end of the couch.
Obviously her mother was all over her trying to see if John really had only grabbed her by her throat, but Julie saw that she was avoiding the man she had dedicated her life to these past years and knew it wasn't because of John Night.
Every time she looked over at Monk she could see that look on his face he normally had when he wanted to say or do something and was trying to stop himself from doing it.
Julie had seen it too many times for her not to recognize it.
Usually her mother was slapping his hands or pulling on him to stop whatever it was he was doing or wanted to do.
But when she would glance over at her mother, her mom looked like she wasn't paying attention to him at all.
Almost like she was pretending he wasn't even there.
Julie knew that wasn't going to last long.
"Ok. McKiernan is downstairs along with Padalecki and Ackles. No back entrance to the apartment building so we don't need to watch the back door. Sanchez is monitoring your house just in case Night does attempt to go after Julie or you again." Randy said as he flipped closed his notepad and looked up at Natalie who was standing in the kitchen making sandwiches for everyone.
Monk knew which was his as Natalie had already cut it into four small squares. Several times now he had stopped himself from reaching over and moving her hair that was stuck between her shirt and back. His eyes kept going back to her body no matter how much he tried not to look at her.
Her hair glowed with the light coming in from the kitchen window and Adrian was fascinated by the sight. She had on the same clothes form earlier and his body now knew from memory what she felt like against his skin in every possible way.
His shoulder twitched up and he tilted his head and rolled his shoulder back.
Trying to stop himself from touching her was a completely different thing than not wanting to be touched.
Adrian had only ever felt this for one person.
The idea of never touching her again was now in the very forefront of his mind as he had tried to reach for her just before Julie had walked into the apartment and Natalie had jerked away.
Natalie had never done that.
Not once had she jerked away from him.
"What do you want to drink Randy?" Natalie asked as she went to the fridge and instantly Monk was up.
"Water! Water's good. It's...It's healthy!" Monk pointed at the sink as his selfish cheap mentality took the wheel, but Natalie still didn't look at him which made Adrian go around her to retrieve a glass from the cupboard and fill it at the sink.
Natalie though remained at the fridge and began to list off what was available. "There's Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Fruit Punch, and Summit Creek bottled water."
"NO! Randy likes water! Regular...water...right Randy?" Adrian smiled as he turned off the tap with his glass of water half filled.
Randy looked over at Julie sharing a look and both then glanced between both Natalie and Monk.
"Um...Fruit Punch if you got it." Randy said completely oblivious to the anger Natalie was feeling and the cheapness of Monk trying to get him to drink from the tap.
Natalie snatched the Fruit Punch and everyone winced when she closed the fridge door a little to hard.
It caused Monk to roll both of his shoulders as she grabbed a glass and filled it all the way to the brim and handed it to Randy who was placing it on the dining room table next to his sandwich when Monk yelled out.
" COASTER! RANDY! COASTER!" Monk began to yell. Indicating with his finger at Randy who had been about to place the glass directly onto the wooden surface, to the coasters on the island.
"Coaster!" Randy immediately said as his eyes tried to figure out where the things were before Monk lost it more, but in Randy fashion looked on the dining room table and not on the island.
"Coaster!" Adrian repeated as he saw Randy about to place it down again.
"Mr Monk calm down! I'll get it!" Natalie yelled out about to grab a coaster herself as Randy in a panic of turning to look for the coaster sloshed the liquid onto himself. He jerked back and on instinct placed the overflowing glass down and immediately the liquid sloshed over and fell onto the table.
"NAPKIN! NAPKIN! NATALIE! NAPKIN!" Adrian grabbed the whole stack of napkins and was about to literally use half of all his napkins when Natalie placed herself between him and the dinning room and yelled out.
"ADRIAN!"
Monk immediately stopped and looked almost shocked at Natalie who was glaring at him with such anger he immediately lowered his hands full of napkins and blinked several times at hearing Natalie yell his first name. It was beyond out of the ordinary.
But one look in her angry eyes and Monk was blinking faster and retreating back a few steps.
"I said I will take care of it! SIT. DOWN." Natalie's commanding with a booming voice that had Monk nodding his head like a child and as Natalie walked towards him he walked backwards into the living room and barely missing Julie. Falling back on the couch he stared at Natalie. Funnily...he had taken the napkins with him on his way to sit down.
Natalie yanked them out of his hand making Monk flinch back but his eyes continued to look at her very angry eyes.
Julie's eyes had gone wide the second she heard her mom yell. It was even strange for her mom to lose it like that.
She most definitely was going to keep her mouth shut, if Mr. Monk was getting yelled out like this.
Adrian kept blinking as he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Natalie said nothing as she turned back around and went to the table and with one napkin wiped up the spill.
"Here Randy. Use this on your shirt. God I hope that doesn't stain!" Natalie said with a grimace and began to dab at the shirt herself as Randy looked down and stared at his shirt.
"It's ok. After all...it's my fault. Clumsiness in Monk's house really don't go together." Randy said a little ackwardly as he glanced at Monk and Julie distractedly taking the offered napkin from Natalie's hand and looking down at the mess on his shirt, he began to press the dry napkin onto the shirt.
Meanwhile Julie shifted and scooted over towards Monk who forgot about Natalie completely as out of the corner of his eye he saw the very dark bruised imprints of fingers around Julie's neck as she moved closer to him.
All thoughts of the spill left him as Julie whispered. "You really got mom mad. She never yells at you like that."
Adrian lifted one hand up as he looked at Julie. Now he could most definitely see how John had grabbed her and the anger that filled him...well...Julie saw the fire in his eyes immediately.
"It's my fault." Monk's anger giving way to guilt as he stared at the evidence of his failure to protect Julie. "I should have been there. I...I shouldn't have left you alone with him." Monk's hand closing into a fist as he dropped it and looked down into his lap as the feeling of being useless filled him.
Julie watched him hang his head shaking it as he felt his anger surge. He was hearing John's voice in his head about what he said about Julie and Natalie.
"No! Mr. Monk...if...if Benjy hadn't forced me to tell you I wouldn't have!" Julie shook her head and looked at him with her innocent blue eyes. " I don't want to be the reason you can't get reinstated! I know how much that means to you! And I didn't want you to resent me or be angry at me."
"Woahwoahwoah...woah." Monk waving his hand for her to stop at the confusion that hit him at her words.
He stared at her with shock and a dropped mouth as her words bounced around in his head and left him with a dried mouth.
"What...what makes you think...that...I'd be angry at you? Or resent you?!" He used his hand to point at himself as he then stared at her with a furrowed brow.
When she had asked earlier if he was mad at her, he thought she meant because of her THINKING she had placed herself in a dangerous position and because he had said he didn't trust Night. But...this was different.
This was her saying she was afraid to...make him angry. That she thought somehow he would RESENT her.
Julie shrugged both of her shoulders in a little motion as she looked at him with a slightly opened mouth and a look of sadness on her face.
"I didn't want to get you angry at me. Sometimes you get really angry and do and say things..." Julie stopped talking as she saw out of the corner of her eye, her mom had stepped into the hallway and was looking at her almost in shock.
Monk was doing the same as he heard her words. His heart suddenly felt like it had been placed in a vice. The idea...the concept...that Julie had been more afraid of him...than John. The idea... the idea that she wouldn't have said anything, because...she was more afraid of him...
Adrian help up his hands again.
"Waitwait..." Adrian almost whispered the words as he stared into Julie's worried eyes, as the full implication of her words hit him.
"Julie!" Natalie's face showed her complete shock at what her daughter was saying.
"You're afraid...of me?" Adrian barely could ask as his throat constricted at the thought ever being true.
Julie saw the look all three adults were now giving her and with a squeaky hoarse voice said, "No! No. Not like...not that kind of scared. I don't think you'd hurt me...like that! But...I'm...I'm afraid that if I say the wrong thing or upset you that you'll..." Julie held back her tears and both Natalie and Adrian saw how she quickly sobered herself.
For the first time that day Adrian wanted to shrink into a ball and disappear when he realized that Julie was holding back her feelings...because of him.
"Sweetheart how could you ever think that!" Natalie said and quickly moved towards her daughter when Julie turned her head towards her mom.
"Mom I can't even hug him. He...he gets all stiff and," Julie turned her head back and looked at him and that's when Adrian saw the tears filling her eyes, "I'm afraid to cry in front of you! I'm afraid of making you uncomfortable and I don't want to do that because I love you! I know you hate germs, and you hate touching people but today all I kept thinking when I hugged you earlier is he's going to..." Julie stopped herself from saying 'freak out,' but the implication was clear as day.
"Julie..." Natalie's voice saying her child's name as if she herself was in pain at what her little girl thought, as she went and kneeled next to Adrian and pushed Julie's hair back and tucked it behind her ear "Sweetie why didn't you say anything earlier?".
"You were..." Adrian swallowed the lump in his suddenly very dry throat, "more afraid of me...than John." The statement made Julie wince and look away ashamedly.
"No." Julie shook her head slightly. " I...I don't want to hurt you Mr. Monk. I love you." Julie said, knowing that he didn't understand she didn't want to cause his phobias to go off the charts because of her.
Adrian felt his heart lurch. His fear of letting himself love her with the fear of losing her was massive with everything happening.
"I love you too."
The whispered words made Julie stare at him as if she hadn't heard him. The look in her eyes showing such doubt that Adrian wanted to slap himself. Out of everybody...Julie really didn't think he loved her. The absurdity of that was...too much.
Adrian opened his mouth as though he were cracking his jaw and then closed his eyes as tears fell, when he opened his eyes looking into Julie's face he knew in this moment he needed to take the risk.
He didn't want to lose Julie. Even with everything with Natalie...he couldn't stomach the idea of Julie out of his life forever.
" I'm...I'm just..." Adrian's hands turning towards his chest and his hands began to shake as he put one hand against his chest and he tried to keep from crying.
Closing his eyes a second he opened them and nodded his head few times, "You're more important...then any...career. Or...my...my fear. You're..." Adrian stopped and reached out his hand and pushed the other side of Julie's hear back behind her ear, "You're my Julie."
Julie's just looked in his eyes and found whatever it was she was looking for. Adrian saw the moment she did as he saw her eyes begin to water once more, and the next second she was squeezed against his chest tucking herself against him. The sudden sensation of her letting out a sob hit his frame and Adrian squeezed his hands into tight fists as he closed his eyes and for the first time no voices told him to jump away.
He closed his arms around her and the sound of her cries made Natalie immediately start to cry and caress her daughter's back and hair as Adrian Monk began to rock Julie like she was a child.
Adrian just held her and rocked side to side as Natalie rained down kisses on her daughter's head, crying as her daughter finally broke down.
But Monk knew that for Julie to be reacting like this that she hadn't told them everything.
He could feel it in his bones. Knew from the way John Night had looked at him. The look in his eye that said he had already stoked a fear in Julie.
"Julie..." Adrian whispered, "did John touch you? Did...die he..." Adrian couldn't complete the question. The anger in his chest that he could have touched her making everything in him vibrate from the emotion.
Julie was still crying against him. But the nodding of her head was felt and Adrian had to squeeze his eyes tightly as the rage in him reached epic proportions.
Randy's eyes widened seeing Julie nodding against Monk. He walked closer to the trio and watched as Natalie pulled back with a look of horror on her face and Julie with a face full of tears sniffling to keep her snot from getting anywhere near Monk.
Monk couldn't have cared less in that moment.
Adrian's insides felt like a volcano as he waited to hear what she would say. He felt Natalie's hand gripping his leg and couldn't fault her as she waited to hear what the man had done to her daughter.
"He ah..." Julie hesitated, sucking in a breathe and breathing out - not really looking at Monk but her lap, "he forced me to kiss him. That's...that's why he held my throat...so tight."
There was silence. No one said anything.
Natalie felt like her heart was going to beat out of her chest.
"I tried to get him off me...but he just held me tighter. He...he let go...and told me not to say a word." Julie looked up but kept her head down as she said one more thing. "He threatened me with you and mom."
"Oh baby..." Natalie said and pulled her daughter into her hold and began to kiss her cheeks and head as she cried.
"I'm gonna kill him." Adrian's anger at the idea that the scum had forced himself on Julie.
Randy quickly pulled out his cellphone and made his way out of the apartment. "Cap Julie just confirmed it was a sexual assault. Yea-What? When? How?" Randy's eyes going to side to side as he heard the captain curse and then tell him that Night had been escorted out by an attorney.
Randy closed his eyes and braced himself.
He knew he was going to have to tell Julie that Night was out on the streets. He didn't look forward to the look in Natalie and Monk's eyes.
The captain spoke again and Randy nodded his head as if the captain could see him. "Yes sir."
As he was listening to the captain he saw Dr. Bell walking towards him and mentally sighed at the arrival of the psychiatrist.
"Will do sir. Dr. Bell just arrived." With those words the captain issued an order and Randy immediately acquiesced. "Yes sir."
Dr. Bell had just made his way over when Randy held out his cellphone to Dr. Bell.
Dr. Bell's face took the phone with a curious glance at Randy but assumed nothing as he spoke. "Captain?"
Dr. Bell listened to Leland and as he did his eyes went to Randy in shock as the young man just looked down and then back at the doctor with a look that showed just how very true and serious the events that had occurred were.
Dr. Bell hearing the details felt himself go stiff. "When did it happen?"
Leland answered him and Dr. Bell looked up at Randy as he took in everything the captain was saying.
Dr. Bell nodded. "I agree. Yes. Leland I promise you I will."
Randy waited patiently as he kept an ear open to what was happening in the apartment.
"Yes of course. I'll speak with you tomorrow." Dr. Bell handed the phone back to Randy who quickly finished up the call with the captain, and immediately opened the door for Dr. Bell.
When Dr. Bell entered and saw how Julie was clinging to Adrian with Natalie pressed against both he closed his eyes and had to steady his own emotions.
Seeing Adrian disregarding his phobias even for a short while told him all he needed to know on how serious the situation truly was.
Dr. Bell slowly approached and placed his hand on Natalie's back gently causing her to go stiff and whirl around, but immediately calmed as she saw who it was.
"Dr. Bell..." Natalie sniffed and wiped at her eyes.
"Natalie. Adrian?" Dr. Bell watched as Adrian Monk's tear stained face and eyes turned and looked at him.
The way Adrian looked at him, Neven had never seen the hate in Adrian's eyes before.
It was as though all of the pent of anger in his life was surging through him in the moment, and when Julie pulled back from Adrian when she heard her mother Neven saw the evidence on the girls neck. Then he had to hold back his own anger as he saw the now dark purple marks on the incredible pale skin.
Julie sniffled and was pulling back, and made like she was about to get up when Adrian didn't let go of her and as gentle as he could held her as he himself stood and Natalie moved to take his place as if they had coordinated the shifting of their bodies.
Dr. Bell was intrigued by it though, making a mental note to think on later.
What Neven didn't expect was Adrian motioning with his eyes to follow him.
When Dr. Bell entered into the bedroom and Adrian closed the door he had expected Adrian to say one thing...but not what he actually said.
"Dr. Bell I'm fine...I...I don't need to talk to you but..." Adrian motioned at the closed door with his hand splayed, "but if...if you could...I...I need you...Julie needs..." Adrian was trying to explain what had occurred.
Neven cleared his throat. "Adrian I just talked with the captain. He told me...what happened."
The way Adrian was looking at him - Neven had only seen when Adrian had talked about Trudy. It made the doctor understand that something had been said that had deeply disturbed Adrian Monk.
Monk weaved his fingers together and began twitching even as he cried in a stance he normally held ramrod straight but now it seemed that a slight breeze could knock him over, " I think she needs to talk with someone." Adrian said as his hands shook together and he bit his upper lip.
"Adrian you don't have to ask." Dr. Bell said holding up his hand and shaking his head.
"I'll pay you!" Adrian immediately said, thinking Dr. Bell was refusing the work.
"No! Adrian I mean I'm more than willing to talk with Julie. Help her with any emotional or physical trauma and..."
"She's afraid of me." Adrian interrupted Dr. Bell.
The statement of course instantly made Dr. Bell stare at Adrian.
Adrian bounced his hands as he did when he was nervous. "She said...she was more afraid...of me getting angry...then...then of that man that..." Adrian couldn't stop his face from showing how angry at himself he was, "that did that to her. She...she said she wouldn't have told me...if it wasn't for Benjy." Adrian couldn't look at Dr. Bell in the eye after repeating what Julie had said.
Dr. Bell stared at Adrian as if he was slightly shocked but then Dr. Bell moved closer to Adrian and ducked his head to be in Adrian's line of sight.
"Adrian..."
"She's afraid of me." Adrian repeated again and looked straight up into Dr. Bell's eyes. Cutting off whatever Dr. Bell wanted to say to him.
Dr. Bell took a moment and then let out a sigh and slowly placed his hand on Adrian's shoulder. "Adrian...I barely know that girl but I can assure you one thing. Between her mother and you, she was holding onto you for comfort a few moments ago."
Adrian let a tear fall from his eye as he looked at Dr. Bell.
Neven continued even as he saw the sadness not leave Adrian's eyes. " I assure you Adrian, if she were truly afraid of you she wouldn't have wrapped herself around you and told you how she felt. In a moment of true weakness...she needed you. The very fact that she did...means she trusts you with the most important thing she could trust you with!"
Adrian looked at Dr. Bell, not understanding what he could possibly be talking about.
Dr. Bell put his other hand over his chest. "Her heart Adrian. She trusted you with her heart!"
Monk just stared a little shocked at Dr. Bell, who without another word exited the bedroom.
Monk stood there and tried to let what Dr. Bell make him feel better about what Julie said.
It didn't.
To know...to know that Julie loved him like a father...and to know that she was more afraid of his anger than that...monster...
Monk closed his eyes and with a calming breath separated his hands and lowered them.
He wasn't going to be like his father. He wasn't going to just abandon her when she needed him most.
Adrian sucked in a huge breath and forced the breath out of his body.
Julie needed him. And he would be there.
He would be there for her.
His own demons be damned.
Adrian turned around and rolled one shoulder before he opened the door and went back to the girl who needed him.
