Chapter 9 Joshua and the Doctor
Joshua was leading his group through the woods as well. He heard a noise. One of the army soldiers heard it as well.
"Mr. Bolt sir! We are going to have to stop here. I think there may be another pack nearby?" Joshua nodded. Dr. Green was with them, and he had heard it as well.
"There it is again. That does not sound like a wolf coming through?" said Dr. Green, then one of his soldiers pointed and went around to see if he could outflank whatever was coming at them. They stood still and waited, the noise was louder now, it sounded like someone crashing through bushes. The darkness of the night did not help anyone nerves. Just then someone stumbled into the small clearing and landed on the ground.
"Oh, please help me, a wolf, the leader a female wolf with cubs is trailing me! I have to get out of here, she will kill me! Oh! Help please!" the man said. Joshua helped him up and Dr. Green recognized who he was.
"So, Dr. von Sydow, please to meet you finally! I was wondering when we would happen upon you. You will take us to your lab won't you?" The man looked at Dr. Green, he stood there a moment and then spat at the ground and said:
"I will never be taken by the likes of you!"
"That is fine, there is a wolf chasing you, I can tie you to a tree and leave you to her!" Dr. Green said. Dr. von Sydow shook in fear. This was not in his plan. He said:
"Well, Dr. Green, you may do that, but I believe Army regulations would have you court martialed for that, now wouldn't they?" Dr. Green looked at him and said nothing. He nodded to his soldiers and said:
"Tie him to the tree!"
"Wait a minute Dr. out here there is still law, and a man is innocent until proven guilty!" Joshua said, not knowing what he had done to his brother and Candy. Josia said to Joshua:
"Joshua, you are right, there is law, but sometimes the pain, that comes from one's own tragedy, is too much to bear and wants revenge. Okay, tie him up we will take him with us!" He walked away from the doctor and Joshua. The doctor knew full well what Josiah meant; he had been there on the plantation when his father was tied to a tree as a pack of wolves attacked him. He had watched as a boy and had cried dry tears. But, if Joshua knew what he had done to Jeremy and Candy, perhaps Joshua too would tie him to a tree and let the wolves have him.
Jason and Aaron had rested and decided to see the wolf pups, knowing they would have to shoot the pups as well as the mother. They walked silently towards the sounds. Just as Jeremy and 'Candy' were doing.
Suddenly there was a shout, some of the soldiers who had been shooting wolves were surrounded by the wolves themselves. Jason and Aaron left to help the other men. Jeremy was going to help as well, but 'Candy' said to him in a whisper:
"Jeremy, not yet, soon, my love, soon!" he stood for a moment not sure what to do, then whatever drug she had given him, kicked in and he went back to stalking the wolf and cubs.
The fires lit the night sky, the moon, came out, it was a full moon, one that wolves and coyote's almost always howl at. Those wolves who had not been in the pack but had packs of their own howled at the lonely moon the stars had not come out, so between the firelight and moonlight it was almost like daytime. Candy and the wolf pups started to walk away from their little hideaway and found shelter in a small crevice. There they lay down and slept.
Doctor Green got back with Dr. von Sydow and had him placed in chains until such a time as they could get to his cave. Jason and Aaron came in to the camp as well. They saw Joshua and the other doctor.
"You know, Mr. Bolt I am grateful that you saved my life. I would have died not know if my research had really paid off. Do you know what I was researching?" Joshua looked at him and said:
"Well, not really but if it was legitimate I am sure it will pay off.!" Joshua said as he took a drink of water.
"I will tell you what it was about, you see, I have studied wolves and wondered if man might not have evolved from wolves. I know that some think they might be from monkeys, but we know that is not true. Not real man. Know, we evolved from Wolves, great howling beasts that are dangerous yet family oriented. So, I decided to study wolves. Oh, they are a wonderful breed! Their pups are like small children but when they area grown, they are intelligent and know what to do and when to do it!" He looked at Joshua who was just resting and drinking his cup of coffee. He had been asked to sit by this man while dr. Green and his team tried to figure out where his headquarters were at.
"You know Joshua, they aren't' going to find anything. I destroyed the lab. It is up in those caves. The very ones that you and your brothers played in at one time. But, I blew it up! Oh, I have all my notes, I put them in a bank in Tacoma! I am so smart, you see, I will tell you one more secret do you know that I have a daughter?"
"Ah, no, I did not!" Joshua said trying to be polite.
"Oh, I do, she has auburn hair and blue green eyes, When we came out her, she had a glimpse of a young man, brown hair, blue eyes, he was quite young, at the time. Since then, she had her heart set on him. Then he took a long trip and came back with a girlfriend. Seems she had the same hair color and eye color as well!" Joshua had been almost falling asleep when he heard the comparison. He looked at the doctor and waited for him to say more.
"Anyway, do you know why they look alike they are twins. Her mother had twins. It was a week or more when her mother found out she could not feed both of them. She sent the other girl, who they had named Aurora to a family to nurse until she was able to be weaned. Unfortunately, the family was my family. I became her father. Her mother had tried to get her back, but we my wife and I disappeared before Aurora was old enough to be weaned. She does not know this. All she knows is that I have been her father from birth. I do not know if she suspects it either. The closeness of their personalities would fool anyone. Even Miss Pruitt's fiancé!" at this Joshua rushed at him and was about to strangle him when Jason and Dr. Green stopped him.
"He knows where Jeremy and Candy are!" Joshua shouted. Dr. Green looked at him and said:
"I suspected as much…"
"Of you suspected it why didn't you tell me or Jason!" Joshua shouted. Jason held onto Joshua and looked hard at Dr. Green expecting a reply.
"I did not say anything because I wanted him to tell us where they are at? If they are alive or dead!" Dr. Sydow began to laugh.
"Oh, don't worry about your Jeremy, he will be alive, whether he will be himself or not is something entirely up to whatever drugs my daughter has given him. Also, if he kills Candy, which he certainly will do, he will of course be a broken man and Aurora will have her wish. He will be with her forever!"
"What do you mean forever!" Jason said ready to grab the doctor by the throat as well!"
"Oh, dear, Jason, you messed up my collar, now I won't tell you anymore. You might hurt me!" Dr. Green and a soldier stepped in, what do you mean he might kill you? What is the plan?" He looked at the other man, harder and more treacherous than Jason or Joshua could or would ever be. In a small whisper he said:
"I mean as soon as Jeremy has killed his fiancé Aurora will inject him with some more of the drug and they will go up to the cave. There they will be in bed and an explosion will take place. They both will die! And there will be no proof of anything that happened tonight, except that the government will have to cover up this incident and you Dr. Green and Dr. Johnson will lose your benefits and retirement!" He said with a great big grin.
