As soon as Jaune stepped out of the elevator he found himself face to face with a worried Summer, her eyes gleaming with worry and hands clutching onto his elbows with a fierce protectiveness that instantly made him relax, and for a moment he deluded himself into thinking that perhaps there was nothing to worry about and that soon he'd wake up from his weird dream and return to normality.
Eh. He couldn't be bothered. The world was this now, and there wasn't any point trying to deny it anymore. He couldn't go back, not now.
So he needed to learn. Needed to know what he might be up against and how to defend himself.
He had to trust the Circle to teach him the right things...and trust his friends and family to be there at his side when he needed them.
''Are you alright?" Summer asked worriedly, and Jaune nodded distractedly as he brushed his hand against the pocket of his jeans where his Scroll laid. Would he even get reception however far they were underground?
"I'm fine." Jaune answered with enough honesty she relaxed slightly...and with enough worry that her eyes narrowed at him for lying to her. "I just wanna speak with Mom is all."
"Once Blake has signed the Accords you guys can leave." Summer replied, a knowing look in her eyes as she squeezed his elbows slightly. "It would probably be best to not speak over the Scroll though."
"Probably." Jaune shrugged, gritting his teeth as he stared at the wall. "It just...stings you know? At least you only didn't tell because they asked you too. Plus, and no offence, you actually aren't my aunt."
"Just because I was adopted doesn't mean you can say that." Summer frowned, stepping away with a look of hurt on her face that shattered his heart.
"Y-You're adopted?" Jaune blinked, a confused frown settling over his face. "By who? I thought you didn't have a family?"
"He didn't tell you." Summer whispered, eyes wide, and Jaune felt his stomach plummet.
"Who didn't tell me what?" Jaune asked, and Summer shook her head before making to turn away from him.
"He must have had his own reasons-"
"Who didn't tell me what?" Jaune demanded, grabbing Summer's arm and not caring at the shift in the stance of the guard's around them. She waved them down, but he could feel their eyes on him as they practically bristled like well armed, angry porcupines. Summer turned around to face him, a calm look on her face.
"This will be discussed later Jaune. Now let go." She ordered, and Jaune felt a vein in his forehead tick. What was it with everyone he knew keeping secrets from him?
"I'm getting tired of my family lying to me Summer." Jaune replied, fighting to stay calm as a torrent of painful emotions that was starting to grow really old on him washed through him again, sweeping through his system like venom. "Please."
"I can't. Not now. But I will. I promise." Summer said, face softening slightly. Jaune closed his eyes, letting his head fall. His mother, his father, his sisters. Now Auntie Summer. Was Ruby next? At least his Uncle Tai couldn't lie to him. "Jaune? Let go please so we can go catch up with Blake. I...I will tell you. I don't understand why you weren't already, and it isn't anything groundbreaking like learning about the Supernatural, okay? Everything's fine."
"Yeah." Jaune managed to say, not trusting himself to say much more, knowing they'd be choked up by what he was feeling. He let her go, stepping past her and hurrying down the corridor. "Let's go find Blake."

Blake could only stare. She had not noticed it earlier due to all the drama and shenanigans that had seemingly popped up around Jaune one after the other, but the sheer variety of different species startled her.
There were things with things, tails with things and things with tails. Some were green, blue, red, black, pink, white, yellow, gold, gold-silver. Others had scales, feathers, horns, claws, talons, sharp teeth, blunt teeth, animalistic features, humaney features and everything in between.
"It's rude to stare." The red-haired Human female undeserving of ever having associated with Jaune said.
"Normally that's true." Added Ren, who Blake approved as Jaune's best friend. He clearly cared about Jaune and was willing to defend him, if the gun and armour was an indication of anything. "But newcomers get a free pass. Everyone gets overwhelmed one point or another by all this."
"I do not mean to be rude." Blake admitted, trying to reign in her curious looks, and feeling embarrassed by a group vine things laughing at her from across the hall. "It's just…a lot."
"Wiser words have never been spoken." Ren said, a small but warm smile on his face. "I said them too at one point. Pyrrha did as well."
"Staring is still rude." Pyrrha shrugged. "I just meant you should tone it down a little."
"Well, we're nearly there now." Ren said suddenly, and Blake stopped her retort to Pyrrha in order to let him speak and listen to his words. "This is the Main Hub. You and Jaune arrived here last night."
"It looks just as busy." Blake noted, taking in the sight and memorising it this time. Hundreds, maybe even thousands of desks and areas were all neatly arranged and ordered, and the sound of clacking, clicking and scribbling filled the air.
"This is probably the busiest area of Home Base." Ren said. "Or at least the most consistently busy. The only time this area isn't working is whenever the Grandmaster dies."
"Why is it so busy?" Blake wondered, and Ren offered a shrug.
"Administrative stuff mostly, not to mention most of the main entrances lead to here, and since it's so close to the Work Wing newcomers like you are processed here more often than not." Ren explained. "We better hurry before a rush happens."
"Rush?"
"There are times when the newbies come down all at once to get processed due to bad timing and luck. Sometimes we have to arrange these and they all end up overlapping. The result is the non-vehicular version of traffic." Ren told her, stepping forward and into the throng. Blake followed, making sure to stay close to him due to the business of the Main Hub. It was akin to suddenly entering a river, and the tide threatened to sweep her away and make her lost. "Not all of the signatories are newbies either, just neutrals who want to live a quiet life. They understand the Accords may not be the best thing but its a hell of a lot better than the chaos that happened before."
"Hello Ren." Greeted a big, burly creature with thin arms, bent legs, long horns and a bone face.
"Hello Whentworth." Ren greeted, and Blake watched the creature amble off. "Wendigoes aren't the most creative when it comes to names. I haven't met one that doesn't have a name beginning with 'W' so I'm glad I remembered his."
"Is he naked?" Blake mused, noting that he wore no clothing. Ren snorted with surprise, and behind her she heard Pyrrha stifling her giggles.
"N-No." Ren answered, recovering admirably. "Wendigoes don't reproduce naturally, they're the byproduct of dark magic and tragedy. As such they, and others like them, don't have privates that need covering up. It doesn't stop them from dating if you're interested."
"I am not." Blake said bluntly, and she saw Pyrrha, because trying to come up with ways of avoiding even thinking her name was getting old…and she was running out of them, stiffen tensely in the corner of her eye. "What do I need to know about the Accords?"
"When they were first created they were pretty generic, but over time became tailored to be more tailor made." Ren said as they continued on through the hustle and bustle. "This came at the benefit of drawing in a lot more Supernaturals who were originally distrusting of the Circle due to bad blood or rumour, but it means we now have to run an extensive bureaucracy. A lot of manpower is taken up by administration and whatnot these days, and an amalgamation of old and new laws governing the Circle means we're slow to act at the best of times."
"What does that have to do with the Accords?" Blake wondered, and Ren gave her an apologetic look.
"We don't have a specialised Accord for Shadowlings yet." Ren admitted. "You'll have to sign the basic Accord for now. It isn't bad, just means if something new crops up Supernaturally related, like some sort of power you evolve, you may have to sign a separate agreement to not do that thing or use it to hurt people."
"That sounds…okay." Blake shrugged. "Where do I sign?"
"Not here." Ren smiled, gesturing to the chaos around them. "Today looks like a busy day, so it would probably be best to do as Summer said and take you up to the Centre of Informal Information. It's basically an additional area used for Accord signatories when Main Hub and some of the extra space Admin's been given gets filled up, as well as…other things. It isn't well liked."
"Why?" Blake asked curiously, and Ren shrugged.
"They act like they're better than everyone else." He replied, pressing the button to summon an elevator. Blake felt a moment of fear, remembering the one she had been in the night prior. "Well, most of them do. The Circle is supposed to be Humanity and Supernatural working together these days. Some of the people at the Centre of Informal Information act as if they've forgotten, or don't even know, that."
"Humanity does not dwell on Remnant." Scoffed the great, terrible being dismissively. "Only a cheap copy. The real war for that species' soul is elsewhere…"
The thought came unbidden, and Blake pressed a hand against her forehead as pain lanced there.
"Are you okay?" Ren asked, and Blake nodded weakly, not wanting to worry him over nothing.
"I have a headache." Blake replied, letting herself show a wince of pain as the sharp, striking pain seared through her mind again. "It is a bad one."
"I'll fetch you some painkillers." Ren said, turning to Pyrrha. "Make sure no shenanigans happen up there. I don't want Summer killing us both."
"Why don't I go-" Pyrrha tried.
"Nope." Ren interrupted simply, turning around and hurrying away. "You too need to learn to get along."
"I like our relationship the way it is." Blake gritted out glaring at Pyrrha, who returned it.
"That is the one thing I'm likely to ever agree on with you." Pyrrha returned, green eyes blazing with vehement dislike. "I don't trust you or your intentions with Jaune."
"Considering you have already caused a great deal of emotional harm to Jaune, I agree." Blake returned, and Pyrrhas face darkened.
"You don't know anything about me."
"I know enough."
"Listen here you-" Pyrrha began, but the ding of the elevator interrupted them. The doors slid open smoothly, and a group of people quickly left it.
Pyrrha quickly boarded, and Blake tentatively followed suit, not wanting to be one-upped by Pyrrha despite the lack of an audience to impress. A Goblin made to enter the elevator, but when he saw the two girls glowering at each other within it he made the wise decision to spin on his heels and wait for another.
Pyrrha angrily slammed a button on a panel of many buttons, some different colours, and the doors slid shut. The elevator started to move, and Blake wobbled before getting her balance again. Pyrrha snorted, and Blake glared.
"What did that button do to you?" She demanded, and Pyrrha glared at her coolly.
"The same thing you are, it annoyed me."
"That makes more sense now. If you could be as despicable as to betray the trust of your mate then you are also likely to be the sort of person to lash out those who have done little to harm you."
"Shut up!" Pyrrha snapped. "You don't know me and you sure as hell don't know Jaune! Stop acting like you do!"
"Stop acting like your some sort of angel!"
"I don't!"
"You do! And don't think for a second I haven't noticed how you look at a Jaune!"
"Of course I look at him! He's one of my oldest friends!"
"You know what I mean you undeserving betrayer!"
"I told you to shut up!"
"Make me!"
The elevator dinged, but that didn't stop them from lunging at each other. Tendrils unfurled from Blake and lashed out at Pyrrha, whose fist was inches away from connecting from Blake's jaw.
Then they both froze.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Demanded a tall, authoritative blond woman who was pointing some sort of want at them.
Blake was too busy frozen and enraptured by the purple glow around her to respond. It felt nice in a weird way, and Blake felt a little trickle in her mind's eyes. Curious, she focused on it, pulling at it like a thread. The purple around her flickered, and the blonde woman narrowed her eyes at Blake.
"A Shadowling." She noted. "Hm. Are you the one who arrived yesterday with Summer's boy? Blake is it?"
The purple loosened slightly, and Blake found herself able to nod.
"Have you signed the Accords?"
She shook her head.
"You should know better than to sink to this Nikos." The blonde lady scolded, and Blake couldn't help but smirk a little as Pyrrha was told off. "Even if she was provoking you, engaging in fisticuffs with an Agent without having signed the Accord could have gotten Blake killed. You know this."
The blonde lady levelled a fierce glare at Pyrrha, and Blake instinctively stopped smirking out of the fear the blonde lady would notice and scold her too.
"Or was that your intention?"
Pyrrha shook her head thoroughly and after a few moments of stern glaring the blonde harrumphed and released them.
"This place will be the death of me." She sighed, stepping into the elevator. "Pyrrha, make sure Blake signs the Accords. Blake, don't think I didn't notice you smirking at her. Don't antagonise her. That goes for you too Pyrrha."
"Yes ma'am." Pyrrha said respectfully, making a hasty escape from the elevator. Blake followed suit and echoed her words and movement. The elevator doors slid shut, and Blake let out a sigh of relief as the numbers went down, and the scary lady went away with them.
"She's terrifying." Blake murmured, and Pyrrha glanced over at her.
"That's a second thing we agree on." Pyrrha admitted, turning around quickly. "Follow me. If we don't get the Accords signed soon I have a feeling Goodwitch and Summer will be after us."
Blake hurried after her, mind taunted by horrifying visions of that very occurrence becoming reality.
/#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/
"All you need to do is sign here." Smiled the bunny girl with kind eyes. Blake blinked and stared at the paper in front of her.
"Sign?" She asked, hating her lack of knowledge at the moment with Pyrrha watching over them.
"Your name." She explained kindly, and Blake stared at the paper. There was an empty line at the bottom, and she took the pen awkwardly. She had seen Jaune scribble things on paper before, but she had never done it herself and Jaune hadn't had the time to teach her yet. She had graduated teeth brushing, hair brushing, hair cleaning, skin cleaning and a few other things. Writing was not one of them.
Still, Pyrrha could probably write….so she needed to as well. She refused to allow her enemy to be better than her in any way!
So she picked up the pen and decided she would use the one writing technique she did know - texting.
The paper ripped as Blake stabbed the pen against it, feeling dismay as not a shred of ink was left behind. Why couldn't paper be as versatile as Scrolls?
'And as durable.' She thought, staring at the hole in the paper. She looked up and saw Pyrrha as well as the bunny girl who's name she hadn't remembered due to being too busy glaring at Pyrrha staring at her with shock.
"Blake….do you know how to write?" The bunny girl asked gently, and Blake looked down with shame, knowing she had ruined the bunny girl's paper out of petty jealousy towards Pyrrha.
"N-No." She whispered quietly, fiddling with the pen. The bunny girl moved so that she was next to Blake, and her warm hand wrapped around hers. Blake blinked and let the girl manoeuvre it. She removed the shredded paper and heaved a second pile onto the table, flicking through until she found the right page.
"Press down on this gold bit at the top." The bunny girl instructed warmly, a kind smile that matched her kind eyes on her face. She was like a cute, bunny girl version of Jaune, so Blake followed the instruction and blinked when the pen made a clicking noise. Jaune's pens didn't make clicking noises. Was this a good thing or a bad thing? "Now that the pen is ready, all you need to do is put it on the paper and apply a little pressure, like this."
The bunny girl guided Blake's hand to the paper, and she helped to gently guide it. Blake was not sure what she was doing or how, simply following the gentle motions of the bunny's girls hands over her own, and her eyes widened as her name appeared, scrawled in black ink over the paper.
"I can write!" She cheered, and the bunny girl giggled, taking the pen back and clicking it again.
"That you can." She said, taking the big paper pile. "I'll go file this. You're free to go, but you'll need to collect a certificate that says your a signatory before you leave Home Base. It's just at reception, and there's a card I can give you as well that'll fit in your pocket."
"Thanks Velvet." Pyrrha said, shaking her head with a bemused look. Even that could not remove Blake's good mood, and she wrapped the bunny girl in a hug to show her gratitude.
"I wish you all the best luck in your life Velvet!" Blake swore sincerely, deciding to make the hug better by wrapping her tentacles around her too. "If you need someone to kill for you, just call me! I am also willing to bake for you once Jaune teaches me how!"
"T-Thanks Blake." Velvet replied, and Blake could hear her heart thundering in her chest. That was a good thing right? "I n-need to go though."
"I apologise more sincerely than I ever have done to any person before now." Blake said, relinquishing her hold of Velvet, who stumbled slightly. "...Except for Jaune."
Velvet cast a strange look at Blake before seeming to stare at the wall behind her. Blake turned and followed her gaze to her tentacles, waving lazily in the air. When she turned back around, Velvet squeaked and ran away.
"Am I wrong in assuming she fled out of fear?" Blake asked, and Pyrrha nodded, much to Blake's relief. She was glad she had not frightened Velvet, but her curiosity took over quickly. Why had she run then? "Then why-"
"You don't want to know." Pyrrha interrupted, looking disturbed enough that Blake almost believed her. She decided to just wait and ask Jaune. "Let's get your certificate and we can just go."
"What about my card? Velvet said I could have a card too."
"You'll get it with your certificate."
"Oh…Why did Velvet-"
"I'm letting Jaune have that discussion with you." Pyrrha interrupted, a looking of suffering on her face. "Look, I have to meet Ren soon and do my rounds. Let's just hurry up."
"Your rounds?"
"Patrolling the streets. It disaudes would-be wrongdoers and if any Supernatural or Human needs help then we'll be right there and they can get help sooner it makes it quicker than having to go all the way to Home Base or call us and have to wait for us to get there."
"You patrol the streets?"
"Yes, I literally just said that."
"Do your rounds you say?"
"That's what its called."
"I'm sure that you do a satisfying enough job then."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Pyrrha glared, and Blake smirked smugly.
"Nothing! I won't tell your secret though, don't worry."
"What secret?" Pyrrha demanded, looking thoroughly annoyed with her.
"I may not be the best at writing, but I know how to operate a Scroll you know? I know what 'doing your rounds' on the streets means."
"Are you implying I'm a hooker?!"
"I'm not implying it."
"Well what are-"
"I'm outright saying it. Stating the truth, declaring a proclamation, espousing the reality of the situation."
"That's it you little-"
"What, may I ask, is going on here?" Interrupted a velvety voice that made Pyrrha stiffen as if she was actually just a plank of wood. Blake turned and saw a rather attractive woman with black heels, black tights, a black skirt and blazer over a white dress shirt and a red tie that seemed to drape over her chest. Black hair fell in waves over her shoulders, and Blake felt herself meeting eyes that were nearly as golden as her own.
"Nothing ma'am." Pyrrha replied with a tone of politeness that lacked the respect one normally would give to a person they respected. "Just taking Blake her to get her certificate and card for signing the Accords."
"Blake?" The woman asked, and Pyrrha nodded. The woman turned back to Blake, who felt herself stiffen. There was a strange, almost flirtatious look in the woman's eyes, and it put Blake on edge. "You arrived yesterday with Summer's nephew didn't you?"
Blake nodded stiffly, trying not to show too much dislike to the woman. She wasn't stupid, and if Pyrrha was showing her respect without actually having any it meant she was a high ranking something, and after all the shenanigans of the past few hours as well as the story Mrs Arc had told about her friend, Blake wasn't keen on angering someone with power inside the Circle.
That didn't mean she had to like her though, and the clear interest in her eyes at the mention of Jaune made it all too clear what was going on.
She had another rival for his affections.
"How interesting. I'm Cinder Fall, it is a pleasure to meet you." Cinder smiled, offering her hand to shake. Blake reluctantly reached out and shook it weakly.
"It is nice to meet you too." She nodded politely, and there was a slight twitch in the corner of Cinder's eye as she realised it wasn't quite as friendly as her own had been.
To Blake's minor annoyance, Pyrrha seemed amused by that, though she quickly schooled her face into a neutral look as Cinder glanced her way.
"I'm sure it is." Cinder remarked, rescinding her hand. Her eyes focused on Blake, and she felt a similar sensation to being trapped in Goodwitch's purple glow. She pulled on the thread, harder this time, as the sensation wasn't as nice as it had been before. Cinder winced, and the golden glue to her eyes seemed to fade slightly. She gave Blake an annoyed look. "Well, it's been nice meeting you, but as Director of Centre of Informal Information I'm very busy. I best be off now. I apologise for cutting this meeting short, and I hope to see more of you in the future."
"Likewise." Blake returned politely, and as soon as Cinder turned around she turned to Pyrrha. "Can I have my thing and my other thingy now?"
"Sure." Pyrrha shrugged, leading her to the desk where Velvet had been sat earlier. "Just wait here for someone to come out and explain the situation to them. I need to go now."
"What?" Blake blinked. "But how do I find Jaune again?"
"Just wait in the Main Hub for Jaune and Summer, and keep your certificate and card with you. Don't lose them. It'll take a while for replacements."
"But-!"
"Sorry." Pyrrha smiled, looking unapologetic. "I have my rounds to do remember?"
"But!"
"Bye~"
Blake stared as the elevator doors slid shut, suddenly away she was very alone in a very busy place that had lots of different people she could very easily offend because she had no idea what, or even who, they were.
"Maybe I shouldn't have implied she was a prostitute." Blake mumbled dejectedly. She turned around with a sigh, only for the elevator next to the one Pyrrha had entered to ding and open. Jaune quickly stepped out, followed by a Summer who looked visibly torn. Neither of them looked happy, and she rushed towards Jaune, scanning him for physical injury.
"Was meeting the Grandmaster that bad?" She inquired, after noting he was not physically injured. He smiled tiredly.
"Not really. I just have to do some blood tests, and there's something I need to talk to you about." Jaune said, and she nodded, stepping back to allow him some space, not wanting to seem too clingy.
"What?" She asked curiously, and Jaune scratched his head.
"I was offered to take part in a basic training course so I know how to spot, identify and, if need be, defend myself from Supernaturals." Jaune replied, and Blake remembered Velvet offering a course Blake had denied due to not wanting to be away from Jaune for long periods of time. "I think I want to sign up. I…It might be good if you join up as well. It could help us in future if we ever come across another Weiss Schnee."
"I agree." Blake nodded quickly. "I need my certificate and my card, and then I will ask to partake in their training thing."
"Sounds like a plan." Jaune smiled, and Blake was pleased to see he looked a little happier than he had been when he stepped out of the elevator. "Who knows? Maybe we'll be taking Ren and Pyrrha's jobs soon."
"That sounds…like a plan." Blake replied neutrally. She didn't want to say she wanted Pyrrha's job after implying she was a prostitute after all. "You should meet Velvet. She's almost as awesome as you."
"What?" Jaune blinked, and Blake took his hand and led him to the front desk, smiling as she saw Velvet leave a room behind it with a card and certificate in hand, though she looked somewhat haggard.
"Velvet!" Blake called, the she earned a nervous-seeming smile from the girl. "This is Jaune. Jaune this is Velvet."
"Nice to meet you." Velvet smiled, shaking Jaune's hand. "I've heard a lot of good things about you from Agent Rose."
"Good things, I hope." Jaune smiled awkwardly, and Blake noted that Summer had opted to stay where she was, fiddling with her Scroll rather than partake in the conversation.
'Did something happen?' Blake wondered, noting the awkwardness present between Jaune and Summer, as well as their unhappy moods, when they had stepped out of the elevator.
"Of course!" Velvet giggled, and Blake turned as she saw her hand Jaune a sheet of paper. "Just sign it to apply for the training course. Do you want to join now as well Blake?"
"Yes please." Blake nodded, taking the paper and the clicky pen, turning to Jaune with an excited look. "Watch this!"
She gritted her teeth with effort, eyes narrowing in concentration, and she prepared to impress Jaune with her impressive writing skills.
Only her hands didn't seem to work, and instead of 'Blake' she spelled something akin to 'BBLUUIKKE'.
"Another paper!" Blake demanded, tossing it to the side. She tried again.
"Another paper!" She demanded when she failed again.
"Another paper and a new pen! This one clearly doesn't work!"
She stiffened when she felt Jaune's chest brush against her side, and his warm hand wrapped around hers.
"Let me help, okay?" He instructed gently, and Blake nodded, focusing all her might on the pen and paper in order to distract herself from the blossom of warm feelings in her chest. His hand guided hers slowly, and she tried to focus on the movements and flourishes but found herself too distracted trying not to melt. He stepped away afterwards, and Blake found herself staring at the spelling of her name. "I'll teach you how to write when we get home."
"Sounds g-good." Blake barely managed to say, letting out a little squeak as she spoke that made her feel even more embarassed. Velvet giggled, taking their applications back before handing over her certificate and card.
"I suppose I'll see you too around." Velvet smiled, and Jaune nodded. Blake said goodbye, again, and then Summer was showing them to the exit. As a way to distract from her own embarrassment, and having forgot to ask until then, Blake turned to Jaune.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead." He smiled, turning to face her as they walked onwards through a tunnel leading to an exit.
"Velvet acted odd when she saw my tentacles." Blake said, and Jaune stumbled.
"Odd h-how?" He asked, and Blake felt worried at the concern in his voice.
"She turned red and stammered a lot before running away. Also her heart was very loud."
"You can hear that?" Jaune blinked.
"We were hugging." Blake replied, and Jaune turned pale. Ahead of them, Summer looked like she was about to vomit. "What?"
"Just…Lets just forget that ever happened, okay?" Jaune smiled, but even to here it was painfully forced.
"But-"
"It never happened." Summer said darkly, and Blake sighed, realising neither would tell her.
'I supposed this what the DustNet is for.' Blake thought, wondering what would come up when she searched for Velvet's symptoms. She hoped it wasn't some sort of deadly disease she had.
