well i'm back, had to take a few days to rest but i hope it hasn't been that long since i uploaded the previous chapter.

Edit: i'm am idiot and i didn't save the file with this chapter properly and had to write everything again AAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

A new path

"Good work today Alua"

Looking up from the table she was cleaning she saw Mr Takeo, already out of his uniform and putting a jacket on, as usual he was one of the last people to leave, only her and her boss would remain, to make sure everything was ready for the next day.

"Thank you Mr Takeo, you too, take care on your way home"

"Oh hey don't forget Rin will have another test for you tomorrow, so don't forget to study, she wasn't too happy about your last test's results."

Whatever emotion she was feeling before he said that was quickly replaced with a feeling of failure.

"I'm trying, i really am, but i always forget everything when i get here! i know i can't go on like this! i'll get fired one of these days if this keeps up." and she did mean that, everyday from the moment she woke up to the moment she started to get ready for work she spent looking at the books her boss had given her a few days after she started working at the restaurant, but no matter how much time she spent looking at them she simply couldn't understand them.

She looked up to Mr Takeo again and saw in his face a look of amusement before he let out a small laugh.

"Hehe, don't worry too much, if Rin wanted to fire you she would have done so weeks ago, and she wouldn't keep giving you those tests if she didn't think you capable of solving them, you'll get it, just keep at it."

Alua felt happiness swell in her chest, Mr Takeo was always kind to her and to hear from him that her boss had at least a bit of faith in her did make her feel like she could acomplish anything.

"Thank you, i'll do my best then! don't want to let her down again right?"

"Heh, right, anyway be careful on your way home, i'll see you tomorrow!" said Mr Takeo as he opened the door and Made his way out of the restaurant.

She waved her hand until the door closed behind him, leaving the place in almost complete silence, save for the noise she made and the occasional noise that came from the office.

The peace only lasted for about a minute before the door was slammed open

"WAAA!!!" she screamed as she turned to look at the door with her broom gripped tightly in her hands, she felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest from the sudden scare.

from the other side of the door Mr Takeo entered the restaurant, and hastily closed the door behind him.

"Mr Takeo? is everything alright?" after hearing that he turned to her, in his face a strange expression she couldn't identify, it only lasted for a second before his expression changed to a more relaxed one.

"Yeah i... i'm fine, just... i need to talk to Rin for a second alright? just keep working, i'll see you soon"

"oh... alright? good luck then." was the only response she could give, she found the whole situation strange but to be fair she had just known him for about two weeks, so maybe it was nothing.

he gave her a quick nod before quickly making his way to her boss's office closing the door behind him.

she considered going there to see if she could help him with whatever it was going on, but decided against it, it would probablly be rude to get involved after he told her everything was okay, besides both he and her boss seemed to be lifelong friends, whatever it was those two could handle it.

Rin was getting ready to go home, putting everything she would take home, she still needed to finish the latest test she would have Alua do.

That girl better have studied this past few days or so help her.

she still needed to wake the cat "Dusty" if she remembered correctly, who was sleeping on one of the chairs she had in her office, the cat was well behaved... most of the time only acting out of line when hungry or got too bored, luckily Alua bought a small mouse toy which the cat brought with him everyday and would keep him busy for hours at a time.

She's never really been an animal kind of person, often lacking the patience to deal with them, but as far as animals go she found this one... tolerable.

her thoughts were interrupted when Takeo came into the office, quickly looking around until his eyes found the cat asleep on the chair.

"Is he asleep?" asked her Takeo in a hushed voice.

"...yes? what's going on? and why do you speak like that?

"i don't want him waking up, we got a problem, it's about that girl!

"What? what are you talking about?"

"there are some police officers outside, the are here for her! and they also want to talk to you!"

"Did they tell you why?"

"No they just told me to come and get you... do you think she's like a villain or somethig?"

What? no! of course she's not!

"How do you know?"

"I just do!"

"But wha-"

getting tired of this argument she lifted her hand and gave him a very stern look.

"Look i'll talk with the police, get this all cleared up, then i'll talk to Alua, understood?"

She could see in his eyes that he was worried, and to some extent she could understand why, while Takeo is kind to everyone he is also only loyal to those he truly cares for.

He was kind to Alua because that is who he was but it'll ve a while before he really trusts her.

But she had seen somethig in that girl's eyes the day they met, Alua needed help, and she simply couldn't let her just walk away without trying to help her at least.

And so she left her office finding Alua washing the few dishes that remained in the sink, at hearing her door open she turned around to look at her.

"We're closing already! i just need a second, i'm almost done here!" said Alua as she washed a spoon as fast as she could.

"No, somethig came up, i'll be outside for a minute, would you mind waiting i'm here for the time being?" Alua gave her a confused look as she said that but nodded.

"Yes ma'am i'll be here then"

"Good, your cat is asleep in my office, i'll leave the door unlocked for you, if we're lucky this won't take too long" She told the girl as both Takeo and her were making their way to the exit.

"Thank you!"

She opened the door and Made her way outside closing it right after Takeo made walked out of the restaurant.

Turning around she saw two men in formal wear, both about the same height, the one on the left had short black hair and black eyes, pale skin and while not phisically imposing it was clear that he is strong, the one on the right was a bit thiner than his companion, with messy white hair, bright yellow eyes and darkened skin.

"Ms Nakamura? im detective Tsukauchi and my partner is detective Syd, we wish to talk to you about your most recent employee" said the man on the left while on his right hand he held a badge, extending it towards her, she gave it a quick look before nodding and turning her eyes back on to the men in front of her.

"Nice to meet you officers, but if you don't mind me asking, what do you want with Alua?"

"we just want to ask her a few quiestions, that's all" said the man on the right the one called "Syd" his companion speaking again right after that.

"Yes, a few weeks ago she got involved in an incident that ended up with her using her quirk to save a kid, she then approached my friend here but ended up running away before anything was truly solved"

"So she's a vigilante?" asked Takeo, who was by her side.

"We thought so at first but she's done nothing like that since that incident, and as far as we know no one matching her description or quirk has gotten involved in acts of vigilantism, but that presented another problem, we don't know who she is or where she came from, and she's also in possesion of a quirked animal so-"

"A quirked animal? what did she steal it or something?" interrupted Takeo but this time she gave him an angry look, he may not trust her but she's still a teenager, he couldn't just go around making asumptions and accusations like that about her.

"Well, we don't know, that's part of the reason we want to talk to her, we just want to make sure that cat's not-"

"Wait a cat?" it seemed it was her turn to interrupt "A black cat with a lot of "stars" all across his body?"

" Yes! that one you've seen it? asked tge officer on the right.

"He's in my office, but i think there's been a misunderstanding here, that's not a quirked animal, it's a part of her quirk"

"Are you certain? from our observations of the incident her quirk seems to be a form of flight"

"It is a weird quirk, i'll give you that, but she explained a bit to me after i hired her, she and the cat must stay close to each other for her flight to activate, whenever she uses her quirk like that the cat vanishes and only reappears after she stops using her power"

At hearing that Takeo took a long breath and looked relieved to the sky, and she could see the officers looked relieved as well, it seemed most of this situation was a bunch of misunderstandings piled up on each other.

"I must warn you, Alua has no memory prior to a few weeks ago, you can talk to her, but i'm not sure of how much she can answer to you, however i've got a question for you, why come here?"

"Well we don't know where she lives for one, but while in here we know where she is and when she'll leave, also she's a minor, and if she truly has no memory then you, Ms Nakamura might be the closest thing she has to a legal guardian for now, that's why we came to you" said Tsukauchi.

"... i'll let you two talk to her, but i want to be there too."

if you asked Alua how she felt in this particular moment she'd probablly say confused, a bit tired and just a little bit scared, of she was honest she'd probablly be terrified if It hadn't been for her boss not leaving her side this whole time.

She had finished washing the dishes and changed out of her uniform, and woke Dusty up so they could be ready to go home as soon as Ms Nakamura retuned.

but when she did she told her that they would have to go to a station with some police officers, and that they had some questions for her, if that wasn't scary enough they took Dusty away from her, her boss told her that they would return him to her once everything was cleared out but she was still nervous about the whole situation.

which led to this exact moment, they had arrived to the station, escorted them to a small white room with a table in the middle of it, Ms Nakamura was allowed ti go with her but Mr Takeo was told to wait outside.

They left them there and told them to wait, it had only been a few minutes but to her it felt like hours.

"Hey there you two, hope we didn't keep you waiting for too long" said one of the officers that was outside the restaurant, she didn't take a good look at them before, it was dark and she was honestly too scared to pay to much attention to them but now that she was here she recognized him in an instant.

"Wait a minute! i've seen you before! we met when i saved that kid" she exclaimed with joy, the circumstances were awful but at least he was a familiar face, or at least something vaguely similar to one.

"Nice to see you again kid, wish we met again in better circumstances but well beggars can't be choosers right?

"he hem, officer Syd do not forget why we are here" said a new voice she didn't recognize so she looked behind the now identified "Syd" to see a man with short black hair.

"Sorry sir! i'll let you do your job then"

"Thank you" he spoke to Syd before taking a seat in front of her, placing a bunch of papers on the desk. "My name is Naomasa Tsukauchi, i'll ve asking you some quiestions, answer truthfully, i'll know if you're not being honest with us ok?"

" ...Sure"

"Very good, what's your name?"

And at that she got really nervous again, for all she knew her name might not really be hers, or she might be remembering wrong, would that make her name a lie in his eyes? her thoughts were taking a negative turn when she felt a hand be placed on her shoulder, i was her boss, giving her an encouraging look.

"ehm... well... It's Alua... i think?"

"you think?" said the officer in front of her.

"I mean... i'm not really sure, i think i remember someone calling me that, but it's all so... confusing"

"Hmmm do you remember anything else?"

"Not really, not anything important at least... well just one... small thing really... but i don't know what it means."

"And what is that?"

"I remember the first thought i had when i woke up is that "There was another way" just that, but i have no idea what it means"

The officer began to take a few notes but he kept his eyes on her most of the time.

"What of that cat? where did you find it?"

"Oh Dusty? he was there when i woke up and followed me after that, i later discovered that he's my quirk!"

"And what is your quirk? how does it work?"

"Oh well i'm not too sure on how it works but i'll try to explain, Dusty turns into a sort of... mist? and dissapears, after that i can fly, and i can make some objects around me float as well, we can only do that for a short time, i get tired and Dusty needs to rest too, but if you're asking how a cat makes me fly or how that connects with other objects floating then i don't really know."

"Do you have any memory of any family member?"

"no"

"Why did you start to work with Ms Nakamura?"

"Oh well, Dusty and i found a place to live in, but we were having trouble getting food and water so i decided to find a job."

"Are you attending any schools?"

"uh... well... not yet but my boss told me to get ready for highschool before i started to work for her."

"Do you know which school will you be going to?"

"uhm, not really? i'm not doing so great in the tests Ms Nakamura has given me so far."

"Hey, why don't you become a hero?" asked Syd out of nowhere, she had almost forgot he was here.

"What? me? a hero?"

"Sure, your quirk sounds strong enough for it and think about it, if you become famous and appear on tv one day your family might recognize you and come to find you!"

"Wait really?" she asked in surprise.

"Syd! i'm not done here!" Said detective Tsukauchi in a stern voice.

"Right! sorry sir" replied Syd in a hurry.

If anything that little interaction seemed to calm her nerves more than anything, if one of the officers was allowed to joke around in here then everything was probably fine.

"Hey how about i call you"Kat?" i mean you've even got a quirk related to a cat, you know, like a nickname or something."

"So you want to call me "Kat"... because i have a cat...?"

"I mean, when you say it like that..."

Rin watched the interaction from the corner of her eye, the other guy "Tsukauchi" had finished his interrogation and asked her to talk to her and Takeo

"Well, she's being honest with us, she truly has no memory, and what little she remembers is not too usefull to us"

"So, what do we do now?" asked Takeo contrary to his previous attitide he seemed eager to help Alua in any way he could.

"Well, we will try to find anyone related to her for now, but while that happens i don't see a problem with her working with you at that restaurant."

"What if you find nothing?" She was honestly worried for that girl, she had been on her own for a few weeks by now and no one seemed to be looking for her, from her perspective only two possible answers existed for that, either the incident that erased her memory also affected her family, making them forget about her or even worse, no one was interested in looking for her.

Well she wasn't a cop or a hero, maybe one of them could manage to find another explanation for this, but it was the only two options she could see.

"Yes well, that's part of the reason i wanted to talk to you, could you consider helping her in getting to hero school like UA?"

"Your friend mentioned it, but why? what does she gain from becoming a hero in her situation?"

"Yes well, Syd didn't really mean that, but he's always got a knack for distracting people, Alua needed that distraction, she looked very nervous for the firs half of the questioning, but the comment has some merit behind it, a school like UA could help her find her home even if she ended un general studies they still have some big public events like the sports festival, if ther's anyone out there looking for her they might recognize her on tv, going to a hero school might also help us understand her powers better, we could find someone related to her if she inherited her quirk or a part of it from someone else in her family."

"...And what if none of that works either?" she asked while keeping Alua in her line of sight, don't get her wrong, if there's a chance they could help that girl then she would take it, but she couldn't keep the infinite number of "What if's" from her head.

"Well in an absolute worst case scenario she would still recieve the best education in the country, even if she only managed to get to the general studies department."

"And what of her act of vigilantism? won't that cause trouble for her in a school like UA?" asked Takeo.

"In a normal case perhaps, but since the circumstances are out of the ordinary we'll let her go with a warning this time, i also know and work with a big number of heroes, if any problems arise from this situation i am willing to contact the schools to clarify the situation."

"Thank you detective" said Takeo

"Agreed, i'll talk about it with Alua, see how she feels about this plan."

"Please do and contact me when you reach a decision." Said Tsukauchi while handing her a small paper with a phone number written on it. "now i believe we held you in here long enough, feel free to leave now, unless there's anything else you two wish to discuss?"

"I don't think so but thanks for everything."

"Very well then, oh one last thing you'll find the cat "Dusty" on your way out, an officer is taking care of him for now."

"Thank you once more, we'll take our leave then."

"Hey Alua! we're done here? let's go! we still have work tomorrow!" Said Takeo, getting the attention of both Alua and Syd.

Alua quickly got up from her chair and ran towards them.

"Hey Mr Takeo! Syd just gave me a nickname! i'm Kat now!"

"Yeah i heard, thought i heard you say it was a dumb nickname though." said Takeo while smiling to the girl in front of him.

"I mean, It is, Syd wasn't that smart about that one, but it's a nickname! and it's mine!!!!!" Said Alua while making small jumps of joy.

Rin watched this with a small smile, in normal circumstances a teenager getting this exited for a dumb name would be a little weird, but she had no memory prior to a few weeks time, by her own admission she wasn't even sure what her name was, but this nickname no matter how silly it was belonged to her.

"Alua, thank the officers for their time and go straight home alright?"

"Yes ma'am but hey could you call me Kat too?"

"Your friends may call you that if you want, but i'm your boss."

"Oh come on!"

"Don't push it, now do as i told you and remember, you'll do another test tomorrow! so don't forget to study!"

"Yes ma'am!" Said the girl while making her way thank both officers.

"Look at that! i was right! you do have a soft spot for "uneducated street rats" Said Takeo while giving her left shoulder a quick but light punch just like they used to do each other while still in school.

"You just punched your boss, if i fire you right now no one will know about that"she said with a smile while also giving him a punch on his shoulder.

"Hehe, hey ehm... sorry about being suspicious of the kid all along."

"You were just worried, i won't hold that against you."

"Still, you're the better judge of character, you've rarely been wrong, i should have trusted you."

"All's forgiven then you should go home too."

"What about you?"

"I'll wait for Alua when she leaves i'll go home too."

"Ok then, i'll see you tomorrow!" Said Takeo as he started to walk towards the exit waving goodbye at her.

She turned her eyes back to Alua, who was still talking to both officers.

She hoped Takeo was wrong about her ability to judge a persons character, she really did, because if not then she should probablly be scared.

That Syd guy he didn't seem to want to harm Alua or her but something was just wrong about him.

So i lost this chapter, had a very difficult exam and then i got sick, this has been a Terrible week.

Anyway i hope you liked this chapter, Kat's finally gotten her name, although It is only a nickname now, "Alua" Is still her "legal" name.
