Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 9 of All For One and One For All. Thank you to those who have left reviews. It does mean a lot to me. I know that it is taking me a bit of time to update all of these stories, which I do apologize for. I'm trying the best that I can to get each story out as quickly as I can. Perhaps some of them I should've waited on posting, but I'm trying my best with everything. Enough of my ramblings. Without further ado Chapter 9. ENJOY!
Chapter 9
The company stopped for one night after days of traveling at the edge of a cliff.
Rin took a soft breath as she leaned back against one of the rocks checking her weapons over with a crucial eye.
Gloin was sound asleep, tiny flying insects were sucked into his mouth every time he inhaled and were expelled when he exhaled.
Bilbo watched on in disgust before finally getting up and walking around. He saw most of the dwarves were asleep. Gandalf, Fili, and Kili were awake along with Rin. He walked over to his pony and gave her an apple, after looking around to make sure that no one was watching.
Rin looked up seeing Bilbo feeding his pony. Rin bit her lip softly knowing that Bilbo didn't want anyone to know that his pony was being fed.
"Hello, girl. That's a good girl. It's our little secret, Myrtle; you must tell no one. sh, sh" Bilbo's head shot up when he heard a scream in the night air and became rather worried, running over to Fili and Kili. "What was that?"
"Orcs," Kili said as he looked up.
Rin let out a breath rolling her eyes knowing that they were trying to scare Bilbo.
Another scream was heard causing Throin to jerk awake.
"Orcs?"
"Throat-cutters. There'll be dozens of them out there. The lowlands are crawling with them." Fili said, taking a drag off of his pipe.
"They strike in the wee small hours when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet; no screams, just lots of blood."
Bilbo looked away in fright.
Fili and Kili looked at one another and began to laugh lightly.
"You think that's funny? You think a night raid by orcs is a joke?" Thorin questioned getting to his feet. His voice was deep in anger at how his nephews were acting.
"We didn't mean anything by it," Kili said softly.
"No, you didn't. You know nothing of the world." Thorin said before walking off to the edge of the cliff looking out over the valley.
Balin walked up to Fili and Kili. "Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate orcs. After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria. But our enemy had got there first. Moria had been taken by legions of Orcs led by the most vile of all their race: Azog, the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Orc had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin. He began by beheading the King. Thrain, Thorin's father, was driven mad by grief. He went missing, taken prisoner, or killed, we did not know. We were leaderless. Defeat and death were upon us. That is when I saw him: a young dwarf prince facing down the Pale Orc. He stood alone against this terrible foe, his armor rent…wielding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield. Azog, the Defiler, learned that day that the line of Durin would not be so easily broken. Our forces rallied and drove the orcs back. Our enemy had been defeated. But there was no feast, no song, that night, for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived. And I thought to myself then, there is one who I could follow. There is one I could call King."
Thorin turned away from the view beyond the cliff.
The entire company was awake and standing in awe, staring at Thorin.
Thorin walked between them and towards the fire.
Rin swallowed the lump in her throat, a little concerned about the whole thing.
"But the pale orc? What happened to him?" Bilbo asked softly, stuttering a little bit.
"He slunk back into the hole whence he came. That filth died of his wounds long ago." Thorin said, looking over at Bilbo who was sitting rather nervously.
Rin pursed her lips together in rather concern. She slowly got up to her feet and put her sword down carefully on her sack. She went to the edge of the cliff looking out rather concerned. She wasn't fully sure if she knew if someone was out there watching them. Her heart pounded lightly in her chest as she stood there.
Thorin looked over seeing the young woman grasping her black-clad hands tightly at her sides. He had to admit that it was still rather strange having a woman on the team. But so far she has proven herself fairly well with the rest of the company. She pulled her weight and kept up with his group of dwarves. He let out a soft breath beginning to figure out that she wasn't all that bad to have around.
