For aught that I could ever read, could ever hear by tale or history, the course of true love never did run smooth. —Spoken by Lysander in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream
Warrior's Heart
Chapter 1: A Prince's Betrothed
965 A.D.
Royal Palace of Valaskjalf, Asgard
Frigga, Queen of Asgard, sat down in the library, listening to her adopted daughter, Brielle read another book to her.
Brielle was a little girl with a delicate figure, fair skin, magneta pink eyes and long flowing dark golden-yellow hair that goes past her hips. She wore a bright pink skirt with a light pink underskirt, a white petticoat, a dark violet bodice, long off-white pink puffy sleeves and black flats.
The adopted Princess of Asgard was reading a book about Alfheim; the Kingdom of the Light Elves and one of the Nine Realms.
"Alfheim is a kingdom of enchanted forests, candy vegetation, rivers and springs of wine, and beautiful gardens. The capital city of the realm is the castle stronghold of Ljosalfgard."Brielle read."Several tribes of Light Elves, Faeries, Pixies, and Mermaids inhabit various regions and climates of Alfheim along with magical fauna such as Unicorns and winged cat steeds."
"And what kind of Elves would you see in Aifheim, dear?"Frigga asked.
"Though Alfheim is the Realm of the Elves, there are actually many kinds of Elves."Brielle remarked happily."Ice Elves and Spice Elves. Air Elves in their wondrous flying machines. Sea Elves in their coral castles along the Hummingbird Bay. Triple-jointed Pleasure Elves. Elves of the Vale with their herds of wild 'corns. Moon Elves all aglow with Firefly Wine. Together they all form the Light Elves. A Kingdom of enchanted forests and natural champagne springs and more gardens than there are stars. A kingdom of Faeries and candy farmers, of Mermaids lagoons and orchards the size of oceans. A place of peace otherworldly wonder. An Elvish Paradise!"
Frigga gives Brielle a warm smile.
"That's correct, Brielle."Frigga praised."Beside being one of the Nine Realms of the World Tree, Alfheim is indeed an Elvish Paradise."
A bright smile grew on Brielle's face at her adopted mother's words.
"Are you going to test me even more, Your Highness?"Brielle assumed.
Frigga shook her head.
"We're done for today, sweetheart."Frigga responded."You can go and play now."
"Yipee!"Brielle cheered in delight.
Brielle held hands with Frigga as the two of them made their way out of the library within the palace.
"Queen Frigga?"Brielle spoke up as she glanced at Frigga with a curious look."I have another question. What are the Valkyrie?"
A slight grim look appeared on Frigga's face at her adopted daughter's question.
"The Valkyrie are legend, Brielle."Frigga explained."Elite warriors of Asgard, sworn to defend the throne. Odin sent the Valkyrie to Hel in order to prevent Hela from escaping. The attack turned into a massacre…as Hela killed every Valkyrie."
Brielle gasped in shock.
"Oh no."Brielle replied and became sad."So all the Valkyrie are gone now?"
"Unfortunately, yes."Frigga replied.
Then an idea appeared on Brielle's head.
"Say Queen Frigga, can I be a Valkyrie?"Brielle asked with a hopeful look.
Frigga chuckled at Brielle's question.
"Well, you're going to have to ask the All Father for that."Frigga declared.
"Okay, Your Highness."Brielle giggled.
"You don't need to be so formal with me, dear."Frigga suggested."You know you can call me 'Mother', dear."
Brielle's smile shrunk a bit.
"I know…but I'm not really part of the Royal Family."Brielle replied."You and King Odin took me in after my parents…"
Tears begun to appear Brielle's face as she looked down, only for Frigga to hug her.
"I understand, Brielle."Frigga said kindly."It's not going to be easy. You have to take it a day at a time. But for however long it takes, you have a home with us."
A small appeared on Brielle at the warm words from the Queen of Asgard.
"Thank you, Queen Frigga."Brielle answered with a grateful smile.
After finishing her studies with Queen Frigga, Brielle secretly made her way to the weapon's vault within the palace to check on King Odin and his two sons that were around her age; Thor and Loki.
Though they were brothers, Thor was more of the energetic type and Loki was a more thoughtful type.
Brielle quietly hid behind one of the treasures in the weapon's vault known as the Mjølnir to watch the King of Asgard and his two sons, who were standing near the Casket of Ancient Winters.
"Once, mankind accepted a simple truth, that they were not alone in this universe. Some worlds man believed to be home to their gods. Others, they knew to fear. From a realm of cold and darkness came the Frost Giants, threatening to plunge the mortal world into a new ice age. But humanity would not face this threat alone. Our armies drove the Frost Giants back into the heart of their own world. The cost was great. In the end, their king fell."Odin explained."And the source of their power was taken from them. With the last great war ended, we withdrew from the other worlds and returned home to the Realm Eternal, Asgard. Here we remain as a beacon of hope, shining out across the though we have fallen into man's myths and legends, it was Asgard and its warriors that brought peace to the universe."
Odin turned to look at Thor and Loki, who stood between him.
"But the day will come when one of you will have to defend that peace."Odin admitted.
"Do the Frost Giants still live?"Loki asked.
"When I'm king, I'll hunt the monsters down and slay them all!"Thor remarked excitedly while waving his fists pretending to hold a weapon and looked at his father."Just as you did, Father."
Odin simply smiled at his two sons.
"A wise king never seeks out war."Odin declared."But he must always be ready for it."
Odin began to head out of the vault as Thor and Loki share a smile with one another before following after their father and held hands with him.
"I'm ready, Father."Thor assured.
"So am I."Loki added.
"Only one of you can ascend to the throne."Odin admitted."But both of you were born to be kings."
Brielle watched the trio as she still stood hiding behind the display where the Mjølnir was held.
"Brielle, it's unwise to be spying."Odin declared.
A sheepish smile appeared on Brielle's face as she joined the King of Asgard and the two princes out of the vault.
"Sorry, Your Majesty. But is it true then?"Brielle asked."Either Thor or Loki shall be the King of Asgard after you?"
"That's right."Odin said with a nod."And one that time comes, Asgard will need a new queen as well."
This caused Thor, Loki and Brielle to become confused.
"A new queen, father?"Thor said.
"Like mother?"Loki asked.
"Who?"Brielle questioned.
Odin smiled at his two sons and their close friend.
"It's you, Brielle."Odin admitted.
A dumbstruck look appeared on Brielle's face.
"M-Me, Your Majesty?"Brielle said in disbelief.
"That's correct, my child."Odin declared."On the day you were born, your father and I agreed that you will one day be married to one of my sons, who will I name my heir to the throne after I step down. Asgard shall need a new queen to look up to and it will be one day your responsibility as well to defend our kingdom's peace."
There were various feelings growining within Brielle as she shared a glance with Thor and Loki, who both looked at her with equally surprised looks.
The young girl then brought her attention at the King of Asgard and smiled at him.
"I'm deeply honoured, Your Majesty."Brielle declared in a soft yet firm tone."And I promise to do well as the new Queen of Asgard like Queen Frigga."
Odin smiled in approval before heading off with Thor, Loki and Brielle to another side of the palace.
