Always Eventually Daybreak

"If only," Lin said aloud, breaking the silence.

She and Kya sat side by side on the shared couch, where everything, inside and out, was calm and peaceful, for once.

"If only, what?" Kya asked, looking up from her book, turning her head to face Lin.

"If only I met you first – then things wouldn't be so complicated." Lin replied, her voice firm and yet rueful, as if she could turn things around if she had the chance. "I could have, but I didn't."

Kya put her books down, and placed a hand on Lin's. "So you made mistakes in the past, I know I have, and more than I could count, but I've learned from them."

Lin turned her head to face Kya, and she nodded. "And so have I. I just can't help but think of how things would be different."

Kya looked down for a moment, and her eyes met with Lin's again. "Well, we're together now."

Lin pondered briefly, and she smiled. "You're right. We are now. I guess, that's what most important, right?"

Kya nodded. "Right."

"In that case," Lin began, leaning forward, even closer to Kya, "we'll have to make up for lost time, then?"

Kya blinked, and she smiled back, moving closer to press her lips onto Lin's, answering the question.
