CHAPTER 146
The atmosphere in the courtroom was dense, full of contained emotions and watchful eyes. Hargraves, the man who had caused so much suffering, was facing a trial that would determine the fate of his life. The charges were serious: murdering mounties, attempted rape, raping women, embezzling public money and accepting bribes. His lawyer, despite being aware of the mountain of evidence against his client, insisted on Hargraves' innocence and tried to incriminate Elizabeth Delayne, claiming that she had shot him.
- Your Honor, are you trying to convince us that Elizabeth Delayne, a retired teacher, respected and an exemplary citizen, suddenly decided to shoot her client for no apparent reason?
-Mr. Prosecutor, we know that appearances can be deceiving.
-Elizabeth Delayne was only defending herself against an attacker. But considering his history, can we really take Elizabeth Delayne at her word? There was a hush in the room.
- Doctor, the evidence is clear. Hargraves was a threat to the community. Your attempt to reverse the roles and blame the victim is unfounded. You are just trying to divert attention from the horrendous crimes committed by your client.
- Mr. Prosecutor, I ask the court to consider the possibility that the shot was fired by Elizabeth Delayne, who, in a moment of hatred, might have acted out of hatred, not out of a sense of justice.
- Doctor, we cannot allow a dangerous man like Hargraves to escape the consequences of his actions. The truth is before us, and justice must be done.
- But what about the presumption of innocence? Do you want to condemn my client without even considering other possibilities? Hargraves' defense lawyer said...
-Doctor, the presumption of innocence cannot override the facts. The evidence speaks for itself. The truth will prevail, regardless of attempts to distort it.
The tension between the prosecutor and the defense lawyer, each defending their version of events during the trial. The prosecutor emphasizes the clarity of the evidence, while Hargraves' defense lawyer seeks to question the victim's credibility.
The prosecutor, a serious man dedicated to the search for the truth, would not allow justice to be distorted. He presented overwhelming evidence, photos and medical reports by Dr. Carson that proved the atrocities committed by Hargraves. The attempted rape of Charlote, the violence inflicted on other women and the embezzlement of money were laid out in detail.
During the trial, Hargraves' expression ranged from defiant to furious. He shouted, threatened and ranted, especially when he spotted Charlote in the witness box. His promise to have her as his wife as soon as he set foot out of prison echoed off the walls of the courtroom. The judge, losing patience with such audacity, reprimanded Hargraves and warned his lawyer about the consequences of trying to distort the facts.
The emotion reached its peak when the prosecutor made his final statement, highlighting Elizabeth Delayne's courage in facing such a dangerous man in defense of Charlote's life and justice. Charlote, although visibly shaken, stood firm and corroborated the narrative of events, telling everyone everything that had happened, including how that man had assaulted her by touching her body. Bill stood next to her, holding her hands, his face without any reaction, but his eyes seemed to want to pop out of their sockets with so much hatred. Jack, on the other side, holding his mother's hand too, was holding Tom by the shoulders so that he wouldn't get out of his seat and fly into the Hargraves, because they all wanted to kill that man, but they had to believe in justice.
The court was on the verge of a verdict, and the audience remained silent, awaiting the outcome of that dark chapter.
The judge, after careful consideration of all the evidence and testimony, banged his gavel, decreeing life imprisonment for Hargraves. He would be removed from society, prevented from causing any more harm. The court finally breathed a collective sigh of relief at the justice that had prevailed. Hargraves was led away in handcuffs to serve his sentence, closing a chapter of terror in Hope Vale's life.
