When the group of three finally arrived at their apartment and opened the door, they were surprised at how nice it was. Everything was clean and well set and there were two bedrooms specifically for them. The kitchen had all the necessities in it, the fridge, microwave, oven, toaster, coffee maker, and even an air fryer. There was plenty of cabinet space and a giant pantry as well. The two adults already knew they were going to enjoy life here.
The living room wasn't all that bad either. It had a wide screen tv and a nice couch to sit in, in front of it, hell there was even a recliner there.
The bathroom had also been thoroughly cleaned and everything was aesthetically well done.
This would probably be better than any other apartment out there and the kobayashi's were surprised the government would be this generous. They got themselves into a once in a life-time deal and neither of them wanted to leave it.
Aki, for his part, was as amazed as they were but was always that way around everything so the couple paid him no mind.
As he explored the room which would soon be known as his he felt the amazingly soft bed and had the need to jump into it. So he did and felt heavenly as he lay there.
He passed out soon after.
He awoke to the sound of a pot boiling. He wasted no time getting up and sat up. He noticed a bag sitting on the floor. It was full of clothes that seemed more his size than the oversized hand-me-downs so he decided to put them on.
The shirt he chose was pretty basic, only a white tee, and the same went for his choice in pants. He went for a pair of shorts that reached his knee. Just like…
As he walked out of his room he noticed Hazuki standing over the pot he could hear earlier, intently stirring whatever was inside "Good Morning, Mr. Kobayashi!" He glanced up from his pot and took notice of Aki's new attire "Good morning, Aki. I see you found the clothes we left for you. Do you like them?" Aki stared down at his clothing "oh yeah they're good. It's just that they remind me of someone." Hazuki flinched from his current position "and you don't remember who?" Aki nodded "yeah and it's really bothering me."
his mind shifted and now placed itself upon the reason he came here in the first place. "Are you making something?" Hazuki nodded "yep. Me and Reina went to the grocery store after you slept. We stocked up on some foods but it seems like we both forgot to buy breakfast foods." he chuckled. "So what are you making?" "It's not a breakfast food but I decided some light pasta wouldn't be too bad. Reina should be waking up soon and I figured you would wake up soon as well so I decided to make some."
Aki accepted his answer and sat down at the dining table noting the new stuff littered around. There were two shoes and 2 pairs of socks lying on the floor and several now empty grocery bags sitting there too. There seemed to be a grocery bag still full of clothes for somebody sitting on the floor as well. "Aki, can you wake Reina? She's in the room to the right of yours." he got up from his chair, smiling towards his adoptive father.
Reina was sprawled out over her bed, her mouth drooling and taking up the whole bed. The blanket, previously on the bed, had been tossed onto the floor beside her, and Aki couldn't decide if it had been tossed off before or after Hazuki had got up to make breakfast for them. He started small with her, a mere tap on her shoulders and a small ask to wake up, hoping she was a light sleeper but it quickly evolved into rapid shaking and Aki scream shouting at her. She eventually stirred from her sleep but not until her husband had started to get a little nervous hearing the rustling coming from the room.
"Huh…" Aki had actually gotten a little frustrated with her and said in an annoyed tone that "it's time to get. Mr. Hazuki is making breakfast for you." she muffled out another 'huh' before Aki insisted that she get her ass down there. He didn't actually say that of course.
He walked back and practically stomped towards the dining room not noticing the weird looks the cook was giving him. Reina walked in as well, clearly dazed and completely out of it but sat down towards the table as well. As Hazuki finished dishing out their food he worriedly glanced towards the two but said nothing. He walked with both of their bowls in hand and placed it in front of them. Reina was slow to notice there was even food there but Aki got started immediately and commented on how good it was. He walked back with his bowl and noticed his wife still hadn't started so he decided to give her a little push. "Honey, your food is ready." she sat silent for a moment before saying a silent oh and began to slowly eat.
He decided he shouldn't really bother her further so he decided to alert Aki to what they had been doing in the meantime."We went out and bought most of the necessities so I was wondering if you wanted to go out and do some research on schools. We used most of our money already so we can't really buy a computer yet but I figured we could go to a library and I can show you some options." Aki beamed and said all he needed to through it but decided to voice his answer anyway "yes! Let's go after we finish eating!" he began to devour his food faster in anticipation and Hazuki gave a small smile at his childish excitement.
After they both finished eating, Hazuki fished a pair of shoes out of one of the still full grocery bags and tossed it over. He also tossed a bag of socks towards him. "Put those on and we can go." as he heard the boy rush to put them on, he grabbed his boots and a fresh new pair of socks and pulled them on as well. As they both approached the door to leave, Hazuki said one last thing to his wife "don't forget there's some coffee beans in the pantry somewhere."
As they walked through the city and stood in awe of what was now Hosu city, Hazuki was staring at his phone and looking through the map that came with it. He was trying to find where the new library was as the one he once knew had been shut down and a new one built when he finally spotted it. He took Aki's hand and walked him through the streets. The spiky-haired boy was still in awe of everything he was seeing so he didn't ponder too much on the older man dragging him around.
"Here we are. The new local library." Aki looked up at him in confusion "new? It looks pretty old to me." Aki was right about it looking old. The bricks decorating it had lost their color and the cracks in between were full of dirt. The sign was dirty and the text in it was barely visible. The glass can't be seen through at all. "It wasn't here back when I was in Hosu." Aki muttered a small 'huh' but the adult grabbed his arm and went into the building, ignoring his confusion.
They walked through and noticed a woman, probably in her 80s, sitting at the reception reading a book. She said a barely audible 'welcome' and the two proceeded onwards. Hazuki wandered around for a bit before finally finding where the computers were located. It was an older model, definitely not up to date, but it was a computer so they had something to work with. It took a while to boot up but when it did, it opened to an older browser that was slow to load anything. When it finally did, he started looking up various schools to introduce to the boy, however, he noticed something wrong with him. He looked strangely confused at what he was doing. "What's wrong Aki?" he thought for a second before answering the adult's question "I… can't read that."
"Huh what are you talking about ?" he took another look at the boy and realized he wasn't joking "are you serious?" Aki nodded in response. "Well that's an issue. I'll see if we can get Japanese books from the government to give you." Still, that's weird. He doesn't know written japanese but he can speak it? "Thank you so much Mr. Kobayashi!" He gave him a sweet smile and continued, "Since you can't read it, I'll read it out to you." the boy nodded.
He went over various schools with him, going over what each specifically wants and what they offer. As they went through them a couple of them caught his eye: specifically the ones titled hero schools. He wasn't sure what that meant so he decided to ask his adoptive father. "What are hero schools?" Hazuki wasn't fazed by Aki's lack of knowledge on anything anymore so he answered without judgment "I suppose we never explained this to you did we? Hero schools are pretty self-explanatory but you don't know what heroes do so I guess I should explain that." Aki was paying attention now "people can sometimes use their quirk in bad ways to harm other people. Often, cops aren't enough to handle these people so some choose to specialize in dealing with them. Those who specialize in this are called heroes and they have to go to hero school to train to defeat these people." his mouth formed an 'oh' shape "this was actually what me and Reina did before we went up to the mountain." He got up close and personal when he said that and started asking loads of questions.
He didn't answer any of Aki's questions until he heard one that actually seemed relevant to what they were doing. "So, if heroes have to go to hero school for this job, which one did you go to?" he brought a finger to the boy's lips "i'll tell you just calm down a little." Aki backed up a bit and sat waiting for him to tell him. "We both went to a school called U. A. I actually think it's on this list somewhere." he went to the site and was about to tell him about it when he noticed the boy's expression. He was determined and Hazuki could already tell he made his decision but he decided to tell him about it anyway "U. A. is the toughest hero school to get into but it's also the best one in japan. Are you sure about it?" he didn't nod anything in response or even change his face so the older man already knew his answer. "Alright but to even get in will be difficult. I can guarantee you a chance to get in but I don't know if you will. And you will need a lot of help training and understanding whatever your quirk is. Do you think you can do that?" "yeah!"
They were walking back to their apartment and opening the door to their apartment when they noticed the apartment was free of any trash in it and was spotless."There you too are. I've been waiting." Hazuki was slightly concerned about his wife's tone so he didn't interact but Aki did "sorry sorry. We found the school I'm going to now!" she didn't look as angry "really? Which one?" Hazuki, now out of danger's reach, responded "I told him about where we went and he knew he wanted to go there so…" she looked down at the boy and back up at her husband "he doesn't even know his quirk yet, are you sure we can prepare him enough for that exam?"
"I would have said no, had his expression been any less determined but… he's really set on this." the boy grinned at him "yeah, I have to get in!" the lady returned a sweet smile, reminiscing about the exact same determination she held to get into it and made her decision to help. "Alright, we'll help you as much as we can and as long as you try your best, I can guarantee you'll get in." "really!" "yes. My quirk used to be awful but I trained hard and got in. Even if your quirk isn't anything special, if you train hard enough you can definitely do it." he started psyching himself up for it, when she said "in order for you to actually get in though, we need to figure out what your quirk is." he felt like a rock hit his head "oh… right." she laughed at his simple nature.
"Alright honey, you got this. I don't know anything about how to figure out your quirk so it's up to you." "right" she said and took aki's hand "this could take a while so I don't know when i'll be back. So don't worry about us if we're not back before it's dark." he waved goodbye at them and she closed the door behind her.
They had been walking quite a while when they arrived at their location. It was a forested park with trees surrounding them. "It'll be easier to do it here." he glanced up at her "how so?"
"For one type in particular, it's easier when you are next to nature to awaken it. It's easier in general." though, this method tests everything at once so it doesn't matter too much. "I see."
Once they found a suitable spot, she asked him to sit down. He did as instructed and she told him something else "close your eyes and focus on everything. On your own body, your muscles, your heartbeat and everything you can." he began feeling nature and then focused on his own body's strength, noticing a particular strength in his fist. He honed in on that oddity and Reina began to notice something building within the boy. Light began to radiate from it and she noticed the wind blowing around them. Unconsciously he moved his fist towards the ground and punched, making a giant dent in it.
She was stunned. This was a great quirk and would definitely get him into the school. Aki was in the zone and didn't realize until she got him out of it. "Huh.." and then he noticed the hole in front of himself. "Woah, what happened?!" she burst into laughter "your quirk happened." he was genuinely surprised "my quirk did that?" her laughter was still going but she tried to talk through it "yeah." he clenched his fist, I can do it! He was confused about something though. Why were those words appearing in my head though?
"Guess we have good news to tell to Hazuki." He agreed with her and let that show on the outside even if he was confused internally.
As they came back and arrived at their home, Hazuki awaited the news of what his quirk was. He was reading a book but glanced up when he heard the knob turn and the entering of his 1, no, now 2, returning family members."So, what is he?" she looked angrily at him, "at least let me get settled first. Geez." Aki stifled a laugh and moved to get settled down as well. She finished getting her shoes off first so she grabbed a water bottle from the fridge "he's got an emitter quirk. It allows him to build up energy in his fist and make a big impact."
"That seems useful. It will probably be easy to train as well." she down her bottle before responding "yeah. It probably will. It might be a bit of a challenge for us though. Because neither of us have quirks that are similar enough to that." Aki finished with his shoes and got up "I'm sure you guys will be great at it! You guys went to that school so you'll definitely know how to best train me!" They both appreciated his enthusiasm but neither were sure yet. So they quietly nodded and gave small smiles.
Afterwards the day flew by and Aki went off to sleep. Giving them both a 'good night' and he wondered what tomorrow would bring. The two adults settled into watching tv for the night and got through a couple movies before one of them realized they still had something to do. Hazuki got off the couch and made his way over to the phone the detective had given him and he made a call.
"Hey, Tsukauchi, I need to ask you a favor." Tsukauchi grubbily answered "what are you doing making calls so late?"
"Sorry. It's just about Aki." the detective perked his ears up though that wasn't visible to Hazuki. "What's the issue?"
"Aki… wants to go to U. A. Can you arrange for him to get into the exams? I won't ask for automatic admission but…"
"Yeah, that can be arranged. How did U. A. come up anyway?" Hazuki breathed a sigh into the phone "when I was showing Aki all the possible schools that he could go to, the school that I went to got brought up and… "
"I see. Well it's no concern. They can't reject an application from the government so we can do it. Is that all?"
"Actually, there's one more thing I need to tell you…"
Author's notes:
Gon does have his nen in this btw. I thought it would be more interesting if he did. It would play more into the themes of mha if he didn't and would make more sense with hxh's plot but I think it's easier to write this way. So just pretend after gon and killua parted at the world tree that he got it back after ging taught him or something.
Sorry if this chapter seems rushed lol. I'm writing this the night before I'm supposed to post lmao.
