As the entrance exam date rapidly approached, Killua prepared more heavily for it. He more thoroughly read through all the books about quirks and learned about the biology of it all. People with two joints in their pinky toes are always quirkless which could prove troublesome if he ever breaks his foot. He knew he wouldn't but now that's one extra thing to worry about. Another thing that he learned through this is that people with mutation quirks often have extra bones inside what it is that their mutation is. And that their entire biology is different to accommodate for extra appendages.
In the previous months, he did his best to fake his expression in front of Shigeru to convince him that he was training hard and occasionally showed him his studious side
He grew more certain about his information about this world and that Shigeru had bought his act and soon the day he had been waiting for arrived.
That morning, Shigeru had gotten up early to prepare food for Shiro. Over the last few months, he had gotten to know his new 'brother's' tastes pretty well. He loved chocolate and everything sweet. One particular incident he remembered was when he made chocolate pancakes for the silver-haired boy, he had completely devoured them and left no trace of them ever being there. He immediately asked for more and Shigeru complied, never before seeing the boy so excited about something. He grew to care for the kid and now almost considered him family.
As Killua ran downstairs he could smell the chocolate in the air, and he sped over to where Shigeru stood, flipping some pancakes meant for him. "Oh, you're awake?" Killua's mouth watered at the sight but realized he had to maintain his composure "I smelt it." Shigeru gave him a wide smile "They're almost ready so sit down." he complied and as Shigeru finished the meal he decided to speak to Killua "Today's a big day, so I decided to make your favorite. It'll make you as prepared as possible as you can be." he began to dish it out and Killua was genuinely grateful for his food. "Thank you!"
He brought the dish over and Killua crammed it all into his mouth. As he finished up and got ready to go Shigeru had one last thing to say to him "One last thing. Be careful… and good luck Shiro." Killua put his head down and gave his best smile "Thanks.."
He finally got to the building he had been studying to get into for months. It was a challenge but he couldn't let himself be distracted from his goal. The entire reason he had come here was so that he could figure out how to get back home, not to play 'hero'. Still, he had to fake his enthusiasm for it, if someone figured out what he was truly here for, he would get threatened to high hell and he couldn't have that. He looked around and noticed all the applicants heading towards one entrance to the side so he followed. He noticed there was a big line there. Probably checking them to make sure they actually signed up for the exam. He waited for 5 minutes but he realized this was probably going to take a while, so he decided to scout the competition.
Several people in the line-up stood out to him when he used Gyo in comparison to the others. One was a blond dude who seemed to have a lot of energy in his fists. Another he could tell immediately was an electricity user. His aura radiated what Killua's looked like when in godspeed mode. He's probably gonna pass. Other's auras just seemed stronger to him in general and he could tell based on general aura which ones seemed confident they were going to get in.
He went through several others noting their overall strength before there was only one person in front of him left. He readied himself and after he heard the 'come' he had been waiting for, he came in. A man with white hair greeted him. He was very big and Killua guessed he had to be some kind of hero. Killua said a small 'yo' before they got to the meat of the conversation. "What's your name, quirk, and age?"
He knew this information was easy so he didn't stutter through it and spoke confidently "Shiro Nakamura. My quirk is sharpening. I'm 14." the man seemed to note something on his clipboard and asked a more personal question this time "I understand you've been adopted by the Nakamura's. Did your brother prepare you for the exam?" using the word 'brother' for Shigeru didn't seem right just yet but he tried to not let it bother him "he did." the older man relaxed his shoulders "I see. He's told me a little bit about you. Good luck out there." Shiro's eyes widened before he gave a small smile "Thanks…" The man opened the door for him and let him inside and he gave a glance over to the room in front of him. It appeared to be a giant lecture room with hundreds of seats in it. It was already halfway filled and he decided to sit in one of the seats in the middle of it. Now he just had to wait.
Line break!
The final spots had been filled and someone walked onto the stage. He recognized it as the man he saw checking him earlier. He grabbed the microphone and stood at the podium. "Welcome, all of you, to the U. A. entrance exam. I'll be briefing you on the exam portion of this stage. Afterward, you will report back here for Present Mic's information regarding the physical portion of the exam. Any questions?" most were kind of stunned by the seriousness of the man talking so they didn't speak up. A few moments passed and the man spoke once again "alright. I'll be telling you what to do for the exam portion then."
"You will all be split into separate sectors for this page of the exam. In front of you, there should be a button. Press it and say your name. It should tell you what sector you're in." As Killua pressed the button, a hologram appeared. He quietly said 'Shiro Nakamura' as the other students yelled a little bit too loud for his liking. 'Sector C' was projected as his sector. "If you are all done figuring out what your sector is, from the bottom up, make your way to the door to the right of me." teenagers paraded through the hall and they didn't seem to heed his words at all. Guess they're excited. Probably won't make a difference how fast I move so I'll just wait.
Soon almost everybody, except for the people who followed his instructions and killua, had completely left. "Thank you all for at least trying. The room you're looking for will be in alphabetical order going farther north. You're dismissed." killua got up from his position and moved towards the door. In the hallway leading to it, he saw several people crowding around the rooms, struggling to get into it, and then found his room. Only a few people were struggling to get into his room and after waiting, he got in pretty easily. He sat down at the last empty chair and they began the exam.
From all the knowledge he crammed in in the last few months, he was sure he aced it. He couldn't say that about the rest of the people in his room though. They were all aggressively tapping their pencils and making general sounds of frustration at almost every question. The exam turned out to be more difficult than they imagined.
When the proctor permitted the students to leave, he left immediately, hands in his pockets uncaring. The other students were all chatting with each other, mostly about the difficulty of the exam. He sat down and noticed another man standing there. He presumed the man to be present mic. He's lanky and his blonde hair is slicked back into a semi-mohawk. Killua can't figure out how it's still upright. He also had orange shades on and a leather jacket. He's going for that punk rock look and killua wasn't a big fan. When the rest of the teens sat down, the man got started.
"For all you examinee listeners tuning in, welcome to my show today!" he's a loud one. I think I liked the other guy better. "Everybody say 'hey'!" the room was silent. They're sharing my enthusiasm at least. Except for… he was in one of the middle rows and just above him he heard someone muttering about him. He glanced up and noticed the kid fangirling about it. At least someone likes your show. He also noticed someone else standing and cheering to the left of him on another bench but couldn't get a good look at him. The kid sat down before Killua could speculate further. The man moved on from the ridiculous little show he put on and started describing the rules for the practical exam.
He had been given a sheet of paper with the basic rules on it and a card with 'location C' on it. He imagined it was another exam site. Present mic's presentation of it could be summed up pretty easily. There were 3 different types of robots, and as they increasingly get harder the amount of points they give goes up. There was one weird thing about it though. There was a 4th robot. Another teen got up to ask and as present mic most eloquently put it, the thing was worth zero points. It isn't impossible to beat but it also isn't worth anything so it's better to dodge it altogether. He gathered that there must be some deeper meaning behind it other than to scare the students but he didn't question it. Present mic hadn't mentioned it but killua inferred it must be a scramble for points and that's where the competition came in. The teens had to use their quirks to their advantage to pass. This exam isn't that bad. Present mic motioned for them to take the door on their right
He was taken to Center C by another pro hero who looked a little bit wrong to him. He was far too blocky and killua guessed he had a mutation quirk. Soon they arrived at a giant gate. It was about the same size as the gate to Hades back home. The hero leading them had to wait for the other proctors to finish arriving at their locations so killua took the opportunity to look at his fellow applicants more thoroughly.
There was a girl with really long ear lobes that seemed to have a strong presence and he also noticed the boy with an electric aura from earlier. There was another muscular kid who looked just plain weird but had a decent aura so he expected him to pass as well. There were some other ones with okay aura but otherwise, he expected it to be those three. The blocky man finally got the ok to let the students go so he gave the and a 'go'.
Killua stayed behind and let the group run ahead so he wouldn't have to push and pull through the massive group of students and he walked in. he knew most would probably go around so he decided to go to the side. He waited a bit before he fought though focusing on what his fellow applicants were doing and paying specific attention to the ones whose auras he mentioned earlier. He memorized how much force they were using, how they utilized their quirks, and how smart they were with it in general before going at a speed that would keep him in line with the others.
He located one of the robots and went towards it noting that it was the two-pointer from earlier. He took out his claws in anticipation and analyzed what it was doing. It seemed the be guarding something behind its head so he created an opening for it and suddenly went behind it. Severing what appeared to be a switch.
He did this with several more of them, keeping a steady pace until he heard the announcer say "1 more minute!" he figured he had enough points by then so he went back to where he felt the most aura and noted that something seemed off with the contestants. He was about to ask what was wrong when another applicant pointed behind him and he immediately dodged backwards. The thing had put a hole into the floor and he could immediately tell why they appeared so worried. He had conditioned himself to never run away after he had pulled Illumi's needle out and that hadn't changed but in this particular case, it wasn't a life or death situation, and there was no Gon. he decided to make the rational decision and run away when he heard somebody screaming. He hadn't conditioned himself to care either but he didn't want any more points so he elected to save the person from further injury. He ran faster, than what he was running before at least, and swiped at the creature with his claws before picking up whoever he was carrying and ran.
The creature ran after them, however, and drew closer before a countdown was issued "7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Stop!" the zero-pointer ceased to move and killua sighed. It was difficult to hold back. Could have gotten in trouble. He looked down at the person he was holding and realized it was the earlobe girl from earlier "Thank you.. Uh?"
"Nakamura, Nakamura Shiro."
"Can you put me down now Nakamura?" he hadn't even noticed he was still holding her. He angled her sideways and let her get down on her own.
He looked over everybody he'd seen when he'd been gone and realized most only had small injuries. They were all okay. They had been whispering things about him now though. Mostly about his height and quirk. He's kinda looked 12 for a while now though so there wasn't really any changing it.
The person who led them there introduced himself as Cementoss before escorting them out of the testing location and telling them that their results would arrive in the mail in about a week. He gave them a 'good luck' and 'goodbye' and left. Shigeru knew what the exam entailed and since he had taken the same exam last year, he knew around what time they came in and told his mom around the time they'd be done.
They'd been outside waiting in their car for 5 mins waiting for him when they saw his silvery hair approach. Haruka waved at him from the inside of the car and ushered him in. he got in and said "We should probably get me a phone." the two in the car tilted their heads "Huh. I thought you would want to talk about the exam?" he shrugged off her second question and answered what his issue was "I would have gotten over here sooner but I couldn't figure out where you were. If you could text me directions or something it would be far easier." she stifled a laugh "for a little inconvenience like that? I'll try to put some money aside."
The brunette hadn't forgotten about his 'brother's' exams though so he popped the question about the exam "So how was it?" As Killua got in the car and buckled his seat, he responded, "It was fine, I passed."
"You're certain?" killua nodded "The studying I did for the exam was well served because I knew most of the answers and as for the practical…"
"I got enough points to constitute me getting in I think."
"Alright… if you say so."
A week came and went and soon the letter arrived. Haruka had woken up to the sound of the truck coming and she knew the letter would come in right about now so she had woken up to get the mail. As she ruffled through her mailbox, she saw it. The letter with U. A. stamped right on top of it and elected to put it to the side for when Killua would wake up.
The boy eventually got up and she greeted him with a normal 'good morning'. She prepared food for him and brought up the letter "U. A.'s letter came. Do you want to read it after we eat breakfast?" he glanced up at her warily "We should wait until Shigeru comes down. I wanna do it with both of you there." her mouth opened wide but nothing came out and she grabbed at her chest. She couldn't talk anymore and made it the best meal she could. She dished out plates for all of them and placed Shigeru's to the side.
The brunette boy arrived downstairs and immediately noticed the letter, staring directly at it "You haven't opened it yet?"
Killua's mouth was still full when he looked towards the staircase, noticing his 'brother's' great zeal towards it. "I wanted to wait for you to get up to open it together. After we all finish eating we can read it together." he gave Shigeru a wide grin.
They quickly ate through the rest of it and Shigeru almost scrambled to see it. "Why are you so concerned about it?" despite what he thought of Killua at first, he began to truly love his little 'brother'. He began to look forward to training him and showing him around U. A. He wanted to show him what U. A. was really about and teach him all about heroes and the world. He got a little too invested and that's why he cared so much. "Because if you get into the same school as me, I'll get to show you things about it you never knew were possible." killua looked genuinely shocked. He hadn't expected that someone would care so much but… "Let's open it now then shall we?"
The figure he recognized as being Allmight came on screen. All of his research into the heroes had come in handy. He was a new teacher this year. He said "Congratulations young Nakamura. You passed the U. A. Entrance exam with a total of 63 points!"
Shigeru was awestruck and while killua knew he passed, he put on a show of shock. "You did well Shiro. Most who get in only get 20 or 30 points. I got 41 so I wasn't awful but you did amazing! You must have been training hard!"
Now that Killua had spent enough time with him, Shigeru opened up and got a lot more friendly. He wished he had a supportive older with him back when he lived in that house but that wasn't gonna happen.
Something seemed off about that score though. I didn't beat that many did I? Allmight seemed to answer his query almost immediately with a "In this exam, you don't just get points from defeating the robots, you also get points from rescuing people. You earned 20 points when you rescued miss jiro from the zero-pointer and that placed you in the top ten! Good work, young Nakamura. I hereby invite you to your hero academia!"
Author's notes:
chapters will probably come out in 2-day intervals from now on lol. Before this, I could just google crap and go with it but I kinda have to rewatch some mha stuff to make sure I'm not getting anything critically wrong. Sorry lmao
Another thing. I may alter some arcs so it makes generally more sense cause in the anime they completely skipped over the written portion of the exam.
Also completely forgot about the hero costumes lmao. Probably should have written out a chapter for that before this but oh well.
