Chapter 33 — Crazy

"So, this is fun," Zoey brightly says. She was sitting in the passenger seat of Lana's SUV. She shifts. "We haven't hung out in such a long time. This is fun. And it'll be even more fun in the fall when I start at Met U. We'll be able to hang out even more. You, me, and Chloe. When she's not swamped at the Daily Planet."

Lana laughs. "I've had fun hanging out with you too, Zoey. I hope you're okay with our girls' day being interrupted since I have to stop at the library."

"It's fine. In fact, I look forward to seeing the library. I get a feeling I'll end up spending—" Zoey's cut off when Lana hits a man who had suddenly run out into the road. The front end of the SUV is crumpled up. Zoey lets out a groan and sees the man standing in front of them. She touches her forehead and finds it bloodied. She looks over and finds Lana staring in disbelief. "Lana, you okay?"

Lana nods. "Yeah. Are you?"

"Yeah. Yeah. I'm fine."

Lana opens the door and climbs out. She stares at the man. "I hit you at thirty miles an hour," she says. "You should be dead."

"It won't be the first time."

"Who are you?"

"Nobody you want to know. Trust me."

"Wait. At least tell me how you—"

"I'm sorry about your car, but I don't have time for twenty questions right now. I'm out of here," the man says then takes off.

Zoey opens the passenger side door. She starts to climb out of the SUV but falls to the ground. Lana runs over and helps her up. "We need to get you to the hospital," Lana says.

"I hate hospitals," Zoey replies. She winces at the pain that shoots through her ankle. "But I am inclined to agree with you. I think I really need one." She looks in the direction that the man had ran He looked familiar to her somehow, but she couldn't place it.

"Lana, you okay," Clark asks, walking into the exam room of Metropolis General Hospital. Lana had a small cut on her forehead while Zoey had a twisted ankle, which she was currently waiting to be wrapped up by the nurses so she could leave.

"Yeah, it's just a cut," Lana answers. She frowns. "How'd you get here so fast?"

"I was at the Daily Planet with Chloe. What happened?"

"I was driving down the street, heading toward the library, when this guy ran out in front of my car. I didn't even have time to brake. Clark, I hit him full on."

"I'm sorry."

"No, you don't understand. He didn't have a scratch on him."

"Lana, who is this guy?"

"I don't know. He made sure we were okay, then left. He wouldn't tell me his name. He was acting all jumpy and tense like somebody was after him."

"What does he look like?"

"He looks exactly like Viktor Stone," Zoey answers, shifting on the bed. "And he was wearing all purple." Clark walks out of the hospital room and Zoey throws her arms up. "And I'm fine by the way, Clark, thanks for asking."

"So on a scale from one to Taye Diggs, where exactly are we," Chloe asks, walking through the Daily Planet bullpen with Lana and Zoey. Zoey had been given crutches due to her ankles. She grabs an empty chair by Chloe's desk and sits down.

"Um, he's definitely up there," Lana amusedly answers.

"Yeah? Tall, dark, and bionic. You think he likes blondes?"

"His girlfriend's a brunette." They turn to see Clark walking up to them. "Sorry."

"Oh."

"Does his girlfriend know what happened to him," Zoey questions.

"No. He doesn't want her to know. He's afraid of how she'll react."

"Well, what's he's gonna go? Just keep lying to her and hope that she doesn't notice how different he is," Lana asks.

"So, I did some digging in Cyntechnics' backyard," Chloe says, changing the subject. "And I came up with more flowers than dirt."

"There's got to be something," Clark presses.

"Well, uh, their main focus has become the Machina project. Cutting edge prosthetics designed to replace damaged or severed limbs."

"Well, what they did to Victor is much more extensive than a severed limb."

"Who owns Cyntechnics," Lana questions.

"Um, guess what. It is owned by LuthorCorp," Chloe answers. Clark runs out of the bullpen and Lana quickly goes after him.

"I feel like we're in the middle of two parents fighting," Zoey softly says. Chloe doesn't reply. She didn't need to since that's exactly what it felt like.

Zoey walks up the stairs of the barn. Clark was sitting alone. A month had passed since Lana and Zoey ran into Viktor Stone. Viktor had been reunited with his girlfriend before they had left Metropolis. Unfortunately, Clark and Lana had broken up after he had been hypnotized by a woman named Simone. Lana had been ready to forgive Clark for cheating on her until he had made their breakup permanent. Zoey sits down on the couch next to him. "Look, I know I haven't been a good friend—" she begins.

"Just because we're not related doesn't mean you're not my sister," Clark softly interrupts.

"Well, I know I haven't been the world's best sister this year," Zoey corrects, shooting him a soft smile. "But, uh, if you need anything, I'm here." He shoots a smile. "Um, can I…can I tell you something and you not tell anyone?"

Clark turns to her. "Zoey, is everything okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, everything's fine. I, uh, I, uh…" Zoey shakes her head. "You know what, it's not important. It's actually pretty stupid." She stands up.

"Zoey, are you sure?"

"Yeah. I was just going to ask if you could keep an eye on the barn cat and her kittens this summer. I've been taking care of them. I've been trying to talk Oliver into letting me keep them, but he keeps saying no."

Clark shoots her an amused. "I can keep an eye on them."

"Thank you."

Zoey laughs as she walks down the hallway with Chloe. They were heading to the dorm room she shared with Lana. "Okay, part of me is regretting the fact that I'll be married when I start in the fall because that frat guy was hot," she amusedly says. "And his friend was totally checking you out. You totally could've gotten some frat guy dick."

Chloe snorts. "Frat guy dick," she repeats. "How much did you have to drink?"

Zoey shrugs. "Like a beer and a few tequila shots. The hot guy kept bringing them to me. It would be rude to turn him down."

"Remind never to leave you alone when you're near fraternity row," Chloe says, opening the door to her room. She freezes in the doorway at seeing how close Lana was with Lex.

"Whoa," Zoey says, leaning against Chloe. She looks between Lex and Lana. "Are you two fucking now?"

"I'm going to take Zoey to get some coffee," Chloe quickly says, then shuts the door. She grabs Zoey's arm and drags her down the hallway. She shoots Zoey a disbelieving look. "'Are you two fucking now?'"

"I'm slightly drunk," Zoey defends. "What was I supposed to say? 'Lana, don't fuck Lex. He's not that good.'"

Chloe snorts. "When does Oliver pick up you?"

"Tomorrow. I miss him." Zoey loops her arm through Chloe's. She leans against her friend. "Now, he's good. Way better than anyone else."

Zoey lets out a groan as she walks out of the Talon with a latte in hand. She had a little bit of a headache. "Zoey." She stops and turns to see Lana walking towards her. Zoey winces. She remembered what she had said to Lana and Lex upon finding them in the dorm room. "Look I just want to clear the air," Lana says. "Lex and I are just friends."

Zoey shifts. "Lana, you're an adult who is free to do whatever or whoever you want. And I just don't want to be in the middle. You're my friend and Clark is basically my brother. If you ever need anything or just want to hang out, let me know. I have to go. I need to finish packing before Oliver arrives."

Zoey shoots her a smile and walks away, leaving Lana standing there. Once she's inside her SUV, Zoey shakes her head. "Lana is my friend," she tells herself. "And we're allowed to do stupid things."
