Hey, Isti here! Asked for a drabble prompt on the LU server earlier because I felt like writing but wasn't sure what to go for.
Prompt someone gave me was:
"one of the boys turns into an animal with twi's pendant (probably by accident or maybe even on purpose) and actually enjoys it
decides to have fun for a day while the chain tries to catch him and fails miserably
after the day is over he turns himself in like the good boy he is"
—
I didn't follow this exactly, of course, and it turned into a bit more than a drabble, but I love what I came up with! I hope you enjoy it too 3
Wind leaped at Twilight, trying to catch his arm and duck him under the water. Unfortunately, Twilight had a lot of experience at dodging children (and monsters, but mostly children), and was able to evade the boy with ease.
As he lunged forward for another pass, Wind felt something hard and smooth brush against his arm. He had just enough time to hear Twilight whisper, "Oh, sh-…" before the world spun around him and things suddenly got very strange.
When his head finally stopped spinning, Wind looked around to take stock of his situation.
Observation number one: he was currently underwater. Not too big of a surprise, considering he'd just been playing on the shore.
Observation number two: his perspectives were…off. He couldn't see very well. No, wait, that wasn't right…He could see too much? Yeah, that was…closer, anyway. Whatever the case, he couldn't really make sense of what he was seeing, which amounted to about the same thing.
Observation number three: he was breathing.
Wait a minute.
He was…breathing?!
Okay, Wind thought. I've obviously been…uh…changed, somehow. So. What do we do when we encounter strange situations where we don't know what to do?
…we figure it out.
He decided to start with trying to move. If nothing else, this would at least give him some measure of control over himself, and allow him to reach the others to get their help. He tried to close his eyes so he could focus better on his body.
It didn't work. His eyes stubbornly remained open. It was as if he didn't even have-
Oh. That was right. If he'd been turned into some kind of sea creature, he probably didn't need eyelids. There went that idea.
Giving up on closing his eyes (and if that wasn't bizarre, he didn't know what was), he focused on how his body felt, to see what he could and couldn't move.
Hmm…he was definitely more horizontally oriented than usual, and he felt several small parts trailing through the water, both above and below his…head? Body?
Anyway, he managed to figure out that his back end was the easiest to move for now, so he started experimenting. He wriggled slowly back and forth, and felt water sliding over his skin. He was moving! He was moving forward!
Oh crap, he was moving forward. He should probably stay close to the shore, rather than risk getting lost, but how did he-?
Oh. He had fins. Okay. So, based on the way you'd bank a boat in the wind…hmm…
It was a little clumsy, he would definitely need more practice, but he managed to turn himself all the way around and carefully swim towards the pale, sandy line of the bank.
Getting more comfortable with the feeling of this form of movement, Wind tried swimming a bit more forcefully, and found himself abruptly shooting forward a lot faster than he'd intended, just barely missing a pair of legs and running straight into the sand, bumping his nose on a rock.
Oof. That's gonna take some getting used to.
Then he tried to turn around.
It didn't work. He tried to move his head, to look around and see where he was. It didn't work. Some part of the front of his head was stuck in a crag in the bank. He seemed to have something long stuck to the end of his nose, sort of like a sword or something.
I don't think whatever I am normally comes so close to the shore, he thought. I'm probably supposed to live in deeper water. Well, nothing for it but to keep trying!
He kept trying, and failing, to get himself unstuck, but it was no use. He didn't have the proper knowledge of how to move himself to get himself free, if he was able to in the first place, and at this point all he was accomplishing was tiring himself out.
He couldn't even close his eyes in despair.
Moments before he was about ready to try and see if he could cry, he felt something shifting in the flow of the water around him. It seemed to be coming from behind. With renewed vigor, he resumed his struggles, but a voice behind him said, "Whoa there, hey! It's okay, it's just me."
Legend
Wind relaxed in relief. It's just Legend. Twilight must have gone to get him. That's good.
Wait. How is Legend talking underwater?
A pair of gentle hands brushed against his sides. Wind jerked, startled.
"Sorry! Sorry, it's okay. I'm just trying to get you out. Don't you worry, Sky's got the Master Sword at the other end of the beach, we just have to get you over there. We'll have you all fixed up in no time."
Oh, that made sense; Legend was grabbing him to help him get free—wait, Master Sword? What did they need the Master Sword for?
He allowed it this time when he felt Legend's hands wrap around him, and he held as still as possible as the vet began to gently pull. Water swirled around them from some powerful source at his back, and a moment later, Wind was free! He spun around to thank Legend (carefully, he didn't want a repeat)—and stopped in his tracks as he registered why Legend was apparently able to breathe (and speak!) underwater.
Unless Wind's new fish eyes were playing tricks on him, his friend was a mermaid.
Or a…merman. Merperson, whatever.
Point is, he had a tail. A fish tail. A pretty fish tail.
Wind rushed forward to get a closer look, but Legend dove out of the way. "Hey, watch it! You've got a sword on the front of your face, remember? I'd rather not be a Link-kabob!"
Oh, right…oops.
"Anyway, look, I know this isn't something you were expecting, and I can explain it later, but we need to get you to the Master Sword so we can change you back."
Change him back?
Well that probably would be a good idea, but he was just starting to get used to this whole being-a-fish thing!
Legend pinpointed him with a look, like he knew what he was thinking. "And you really should change back sooner rather than later. We don't want to have you getting lost in the middle of the ocean, especially after dark. C'mon. I'll let you ask whatever you want about this"—he gestured to himself—"once you're hylian again."
That settled it. He wouldn't be able to ask any questions if he remained a fish.
Still. He hoped he'd get to do this again sometime. Unexpectedness and close calls aside, this was actually a lot of fun!
If you guessed Wind was a swordfish, you were right!
If you had a different idea of what he could be, let me know in the comments! Swordfish Wind is just one way to go about it. :)
