As you may or may not know, Lydia, a girl with black hair, has a bad habit of changing her name, probably worse than Marcie's habit of calling Peppermint Patty "Sir", and claiming boys who are older than her are "Too old for her", as shown when Linus tried to compliment her, only for her to use rude remarks, some of which get him into trouble.
One Saturday, as there was no school, Lydia was sitting on the park bench, watching the world go by. One boy walked over to her. This boy was none other than 555.
"Oh. Hello." said 555. "You wouldn't mind me taking this seat, would you?"
"I don't know." quivered Lydia. "When were you born?"
"I was born in October." said 555.
"I was born in December." replied Lydia. "Say, aren't you kind of old for me?"
"I'm only 2 months older than you!" said 555 angrily. "And I'm not asking you to marry me!"
"We'll see about that." scoffed Lydia.
"It's true!" said 555. "Besides, I've already got a girl in Britney!"
"Anyway," said Lydia. "What is your name?"
"Because of the town I come from, they call me 555, but my real name is in fact Clive."
"Nice meeting you, Clive." said Lydia. "Today, my name is Lydia. Yesterday, I was Louise, but I also like Laura."
"Oh, good grief!" sighed 555. "It's the same girl who changes her name all the time!"
Lydia, upon hearing this, just got off the bench and walked off.
"What's up with that girl?" wondered 555.
Lydia made her way to the ice cream shop. She stood in line, waiting her turn to order herself ice cream. Right in front of her, there was Linus with Janice.
"There's the very man in front of me." Lydia thought.
After ordering her strawberry ice cream, she walked by Linus and Janice, the former of whom had ordered chocolate, and the latter who had ordered strawberry.
"Oh no!" Linus sighed.
"You wouldn't mind sharing our table, would you?" asked Janice.
"I don't know." said Lydia. "When were you born?"
"I was born in March." said Janice.
"I was born in December." said Lydia. "Say, since Mister was born in October, aren't you young for him?"
"He may be 5 months older than me," said Janice. "But I don't mind boys who are older than me."
Lydia simply walked out of the ice cream shop, leaving Linus and Janice to eat their ice cream.
"Good grief! What's eating her?" Linus grumbled.
"Beats me!" said Janice.
"No wonder she wasn't skipped any grades." Linus added.
Lydia returned to the bench at the park she was sitting at before 555 bothered her. But as she did, there sat a boy with brown hair. We know this boy to be Eugene, Emerald's little brother. Upon looking at Lydia, he showed some love in his eyes.
"Hello, Beautiful." said Eugene. "You got lovely hair."
Lydia looked toward Eugene with concern.
"Do I know you?" asked Lydia.
"Oh, how rude of me. I'm Eugene. Eugene Peter Green."
"Today, my name is Lydia. Yesterday, I was Louise, but I also like Laura."
"I don't care what your name is," said Eugene. "I was just introducing myself."
Lydia looked on at Eugene.
"How would you like to…. you know, spend some quality time with a good Aussie hunk like me?" asked Eugene.
"I don't know." Lydia said. "When were you born?"
"I," said Eugene. "was born in February."
"I was born in December." said Lydia. "Say, aren't you kind of old for me?"
"I am older than you," said Eugene. "but only by 10 months! And I'm not even asking you to marry me! Besides, we're still kids!"
"See you, Mister." said Lydia as she got off the bench.
Eugene watched Lydia walk off, and sighed dreamily.
That evening at dinner, Eugene sat with Emerald, Jasmine, and their parents. Eugene was given Bangers and Mash for dinner.
"Ah, there's a sensible dinner for me!" said Eugene.
Emerald was given three hot dogs.
"Oh yeah! Hot dogs!" smiled Emerald.
And Jasmine was given…..
"Oh no! Not Brussels sprouts again!" Jasmine groaned.
"They're good for you, Jas." said Riley.
"But they don't taste very good!" moaned Jasmine. "And how come you didn't give any to Emerald?"
"Because," said Emerald. "You're the youngest, and you need to eat healthy."
"Says the one who doesn't eat healthy herself!" Jasmine thought.
Eugene didn't respond to his sisters' argument. He just ate his sausages, mashed potato and peas aimlessly. He wasn't thinking about the taste of his food. He was thinking about Lydia.
"What are you up to, Gene?" asked Anya.
"I think….." said Eugene. "I think….. I might be in love."
That Monday, it was school as usual. Lydia solemnly took her seat, which was right behind Sally. Sally looked behind her.
"Oh, hello." Sally said coldly, knowing how much Lydia would annoy Linus.
Lydia looked at Sally.
"So," Sally said. "What is your name today?"
"Today, I'm Sally." Lydia answered.
Sally, upon hearing Lydia's answer, turned bright red with fury.
"Yesterday, I was Carly. But I also like Eliza."
"AAUGH!" was all Sally could scream.
"Sally!" shouted Miss Cooper.
"Sorry, Miss!" said Sally.
"Looks like we have the same name." said Lydia.
"Oh, good grief!" sighed Sally. "She's bound to be more trouble than she's worth."
Harold Angel came up to Sally's desk.
"Is someone giving you trouble, Sweet Butterfly?" asked Harold Angel.
"The girl behind me." said Sally. "She took my name!"
"Don't mind her." said Harold Angel. "Let's just focus on our work for today."
When it was lunch time, Lydia was sitting on her own at a bench, ready to eat her marmite sandwich when Eugene walked up to her.
"Hello, Beautiful." said Eugene. "You're looking wonderful today."
"Charmed, I guess." said Lydia.
"Mind if I….. share your seat with you?" asked
"Aren't you old for me?" asked Lydia.
"I'm only 10 months older than you, good grief!" cried Eugene. "It's not that big an age difference!"
Lydia acted like Eugene didn't say anything.
"Today, I'm Sally." Lydia said.
Sally overheard this, and was furious. She lashed out at Lydia, resulting in a brawl.
"I'm…. out of here." Eugene said.
When lunch break was over, Sally and Lydia were sent to the principal's office.
"A fine mess you got into, 'Sally'!" Sally huffed.
Later, Charlie Brown was sitting at home, preparing his homework for the week when Sally arrived home, fuming.
"AAUGH!" Sally groaned.
"What's the matter, Sally?" asked Charlie Brown.
"I'm on detention!" said Sally angrily. "Got into a physical fight today!"
"But why?" asked Charlie Brown.
"Because of this… girl!" grumbled Sally. "She said her name was Sally! That's my name!"
Charlie Brown thought and thought.
"I think I know who you mean." Charlie Brown said.
"If you'll excuse me, Big Brother, I have a hundred notes to write." Sally said as she stomped to her room.
But Lydia was also in trouble with the principal.
"Are you alright, Lydia?" asked Morris, Lydia's father.
"Sally started a fight with me." said Lydia.
"But why?" asked Morris.
"I said my name was Sally, which aggravated her." Lydia explained.
"You shouldn't have done that." said Laura, Lydia's mother. "It's not nice to change your name to someone else's. It could aggravate them."
"Huh." said Lydia. "I never thought of that."
So Lydia went to her room to write her note a hundred times.
The next day, Lydia and Sally went tothe Principal's office to show the notes they had written.
"I'm sorry for lashing out at you." said Sally.
"And I'm sorry for saying my name is Sally." said Lydia.
"So what's your name today?" asked Sally.
"Today, I'm…"
Lydia tried to think.
"I'll decide on a name later." said Lydia. "Let's just go to class and worry about this later."
"Alright." said Sally.
Over at Sparkyville Middle School, Charlie Brown told his homeroom all about what had happened at Birchwood.
"So this girl changed her name to Sally, and Sally started a brawl with her." said Charlie Brown.
"Hold on!" said Linus. "I think I know who this girl is. Lydia!"
"Lydia?" quizzed Lucy. "The same girl you tried to bother with?"
"She just….. fascinated me." Linus said. "But other girls fascinate me more, but no girl is more fascinating than Janice.
Janice overheard this and blushed.
"I swear, if she changes her name to mine," Lucy said. "I know just what to do with her!"
"And if she changes her name to Violet," Violet said angrily.
"You know there's another Violet at our school." said Charlie Brown.
"Oh yeah. Violette." Violet remembered.
"And if she changes her name to Patty!" Patty Swanson added.
"You seem to be forgetting about me, Patty." Peppermint Patty chimed in.
"Oh. You're right." Patty Swanson said.
Sally and Lydia were writing on their pieces of paper, and Lydia looked on.
"So, anything you want to say to me?" asked Lydia.
"I guess I was wrong to lash out at you." said Sally. "Little did I realise there are other Sallys out there."
Miss Cooper stood for attention.
"Your attention please!" called Miss Cooper. "I would very much like you all to meet our brand new student."
The student walked in, this very student had red hair in curls similar to Frieda's, a pointed nose, and was wearing a green sweater, violet jeans, and the same shoes as Sally, except they were blue with a white stripe. Harold Angel looked towards her.
"Wow!" Harold Angel cried. "She's pretty!"
"She's not that pretty!" scoffed Sally.
"Hello." said the girl. "My name is Melody-Melody."
Melody-Melody sat at the desk right behind Lydia's.
"Hello." said Melody-Melody. "And who might you be?"
"Well," said Lydia. "Usually I'm called Lydia, but today, I'm Mimi."
Mimi overheard what Lydia had said and was shocked.
"But….. that's my name!" Mimi thought.
During recess, Melody-Melody came up to Lydia, who was sitting alone.
"Hello…. Mimi." said Melody-Melody. "Come and play football with me!"
"I don't know." said Lydia. "When were you born?"
"I….." said Melody-Melody. "was born in January."
"I was born in December." said Lydia. "Say, you looked to be the sporty type. Let's play."
"Okay. Let's." said Melody-Melody.
With that, Melody-Melody punted the football to Lydia. Lydia tried to catch the ball, but it flew too high and too far.
"I think you need to work on your catching!" called Melody-Melody.
Sally came home that day, and told Charlie Brown all about what had happened that day.
"Did you get in another fight?" asked Charlie Brown.
"Not today." said Sally. "We got a new student in our class. Her name is Melody-Melody."
"Melody-Melody?" quizzed Charlie Brown. "Now where have I heard that before?"
Charlie Brown thought and thought. And then….
"Oh no!"
Charlie Brown started to feel that pain in his back, remembering when Melody-Melody had betrayed him and Linus at the kickoff.
"You alright, Big Brother?" asked Sally.
"She… she was the one who betrayed both me and Linus!" cried Charlie Brown.
"I guess I'll have to feed Snoopy today." sighed Sally.
So Sally got Snoopy's dog food ready, and brought it outside for Snoopy to eat.
"Snoopy!" called Sally.
Snoopy overheard Sally and got off his doghouse to eat.
"Good dog, Snoopy." said Sally.
Over at Sparkyville Middle School, Charlie Brown had told everyone all about Melody-Melody moving into Sparkyville.
"Oh no!" groaned Linus. "The one who…. betrayed me!"
"It's okay, Linus." said Janice. "At least you have me now."
"Sally says that Lydia was playing with her." said Charlie Brown.
"At least she didn't change her name to mine, now did she?" smirked Lucy.
"Hope not." said Charlie Brown.
Lydia had reached her class, and sat right behind Sally.
"Oh. Hey…. Mimi." said Sally.
"Mimi was my name yesterday." said Lydia. "Today, my name is Lucy."
"Lucy is the name of the sister of my former sweet babboo." said Sally.
"Former sweet….?" Harold Angel was about to quiz Sally. "Oh yeah. You're talking about Linus."
"The man who always complimented me?" asked Lydia. "Puh-lease! He's too old for me!"
"He's older than me too," said Sally. "But I don't mind older men."
"And Sally's younger than me too." said Harold Angel.
"Good grief!" groaned Lydia. "How am I getting into this mess?"
"Children, please!" called Miss Cooper.
"Oh. Sorry, Miss!" said Lydia.
Back at Sparkyville Middle School, during her gym class, Lucy shuddered.
"Something wrong, Lucy?" asked Sebastian.
"I got the creepy feeling down my spine!" Lucy groaned.
"I'm sure it was nothing." said Sebastian. "Now let's listen to Mr. Legstrong."
Lydia was sitting with Melody-Melody during lunch break when Rerun and Katie walked by.
"What's your name today?" asked Melody-Melody.
"Today, I'm Lucy." Lydia answered.
"Lucy?!" quizzed Rerun.
Rerun walked over to where Melody-Melody and Lydia were sitting.
"I'll be at the sandbox." said Katie.
Rerun arrived at the bench.
"Say that again! You said something about Lucy!" said Rerun.
"Today, my name is Lucy." said Lydia.
"Lucy is the name of my big sister." said Rerun.
"Excuse me?" said Lydia. "But….. aren't you kind of old for me?"
"You mean to tell me you know this kid?" asked Melody-Melody.
"No. I'm younger than you." said Rerun.
"This kid is the one who tried to marry me." said Lydia.
"This kid is the one I gloated to at the kickoff!" added Melody-Melody. "Linus, is it?"
"Nope." said Rerun. "I'm actually Rerun.
"But…. you look like Linus." said Melody-Melody.
"Of course I look like Linus!" said Rerun. "I'm his little brother."
"You're his little brother?" said Lydia.
"That explains everything." shrugged Melody-Melody.
That afternoon, Rerun spoke with his siblings all about what had happened.
"You mean they mistook you for me?" asked Linus.
"Yes." said Rerun. "And Lucy."
"Yes?" asked Lucy.
"Lydia changed her name to yours!" Rerun exclaimed.
"She would, would she?" Lucy said angrily. "Leave her to me! When I next see….. whatever her name is supposed to be, I'm sending her to a place she deserves to go!"
"Where's that?" asked Linus.
"You'll see, Little Brother. You'll see." smirked Lucy.
The next day after school, Lucy stood outside the Schaffel household, waiting for Lydia to arrive. At last, Lydia had come.
"Hello." smirked Lucy.
"Do I know you?" asked Lydia.
"Do you know Linus?" asked Lucy.
"Why of course." said Lydia. "The kid who's old for me."
"Well I'm even older." said Lucy. "I know, because I'm his big sister."
"Today, I'm Heather." Lydia answered.
"Right!" Lucy decided. "I'm taking you to a place you deserve to go!" Lucy said, pulling on Lydia's hand.
Meanwhile, Heather Wold sat at her desk with Mary Stewart, doing the remainders of their homework, shuddering, when her little brother Henry came in.
"You alright, Big Sistaw?" asked Henry.
"Something went down my spine." Heather said.
"Oh dear." Mary Stewart said with worry.
"Where are you taking me?" asked Lydia.
"The one and only… psychiatrist in town!" Lucy announced.
"Oh good grief!" sighed Lydia.
"I thought, since you like to change your name all the time, I'd take you to a real psychiatrist." said Lucy. "I went to one, and it changed my life forever."
"I guess I'll give it a try." sighed Lydia.
Lydia walked into the psychiatrist's room, signed in, and waited her turn.
"If it'll make me appreciate the greater things in life." Lydia said. "Whatever I deserved to make me come here."
Lucy came home where Linus was waiting.
"Where did you go, Lucy?" asked Linus.
"You know that Lydia gal?" asked Lucy. "I sent her to a real psychiatrist!"
"You didn't!" cried Linus.
"I did. Just you wait and see."
Linus didn't know what to make of this. Will he finally find out why Lydia changes her name all the time? Will he find out why Lydia always said Linus was too old for him?
"I hope I can trust Lucy on her word." Linus said to himself.
So Linus went over to the psychiatrist to see if Lydia would change her ways.
By this point in time, Doctor White, the psychiatrist, called on Lydia.
"So, Miss Lydia Schaffel." said Doctor White. "What are you in for?"
"Oh, no reason." said Lydia.
"But you must be in here for a reason." said Doctor White.
"You got me, Doc." said Lydia. "Lucy sent me here."
"Lucy van Pelt?" asked Doctor White.
"She sent me here to see what my problems are." said Lydia.
"And what are they? Think about it." said Doctor White.
"Well… said Lydia. "I have this terrible habit of changing my name every day."
"Changing your name?" asked Doctor White.
"There are all sorts of names that I like better than my real one." said Lydia. "Some days, I'm Jezebel, sometimes I'm Rachel, sometimes I'm Chelsea, sometimes I'm Mimi, or Melody, or Laura which is my mom's name, or Patty, or Tracy, and on other days, I'm just plain old Lydia."
"And how come that is?" asked Doctor White.
"Ever since I was a little girl," continued Lydia. "my aunt Lydia got mad, and said I shouldn't be named Lydia. So that's why I always change my name."
"Oh. So it was your aunt." said Doctor White.
"I'll tell my folks about it." said Lydia.
"Any other reason you're here?" asked Doctor White.
"I have a habit of saying that boys who are older than me are too old for me." said Lydia. "You see, whenever Linus would approach me, I'd often tell him he's too old for me."
"Really?" said Doctor White. "But why would you say that?"
"It was also because of my aunt Lydia." said Lydia. "She had a boyfriend in her youth, and didn't like the fact he was older than her, and she told me not to date boys who are older than me. That is why I would always tell boys who are older than me that they're too old for me, and why I say I like younger men."
Doctor White got everything down.
"Any other problem you're facing?" asked Doctor White.
"Those are my only problems." said Lydia. "So Doctor, what should I do about it?"
"I suggest you tell your parents all about your aunt. Which aunt is this?"
"She's my father's sister." said Lydia.
"I suggest you explain it was your aunt's doing." said Doctor White. "Anyway, Lydia. Your session is over."
"Thank you, Doctor." said Lydia.
Lydia walked out of the psychiatrist's room, feeling more confident.
Linus was pacing the psychiatrist's building when Lydia walked out.
"Linus!" cried Lydia as she came out to hug him.
"Whoa! What are you doing?" asked Linus. "Didn't you always say I'm too old for you?"
"It wasn't my fault to begin with." said Lydia. "It was my aunt's."
"Of course!" said Linus. "Your aunt must've messed you up!"
"That's right." said Lydia.
"I'm glad you've changed, Lucy, Jezebel…. whatever your name is." said Linus.
"Just….. call me Lydia."
"Okay…. Lydia." said Linus as Lydia left.
Lydia arrived home and told her folks about why she was so late to get home.
"I was taken to the psychiatrist." said Lydia. "I realised why I was so cold to older boys."
And Lydia explained all the details.
"That blasted sister of mine!" grumbled Morris. "I'll give her what for when she next visits!"
"Please do." said Lydia.
Then Lydia whispered into her dad's ear.
"That's a great idea!" said Morris.
And Morris went to the phone to telephone his sister Lydia.
The next day, Linus told everyone all about why Lydia was the way she was.
"Of course!" said Heather.
"It was because of her aunt!" said Linus.
"It only makes sense!" said Janice.
"A family member would only screw up their own nephew or niece with their own beliefs." said Marcie. "Isn't that right, Sir?"
"Yeah." sighed Peppermint Patty.
"I hope she's learned her lesson." said Lucy. "After I learned mine."
"Anyway, that's that problem settled," said Charlie Brown. "let's wait until it's time to go to class."
That weekend, Lydia sat on the bench in the park, feeling more confident. As she sat, Charlie Brown and his friends came up.
"So all this time, it was all because of your aunt, right?" asked Charlie Brown.
"Yes." said Lydia. "She was the one who made me not like older boys."
"I like Charlie Brown, and he's older than me." smiled Heather.
And Heather cuddled up to Charlie Brown, causing him to blush.
"Tommy is older than me too," giggled Frieda. "But that's alright."
"I like younger women anyway." said Tommy.
"The one I really want to thank is Lucy." said Lydia.
Lucy walked up to Lydia.
"Hey, Lucy!" teased Lucy.
"Just call me Lydia." smiled Lydia. "I just want to thank you for helping me out."
"Anytime." said Lucy.
"And Linus." said Lydia. "You can have Janice. She may be younger than you, but that's okay."
"Thanks, Lydia." said Linus.
And so the middle schoolers left Lydia on her own, pleased she'd changed her ways.
In their absence, Lydia got another guest arriving at her bench. It was Eugene.
"Hello…. whatever your name is." said Eugene.
"Today, and for the rest of my life, I am Lydia."
"Lydia." said Eugene. "I like that name."
"Thanks." said Lydia. "Have a seat."
"Hold on!" cried Eugene. "Didn't you say I was too old for you?"
"I did." said Lydia. "But now, I'm fine with older men."
"Don't mind if I do." said Eugene as he took a seat.
Eugene stared at Lydia, admiring her black hair.
"So….. what brings you out in this lovely park?" asked Eugene.
"My father invited my aunt Lydia over." said Lydia. "By the sounds of it, things won't get pretty in the end. She was the one who made me not like older men."
"Of course!" cried Eugene. "Well, my own family is pretty dysfunctional in a different way."
"You know, Eugene." said Lydia. "I'd like to meet your family."
"You'll like my little sister." said Eugene. "But you sure will hate my big sister."
And as the sun was going down, Eugene and Lydia sat down on the grass, looking at the lake in the park.
"Isn't it beautiful?" asked Eugene.
"It's lovely, alright." said Lydia.
"But not as lovely as you." smiled Eugene.
Lydia, due to her therapy, started to blush.
"A….are you alright, Lydia?" asked Eugene.
"I….. I am." smiled Lydia. "My…. my….. Sweet Babboo."
"Sweet babboo?" quizzed Eugene.
"Um….. yes!" said Lydia. "Um…. I…. have to go home now. Wanna meet up later on? Like an ice cream treat?"
"Count me in!" cried Eugene.
"Then it's settled." smiled Lydia.
Then, Lydia kissed Eugene's left cheek, and left for home. Eugene felt the kiss, and fell right to the ground, blushing bright red. Lydia now accepted him.
When Lydia got home, there were Morris and Laura.
"So, how did things go?" asked Lydia.
"Glad you were gone all day." said Morris. "I dealt with your aunt and….."
"And what?" asked Lydia.
"We called the police, told them the seedy details, and now, your aunt Lydia is behind bars." said Laura.
"And now," continued Morris. "We've disowned her."
"That's wonderful!" smiled Lydia.
Then Lydia sighed dreamily, happy that she's now got a boy in her life, an older boy that is.
"Oh, that Eugene!" Lydia sighed to herself.
