Chapter 9: Where's My Mummy:

Mr. King's POV:

"I'm going to ask you again, Mr. King, who would want to steal a mummy?"

"Who knows," I asked, "a competitor! Somebody who wants to ruin me."

"You have enemies, Mr. King?"

"Of course I got enemies," I said, "I'm in show business. Any one of my friends is an enemy. He threatened me, for one, tonight."

"Is that correct, Sir?"

"Threaten him, Inspector? No. I merely warned him of what might happen."

"That the mummy would be stolen?"

"That is the last thing I would have wanted."

"It made his day for him, too," I said.

"Now, why would that be, Sir?"

"Because he wants it safely tucked away in some stuffy museum," I said.

"And if that's where it had been," says Sir Giles, "none of this would have happened. Do you mind if I leave now Inspector? Before these colorful American breaches, the English laws of slander."

"Yes, that's all right, Sir," says the Inspector, "I think we can all leave now. You'll be hearing from us tomorrow, Sir."

"Is that all you're gonna do," I asked, "what about the mummy? She could be out of the country by tomorrow."

"I wouldn't worry too much, Sir. She'd never get past the customs. Good night, Sir, Miss..."

"Now, just wait a minute! Look!" He left. "Well, if that's an English policeman, I should've asked him what time it was. I'd have gotten more out of him."

"Dahn't you sink you should go hahme ahnd ahnd get sahme rest, Mr. Keeng?"

"Rest," I asked, "how can I rest? I've got a show with no star!"

"If there's anything I can do, Mr. King..." Adam begun.

"Yes," I said, "if you want to wrap yourself up in some dirty bandages!"

They then started walking. "Good night, Mr. King," says Adam.

"Good night," I said. Everyone else left and I took a good look at the coffin. Guo then entered. "Guo, I'm on stage. What are you doing here?"

"It's true," says Guo.

"I wanted publicity," I said, "and I sure got it."

"Shouldn't you be in bed," asks Guo, "I think I know why it happened."

"What," I asked.

"I found out the meaning of the sacred words of life," says Guo, "but they were stolen from me last night."

"What's that got to do with it," I asked.

"I believe someone may have stolen the mummy in order to bring it back to life," I said.

"Must have been some wallop on the head," I said.

"You don't believe me, do you," asks Guo.

"Oh, you're real sick, boy," I said, "I'm going to call you a cab."

"I know," I said, "I never believed in such things before myself, but what if it's true?"

"Fred, get Mr. O'Connell a cab," I said.

"If someone really wanted revenge," I said, "what better instrument to use than to bring the mummy back to life?"

"Sure," I said, "sure, come on."

"What better way to cover the notice than to blame the legend," asks Guo.

"Sleep on it, Kid," I said, "I'll see you in the morning."

"You don't want to listen to me, do you, Mr. King," I asked.

"No, I don't," I said, "I've got other troubles. Take him home, Cabbie!"

"Right away, Sir!"

"'Scuse me, Guvner, did the gentleman say that the mummy's come back to life?"

"He said it was possible," I said, "you don't believe that do you?"

"Yes, I do. Some Egyptian gentlemen are always up to some very funny tricks."

"A mummy brought back to life," I asked, "say, that would really be something."

"Can I get you a cab, Guv?"

"No," I said, "I think I'll walk tonight. Your evening air is so healthy." I then gave them a tip and walked off.

. . .

I was then going out at night. I gave a woman a tip, but then, in the fog, I saw her! It was the mummy herself... or at least someone dressed like her. "I don't know who the heck you are," I said, "but don't joke about it." She then picked me up and threw me down the stairs...

Ja-Kal's POV:

We were checking on the man. "I thought she was a good soul," says Armon.

"She was," says Rath, "but don't forget, she is not like us. She is more like... how the movies depict mummies. She's nothing more than a bandaged zombie."

"Then we have to stop her before she hurts more people," says Nefer-Tina.

"Then let's get to work," I said.
