"Go Max!"
Max smiled a little.
They were at the small skate park near the park in Hawkins.
Nobody was around, since not a lot of people knew how to skate in Hawkins.
It was sunny spring Saturday, and the Party had been bored.
Mike didn't have a campaign planned so the Party ended up in the Wheeler's basement, trying to brainstorm ideas.
Max had been playing with her skateboard wheels, rolling them back and forth on her palm.
Dustin saw this and had an idea.
"Have you ever gone to a skate park?" he asked Max.
Max looked up.
"In California? Yeah, my dad and I went all the time." she responded, not sure where Dustin was going with this.
Dustin looked to the group.
"I think I know what we are doing today." he told them.
That's how they ended up at the tiny skate park.
It really wasn't much, just a couple ramps and bars.
But it was perfect for Max, who even tough had been skating around Hawkins for 6 months, hadn't been able to skate like she used to.
She had done tricks up and down the ramps, twisting and turning in the air, for 20 minutes.
Now she was doing simpler tricks.
Ones where she was on level ground, kicking and flipping the board with her feet.
She was trying to do one where she made her board flip up in the air two times, then landing on it.
Everyone was watching her, even El, who had stopped giving her dead glares ever since the Snowball and started tolerating her. They weren't friends though.
Max planted her feet, preparing herself.
'Let's do this MadMax.' she thought.
She started it, expecting to be standing on her board, looking at her awe-struck friends.
Instead, she was looking up at the sky.
And her head hurt.
"Max!"
The Party ran over her.
Lucas kneeled down, helping Max sit up.
"Are you okay?" Will asked above them.
"My head hurts." she mumbled.
Mike crouched down, looking at her eyes. They didn't have the best friendship, but they were slowly beginning to get used to have the other around.
"I think you might have a concussion."
"I'm fine." Max murmured, eyes darting one way to another.
"I don't think you are." Lucas said.
Max didn't respond, which worried her friends even more.
"We need to take her to someone." Will said.
"What about your mom?" Lucas asked, looking at Dustin.
"No, my mom's out of town, remember?" Dustin responded. "I'm staying with-"
Dustin cut off, all boys having the same idea.
In unison, they all yelled, "Steve!"
Steve's car screeched up to the park.
Dustin had run over to their bag where they had packed food, drinks, and most importantly a radio.
He grabbed the radio and tossed a water clumsily at Mike, who somehow in some miracle, caught it.
The rest of them helped Max over to a shady spot underneath a tree.
They made Max drink some water, tell them their names and what date it was, and stay awake.
Dustin had been able to radio Steve, with the latter saying he'd be there in 10.
He was there in 5.
When he pulled up, he saw five kids huddled around one.
El ran up to him when he got there, explaining the situation in a quiet voice.
Steve stopped at the tree, crouching down to be eye level with Max.
"Hi, Steve." she mumbled.
"I think she has a grade 2 concussion." Dustin said, having had time to study Max.
Everyone stared at him.
"What?" he said defensively. "My mom's a nurse, I've picked up a few things."
Steve slightly chuckled.
"Alright, how about we go to my house?"
"But, how?" Will spoke up. "We have our bikes with us."
"You can leave them here, right?" Steve asked, fully knowing that even though he could fit 6 pre-teens in his car, he couldn't fit their bikes.
"No!" they all yelled at once.
"Okay, okay," Steve said, putting his hands up in surrender. "How about I take Max, and you can bike to my house."
All the boys looked hesitant.
"I can do it."
Everyone turned.
"I can make the bikes move on their own," El stated. "I can steer them to your house."
She then looked at Mike.
"I need to ride on a bike though."
"I'll take you," Mike said, turning to the others. "Meet you there?"
They spilt into their groups, with El and Mike climbing on his Mike and the rest grabbing the bag and Max's skateboard before climbing into Steve's car.
Steve's group obviously made it to his house first, with Steve carrying Max inside and the 3 boys scrambling after them.
"Ok, Dustin what do we do?" Steve asked, setting Max on the couch.
Dustin crouched down to look right into Max's eyes, asking her a few questions.
"She just needs some rest."
They all started to make Max comfortable, Will going outside to warn Mike and El to be quiet when entering the house.
The Party went into the kitchen, letting Max rest.
When Max woke up, she still had a slight headache, but she felt better.
They all started watching Ghostbusters, and soon all fell asleep besides Steve and Max.
"Hey," Max started, turning to Steve. "Thanks for helping."
"No problem, kid." he responded. "Though you will be wearing a helmet from now on.
Max gasped dramatically.
"No, I will not!"
But, 2 days later, she was wearing a helmet while skating down the road.
Then again, that was the only time anyone saw Max wear the helmet.
