Angela thought she would never see her again.
She'd heard they were moving back to Indiana, never to be seen again.
So why was Jane Hopper standing next to her locker?
Jessica, one of Angela's friends, was about to find out.
Before Angela could stop her, Jessica was marching over to the girl.
"Jane!" she called in a fake cheery voice.
Jane turned, getting a shy, fearful look in her features.
"Hi." she greeted quietly.
"How have you been? We heard you were moving!" Jessica exclaimed.
"I've been good. Yeah, we're moving back, we're just here to get our stuff." Jane explained.
"Oh, well I hope you have a safe trip back!" And with that, Jessica turned and skipped back to Angela.
When she got there, Jessica told Angela everything Jane had told her.
Angela was only half listening, looking at Jane with a far off look.
Jane was approached by her twin, Will, and the two left the hallway.
That snapped Angela out of her daze, turning her attention towards Jessica.
"Is she going to be back for the whole day?" she asked frantically.
"Uh, not for the whole day, but I think she'll be here for a couple more hours." Jessica replied.
Angela grabbed Jessica's shoulders. "Don't talk to her anymore."
Jessica squinted. "Huh?"
"Jane will attack you. She will-"
"Did this happen during spring break?" Jessica asked.
Angela nodded.
Jessica sighed. "Angela, Brenna and I already told you, it must have been your imagination or something. Little old Jane Hopper could never do that."
"No, you don't get it. You weren't there. She, she- Stacy!" Angela signaled for her best friend to come over to the two.
Stacy came over, the three of them being the last ones in the hall.
At least it was study hall they were missing.
"Don't you remember what Jane did to us during spring break?" Angela asked.
Stacy paused, "Uh, not really. She knocked me and Jake out remember? Must have hooked wires to us or something."
"No! She made me float! And, and-"
"Angela?"
Angela turned and saw her boyfriend, Jake coming down the hall with Chad.
"Jake, remember what I told you about Jane?"
Jake nodded slowly. "Yeah, I remember what you told me, but I was passed out, I don't remember it happening. Why?"
"Jane's back." Jessica told him. "For the day at least."
Angela wanted to punch something. They weren't getting it.
"You need to stay away from her." she grounded out.
Chad laughed. "You mean the freak? What is she going to do? Stick out her hand and scream?"
Angela nodded furiously.
"Angela, you aren't really scared of her, are you? I mean it's Jane Hopper. Nothing really to be afraid of." Jake told her.
"But what about the skating rink? Ask anyone who was there, she was crazy!" Angela argued.
"Yeah, they saw her knock me and Jake out. But making you float? Nobody saw that." Stacy responded.
Angela huffed, deciding to take a new route. "Well, she knocked them out didn't she? That's a reason to stay away from her!"
The group was silent for a moment.
"Angela," Jessica stated slowly. "She did that with wires or something. There's no way that she can do that at school."
"She didn't do it with wires!" Angela shrieked. "She was able to do it with her mind. She can do it anywhere!"
Again, silence.
"Maybe we should start calling you the freak with the way you are talking." Chad joked.
Angela stood in shock as the others all laughed and agreed. They turned and walked down the hall, chatting like it was any other day.
But it wasn't for Angela.
That was the day she went from the most popular girl in school, to the school's biggest freak.
That's the power of fear for you.
