NAME: Advanced Research Group United Support (ARGUS)

For this story, I took most of my organization from the Arrowverse. However, I found that the organization was very flawed. For example, a secret organization doing a secret covert infiltration on Lian Yu (decides that a daytime parachute infiltration is the BEST option. Seriously! IT'S AN ISLAND. Use a damn boat).

ORIGIN:

ARGUS was originally formed by US Government officials to advise on specific threats to the US like the League of Assassins, HIVE, and the Church of Blood. However, under Director Waller, their mandate was expanded from an advisory capacity to an intelligence gathering organization. Waller also expanded the list of existing threats to include any known threat to US interests. Some opportunistic people took this to mean economic as well as a physical threat. They also took the term 'threat' very liberally. (For example: Grumpy Cat is a threat because he gave me a mean look.)

MOTIVATION:

ARGUS was 'generally' motivated to ensure the safety of US citizens. However, they do not feel obligated to worry about a specific US citizen inside or outside the US. Under Director Waller, that motivation became even vaguer. It became more about protecting ARGUS interests as defined by Waller than US interests. Most ARGUS agents became more concerned with their own safety above the completion of their target mission.

NOTES:

I found that the ARGUS displayed in the Arrowverse was a perfect example of a US Government organization give no oversight. They were given little to no oversight and way too much power to do what they 'thought' was right to protect 'American' interests. Too often those interests are not the US or American, but one selfish man's interests. Because of the 'classified' nature of their work, not even the elected officials were supposed to know what happened in the organization. Hell, the CIA had more oversight.
